Yearly Archives: 2019

by Sarah Magliocco & Kate Brayden

Roz Purcell is leading tha charge when it comes to incorporating wellness – for the body, mind and planet – into her lifestyle.

The capability to create a life that places personal wellbeing, activity and the benefit of the environment makes the model and foodie the ideal ambassador for WellGood 2019.

WellGood – a free 21-day programme, featuring tips on nutrition, mindset, fitness and yoga designed to help the nation improve their overall health and fitness – kicked off this week, and you can sign up to join the programme here.

Ahead of the healthy living launch, we caught up with Roz to get her feedback on all the things can can impact your wellbeing in modern society:

What has drawn you towards WellFest specifically, and why is it different than any other health and fitness events?

Well, first of all, I've been to a lot of wellness events and what makes WellFest stand out is always the atmosphere and their luck with the weather. It was also the first of its kind in Ireland so it has had a huge following from the start and to see how it's grown is just fantastic.

Can you tell us more about the KBC & WellFest WellGood programme and your role in the programme?

The KBC WellGood programme is always amazing to be involved in. I get so much out of it as it's a fantastic way to get ready for the event and through my collaboration with the other ambassadors. I'm covering the food for the KBC WellGood programme so I have created easy recipes for everyone! There is something for you, whether you love a bit of meal prep, fancy a treat or love having friends around.

Your career encompasses a huge amount of variety, are there any other areas or industries which you’d like to break into?

Oh that’s a tough question!

My main passions are recipe developing and fitness but I guess one area I've never really tried, but I love, is photography. I shoot a lot of food and landscape but I would love to focus on it a bit more this year and maybe one day shoot my own cookbook!

How would you define ‘beauty’?

I understand for everyone this definition is very different but for me, my definition has definitely changed with age, I guess coming from an industry that was very much aesthetic focused you can get consumed by what you're told is beautiful in that world. But, once I grew up a bit, I realised more than ever beauty is defined by personality, confidence and warmth and it really has nothing to do with anything physical at all.

What is your advice to someone who has zero experience of fitness, diet and wellness but wants to start fresh with a healthier lifestyle?

Make small changes over periods of time, don't try to jump in all at once. Know the reason you're starting this and come back to that reason every time you think about just throwing in the towel.

How do you think wellness can aid mental health, and why do you think mental health issues in Ireland are on the rise?

Well, I'm no psychologist but speaking from my own experience it has a huge impact on me. I definitely feel better overall when I am eating well and exercising. Once again, I'm not an expert on this but my guess is that as a society we are just speaking about it more openly now. There have been some fantastic mental health ambassadors breaking the stigma to start the conversation, therefore it's not hidden like before.

How positive a light do you view social media with? Do you feel under constant pressure to keep updated with posts and blogging?

No, you can find the good and bad in anything. I choose to focus on the positive side to it. If I want to take breaks from it, I do without questioning. Everyone is far more aware that the majority of social media is a load of BS and not reality, so as long as you take it with a pinch of salt.

How did you begin your blogging career?

I started back about 7 years ago now, I think. At the start, I used my blog as a way of keeping recipes as I was finding that I had lost so many recipes without having a purpose to share them.

I also started Natural Born Feeder to share my own food and body struggles as it was during my blogging years I started to try to get help.

How would you begin a blogging career in 2019 versus when you first began?

Same way – if it's your passion that will show and grow and if you have values you'll last.

How adept at you at handling criticism and negative comments online?

I grew up modelling, I'm pretty good at taking criticism. No one likes negative comments but in this day and age, it's so easy for people to type mean things from the safety of their laptop.

I guess, depending on the comment you probably need to be able to distinguish if it's a fair comment because no one gets things right all the time, or if it's just someone being nasty for the sake of it.

What Irish social issues do you feel most connected to?

Well come on, that's a bit shitty to just pick one? I think as a woman I'm pretty good at multitasking and fighting for multiple issues. I speak more about climate change on my social channels as I discuss food waste and personal impact but that doesn't make me feel less connected to the homelessness crisis or fair healthcare.

How do you maintain an eco-friendly lifestyle, and do you think this type of lifestyle is niche or do you see a trend of food, wellness, health and beauty blogging moving towards being more environmental-focused?

It's great so many influencers are trying to seed it through.

However, it's really up to policymakers in Ireland to make it a priority and stop burying their heads in the landfill.

Last year Ireland ranked one of the worst performing countries in action on climate change in the EU, I think everyone should lobby their local TD's to make sure climate change is on their agenda.

Ah, Ash Wednesday. It was the first day of Lent, and also the first day of not letting chocolate pass your lips for 40 days.

Yes, we all hated it as kids (mainly because all the Nutella was thrown out of the house), but you also disliked it because it was the day you got black ash smudged all over your forehead.

