Hands up if you are a bright red, sweaty betty when you work out in the gym! (guilty).

The good news is, exercising no longer means sweating off your makeup, or simply opting for a clear face.

Sweat Cosmetics is a brand of makeup that is specifically designed for exercising, be it in the gym or outdoors.

January sees full-to-capacity gyms, a supermarket clear-out of anything green and "superfood-y", and a surge in the hashtag  #IrishFitFam.

If, like us, you over indulged over Christmas and ate all of the cheese and chocolate in sight (even the pieces in your peripheral vision) you might be feeling like a good month at the gym will sort you out.

Or maybe your new year's resolution is just to eat a little better and move a little more.

Either way, stocking a whole new fitness wardrobe with fancy leggings and trendy mesh hoodies isn't always that easy on a January blues budget.

Black crop top €6, blue sports bra €4

Thankfully, budget high street store Penneys is swooping in to save the day, with a whole new collection of affordable and trendy athletic wear.

Getting some new workout wear can be motivation in itself to get down to the gym, and really, who needs another excuse to hit Penneys?

Speckled leggings €13, bush pink and mesh leggings €13

Leggings are a necessity for any gym wardrobe, but this speckled, high waisted pair could definitely double up as day wear when teamed with a chunky grey turtle neck and black duster coat.

And who doesn't want to wear comfy leggings all day long?

Mesh ballet hoodie €12, embroidered hoodie €12

Penneys is embracing the popularity of the barre class, with silk ballet wrap tops and hints of blush pink throughout its new athletic line, this mesh hoodie included.

Embroidery was also one of this season's biggest trends, so rocking some on your hoodie lapels is a no-brainer.

Blue runners €13, blush pink runners, €9

Runners are a necessity to take care of your foot and ankle comfort when walking the dogs or sweating it out in spin class.

At Penneys prices, you could literally pick up a pair to match every work-out outfit.

Water bottle €3, headphones €12

Accessorising your workout gear with a reusable bottle will save you from spending extra money on disposable bottles, and if one of your new year's resolutions is to become more eco-friendly, you'll be fulfilling that one too.

Headphones are a necessity to block out the world and focus on your favourite workout playlist, and this rose-gold pair is perfect for remaining on trend and on form.

The only downfall to Penneys new collection? Now we have no excuse not to hit the gym.

I’m one of those people completely caught up in the Instagram ‘fitspiration’ revolution. I follow posters of pics of coconut protein balls and juices, stare in awe at flexible yoginis doing crow poses on the beach in their Lululemons and find myself hypnotised by the effect the simple squat can have on your arse.

Pity all I’m doing is following, staring and finding myself hypnotised – I’ve yet to, ahem, actually DO anything.

So when the opportunity came up to give Proformer Pilates a go at Pilates Plus Dublin (with ambassador Rosanna Davison – eep!) I jumped at the chance. Who better to take my cues from than model and all-round health and fitness guru Rosanna?

My history with exercise is spasmodic at best, but with a definite pattern. I try different things all the time (pole dancing/aerobics in community halls with ladies of a certain vintage/boxercise) going hell for leather for a few months to lose a bit of weight. Then, when my jeans get a bit looser, I get complacent and quit.

But I’m getting older now, and trying to get back into it each time is getting harder and harder. I’ve been unfit for so long now that I need to find a consistent form of fitness I’m going to keep up. Could Proformer Pilates be what I was looking for?

So I pulled on my brand new ‘tights’ (prior to that I exercised in scuzzy trackie bottoms because I couldn’t fathom wasting money on sportswear – how times have changed) and a sports bra and vest from Penneys (because I’m easing myself in gently obvs) and bounced out the door, a little apprehensive but excited. I even slicked on some lippy, mascara and blusher, because, well, Rosanna.

As a complete newbie to Proformer Pilates, I got a bit of a fright when I arrived in the Dun Laoghaire studio – the machines had an air of the medieval torture chamber about them, something I joked about nervously. And when Rosanna was asked how hard the class was, she responded by laughing: “The first time I did it I sat in the car afterwards with my legs shaking”.

A groan of terror moved like a Mexican wave throughout the group.

Proformer Pilates is a full body workout using resistance and stretching on the Proformer machine, all while keeping the core engaged. Developed in LA (where else?) the workout is a favourite of the Victoria’s Secrets Angels, Michelle Obama and Kimmy Kay, and can burn up to 700 calories in one session.

