Every year, the good people behind the Oxford English Dictionary release an official 'Word Of The Year' – and this year's entry is stirring up quite a bit of confusion.

To give you a sense of the types of words that generally make the cut, 2013 was officially the year of the 'selfie' which is impressive considering the word was only entered into the dictionary in that same year.

'Selfie' and 'vape' (2014's entry) might make some sense, but this year's word of the year is sure to get you scratching your heads.

Without further ado, the 2015 official word of the year is…

While it may be one of our favourite emojis (after the dancing lady in red and the embarrassed monkeys obvs), we are still not quite sure how the officially titled 'laughing with tears of joy' emoji constitutes a word.

"Emojis have been around since the late 1990's, but 2015 saw their use, and the use of the word 'emoji', increase hugely," a spokesperson for the dictionary explains.

"The 'face with tears of joy' emoji was chosen because it was the most used emoji globally in 2015."

So there you have it folks! Mark this day as the day that an emoji has officially been recognised as a word.

What next? Smart phones being recognised as pets? Puh-lease.

Kate Moss, style icon and supermodel, has been going against the grain since the beginning of her career. So no one questioned that she would forgo the digital addiction of social media that captures so many of us.

But in fact, Ms Moss has an Instagram account that she's kept hidden for years.

Kate revealed in a recent interview with HELLO! Fashion Monthly that she keeps an IG account for "spying" purposes.

"I don't care about people who post what they're eating or the weather," she said. Instead, the model focuses on what's trending around the world.

"I have to," she admitted, "otherwise I wouldn't know what anyone was talking about."

However, don't expect to see her profile becoming public anytime soon, as she told the magazine that she's not the biggest fan of social media.

"I don't have a relationship with [social media] at all. I don't know how to take a good selfie. I'm not good at them." Say what, Kate Moss can't take a selfie?!

Even though Kate keeps her IG private, she's no stranger to the social app. The style star makes regular appearances in the feeds of many models, photographers and designers alike (see snaps above), giving us serious #squadgoal envy.

Celebrities tend to celebrate the same things that most of us do too (birthdays, anniversaries, baby news), but what us mere mortals DON'T celebrate is stuff like getting millions of followers on Instagram

After realising she had 50 million followers on IG, Kim posted a snap to thank all her fans:

"WAIT!!!! I KNOW I'M LATE BUT 50 MILLION INSTAGRAM FOLLOWERS!!!! SERIOUSLY YOU DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU!!" she wrote, along with the selfie of her and a half-smiling Kanye.

But the next photo she posted made us all swoon. The picture showed a very happy North at Kim's baby shower, dressed in pink stripe PJ's, with the caption: "Our troop leader."

Seriously, how cute is that kid?

Just to further prove to us all that eyebrows are having the most intense beauty moment of 2015, this Reddit user came along.

Chiry was followed by a goat for two miles and he thought it would make a great viral post. It definitely did, but probably not for the reason that he expected.

Chiry took a selfie and posted: “While on a run, this goat started following me… and kept up for 2 miles (before being picked up by its owners.)”

Normally, the internet loves a funny story that includes a goat. So much so that there is even an app now that literally just makes goat noises.

However, Reddit users could not have cared less about the goat.

Chiry’s eyebrows quickly became a sensation.

We can see why, look at those brows, they are majestic.

So, following internet traditions seeing as we really in the glory days of the meme, people started having fun in Photoshop.

The post went viral for an entirely different reason than Chiry expected.

We have to have respect for Chirv though. He has taken his internet fame with good humour and has responded to hundreds of users on Reddit.

To be fair, most people probably just want to know how he maintains the brows.

We feel as though that was probably the reason behind the goat following him around too. We just want to make sure that this never happens.

Some days we don't have time to take 27 different photos just for one perfect shot, so it's wise to have a few hacks to turn to.

Whether you're sick of looking tired and washed out or can't get the lighting right no matter where you stand, there are easy fixes for most selfie problems.

Follow these tried and tested tips, and you'll be taking selfies to beat Kylie and Taylor in no time.

1. Brows on fleek
Okay, well this is a rule for real life too, but it's exceptionally important for your selfies. Well-shaped brows can completely transform your face… and in turn your selfie game. A close-up camera in bright lighting is going to pick up on any flaws, so be sure to tweeze any stray hairs and fill in gaps with a pencil or powder.

2. Define those eyes
If you ever wonder why you look a bit tired in your selfies despite being wide awake, your eye make-up (or lack of it) could be the issue. Scant eye make-up combined with changing lighting can make you look like you're struggling to stay awake, so throw on an extra coat of mascara and brighten up your peepers with some nude-toned liner on your lower waterline.

3. Know your lighting
Brightest isn't always best – natural lighting at dawn or dusk is actually far more flattering than midday sun. If in doubt, face yourself directly into the sun rather than standing in its shadow. If you're inside, get to a window. One foolproof trick is to hold a sheet of white paper under your chin to reflect light upwards, giving you a gorge natural glow.

