The ISPCA has asked for the public’s assistance in re-homing 44 cats that were seized in one house in Meath.

They explained that the cats and kittens were in good health, but there was a major overcrowding issue in the home, making it an unsafe place for the cats.

It is understood that the ISPCA was alerted by a concerned member of the public. An inspector called to the house to discover that the cats were “allowed to have bred uncontrollably.”

They revealed that there were originally three cats in the house, but because they weren’t neutered or spayed they produced numerous litters in as little as three years.

The ISPCA explained that they removed the cats from the home because of the “dangerous overcrowding situation.”

They added that it was only a matter of time before “more serious welfare issues arose.”

They have asked the public to be more responsible and stressed the importance of neutering and spaying their cats.

The 44 cats now need to be rehomed, and the ISPCA needs the public’s help in finding a safe place for all the cats and kittens.

If you’re interested in taking in one of the cats or kittens and offering them a forever home, you can contact the ISPCA here.

The Union for Transport Workers (NBRU) has called upon Minister of Transport, Shane Ross to establish transport police.

The request comes as anti-social behaviour and violence have risen on trains over the last two years.

Irish rail recorded 1,000 incidents during that period of time.

The real figure, however, is expected to be much higher.

The extent of the problem was unveiled through documents obtained by the RTÉ's This Week programme.

The records showed reports of aggressive behaviour, criminal damage, fighting and attacks against staff, according to the programme.

The National Bus and Rail Workers Union believes the official record doesn't reflect the number of cases actually occurring.

Dermot O'Leary, NBRU chief, said he has written to the Minister for Transport, in relation to the problem.

He has requested the establishment of dedicated transport police, based on the model used in the UK.

"Some of the incidents that are happening these days, unfortunately, are not being reported.

The underlying point is that there is a lot of anti-social behaviour and a lot of assaults on staff members," said Mr O'Leary.

Irish Rail did confirm that since the start of last year, over 1,000 incidents of anti-social behaviour were logged on trains.

This includes aggressive behaviour, fighting, criminal damage, and attacks on staff.

Barry Kenny, a spokesperson from the company said in response to the rise, they have increased security.

"We have 45.5 million passenger journeys a year so obviously the vast majority of people travel without incidents.

"We have increased our security resources to help deal with anti-social behaviour with 21 percent more now than two years ago," said Mr Kenny.

As a healthy breakfast or a tasty snack, granola has to be one of our favourite foods!

While store-bought versions can get quite pricey, none of them can even compete with homemade granola.

We have made this recipe over and over and we seriously think it is the best you can find. And believe us, no need to be a chef to get it right.

When your granola is cooked, let it cool down, add some toppings of your choice (if you fancy it) such as chopped chocolate, goji berries or dried cranberries, then store in a jar and enjoy!

The best ever granola

Ingredients

  • 300g rolled oats (you can use porridge oats but it's better with rolled oats)
  • 200g nuts (whatever you can find, pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts, cashews, almonds…), roughly chopped
  • 50g seeds (sunflower, chia, sesame, pumpkin)
  • 2 tbsp coconut oil, melted
  • 5 tbsp honey or maple syrup
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp sea salt flakes

Method

  1. Place parchment paper on a large baking sheet. Heat the oven to 150°C.
  2. Place the rolled oats, chopped nuts and seeds in a large mixing bowl and mix.
  3. Add the melted coconut oil, maple syyup and vanilla extract and mix well until the oats and nuts are well coated.
  4. Add the cinnamon and sea salt flakes and give it a last stir.
  5. Transfer onto the baking sheet and spread to create an even layer.
  6. Bake for 10 minutes, then stir and bake for a further 10 minutes. Mix again and bake for a further 5 to 10 minutes if needed. You want the oats and the nuts to turn into a nice golden colour.
  7. Remove from the oven and let cool completely before transferring into a clean jar. It can keep up to one month but let's be honest, it will be long gone.

Chef's tip: keep a close eye on the tray when it bakes as nuts burn really easily.

Foodie Jen Phanomrat was utterly delighted when her boyfriend, best friend, and partner in blogging Leo Samanamud popped the question recently.

The couple has been together for nine years and runs the popular food blog and YouTube channel Just Eat Life together.

They weren't expecting, though, that their happy news would be met with such backlash against the engagement ring Leo selected.

