Yearly Archives: 2019

Summer has arrived and for many of us, it means different things.

Longer, brighter evenings, beer gardens, a chance to get on a plane and lie by a pool…

We're halfway through the year and our New Years good intentions are more than likely waning fast – we've given up on the gym tbh.

Thankfully, we have TV presenter and journalist Elaine Crowley is in the same boat as us and she knew she needed help in certain areas of her health – which is why she is the ambassador for Lloyd's Pharmacy Change Your Health Direction program.

The program aims to improve your health during the next eight weeks – from quitting smoking to helping you get on top of your exercise and nutrition.

Sign us UP.

A post shared by Elaine Crowley (@elainecrowleytv) on

Elaine can't praise the program enough, as she has been suffering from ''shocking insomnia'' and Llyod's have helped her find a cure – magnesium supplements.

She said, ''It's making a huge difference. I've tried sleeping tablets for years but this is helping – and zinc as well. I'm 41 now and I think your health priorities change a bit – it's not about what you look like, it's about the whole body creaking a little. I don't think we're getting everything out of the foods we're eating unfortunately so I'd take a few supplements every day.''

When it comes to other health niggles that she wants to nip in the bud, getting enough kip is the strong foundation she wants to build upon.

She said, ''It's well documented that I have depression, so if I don't get enough sleep everything psychically and mentally collapses. Tiny things like getting out for half an hour at lunch can make a huge difference.''

Ok, so what about us who have fallen off the bandwagon?

Elaine's advice is, ''Baby steps. Do something achievable. Like having one meal that isn't processed three times a week or only having meat once a day – tiny, tiny things.''

Sounds doable to us.

While taking care of your health on a physical level is important, we mustn't neglect taking care our minds as well as Elaine understands.

She is managing her depression but says that the fact Lloyds' door is open for a chat is a great starter if you don't quite know how to tackle your mental health.

Something that doesn't help our mental health is the pressured environment of today's world and the ''having it all'' mentality.

Elaine is having NONE of it when we mention it and makes some great points.

She revealed, ''You'll exhaust yourself if you keep chasing something that is unattainable. At one point last year all my hair was falling out from stress – you can't have it all.''

She continued, ''Be kind to yourself. Don't be looking at Instagram and television thinking, ''Oh my God their life is perfect'' – nobodies life is perfect.''

Her parting words of wisdom were, ''Having it all doesn't mean having the perfect job, house, and husband. Having it all means whatever makes you happy. Being happy in yourself is as much as anyone should expect you to have and be.''

And to that, we say hear hear.

John Mayer seems to consistently have a swirl of rumours surrounding his love life, and now there are whispers of a potential spark with none other than Kourtney Kardashian.

The singer is renowned for his long list of ex-girlfriends who include Katy Perry, Jennifer Aniston and Taylor Swift. He caught up with radio show host Andy Cohen on SiriusXM's Radio Andy, and the two discussed the latest rumours plaguing the star.

The Gravity singer had some things to clarify, namely that he has met Kourtney Kardashian but they have zero plans to date, as of yet.

Mayer and Kardashian apparently originally met back in December at a party, which sparked the romance rumours. One source from E! News claimed at the time;

"They connected, but Kourtney really didn't think twice about it. Kourtney thinks John is definitely charming but they don't have any scheduled plans to see each other as of now."

The Poosh founder, who is single after breaking up with model Younes Bendjima, "is going with the flow of her dating life." Mayer has now explained that the dating rumours "happen not to be true."

The pair crossed paths at the GQ Men of the Year bash, at which Mayer admitted he "crashed towards the end." He turned on the charm when he met Kourtney, and flirtatious banter undoubtedly ensued.

The insider who asserts to have seen them heard Mayer say to Kardashian, "It was sweet serendipity running into you." What an absolute MINX.

Mayer seemed happy enough to have the rumours floating around, but he took umbrage at the quotes being changed;

"I would never say that!" he told Cohen. "But if you're getting paid to write the story and you listen to every John Mayer song and say, 'What's the next thing he might say based on all the lyrics?' it might be 'It was sweet serendipity running into you.' But I didn't say that because that's hyper-corny."

The 41-year-old spoke the truth of their interaction, and it basically was just a chat about rock band The Scorpions…

"I ran into the bass player from The Scorpions and his name was Klaus or something. I don't think it was Klaus but it was close. I said, 'Klaus it was sweet serendipity running into you.'"

Mayer continued, "He started throwing me in a video and I was hamming it up because I love The Scorpions and then Kourtney Kardashian walks up. I said, 'Kourtney walk away. This is the bass player from The Scorpions and he's going to try to get you in his video' cause he was already like 'Hey Kourtney, come be in my video.'"

Mayer essentially just blocked a band from getting a Kardashian in their music video;

"All I did was save Kourtney Kardashian from being in a video with the bass player from The Scorpions." He referred to that as a "far better story than 'sweet serendipity.'"

The artist did call the beginnings of the romance story "diabolical and genius," which is a bit gas. There wasn't a meet-cute, but he did share his feelings on the famous family.