So, if you went to a Catholic school, here are six things you'll remember about Ash Wednesday:

1. You really hated the black smudges

Especially when you got older and started wearing make-up. It was sooo not a good look.

2. But there were small benefits

If the priest came into your school on Ash Wednesday or you had to go to mass, that meant you'd be out of class for at least an hour, and hey, it beats doing school work, right?

3. There was always one

There was always one badass Catholic school girl that refused to go up to the priest and get ashes. You always wished you had her guts.

4. But, God love you if you went home without them

Your mother would kill you. And then drag you to a two hour mass just so you could get smelly black ash on your head. Not worth it.

5. Things changed when you got older

If you met up with the lads after school, the bathrooms would be FULL of girls scraping the ashes off their heads… while also applying ten layers of foundation (which wasn't a good look either).

6. And after all these years…

You're still not really sure why you have to get ashes on your forehead. (Apparently, it's because we have to "repent, and believe in the Gospel."

Instagram is pretty much where trends are born these days – and one look we've been starting to see more and more is the over-sized 80s short suit.

Yes, short suits might seem like a bit of an unexpected trophy item for the new season, but hear us out.

A short suit is actually just as versatile as a regular suit – except it's more adaptable for the current unexpected climate.

One suit in particular is proving popular – The Mom Pinstripe Suit from ASOS. At €114.75, it's not cheap, but it's a great investment piece.

The 80s boxy silhouettes are a huge lewk for 2019, and honestly this suit will be your go-to all year long to emulate that vibe.

The wide cut leg of the shorts is SUPER 80s, but also super flattering and comfortable.

We'll be wearing this like Irish fashion 'grammer Emma Roche – with a loose white t-shirt and loads of chunky gold necklaces.

The suit would also look fab with a black bandeau, black tights and boots.

Fling the blazer over and jeans-and-a-tshirt combo to elevate a casual attire, while the shorts can stand alone with a graphic t-shirt, runners and a long-line coat over top.

Cruel Intentions is one of the most iconic films of the 90s.

The plot had everything – sexual deviance, true love, death and a crucifix full of cocaine.

The film launched in 1999 – and the 20th anniversary of it's release just passed us by yesterday.

Mother’s Day is just around the corner. It is a day of love and celebration. It is a day where mums get to enjoy breakfast in bed, receive handmade cards covered in glitter and are gifted bunches of delightful blooms to show them how much they’re loved.

It is a day many of us look forward to, but we must remember that it isn’t easy for everyone. It is a day that causes major heartache and upset for people all around the world, for their own personal reasons.

Many have lost their mums, others have poor relationships with them. There are women who have spent their lives dreaming of becoming a mum only to have that dream cruelly snatched away from them.

Bloom & Wild have acknowledged just how difficult and emotional this holiday can be for people and what they’ve done for their customers is beyond admirable.

The florist offered customers the option to opt-out of receiving emails about Mother’s Day. They have sent a thoughtful email to their customers, including blogger Lottie L’Amour who shared a screenshot of their message.

A post shared by Bloom & Wild (@bloomandwild) on

The email read: ‘Want to opt-out of Mother's Day emails? No Problem. I wanted to get in touch as I know that Mother's Day can be a very sensitive time for some of us. So if you don't want us to send you any Mother's Day reminders this month, we won't. Just let us know by opting out here. Then we'll do the rest. And don't worry, if you opt out we'll still keep you up to date with everything else, like normal. Best wishes.’

Bloom & Wild have received heaps of praise for their kind gesture. They thanked everyone for the support: ‘We've been so overwhelmed by the positive response to our recent opt-out email. We just wanted to say thanks for all the kind words and we hope we can make things the tiniest bit easier for some at a tricky time.’

Fair play to Bloom & Wild for thinking of those who struggle with Mother’s Day.

Whether it's a full body bronze spray tan for a night out, or a quick splash on tanning water for a golden complexion, rarely are Irish women without a faux glow.

You can't really beat a properly applied spray tan – and today just so happens to be National Spray Tan Day (yes, it IS a thing).

Since the release of the docu-series Surviving R Kelly, which portrayed the stories of many women who claim to have been sexually abused by the singer, R Kelly has remained relatively silent.

However, in his first interview since the allegations were brought against him, he has vehemently denied any wrong doing.

'Whether they're old rumours, new rumours, future rumours, not true,' he told CBS' Gayle King.

When asked if he ever held women against their will, he replied: 'That's stupid!'

'Use your common sense. Forget the blogs, forget how you feel about me.'

'Hate me if you want to, love me if you want. But just use your common sense,' he continued.

