It would appear that the rise of the nude lip is here once again.

For the first time in three years, nude and natural coloured lipsticks are outselling red shaded lipsticks.

Debenhams have reported a 62% rise in the sales of natural, softer shades of recent.

But is there a bigger picture to this story than simply a beauty trend?

Studies show that during a recession, shades of red lipstick sell far more than nude, and the opposite applies when there is a more favourable economic climate.

This “lipstick index” (named in 2001) was first realised during the Depression of the 1930s and seems to have been proved a stable point since then!

Many celebrities chose nude shades for this year’s award season such as Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock.

Hmm, it looks as if Shakira’s husband, Gerard Piqué, is a little insecure about her raunchy music videos!

Talking to Billboard, Shakira explained that she is no longer able to create music videos with men.

Known for her risqué videos and dancing it seems as if that may all be a thing of the past for the singer, unless of course another woman is involved.

Here is what she said about her husband’s stance on music videos:

“He’s very territorial, and since he no longer lets me do them with men, well, I have to do them with women … it’s more than implied in our relationship that I can’t do videos like I used to. It’s out of the question – which I like by the way, I like that he protects his turf and values me, in a way that the only person that the would ever let graze my thigh would be Rihanna.”

If Gerard is upset by his wife dancing with male dancers in a music video then he is lucky she isn’t an actress who may have to star in a steamy sex scene!

Ellie Goulding seems to be everywhere lately but it is her effortlessly, gorgeous tousled tresses that have grabbed our attention.

It is the perfect hairstyle to go for if you are opting for a semi-casual look or don’t have a lot of time to do your hair.

Here is how to achieve the look in minutes.

  • Apply a texturising mousse to your hair while it is damp.
  • Blow-dry your tressies roughly and backcomb it to create volume. Don’t overdo the backcombing as it will just make your hair look frizzy.
  • Once dry, create a deep side part and pull your hair to one side. Spritz a little heat protection on it.
  • Wrap sections of your hair around a styling wand. Start from your roots and work your way down.
  • Brush through your hair with a wide toothed comb. Smooth the top down on your head.
  • To keep it in place, spray a little hairspray all over your head.

Ta-da – an easy look that anyone can do at home.

“We finally arrive at the red carpet and as we exit the car, my date eats shit and uses my freshly done Lauren Conrad up do to break her fall. The crowd goes wild. There are flashbulbs and people circling yet no one asks if I need any help because unless you are famous at the Oscars, you are completely invisible…”

Laura Simpson has been Jennifer Lawrence’s best friend for years and was lucky enough to be her date to the Oscars.

She wrote a personal account of the event and the story includes sniffing Brad Pitt, encountering Jessica Biel in the bathroom and a dalliance with Bill Murray.

She’s hilarious and we can see why she’s Jen’s BFF. Read her full account here.

The best thing you can do for your friend after their break-up is say “Tell me if there’s anything I can do to make you feel better” and genuinely mean it. Let them know you’re there for a midnight phonecall and that you’ll have a bottle of wine on stand-by if they just want to hang out.

Avoid doing these things:

  • Comparing it to our own experiences. No two situations are the same and she doesn’t want to hear about how amazingly you handled it when she feels like crap.
  • Ask them sensitive questions. Tell them they can talk about it whenever they want, but don’t actually pry. Asking intimate questions about the relationship, the break-up and how they’re feeling just forces your friend to confront upsetting situations.
  • Not actually listening. If they say they don’t want to talk about, respect that. You may want to get the details, but this isn’t about you. They’ll talk when they’re ready.

Just let them know that they have someone there when they need it and you’ll be doing the best thing you possibly could.

Eager to move on from the end of her marriage to Orlando Bloom, Miranda is now making headlines with her career.

The 30-year-old made a name for herself on the Victoria’s Secret runway but left the lingerie company last year. Speaking about the decision, Miranda said: “I have felt this coming since my son was born and, after I became a mother, I realised I needed to prioritise my time.”

Best of luck to her!

The gorgeous Katy Perry dished the details of her workout regime during a recent interview.

What’s your favourite workout and what does your typical exercise routine look like? do you work out with a trainer or take fitness classes? how do you get fit fast?
When I can, I prefer to get my exercise outside – hiking or bike riding with friends, or even Soul Cycle. When I have to go to the gym, I use a trainer. He has me start with a 5-minute run/walk, then a 10-minute warm-up, then we’ll go into 2-3 full-body exercises with weights, then 3-4 muscle group-specific exercises (shoulders, abs, legs). He has me constantly moving. After all these exercises, we’ll end with cardio.

What motivates you to workout and how do you stay confident? what do you love and hate about working out?
I need to work out to keep my stamina up for singing and dancing at my shows. I love feeling stronger and clearer-minded after a workout, but I HATE mornings.

What songs do you listen to when working out? what’s been inspiring your most recent songs?
I usually take that time to listen to the new records coming out. Lately, I’ve been listening to Drake, Lorde, Sky Ferreira and HAIM. The songs on PRISM are inspired by self-reflection.

What are your favourite post workout snacks (food and drinks)? what’s your indulgence and how do you stop junk food craving?
After a good workout, I reach for barbecue popchips when I want a salty snack. Hydrating is incredibly important, that’s why I prefer water over sugary sports drinks. My junk food cravings hit me in the form of chicken nuggets with a variety of dipping sauces. I curb my fast food attacks by having constant costume fittings

Commenting on people’s food:
Someone gets something that’s fattening, someone only eats a tiny portion of dinner or they order something that looks/smells a little disgusting and you have to give your opinion. It might be a natural reaction you don’t think about, but giving people crap about what they eat just makes them feel self-conscious and like they’re being judged and failing to measure up.

Small talk at parties:
Most of us hate small talk. It can be incredibly dull interaction as we try to avoid opinionated subjects or even inquiring about that person’s life in case we offend them. Instead of making comments about the weather or talking about yourself, find interesting subjects you both like even if they’re controversial and ask lots of questions about the other person. They’ll follow your lead and before you know it, you’ll both be having a great time!

Restaurant etiquette:
The majority of people will either treat a waiter as their slave or will be so conscious of treating someone badly, you’ll do their job for them. Don’t be rude – you’re an important customer, but they have lots of tables to look after. If they’re being helpful, be polite and respectful and use your pleases and thank-yous. Similarly, remember they can do their job better than you can, so don’t try to help them clean up – that’s nearly more offensive than you clicking your fingers at them.

Being a good guest:
Staying at people’s houses can be awkward and nearly always results in some underlying issues between friends or family. Instead of guessing what you should be doing, just ask. Would they like you to pop dishes in the dishwasher or wet towels in the laundry basket? No problem! And your stay is resentment-free.