"Look, I actually like the Kardashians," he said. "If you break it down to your interactions with them, they're very nice people. So any objection to them is more philosophical, and I really don't have a philosophical objection to people that I don't get on with every day."

Mayer had a world of hilarious  praise for momager Kris Jenner, even calling her "the Yoda of Hollywood serotonin," but expressed his fear of her at the same time;

"I don't want to be noticed by Kris Jenner too much. I want a nice base level of respect but I don't want to be too far on her radar. She could end me." He's dead right.

Felicity Huffman has pleaded guilty to charges of mail fraud and honest services mail fraud in the nationwide US college admissions cheating scheme.

The American actress, known for her role in Desperate Housewives, allegedly paid $15,000 (€13,300) to rig her daughter's SAT score in order to get her into a better college.

The star entered her plea in a Boston federal court two months after her arrest in the Operation Varsity Blues case, where wealthy parents have been caught paying bribes to aid their children's acceptance into elite colleges.

The 56-year-old is among 14 parents who have agreed to plead guilty to the accused charges in the widely-publicised case, involving Lori Loughlin among others.

Authorities are referring to it as the biggest college admissions cheating scandal ever prosecuted in the USA. Hollywood stars and business executives have been involved in the proceedings, as well as coaches at Georgetown and Yale.

Huffman apparently paid a consultant, Rick Singer,  $15,000 to have a proctor correct her daughter's SAT answers and also considered carrying out the same plan for her younger son.

The actress was tearful in court as she faced consequences of her actions.

Parents are accused of using the admissions consultant to pay off entrance exam administrators to allow a proctor to sit tests for students or correct their mistaken answers.

Huffman has apologised for her crime and claims her daughter was unaware. "I accept full responsibility for my actions and will accept the consequences that stem from those actions," she said.

Prosecutors have stated that they will seek between four and 10 months in prison for Huffman. As she agreed to plead guilty, the recommended sentence will be at the low end of the range, and she may not actually end up in prison.

It has been pointed out that parents on the lower economic scale and especially parents-of-colour in the US have faced far longer prison times for lesser crimes.

Jameela Jamil has opened up about having an abortion when she was younger.

The Good Life actor took to social media to reveal that she underwent the procedure after falling pregnant at a young age.

The 33-year-old said that the decision was the best one she ever made as she wasn't ready for it emotionally, psychologically or financially.

Jameela Jamil

She wrote, ''I had an abortion when I was young, and it was the best decision I have ever made for me and, for the baby I didn’t want and wasn’t ready for emotionally, psychologically and financially. So many children will end up in foster homes.''

She continued, ''So many lives ruined. So very cruel.''

Jameela was speaking out against the new anti-abortion law, HB 481, in Georgia, America that will be coming into effect in 2020.

The law will ban abortion at ''any stage of pregnancy.''

Jameela called the law, ''upsetting, inhumane, and blatantly demonstrative of a hatred of women.''

She added, ''It is a disregard for our rights, bodies, mental health, and essentially a punishment for rape victims, forcing to carry the baby of their rapist. I’m so stunned that our world is not only behind, it’s moving backward. This hurts my heart in so many different ways, and in particular as a rape victim. I can’t imagine having fallen pregnant and being FORCED BY LAW to carry his baby to term, and see someone who looked like him every day, otherwise, I can get the death penalty?!''

Jameela Jamil

Her followers showered her with supportive comments, with one saying, ''I’ve been loudly screaming this since becoming pregnant myself – forcing a woman to carry a baby she does not want should be considered torture. I live in Canada. Abortion here is a non-issue. I’m angered for Georgia and the US.''

Others were not of the same mind, with one writing, ''Just say it was the best for you, I understand. Don't say that being aborted was the best for that baby. Your baby. It wasn't.''

This is the first time that the former model has spoken about her abortion but she pleaded with her followers to help in fighting the ban and she hopes that by talking about what she went through, it will help other women to feel less alone.

We set out to ask the lovely lash specialists at Elysian Brows and Beauty their pro tips to keep your lash extensions looking fluffy, full and long lasting.

Getting gorgeous lash extensions is just the first part – the rest is all about the aftercare and taking every possible step to make your eyelash extensions last a long limed time

Nailing the sleeping position

If at all possible, try to sleep on your back rather than your stomach, as this is the best way to make sure no damage is done to the extensions in your sleep.

If you can’t but sleep on your side, you should put your head on the edge of the pillow, so your lashes aren't touching the pillow or the bed itself.

Avoiding touching the pillow with your lash extensions is one of the most sure-fire ways to make sure you're not rubbing your new lashes to extinction throughout the night

Brush, Brush and keep on Brushing

Not a vicious combing, just a neat combing in order to keep them all properly aligned and looking gorgeous.

At Elysian, they will provide you with an eyelash brush that you can do your daily maintenance of your fab lashes with, if you tend to misplace these guys you can simply use an old mascara brush that's been thoroughly cleaned of all mascara reminisce.

Washing your face with eyelash extensions?

Post lash app you don't want to expose them to any water/steam or heat so avoid washing your lashes for the first 48 hours for maximum glue setting power.