4. Get your pose down
Know what poses work best for you, be it the smize, the squinch or just a natural smile. But don't be afraid to branch out once in a while. That angry pout probably won't work too well in a selfie with you and your grandma… well, unless she's the one doing the pouting:

5. Choose the right background
Unless your background is something truly beautiful (mountains, beaches, wonders of the world) then keep things simple. A blank wall or some textured wallpaper is a far better backdrop than your messy bedroom. Let your smile do the talking, not your dirty laundry.

If you thought that your brand new selfie stick was something to brag about then you might have to reconsider.

We are sorry to break it to you but the simple old selfie stick contraption is no longer going to cut it because all the cool kids are taking things one step further. The trend of arty food snaps is not going anywhere. To be honest, we find that on a scroll through Instagram or Facebook these days, colourful breakfast bowls are in fierce competition with the ever-popular selfie.

So, how do you take it to the next level and make sure selfie gets all the attention it undoubtedly deserves? You ditch the boring conventional selfie stick shot, and pair it with the ultimate foodies snap.

The breakfast selfie is now something that is happening.  Worried you might not be able to pull it off without getting poached egg in your hair or coffee on your winter scarf? Then you need look no further that the selfie spoon.

Mad props to anyone who can guess what this is.

The US cereal brand Cinnamon Toast Crunch unveiled their new wonder product in a gadget that is certainly trendy but the convenience of it still remains to be seen.

The design is very straightforward, a normal selfie stick, except the end that you hold also has a spoon attached. So a simple scoop and snap method are all you need for your morning photoshoot.

The brand promises that this is “really a thing” and “people will like your photos!” Thanks guys, there is one downside though, it only comes in purple. However, it is free, minus delivery.

In case you needed more convincing that this is the way of the future then let us have you know that they have already sold out once.

Celebrity make-up free selfies are taking centre stage at the moment as more and more Hollywood stars are going bare-faced for Instagram

Whether they are completely cosmetic-free, we don't know, but we have to say, most of them do look damn good.

We look at the best of the best from some of the hottest stars; but let us just consider – are they real or fake?

Beyoncé – Real

We figure Queen Bey is definitely make-up free in this one.

Kylie Jenner – Fake

Well, apart from the fake eyelashes, plumped lips and HD brows – we think the rest of her face might be make-up free.

Miley Cyrus – Real

Miley is a wild one and clearly doesn't care if people see her with or without make-up – because from last weeks antics she clearly doesn't care if people see her with or without clothes.

Rosie Huntington-Whitely and Kate Hudson – Real

These bare-faced beauties look so good, they might as well go without make-up to all their red carpet events.

Cara Delevingne – Real

We all know Cara is probably the most low-maintenance model around so this selfie is certainly cosmetic-free. The rat is kind of creepy though.

Georgia May-Jagger – Real

Not a scratch of face paint here! But there is a really cut puppy to make up for it!

Tyra Banks – Real

Tyra shows how it's done with the ultimate #WokeUpLikeThis selfie. It's good to see she has a sense of humour about it.

Sofia Vergara – Undecided

She is very gorgeous but we can't help but think there's a little coverage here – or perhaps it's just a great IG filter

Gigi Hadid – Real

She's young and beautiful; why would she even need make-up?

Kim Kardashian – Fake

Same deal as Kylie. With her luscious lashes and plucked-to-the-core brows, we say she might she's in the middle of the #WokeUpLikeThis scale.

Drew Barrymore – Real

We don't think we've seen Drew this fresh faced in a while; and she looks a lot younger without make-up too!

Lady Gaga – Real

She is a COMPLETELY different person. We think she even looks better without all the flashy war paint that she constantly wears!

OK – so we always suspected that Katy Perry wasn't the kinda gal that you mess not.

But then, we love the Roar songstress for her ability to speak up and speak out.

And it seems that Ms Perry isn't afraid to put her critics firmly in their place either – especially when they're questioning her singing ability.

At a concert in Melbourne, staged as part of her massive, on-going Prismatic World Tour, Katy asked a fan in the audience for her phone so she could take a selfie.

Upon inspecting the device, however, the singer realised that the woman was in the middle of a WhatsApp conversation – and that the guy at the other end of the messages had stated Ms Perry "couldn't sing live at all".

Responding, the 30-year-old megastar takes a selfie, which she duly sends to her detractor along with the scathing line: "You thought I would never see this chat. You dickless monkey. You have no balls, pussy. C***."

Ouch.

Katy is also horrified to hear subsequently that the man is actually an EX boyfriend of the concert-goer.

"What are you doing?" she asks. "Do NOT text your ex."

It seems that the incident took place late last year – but has only came to light over the last few days when the lady to whom the phone belongs shared the interaction online.

Look, we're all guilty of a spot of OTT selfie indulgence.

You take a snap here, a snap there – and suddenly it dawns on you that you might be one of THOSE girls.

