Yearly Archives: 2014

As the colder weather sets in, we begin to crave food that offers a little bit of warmth and comfort. Unfortunately sometimes a nourishing salad or smoothie just isn't going to cut it!

But before you turn to mashed potato or cheesy pizza, why not try one of these hearty but healthy menu options? These are all ingredients that can be used at home with very little effort, and you'll feel full and satisfied without the guilt!

1. Porridge
The perfect morning option for those freezing cold mornings. Add toppings like berries, a touch of honey, some vanilla essence or some cinnamon for a really moreish meal that is just the definition of TLC. If you're in a rush, bring the dry oats to work and cook them in the microwave, or make overnight oats the night before by allowing the grains to soak in milk or yoghurt in the fridge. See our yummy overnight oats recipe here

2. Sweet potato
Mashed, roasted or blended in a soup – sweet potato is such a versatile food and is a great healthy alternative to normal white potatoes. Sweet potato's nutty flavour and creamy texture makes it the ultimate comfort food – and it just so happens to be bursting nutrients too. Enjoy!

3. Herbal tea
An evening spent curled up in front of the fire isn't complete without a cup of something warm in your hands. Instead of hot chocolate or milky tea, try a soothing herbal tea like peppermint, chamomile or a flavoured berry tea. Not only is it far healthier, but it'll calm you down before bedtime too – a win-win!

4. Pumpkin
Autumn's best friend! Rather than a calorie-filled Pumpkin Spice Latte, get hands-on with the real deal! Pumpkin is a great base ingredient for soups, breads and casseroles and as it's low in carbohydrates it won't leave you feeling bloated like pasta or potatoes.

5. Barley
Forget rice, fibre-packed barley is where it's at when it comes to autumn grains. It can be cooked using an absorption technique, the same as rice, so it doesn't take any extra effort. Choose it as a side to hearty meals like chilli, or use it instead of arborio rice in a risotto. Yum.

6. Pears
The humble pear isn't just for your lunchbox. Stewed or poached with cinnamon and nutmeg, it makes a pretty epic dessert. Add a scoop of ice-cream and you're good to go!

Jimmy Carr was left a little red-faced last night after an inappropriate joke he made got a less-than-desired reaction from the crowd.

The comedian was hosting last night’s Q Awards when he made an ill-conceived “joke” about Oscar Pistorious, who was jailed for five years on Tuesday for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

Jimmy was speaking about toilet queues when he said: “So frustrating. All I’m saying is I can see it from Oscar Pistorious’ point of view.”

Rather unfortunately, the comedian didn’t stop there and went on to say: “That’s not the controversial bit. Here it comes…I blame her. If she hadn’t been in that disabled toilet none of this would have happened.”

The crowd were unforgiving and Jimmy’s comments went down like a lead balloon leaving an awkward silence in its wake.

The comedian then tried to loosen the crowd up and shouted at them: “It’s the f***ing Q Awards, come on!”

He wasn’t oblivious to his mess-up and later told The Mirror: “I think it went all right. I’m going to go home and write some new jokes.”

Might be a good move, Jimmy…

Something tells us he won't be getting a gig stateside anytime soon.

Selena Gomez made a tearful and emotional speech when she acted as host at this year’s We Day in Vancouver yesterday.

The star, who has had a difficult few months dealing with her on-off boyfriend Justin Bieber, urged her audience to ignore the haters and stop being defined by an Instagram like.

We have to say, Selena spoke very eloquently and really got her message across – very impressive!

The singer also quoted her close friend, Taylor Swift when she said: “the haters are gonna hate, just shake it off.”

Now if only she could shake Justin off for good…

Let's face it, the best thing about autumn is the footwear. Ankle boots, knee-high boots… basically anything that comes in a lovely tan leather.

But there are loads of other amazing autumn shoe trends out there that are perfect for transitioning into winter. Here are a few of our faves…

1. Snakeskin
This is a seriously sophisticated print that brings a touch of class to any shoe – just don't go overboard and match it to your bag and jacket! We love these light brown heels from Zara (€69.99) – perfect for that pre-Christmas night out.

2. Chunky platform soles
Tougher boots are all the rage this season – we just know these Quiz boots would be perfect for jumping in puddles and piles of leaves. Or, ya know, just walking like a normal adult. They're a steal at €47!

3. Over-the-knee boots
Channel Peter Pan with some suede over-the-knee style. Think how warm your legs will be! Perfect with a skinny jean and a big woolly winter coat. These olive green ones from Aldo (€150) will see you through to 2015.

4. Prints
Whether it's a heel, a flat or a boot, go for a graphic print to really stand out this season. We love these leopard print lace-up loafers from Office (€47) – perfect with dark tights or jeans.

5. Lace-up boots
Think hiker chic! These black Topshop boots (€98) combine practicality and style – just look at those rose gold buckles. Divine.