Not the worst credentials.

It was time. Pilates Plus owner Emma Forsyth was bubbly and encouraging, and told us to get ready to use muscles we had never used before – gulp. Lying down on the machine, I was resigned to the fact I would probably make a holy show of myself, but hey, I was making a holy show of myself for work, so what harm, right?

Saying that, I had a moment of panic when I noticed there was a photographer snapping away at the class. I’m a notoriously minging exerciser, red-faced and sweaty with an unappealing expression that generally says, “Help me” or “Make it stop”. And now it was going to be captured in HD? Christ on a mountain bike.

We started with arm exercises using the straps, and just when it got to the point I couldn’t do any more, we suddenly stopped and moved to the next exercise. Bit by bit we worked out all muscle groups slowly, smoothly and with control – but don’t get me wrong, it was intense.

The 40 minute class actually passed in no time – and I put that down to the fact we moved so quickly from exercise to exercise, so I never got too sore or too bored: two things that usually characterise how I feel when working out. Props to Emma too for being so helpful and chatty throughout.

Would I do it again? Deffo. I loved the way I didn’t have to run around like a lunatic with my boobs bouncing all over the place. I actually could LIE DOWN for most of this workout – while still busting my arse.

The dream.

Yep, this could definitely be new favourite exercise.

With the Kardashians uploading every second of their gruelling workouts to Snapchat, it’s easy to be under the impression that all celebs take their gym time super seriously.

But thankfully Ellie Goulding and Ruby Rose proved that suspicion wrong over the weekend when they decided to play fitness models for their fans.

A video uploaded to the Orange Is the New Black star’s Instagram account shows the Love Me Like You Do singer trying to do a set of pull-ups in the gym.

But when the camera scrolls down, viewers quickly realise that Ellie is receiving some much needed assistance from her Aussie mate.

There’s no denying that cycling has many benefits: it gets you up off the couch, allows you to cheat traffic and is a form of work out and transportation all in one.

But unfortunately – as with everything – it is possible to have too much of a good thing.

According to one 2012 study, cycling can negatively effect a woman’s sex life because all that time in the saddle can actually desensitise the vagina.

While comparing a group of female runners to a group of female cyclists, a team of Texan scientists found that when women regularly rode 10 or more miles per week (that’s around 16km) their “vaginal and labial genital sensation” was reduced.

According to Cosmopolitan, bikes on which the handlebars were set at a lower level than the seat were found to cause the most damage and this unfortunate news applies to both real bicycles and the ones you use in the gym.

So the next time you find yourself eyeing an exercise bike, maybe consider the cross trainer instead!

Back in July Playboy model Dani Mathers hit headlines when she openly bodyshamed an unsuspecting nude gym goer on Snapchap.

And now that police have finally tracked down the victim of Dani’s mocking, it looks like the Playmate could be facing up to six months in jail.

According to TMZ, the woman featured in the controversial snap – who happens to be aged in her seventies – wants Dani to “feel the full force of the law” for photographing her while she was changing in an LA Fitness changing room.

From here on out I only work on sets that provide dogs! If you are thinking of hiring me… Keep this in mind #miloandme

Police are reportedly encouraging prosecutors to charge the former Playmate of the Year with the Dissemination of Private Images for sharing the snap which read: “If I can’t unsee this then you can’t either.”

It is said the LA native’s victim is more than willing to testify and cooperate however she can in order to ensure justice is achieved.

Dani was forced to apologise for her actions earlier this summer after receiving huge backlash online when the degrading snap went viral.

In July she wrote on Twitter: “I’m sorry for what I did…I need to take some time to myself now to reflect on why I did this horrible thing.”

The model also used Snapchat to claim she models because she loves the female body and that she understands bodyshaming is wrong.

Most of us are guilty of working out with a face full of makeup, right?

Whether it's down to a lack of time to remove it or the fact that you are a little self-conscious about your skin and you just know the gym is brimming with hotties, there are few women who can say hand-on-heart that they have never gone to the gym working a full foundation look.

We all know that we SHOULD remove makeup before getting all hot and bothered, but do you really know why?

1. It clogs your pores:

Which can lead to blackheads and dull looking skin.

2. Your skin needs to sweat AND breathe:

But when there is a barrier of makeup, creams and oil it can struggle to release perspiration and breathe.

3. When your skin cools down the pores tighten:

This in turn locks dirt and grime in.