But no matter how horrific you are at documenting your hair, your makeup, your gym routine, your nails, or your outfits, there's no way that you'll come anywhere close to the queen of the selfies herself, Kim Kardashian.

And over the last 72 hours, Mrs West has really taken things to a whole other level (even for her): posting an incredible 24 shots of herself.

Indeed, the last image that she didn't feature in was an adorable shot of two-year-old North tucking into a pancake.

Here, SHEmazing! brings you the ultimate round-up of Kimmy Kay's always active social media presence…

She even comes in cartoon form! Kim's most recent offerings:

Well, that certainly took an unexpected turn.

Normally when we go to our favourite singer’s concert we hope we get close enough to get at least one decent picture of the star. Some people would go so far as to battle their way to the barrier in the hope of catching a sweaty towel.

The excitement of actually getting a selfie with your favourite superstar would more than likely tip anyone over the edge.

So we can only imagine how this Enrique Iglesias fan reacted after he took their camera into his own hands for a very special selfie.

One lucky fan is now the proud owner of a photograph of his package. Yup, we’re not joking. The singer took the camera and wasted no time getting the perfect ‘selfie’ for his fan.

I usually don't take #selfies, but when I do…

Another person in the crowd was able to snap a photo of all the action. It was later uploaded to Enrique’s Instagram account with the caption I usually don’t talk #selfies, but when I do…”

Well, his tour is called “Sex & Love”, so things were bound to get a little raunchy eventually, no?

Although, one Instagram user was quick to point out, "De que sirve si no se ve nada?"

Essentially there were saying: “What’s the point if you can’t see anything?” A valid point, we think.

Nothing makes me happier than to hear my fans singing along with me. #SEXANDLOVETOUR

The singer’s interesting on stage antics come not too long after his brush with the law. Last month he was reportedly set to appear in court following an incident in Florida in May.

After being pulled over and driving with a suspended licence, he attempted to swap seats with the other person in the car. The master plan didn’t fool anyone though, and he was charged with obstruction without violence.

Some of her harsher critics have claimed that her use of Botox and other fillers is at times OTT – resulting in a waxen appearance.

But when Kim Kardashian arrived in London earlier today, it was clear that she'd had quite bit of work done: €200,000 worth of work, in fact.

Yes, fans may now be rather concerned that reality TV's biggest star has once and for all gone down the plastic surgery route… but they need not fear!

For the Kim Kardashian spotted in England is, in fact, made entirely of wax.

The €200,000 Madame Tussauds statue, which was unveiled today, even takes selfies – an activity perfected and championed by Mrs West herself.

The figure also wears the same striking Balmain minidress that Kim wore for her Paris hen party two days before her wedding to rapper Kanye West (well, it's an expertly-crafted recreation, as the original is worth some €16,500).

Although, appropriately for a woman rarely seen in the same item twice, Kim will undergo a number of designer outfit changes throughout the summer: the Balmain dress will depart at the end of this month, making way for a fresh look.

And Kanye himself will shortly be arriving at Madame Tussauds in waxwork form, being placed alongside his wife of a year.

The tourist attraction – one of the most popular in the city – said today: "When we were thinking about how we should portray Kim here at Madame Tussauds London, it quickly became obvious it HAD to be taking a selfie.

"But we wanted to make it really special and create a set where guests can take a picture that will look as if they have just bumped into Kim."

The 34-year-old, who is expecting her second child, already has a wax work in Madame Tussauds New York.

Depicting her donning a hot-pink Hervé Léger dress, it was unveiled in 2010. At that launch, Kim said: "This is one of the greatest honours ever and I am so thrilled and excited.

"Now I will never have to leave NYC."

We have some excellent news for online shopaholics, and also people who just couldn’t be bothered to get up and walk to the other side of the room and rummage around in their handbag for their purse.

MasterCard is soon going to start testing their newest feature that is going to revolutionise your selfie game, and your shopping habits.

The new feature will enable you to make purchases through a facial scan. Welcome to the future.

If you’re online shopping, you’ll be prompted to snap a selfie at the checkout in order to complete the purchase. MasterCard think it’s going to be much easier than remembering your password.

We have to agree. Who can ever remember that extra pesky password that only some websites ask you for? We know, online shopping safety is an important issue but you know the frustration we’re talking about here.

CNN Money reports that the feature is initially going to be tested on a group of 500 customers. The lucky bunch.

The MasterCard will prompt you to choose a method of authorisation, if you choose the facial recognition you just need to look at the camera, and blink, once. MasterCard won’t actually receive your image, and as of yet there haven’t been any real criteria for the selfies released.

So pajama selfies could soon be a legitimate payment method? This is going to take our lazy game to a whole new level.

The credit company said “The new generation, which is into selfies … I think they’ll find it cool. They’ll embrace it.”

The new generation is now also going to be more tempted than ever to make some ridiculous online purchases if this goes to plan.

Goodbye passwords, our desire for fierce brows and good lighting just increased rapidly.