"Where's the ring?" one person asked, while another wrote, “So are we all just going to pretend like that ring isn’t microscopically small?”

A post shared by Jen Phanomrat (@jeneatslife) on

Some of the comments got especially nasty, including one that read, "It must suck to wait nine years for a ring that looks like that.”

Jen was taken aback by the negativity. She loves the ring and the man who gave it to her.

She told Yahoo Lifestyle, “He knew exactly what type of ring I’d love. A delicate, hammered gold ring with a tiny pearl. I don’t usually wear any jewellery, but when I do, it’s simple and minimal.”

As well, the blogger said that a large stone would be an impractical choice for a cooking show host, as her hands often get messy in her line of work.

The best part of the ring, in Jen's eyes, can't be seen in the photo she shared.

A post shared by Jen Phanomrat (@jeneatslife) on

“What mattered to me the most was the tiny detail on the inside of the ring," she explained.

"He asked the ring maker to inscribe the initials of our nicknames for each other. I swear I thought I was floating in the air when he pointed it out. My heart smiles every time I see it.”

And while she adores the ring, she obviously doesn't love how trolls have reacted. Being an online personality has always brought some negative comments Jen's way, but these recent ones went beyond anything she'd experienced before.

“I’ve always been an advocate for women supporting women, so I was shocked to see so many females wasting their time replying to each other to dampen our happy moment,” the foodie said.

“I deleted many comment threads to ease the cycles of hate speech. What I couldn’t remove were the memes that people created and shared on Snapchat and Instagram.

A post shared by Jen Phanomrat (@jeneatslife) on

"Another female influencer shared one of the memes, which said ‘Ladies, would you accept the ring and say yes?’ above our photo.”

However, no amount of negativity is going to be able to change the fact that Jen's overjoyed to spend the rest of her life with Leo.

“What Leo and I do want those people to know is that we mostly choose experiences over material things, and we encourage others to think about how they measure value in life,” the blogger stated.

“We made it our priority to travel around the world, eat bucket list foods, and experience dream adventures together.

"That’s all we’ve ever wanted and will continue to do, ring or no ring.”

Mel B's new temporary restraining order against ex Stephen Belafonte has been granted.

The two, who are parents to Madison Brown Belafonte, finalised their divorce in December 2017. However, they still have upcoming legal proceedings.

Now, with this new restraining order, Stephen has been ordered to stay at least 100 yards away from the mum-of-three until the hearing next month, according to court documents obtained by The Blast.

The restraining order does not, however, extend to Stephen's contact with the Spice Girl's daughters.

As well, he is not allowed to record any communication between himself and his ex-wife.

Mel B reportedly sought this order after an incident at their home on May 25 in which the police were called and she says Stephen's 'aggression became so hostile and so severe that the police handcuffed him'.

According to the Metro, Stephen claims that he was only handcuffed because the police were falsely told at the time that Mel B had a restraining order against him.

Feminism is a pretty heated topic in Ireland at the moment, between the push to repeal the 8th amendment and campaigns to close the wage gap taking over Twitter.

Irish feminism has come a long way, and creating true equality between the sexes is closer than it has ever been before.

Here are five fierce and inspiring feminist podcasts from home and abroad:

5. 2 Dope Queens

This intersectional feminism podcast discusses "stories about sex, romance, race, hair journeys and living in New York," according to the description.

Hosted by Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams, this laugh-a-minute American podcast ticks all the boxes.

4. Feminist Heart

This informative podcast on Near 90.3 FM focuses on the development of women's issues in Ireland.

The half-hour long episodes, of which there are four in total, explore topics like education, the gender pay gap, abortion rights, women's Liberation and contraception.

3. Women of the Hour

This podcast is written, hosted and directed by one of the most prominent feminist celebs, Lena Dunham.

The writer-turned-actress discusses a different them each week, from ageing to work to love and sex.

Catch it on Soundcloud and Spotify.

2. Popaganda by Bitch Media

Popaganda is a hard hitting series of episodes which cover a multitude of women's rights issues on an international platform.

The podcast covers modern problems like transphobia, yellow and black face in the fashion industry, and misguided public PR blunders such as the Pepsi ad debacle.

1. IT GALZ

This recently developed podcats the concoction of two self-described "fine-ass feminists" from Dublin.