6. Strappy sandals
Wow, we never thought these would come back into fashion after we resigned our pair from Junior Cert Results Night to storage. If you're not ready to go for 2001 vintage just yet, splash out on a new pair, like these studded black ones from Office (€70):

Or tone things down with this suede option from River Island (€50):

We all know that feeling too well – it's gone. Your precious, overused phone is GONE! Now no one will know where you are, you have no Google maps to find out where to go and your life as you know it is over. Here's the emotional cycle of losing your phone:

1. Panic
You’ve patted down your pockets and realised you don’t feel your phone – it's not there!

2. Anxious
You slowly empty the contents of your pockets and bag, hoping it's secretly hidden in there…

3. Suspicious
You’re convinced you’ve been robbed. It’s better than facing the fact that you were stupid enough to lose it! Now everyone becomes a suspect.

4. Frantic
You run desperately back to the last place you had it and hope that it’s still there.

5. Hysteria
When your phone is not where you thought you left it!

6. Horrified
When you think of how you’ve also lost all your messages/pictures/phone numbers.

7.  Increased hysteria
You’re starting to feel like you’re on an episode of Without A Trace.

Grey's Anatomy

8. Despair
As you continuously call the phone hoping someone will answer.

9. Embarrassed
As you ask anyone within a ten mile radius have they seen your phone.

10. Determined
You try your best to turn into a detective and log onto 'Find my iPhone', full of hope and determination, before you realise it’s crap and does not work unless your lost phone is connected to WiFi…

So this can eventually end one of two ways:

Immense Pleasure
As, thankfully, someone belonging to the rare kind of humanity found it and handed it in somewhere, and you promise to love and care for your phone like never before and never let it out of your sight again.

Grief- stricken
As the reality sets in and you have to come to terms with the fact you’re not getting your phone back, and even worse, someone else got a free phone from your stupidity. So you are forced to go home and use an old Nokia from the stone age and hope Santa is generous this year.

Chrissy Teigen is never one to shy away from controversial topics – and yesterday’s tragic shootings in Canada were no exception.

The model has been receiving death threats and violent tweets on social media after she wrote: “active shooting in Canada, or as we call it in america, wednesday.”

Many people replied to Chrissy with anger, pointing out that her tweet was not at all funny and incredibly insensitive: “thanks for the neighbourly love in this time of pain in Canada. Acts of terror are not funny.”

Another annoyed followers tweeted: “celebrities, remember you are in the eye of the hurricane what you post on social media will be scrutinized.”

However, Chrissy is standing her ground with the controversial tweet, claiming it was aimed at America’s lack of gun control, not minimising the tragedy in Canada.

The model also shared a screenshot of some of the shockingly violent tweets she has received since making the comment.

It doesn't sound as if the model has any intention of backing down anytime soon – but should she?

The first wave of Kardashian culture didn’t touch me, but now I’m 25 and obsessed with the life and style of a 17-year-old – how did this happen?

Let me take you back a few years; it’s 2009, I’m in college and one of my best friends messages me a video of Kim Kardashian crying hysterically because she lost an earring whilst swimming in a lake. I watch with mild disinterest, shrug and return to my essay, feeling irritably smug. You see, although I wasn't adverse to the odd browse through PerezHilton.com, I was certainly not at the level of Kardashian-worship that had become worryingly common within my group of friends.

The whole Kim K make-up and fashion obsession passed me right by. I can’t do a pale nude lip without looking like some kind of mannequin dummy used to practice first aid on, and bodycon has never, ever been my friend. I had never even watched an episode of the show until late last year, but somehow the Kardashians caught (or should that be kaught) up with me.

Now, in 2014, a colleague and I regularly tag each other in Kylie Jenner’s Instagram photos; we exchange gossip articles charting her lip inflation, and discuss whether she really has had them enhanced. Her confirmed MAC lip shades of choice (Soar and Velvet Teddy, FYI) were my best finds since a 60%-off Sophie Hulme bag last year.

I admit I was briefly depressed upon finding out that Kylie was born in 1997, but it hasn’t deterred me from following her rise to fame.

A recent article from BusinessWeek revealed that Kylie is already a millionaire, and online search trends have been pointing to a consistent rise in her popularity compared to the older Kardashians over the past two years. Beauty vlogger Nic Chapman (one of YouTube’s most popular make-up artists) says that she now receives far more requests for a ‘Kylie’ tutorial than a ‘Kim’.

So why Kylie and not Kim? Kylie’s just cooler, or, as she’d say, ‘a little more chill’ in her approach to style – she’s just more accessible.

I’ve always been more than a little bit attached to my leather jacket, so the all-black wardrobe and ‘90s makeup kind of do it for me. I’m not saying the youngest Kardashian is super-original, but her brand of style is at least a little less predictable than her predecessors. Oh, and let’s not forget that youth is hot. It’s universally appealing, and Jenner appears to be at that rare period where she will probably never be as beautiful again.

Is it okay to obsess? In healthy doses, I think yes. Imitation is the best form of flattery, as they say, and as long as I stick to recreating Kylie’s ‘90s makeup and not her skintight two-piece outfits, I’m fairly safe.

….right?

Lauren Conrad has been sporting the same hairstyle since the early days of The Hills – so it was a surprise even to herself when she decided to go for the chop!

