Ever wonder why psychopaths are, well… psychopaths?

Apparently, it all comes down to two personality traits.

According to new research, which studied 49 inmates at a psychiatric hospital, the way psychopaths makes choices is considerably different to how the average person makes a choice.

The study was carried out by Dr Josh Buckholtz, a neurologist at Harvard University, and he explained how people get confused with the feelings and emotions of a psychopath.

"For years, we have been focused on the idea that psychopaths are people who cannot generate emotion and that's why they do all these terrible things.

"But what we care about with psychopaths is not the feelings they have or don't have, it's the choices they make."

Dr Josh conducted brain scans on the 49 inmates and found out two things:

  • The brains of psychopaths are extremely receptive to rewards

  • They barely factor in consequences when making a decision

As we all know, consequences play a major part in the decision making process of the average person, and sometimes it's the only factor we include when given a choice.

Dr Josh continued: "Even though psychopaths are often portrayed as cold-blooded, almost alien predators, we have been showing that their emotional deficits may not actually be the primary driver of these bad choices.

"Because it's the choices of psychopaths that cause so much trouble, we've been trying to understand what goes on in their brains when they make decisions that involve trade-offs between the costs and benefits of action.

"In this most recent paper, we are able to look at brain-based measures of reward and value and the communication between different brain regions that are involved in decision making.

"They're not aliens, they're people who make bad decisions," Dr Josh added.

The CW’s Supergirl has just announced it's latest casting addition and it is proving to be a divisive decision already.

Last weekend, during the show’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2018, producers of the hit show stated that the role of Nia Nal will be played by Nicole Maines, making her television's first ever transgender superhero.

She will join the production for the upcoming fourth season.

The actor, who previously starred in Royal Pains, will play a new member of CatCo’s reporting team.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Nicole said of her character, ''she has this ferocious drive to protect people and to fight against discrimination and hatred. She’s the superhero we need right now.”

It was announced back in May that a transgender character would be coming to Supergirl but now that we have the actor in place, it has gotten very real.

Nicole spoke to Variety about how she feels stepping into this role.

“I haven’t really wrapped my head around it. It feels fitting to say with great power, comes great responsibility.''

She continued, ''we can be whoever we want, we can be superheroes, because in many ways we are. We’ve had trans representation in television for a while but it hasn't been the right representation.”

Reactions to the news on social media have been mixed.

Lots of people are happy with the news, with one writing, ''I'm literally crying right now. I never thought I'd see the day where we'd actually see this happen.''

Others hit back at negative comments, with one person saying, ''so many narrow minded people here, I hope someday you'll be brave enough to open your eyes.''

This isn't the first bit of history-making news to come from the CW this week.

It was just announced that a Batwoman series is in the works, which will be the first live-action superhero series with an openly gay lead at its centre.

“It's such an important issue right now in our society and in the world. And so it seems only fitting that we have a trans superhero for trans kids to look up to. I wish there was a trans superhero when I was little,'' Nicole has said of this news.

Supergirl will return to our screens on October 14th on the CW.

Prince Harry and Sir Elton John have teamed up to fight against HIV infections in men.

The two have been long-time friends. Elton was a close friend to Princess Diana, Harry’s mother, and just two months ago, performed at the Duke and Duchess’ wedding reception in Windsor.

There is no doubt that part of Prince Harry's motivation is to pay tribute to his mother through this noble coalition. Both Elton and Harry had so much love for Princess Diana, and now they get to to share their passion for the same cause.

On Tuesday, they attended the 2018 international AIDS conference and launched their MenStar Coalition.

The two founders donated a total of $1.2 billion towards the foundation dedicated to expanding the diagnoses and treatment of HIV infections in men. What sound lads!

According to Johnson & Johnson, the coalition is a combination of many charities, including Elton John’s own AIDS foundation, Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, and Johnson & Johnson.

Their objective is ‘to [break] the cycle of HIV transmission and ultimately ending the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat by 2030, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa.’

Prince Harry spoke passionately at the conference: “We succeed when we put people at the heart of our strategies. [..]

“This campaign is bravely tackling the root cause of this problem – the lack of awareness of HIV prevention among hard to reach young men.”

The partners have joined forces in order to have a greater impact on fighting against HIV. With one strategy and global placements, they believe they can be more effective in accomplishing their shared goal.

“It is time there was a global coalition to teach men to protect themselves, and in doing so it will teach them to better protect not only their wives and girlfriends, their sisters and daughters, but also critically their brothers and sons,” Elton announced.