'How stupid would it be for me, with my crazy past and what I've been through – oh right now I just think I need to be a monster, and hold girls against their will, chain them up in my basement, and don't let them eat, and don't let them out.'

The R&B singer, real name Robert Kelly, was tried and acquitted of child pornography charges in 2008.

He has always denied these charges, and made reference to them in the CBS interview: 'For one, I beat my case.'

'When you beat something you beat it. You can't double jeopardy me like that. It's not fair.'

A post shared by R Kelly (@rkelly) on

Kelly was indicted last month on 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Attorney Michael Avenatti, who is representing several women who are bringing charges against R Kelly, tweeted in response to the interview:

'R. Kelly does NOT deny sexually assaulting underage girls. In fact, his answer demonstrates his guilt.'

'He fails to understand that it doesn’t matter “how long ago” it happened. And he also has no clue as to how “double jeopardy” works.'

He continues: 'R. Kelly’s tears are out of fear and despair.'

'Because he knows that after over two decades of sexually abusing underage girls, we blew this wide open and have him and his enablers dead to rights.'

There has been no word yet on a trial for the alleged victims.

At just 21, Kylie Jenner has just been named the youngest self-made billionaire in the world.

Now, her self-made status has been debated heavily, as many argue that she would not be in the position she is today if it wasnt for her famous family.

However, her vast wealth comes from her various independent projects, but most notable her booming cosmetics behemoth Kylie Cosmetics.

Again, you could argue that her company would not have been as successful as it was had she not already been famous or had the start up capital for the business from her reality Tv endeavours, but clearly Forbes feels that self-made is a worth title.

While most recognise the huge achievements she has made with Kylie Cosmetics, many are pointing out that by hailing from the Kardashian-Jenner clan, it's difficult to associate her with being 'self-made.'

With the dictionary defining self-made as 'having become successful or rich by one's own efforts,' and it conjures up a came-from-nothing image of a person who started at the bottom and rose through the ranks through hard work and innovation.

Having come from a collective family net worth of $400 million dollars without Kylie's fortune added, and with the astronomical fame, could Kylie be considered 'self-made?'

Regardless, the 21-year-old mother-of-one is now a billionaire – the first in her family to achieve said accolade and be added to Forbes annual billionaire rich list.

Kim Kardashian is the second-richest person among the Kardashian-Jenner family.

We live our lives on Instagram these days and the slew of perfectly made-up faces can be tough to see every day – mostly because it's just so unrealistic.

While there are many beauty bloggers, influencers and MUA's generously using photoshopping and facetuning apps to re-shape and overhaul their entire appearances, it's refreshing to have those who are lifting the lid and showing us exactly how much they can edit the snaps you see.

Irish beauty influencer TooDollyMakeUp aka Jen Morris took to her Instagram Stories to get real about the FaceTuning app – and we were all ears.

She made interesting points – all of which she assured was not to upset anyone, but show how easily an image can be edited.

She said, ''I use FaceTune full disclosure FYI but never to this extent…''

Then she went on to show us exactly how she used the app – firstly, by changing the tone of her skin slightly, then by making her cheekbones appear sharper before smoothing out the skin on her cheeks.

Jen is aware that FaceTune is normalised in the influencing industry and thinks is down to the fact that it's free and easy to use.

She told SHEmazing, ''I really don't think it's going anywhere soon. I mean, look at someone like James Charles who is massively successful and is a very talented marketer and influencer openly using FT and even has tutorials on how he completely changes his facial features in the majority of his images.''

On her Stories, she continues to show us the extent in which people edit their images – she enhances the size of her lips before doing the usual Instagram stuff of altering the warmth and lighting.

Phew – that's a hell of a lot of work, isn't it?

When asked what she thinks of a small amount of FaceTune for aesthetic reasoning, she is a fan but only because a lot of her content is makeup-related.

She said, ''Sometimes the camera just does not capture colour or texture the way it looks to the naked eye so I like to use FaceTune for that reason. I use it to make details pop, to make the texture of glitter show. At the end of the day 'Do you boo boo' if you want to FaceTune  the life and soul out of your pictures do it but people are going to see you in person so just be aware!''

So why did she open up about the app on her Stories?

A post shared by J E N M O R R I S (@toodollymakeup) on

She said, ''I just wanted to show people that not everything you see online is what it seems. I feel sorry for younger girls looking at these hyper-real IG MUAs with no pores or texture to their skin sitting at home wondering why they don’t look like this no matter what they try!''

She added, ''I don’t think FT is bad, I just think people aren’t aware of it so that can be quite damaging to their self esteem similar to the effect that magazines have had in the past and to some extent still have!''

Jen's words of wisdom are ones to take away from all of this – ''Don't beat yourself up if you don't look like people on IG, half the time we don't look like ourselves either.''

And to that we say – amen.