The recently married entrepreneur shared a photo of her new long bob on Instagram, writing: “Got my first haircut in years.”

While the cut is definitely different, the colour has remained similar, that said it still looks stunning. If it ain’t broke and all that…!

Last month Lauren celebrated her honeymoon in Italy alongside her new husband, William Tell and is currently busy working on her brand.

Lauren is the latest celebrity to cut her hair into a bob in what is seemingly a massive hair trend at the moment!

Beyoncé and Jay-Z have gotten married…again!

The superstar couple, who wrapped up their On The Run Tour last month, have reportedly renewed their vows.

A source for People magazine confirmed the news, saying: “They did have major problems. But they worked it out and they’ve renewed their vows.”

Beyoncé and Jay-Z were first married back in 2008, and although a place for the vow renewals has not been confirmed, it is thought to have been in Europe.

During their recent tour, the couple showed a clip of their 2008 nuptials, much to the delight of their fans.

It was also said that the couple are currently house hunting in the romantic city of Paris, which Jay-Z has said is a special place for them for two reasons: “We love Paris. It’s special to us because we got engaged here, and this is where Blue Ivy was conceived.”

Congratulations to the couple, we’re so glad they seem to have finally worked everything out!

It takes a lot of courage to root through photos documenting your teen years, doesn’t it? Had we NO idea what we looked like or were we actually HAPPY with our appearance? Most of us definitely stood by our decision to rock purple hair mascara and eyeliner that would impress Alice Cooper, but now, with the passage of time, we see the startling horror that was our teenage beauty trends. Let’s take a walk down memory lane, shall we? Ladies, brace yourselves.

Eye-liner
We have Avril Lavigne to thank for this one. We spent HOURS outlining our eyes with the darkest kohl we could get our hands on. What did it do for us? Nothing.

Glitter eyeshadow
Oooh, that cheap shimmer and sparkle really brings out your eyes and looks great flaking on to your cheeks, said no one ever.

Poker straight hair
Again, Ms.  Lavigne can take a step forward. If your hair wasn’t straightened within an inch of its life, you may as well give up.  And what about the pre- GHD years? Yeah, we used irons. Clothes irons. On our heads. Moving on.

Chunky highlights
“I’d like a stripe of brown, then a stripe of blonde, then a stripe of brown…” said everyone, everywhere.

Body sprays
The sugary and sweeter, the better, right? If we didn’t smell like a walking strawberry then we were definitely doing it wrong. Subtle notes of a light fragrance? No sir. Now, shake up that can and blast me!

The drama just keeps on coming for Chloe Sims and Elliott Wright!

Earlier this month the TOWIE couple announced their split after a six month whirlwind romance. The pair got together in Marbella earlier this year and had just recently moved in together.

Fans had their hopes up for a reconciliation this week when Chloe and Elliott were pictured entering an Essex restaurant, but the newest episode of TOWIE shows exactly what went on during their meal… and it's not pretty!

Although Chloe and Elliott's reps had claimed the break-up was amicable, it appears that wasn't the case. In last night's episode of the reality show, Chloe blasted her ex during their meal for sleeping with another woman.

"You've been letting everyone think that I'm this b*tch who’s to blame for everything – but you let another girl sleep in our bed," she told Elliott, who defended himself by saying that nothing had happened with the mystery woman on the night she stayed over.

Chloe was (understandably) having none of it, saying "You’re trying to tell me that this girl, who you've slept with before, just climbed into your bed while you were in the shower?"

She added that she was doing Elliott a big favour by even agreeing to meet for a meal. "You should count yourself lucky that I'm here right now because you definitely wouldn’t put up with me sleeping in a bed with another man," she said.

Despite Elliott's pleas for another chance, his former girlfriend said things were "done" once and for all. Looks like that's the end of that!

Actress Beverley Mitchell is no doubt stocking up on all things blue, after getting the news that her second child will be a boy!

Beverley, who is due early next year, first announced her pregnancy back in September.

And yesterday the Seventh Heaven star confirmed the sex of her baby with a cute family snap on her WhoSay account:

The picture was captioned, "So excited that Kenzie is going to have a little BROTHER! Yep, it's a boy! We are thrilled and looking forward to a lifetime of adventures!" Aaaaw!

The 33-year-old welcomed daughter Kenzie last year with her husband of six years, Michael Cameron. Speaking about her first pregnancy, Beverley said, "We didn’t think we were ready, but at the same time, what does that mean… It happened exactly when it should have for us."

The actress has also opened up about how much she is enjoying motherhood. "I think what’s been surprising is just how natural and how amazing it is, and how I really don’t want to do anything else." Despite being content as a full-time mum, Bev is also doing occasional film work – she stars in the upcoming film Toxin alongside Vinny Jones and Danny Glover.

Beverley and her husband wed in a simple ceremony back in 2008, with Seventh Heaven co-stars Jessica Biel and Mackenzie Rosman as bridesmaids. We wonder if they'll be showing up to the baby shower, too!