The global organisation aims to initiate a self-testing campaign for young men everywhere, to increase access to HIV tests and treatments.

It is lovely to see that Prince Harry remains so close to his mother's friend, and Princess Diana would be proud of their ambition to make the world a safer and healthier place.

Whoever said there's no such thing as a free lunch had obviously never heard of The Back Page!

The eatery in Phibsboro has become well known for giving away free meals to people.

They pick two random names each week – one male and one female – and then whoever is lucky enough to have that name gets to eat for free.

And this week, they are calling on Orlas and Olivers to pop in between 10am and 3:30pm to enjoy a tasty lunch on them.

The sports bar took to Facebook yesterday to announce this week's names, advising people to bring ID because, hey, who wouldn't try to nab themselves some free food?

We just have one little question: is the call-out just for Orlas… or does it include Orlaiths and Orlaghs?

Get ready to hide behind  – well, anything, because Michael Myers has returned for one final killing spree, 40 years after his first in 1978.

The official trailer for Halloween was released last week at San Diego Comic Con and it scared the absolute sh*t out of us tbh.

The sequel follows on from the second movie in 1981 (making the wise decision to ignore the later, more unforgettable sequels.)

Jamie Lee Curtis is back as Laurie Strode, who is suffering from PTSD following the bloody events of that Halloween night 40 years ago.

This time, the plot goes as follows: Michael has been incarcerated in a psychiatric facility since the original night of murders when he is confronted by two filmmakers who want to learn more about his attacks.

Triggered by this, Michael escapes and heads off to stalk and torture women once again –  but he knows one thing: Laurie will be ready and waiting for his return.

There are some changes to Jamie Lee's characters backstory – in this version, she has a daughter, played by Judy Greer, instead of a son.

She is also not the sister of Michael Myers, who is simply a manic, unknown serial killer.

Jamie Lee discussed how these changes positively impacted her character at San Diego Comic Con.

According to Entertainment Tonight, she said, ''it's a movie about trauma. It’s a movie about what happens to somebody when you’re 17 years old and you have this horrible trauma perpetrated on you, and you have no help. This is a woman who has carried, for 40 years, her entire adult life, this trauma.''

Yes, we can imagine being chased by a knife-wielding masked man who has butchered your two best friends would be fairly traumatic alright.

“We are seeing in the world today, primarily women, who have been traumatised in all sorts of ways, physical violence, emotional violence, sexual violence and, in Laurie’s case, actually knife-attack violence… all of those women are having the moment where they will no longer allow that to be the narrative.”

She continued, ''no longer does that define them, that they are standing up and saying, ‘Enough’. And this is a movie about ‘enough’ at a time when it happens to be a national and worldwide message. And so it couldn't’t be timed better, and it couldn't’t have been written better.”

John Carpenter's Halloween has long been hailed a a classic and fans have been sharing their excitement on social media in the lead-up to this latest instalment.

Someone on Twitter clearly wasn't counting down or anything when they wrote, ''12 weeks and 87 days till the #HalloweenMovie drops on theatres!'' while another said, ''amazing how this movie will bring us #HalloweenMovie fanatics together. The cool thing is we have a couple of months to go to grow this family. Gonna be awesome.''

The eagerly-anticipated movie will hit screens worldwide on October 19th 2018 and WE. CAN'T. WAIT.

Ever wondered what the A stands for in LGBTQA?

Well, that would be asexuality, potentially one of the most under discussed orientations of them all.

Asexuality is an orientation in which a person does not feel any sexual attraction.

They experience romantic feelings, but don't have any desire to have sex with their partner.

The difference between celibacy and asexuality is that celibacy is a choice. Like all orientations, asexuality is not a choice.

Celibates can choose to save themselves for marriage or the right person, but asexuals have an entirely 'nope' feeling when it comes to wanting sexual contact at all.

Some describe it as a complete aversion to sex, while others find sex to be mildly interesting but not something they want for themselves physically.

The do still however, want romantic relationships with the right person.

Asexual people can also still identify as gay or straight or bi, when they want to establish a relationship with someone of a particular gender.

Asexuality can sometimes be coupled with being Aromantic, or the two can be completely separate.

An aromantic is a person who experiences little or no romantic attraction to others at all, but can still have the capacity to have sexual feelings.

Aromantics are known on online forums as Aros, while Asexual individuals are known as Aces.

Both sexualities are completely valid, and are still working to carve out better representation for themselves in the LGBT community.

Greek wildfires have reportedly claimed the lives of 60 people in the Attica region around Athens.

The country is experiencing the worst fire crisis in more than a decade, as summer temperatures have been high.