Jenny Claffey and Lindsay Hamilton run the show, and maintain that the lack of realness in the influencer industry pushed them to create a podcast where real issues are discussed.

"When the whole influencer thing really exploded we definitely noticed a gap in the market for ‘real talk’," Lindsay told The Daily Edge.

"That’s when I think we started to see our conversations as important and that they could help the women of Ireland today who are being fed so much false content."

Oh, and while we have you; don't forget to have your say in the inaugural SHEmazing Awards this May! It's time to vote, and you can do it right here!

While marrying Prince Harry certainly seems like a fairytale come true, the lifestyle also comes with a whole host of rules that royal family members must abide by.

One part of dietary protocol is that the royal family cannot eat seafood during their public duties.

This is unfortunate for Meghan, who told The New Potato magazine that her 'ideal food day' would include a 'leisurely dinner of seafood and pasta'.

There is a very practical reason behind this rule, though.

Royal Butler Grant Harrold told Express that certain members of the royal family follow this rule so that they do not get food poisoning.

“It is a very sensible move to abandon having seafood when out and about on public duties,” he explained.

“We don't want a member of the Royal family having a serious reaction to food poisoning, especially if she is on an overseas tour.”

Apparently seafood isn't the only food forbidden at the royal table.

A post shared by Kensington Palace (@kensingtonroyal) on

“As well as shellfish, it would also be quite appropriate for foods such as foie gras to be avoided,” Grant said.

Andrew Farquharson, Deputy Master at Clarence House, told the Telegraph, "The Prince of Wales has a policy that his chefs should not buy foie gras."

Prince Charles banned foie gras from being served at the royal table allegedly for animal welfare reasons rather than personal health concerns.

They say a picture tells a thousand words, and while a thousand might be pushing it a little, a new study has revealed there could be some truth behind the well-known proverb.

Scientists have developed an algorithm that can determine whether or not an Instagram user is showing signs of depression based on their posts.

According to the study, published by EPJ Data Science, researchers from Harvard University and the University of Vermont assessed just under 44,000 photos from 166 users – 71 of which had a history of depression.

Using insights form previous psychological studies, the photos were then examined on their colour schemes, the number of faces and the number of likes received.

Results showed that people who were depressed tended to post photos and opt for filters that were darker in tone.

The specially designed algorithm was able to successfully identify signs of depression 70 per cent of the time.

What's more, it was able to spot these signs before participants were clinically diagnosed.

However, authors of the study have warned that the research was limited by the relatively small sample size and said that while the findings cannot be applied to every Instagram user, they do provide a "blueprint for effective mental health screening in an increasingly digitalized society."

Love is one of the most pure and powerful human emotions.

On the one hand, falling in love can be one of the most magical experiences life has to offer. It's a feeling that has inspired some of history's greatest art, music and poetry and has the ability to turn even the most level-headed among us into doe-eyed, irrational, loved-up messes.

On the other hand however, falling out of love can be confusing, thought-provoking, and more often than not, absolutely brutal.

In an effort to learn more about this ever-changing and hugely complicated emotion, writer Arabelle Sicardi took to Twitter to ask her followers to share what exactly was said to make them fall out of love.

As expected, the responses were heartbreaking and eye-opening in equal measures.

Well, if that wasn't enough to completely shatter your hopes of a fairytale romance, we don;t know what will…

In short, love is the worst.

If you're into lists which rank women based on various merits such as looks and philanthropy, then Maxim's Hot 100 List is probably your scene.

This year, the list contained all the usual suspects – Gigi Hadid, Emilia Clarke, Alexis Ren and Jennifer Lawrence to name but a few.

Among the long-limbed line-up were of course, The Kardashians – all but one of them.

Kim, Khloe, Kendall and Kylie all featured on Maxim's list – with big sister Kourtney being left out.

'They're far more than just pretty faces: The women who inspire us are multi-hyphenates, entrepreneurs, and risk-takers," the description reads.

"Now more than ever, we need to celebrate smart, powerful women who are breaking boundaries (and looking damn good doing it)."

We can only assume that this was a major oversight on behalf of the publication, as Kourtney is the definition of the above description.

From launching clothing lines to supporting refugee projects, Kourtney is slaying the game.

Our own Saoirse Ronan was featured on the list in their Screen Sirens section.