4. It can cause redness and uneven tone:

When you are working out with makeup on the heat can become trapped under the skin which can cause flare ups like rosacea.

5. You are merely hiding a skin issue:

Most of us who wear makeup when working out either don’t have time to take it off or are self-conscious about our skin. However, covering up with makeup is merely masking the issue and in fact can make it worse.

6. You don’t need it:

Seriously! Everyone will be too busy making sure they look OK working out to be bother by whether you have makeup on or not.

When it comes to the gym, Lord knows we've made a few dud moves in our time.

Squatting when asked to lunge, sitting when asked to stand – Holla at me, fellow Spinners – and leaving when asked to stay.

"The class hasn't finished yet…"

But the moment we're free of that Godforsaken sweatbox, we generally pull ourselves together, adhere to social norms, put one foot in front of the other, and walk like a real-life human.

And while normal rules apply to us mere mortals, the same clearly can't be said for Nashville's biggest current export – Taylor Swift.

If recent footage caught by eager paps is anything to go by, poor oul Tay takes some time to adjust to the outside world after a heavy cardio session, and can't quite remember the classic left, right, left, right formula when it comes to the ol' walking.

Side to side in an approach generally favoured by crabs, Tay can be seen quickly making her way to a waiting SUV before sliding inside, and using her pincers to direct her driver.

Good woman yourself, Tay.

Washboard abs, toned arms and perfect legs… Vogue Williams might have a body to die for, but she makes no secret of the hard work she puts in to stay looking her best.

The model regularly shares photos and videos of her high-octane workouts on social media, and it's clear she's not one to slack off in the gym.

Case in point is this bum and ab workout, which Vogue shared with close to 100k followers on Instagram yesterday.

We're getting tired just looking at the short clip, showing an intense mix of pylometric box jumps, squats and burpees which Vogue blasted through with the help of her trainer, Maya Saffron.

The worst part? This was only a tiny portion of the model's workout – she promised to share the full thing on her Hello! magazine blog next week.

Wow. And it turns out we're not the only ones feeling envious/motivated by Vogue's latest workout video – her fellow model Nadia Forde was quick to comment on the post, calling Vogue her "fitspiration."

Nadia has been hitting the gym hard herself of late, after dropping over two stone in the last year through a mix of clean eating and no-holds-barred workouts.

"I go to the gym four or five days a week now," she told the Irish Independent last month.

"Boot camp taught me how much we can do in the gym if we really push ourselves. You'll never find me just going in for 20 minutes anymore and floating through.

"I'm in for an hour and sometimes I'll do a class along with my workout in the gym. I feel guilty if I don't go to the gym but that's just become a thing lately."

Fair play to these two amazing ladies.

Like all of us, Adele is feeling the guilt after some extreme over-indulgence at Christmas. And rather than post a serene and smug #cleaneats #blessed gym selfie, the singer told it exactly like it is.

The gym is hard work, people. Like, sweating and grunting and red in the face hard work. Especially if you have a trainer dictating your every move like Adele no doubt does.

That's why we're loving this snap of the Hello hitmaker feeling the burn with those godawful resistance bands as she prepped for her upcoming tour.

"Getting ready…" Adele captioned the brilliant black-and-white snap.

Given that the star's previous tweet, posted on December 21, mentioned that she was " in a dressing gown eating a Chinese watching Eastenders," we're guessing the first week back at the gym was fairly tough.

It's no doubt been all go for the mum of one since she confirmed back in November that she would be doing a European and US tour, starting with two gigs in Belfast at the end of February, before moving to Dublin and beyond.

We can't wait!

OK, so we made it to the gym, we did our warm-up, ran on the treadmill, hammered out a few weights and now it's time to go home (thank god).

Lazy girls aren't really workout girls, but it has to be done, right? And when the lazy girl has to make something to fuel themselves afterwards… it can almost be as hard as their workout (because who has the effort?!).

At this stage there are thousands of post-gym smoothies out there – and they're all very complicated.

So, while this one isn't as fancy as the rest, it will do just the trick after a hard(ish) workout:

Almond and Banana Smoothie (serves two sweaty girls)

500ml almond milk

2 frozen bananas (if using fresh banana add some ice)

2 teaspoons almond butter

2 teaspoons Greek yoghurt

A grating of nutmeg

2 teaspoons of maple syrup

And BLITZ!