The Press Association reports that Greek Prime Minister, Alexis Tsipras has declared a national three-day mourning period.

A local official reportedly issued the sad news of the death toll to the media after the blaze has destroyed the seaside village of Mati.

The town is located 40 km (25 miles) north-east of Athens.

The fire swept through Mati on Monday and places were still burning into Tuesday morning.

Mayor of the town of Rafina, Evangelos Bournous told Skai TV, that at least 60 people had lost their lives due to the fires.

Rescuers uncovered the remains of 26 victims, both adults and children in an open space.

Heartbreakingly, they were hugging as they passed away, just metres from the safety of the sea.

Nikos Economopoulos, head of Greece's Red Cross, said:

"They had tried to find an escape route but unfortunately these people and their kids didn't make it in time. Instinctively, seeing the end nearing, they embraced."

Rescue services have been called upon to look for missing people.

Emergency workers are using boats and helicopters to get people off the beaches and to safety in a huge rescue effort.

The wildfires are a recurring issue during the hot, dry summer months in Attica.

The flames were fanned by high winds this week.

However, the weather mightn't be the only cause of the current blazes.

Officials quoted by AFP news agency have suggested it may have begun via arsonists looking to loot abandoned homes.

"Fifteen fires had started simultaneously on three different fronts in Athens," said government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos.

The official said in order to "observe and detect any suspicious activity", they had requested drones from the US.

Desperate families attempting to flee to the safety of the sea were met by walls of smoke and flame.

Those who did make it were picked up by Coastal patrol boats and private vessels.

"Thankfully the sea was there and we went into the sea, because the flames were chasing us all the way to the water," said recounted one survivor, Kostas Laganos.

"It burnt our backs and we dived into the water… I said, 'My God, we must run to save ourselves.'"

The death toll is expected to rise.

A blood moon is coming this week, and it could affect our behaviour.

The longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century is said to happen this Friday, July 27th. So, prepare yourself for a gorgeous view of a bright, scarlet-coloured moon for a total of 1 hour and 43 minutes, according to Forbes.

The moon will hide in Earth’s shadow while the sun shines on the planet’s opposite side, causing a lunar eclipse.

A blood moon’s red tinge is due to the effect of sunlight scattering that reaches the moon in an indirect way. (There is a fact to memorise and impress your friends with this weekend).

This phenomenon is extremely rare for July, especially considering the lunar event’s length.

If you want to track the blood moon and see when the best time to watch it is, go to timeanddate.com. We recommend planning a 'blood moon' party on the roof with themed, decadent drinks like Bloody Marys and red wine.

How will this eclipse effect us on a personal level?

It has long been debated if human behaviour is linked to full moons.

What we do know is that medical professionals and police officers say a full moon is their busiest night of the year, and an American study found that 'events associated with human behaviour, such as traffic accidents, crimes, and suicides, appeared to be influenced by the lunar cycle.'

“One survey in the USA found that about 40 percent of the general population, and 80 percent of mental health professionals, believe that the phase of the moon affects human behaviour,” said scientist Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki on ABC.

“And yet, 99 percent of the evidence says that the moon has no effect on human behaviour.”

However, there is proof that the increased amount of light from the blood moon can disturb people’s sleep pattern.

According to an American study, this can result in stress and overtiredness the following morning. There are also some who believe that the eclipse can amplify the symptoms in those with mental illness.

‘The lunar cycle has an impact on human reproduction, in particular fertility, menstruation, and birth rate.'

Therefore, it is tricky to tell whether the lunar eclipse this Friday will affect our moods or not.

Bustle said that those who are signs Aquarius, Capricorn, or Leo could experience behavioural changes during the blood moon

Just in case, make sure to draw those shades tightly closed and be extra careful if you have the sesh this weekend.

The trailer for season three of Riverdale has landed and we have chills. You’ll be covered in goosebumps after watching the thrilling promo for the popular CW teen drama.

The explosive season two finale left us with a LOT of questions, mainly about the dashingly handsome Archie’s faith. We last saw the ambitious singer being led off in handcuffs after being framed for murder by Hiram Lodge.

We also left the Cooper family in quite the distressed state after Betty’s dad Hal was unveiled as serial killer ‘The Black Hood’.

The new trailer gives fans a recap of the previous season finale, but more importantly it features new footage of Archie, Veronica, Betty and Jughead after ‘the worst summer ever'.

Archie tells his friends that he wants them to have a “great, normal Labour Day weekend”. The gang manage to enjoy their trip away, but Betty’s world comes crashing down when she returns home.
