Hundreds of people are reportedly missing and many feared dead after a dam in Laos collapsed.

The incident at the hydroelectric dam in the Attapu province, southeast Laos occurred on Monday, and released enough water to fill more than two million Olympic swimming pools.

It sent flash flooding through six villages and at least 6,000 people have been made homeless.

The dam was under construction at the time, however, the reason for the collapse is not yet known.

Local authorities are appealing for emergency aid for those affected, including clothes, food, drinking water and medicine.