After the 48 hours, the ladies in Elysian would recommend to skip oil-based cleansers or toners as they will only weaken the glue that holds the extension to the natural lash and will make them fall of faster.

Be gentle. Ensure that you are very gentle when removing makeup form the eye area. Take it slow, and don't rub too hard, and try to avoid the eyelashes themselves. Pat, don't rub. Gently pat your face dry avoiding rather than diving face first into the towel.

If you are trying to remove stubborn eye shadow build up, wet your eyelash brush and gently comb through the lashes wiping off the product from the brush at each stroke

Avoid all urges to touch

This might seem like a no-brainer, but you'd be surprised how many people don't heed this particular piece of advice: don't rub or pick at your lashes as you run the risk of damaging the extensions.

It may be hard to avoid but any unnecessary pulling or picking will have them loosen at the bond.

Elysian Brows and Beauty now have three salons on St William Street, Dawson St and Greystones that offer amazing semi-permanent mink lash extensions. For more information visit https://www.elysianbrows.ie/.

Ah, the Gaeltacht. Remember the days? Busloads of mid-teen adolescents would head down to the depths of the Wesht for three weeks (costing a bomb) to try and shove Irish into our mouths…

Most of the time we came back with less of the mother tongue than when we left, and had some interesting experiences at the céilí with some lad you've probably seen in Coppers seven years later and almost died of mortification.

The jealousy of the other kids who managed to get a bean an tí who could actually cook was too real. News has now hit us that a scheme similar to the Erasmus programme will allow up to 175 students to study in the Gaeltacht for a semester.

College students will be offered the chance to spend three months in Connemara under the new language immersion scheme announced today by the Department of the Gaeltacht.

New government funding worth €250,000 will allow students to live with families while attending third-level courses for the entire summer.

Minister of State for the Irish language, the Gaeltacht and the Islands Seán Kyne made the announcement in Ionad Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge in Carna, an off-site part of the NUI Galway campus.

Image: Flickr/janmennens

The Minister said the scheme “will be of benefit both to the Irish Language and the Gaeltacht”, and is aimed both at students with Irish as a core subject in their university, and at those who need the language to work in certain jobs and the public service.

The subsidy is worth up to €1,428 per student, and is payable to families qualified under the department’s Irish Language Learner’s Scheme.

Minister Kyne commented:

“I am delighted to have the opportunity to announce this new funding in further supporting third level students across Ireland to further enrich their Irish through spending three months living with Gaeltacht families while they are attending a qualification course in the Gaeltacht."

Image: Flickr/Will

"For many years, students learning languages have had the opportunity to spend time immersed in a target language while studying abroad on Erasmus. A fund will now be available for the first time which will help students to spend an entire semester in the Gaeltacht.”

Students studying primary school teaching often visit the Gaeltacht as part of their course, as a proficiency in Irish is required.

We've all got some hilarious teenaged memories from our time in the Gaeltacht, be the recollections good or bad, so this should be interesting…

The parents aren’t ones for picking traditional baby names and often surprise fans with their unique and rare monikers.

Kim has yet to share many details about her son, other than the fact that he is perfect and resembles his big sister Chicago.

However, eagle-eyed fans believe they have discovered the name of their fourth child.

It's the good news all of us Derry Girls fans( and let's be honest, who isn't?) have been waiting for.

There were suggestions of attraction between Erin and James in the first two seasons – and obviously *SPOILER* the finale of season 2 when they went to the school dance together.

I first thought that she secretly harboured feelings for him when she was having NONE of him losing his virginity to the Russian exchange student.

That's when I was like ehhh, she's repressing a few auld feelings there.

Nicola Coughlan, who plays Clare, then said, ''Ooooh, Jerin! Jerin!"

Lisa MGee, creator of Derry Girls, previously told Radio Times, ''I think there might be. I've always thought James likes her, but I think he maybe doesn’t even understand that yet, and I don't know when that'll, it might happen when they're much older, so it might not actually happen in our show.''

This is the best news ever – it's so obviously they fancy the arses off each other – now we just have to wait until season three to see it all play out.

Maisie Williams, AKA the legend that plays the single most badass woman on television, has opened up about her mental health in an interview with Fearne Cotton.

After emerging in the acting scene at an early age through her Game of Thrones role as Arya Stark, Williams has had to face a barrage of negative comments on social media since her fame originated.

Speaking to Cotton on her Happy Place podcast, the actress said that it became “impossible to turn a blind eye” to the ruthlessly mean comments.

“It gets to a point where you're almost craving something negative so you can sit in a hole of sadness,” she added. “It's really bizarre the way that it starts to consume you."

Maisie explained that she finds herself experiencing life-altering feelings of self-hatred, which must be incredibly difficult to overcome. “It's something I'm really trying to break free from at the moment," she said.

"I went through a huge period of my life where I'd tell myself every day that I hated myself. It got to a point where I'd be in a conversation with my friends and my mind would running and running, and I'd be thinking about all the stupid things I've said in my life and it would just race and race.
