Yearly Archives: 2019

by

March is the month for celebrating women – not only do we have International Women’s Day on the 8th, but we round out the month with a day dedicated to celebrating the women who made us – Mother's Day.

Growing up, throughout the years, the calibre of our Mother’s Day gifts have improved dramatically, going from pasta-shell necklaces and sponge printed cards in primary school, to hand painted mugs and scented candles in our teen years using whatever left-over change we could scrape out of our piggy banks and coat pockets.

As adults, we’ve realised that there are few things we can offer our mothers – or aunties, grannies, step mothers: the women who raised us – that can truly express how much we love them, and how grateful we are for all they have done for us, but we attempt each year to continually improve the offerings we present them on March 31st.

These women deserve the world, and while we would love to offer them every corner of it, we have to be a tad more selective to realise an achievable yet awe-inspiring gift.

One such corner of the sweet earth is Provence – the region renowned for its diverse landscapes, blooming fields full of flora and rolling vineyards.

With our busy schedules, we can’t quite bring them there, but we can emulate the wonders of such a place with one of the most powerful senses – scent.

The most transportative of all the senses, scent can deliver us to an entirely exotic plain without us having to leave the comfort of our own homes.

L’OCCITANE'S new range Herbae par L'OCCITANE is inspired by Provence and the wild, lush and abundant grasses that grow there.

The new collection is one of our top picks for Mother's Day, thanks to the combination of L'OCCITANE'S rich heritage, commitment to luxurious scent experiences, luxe packaging and innovative products.

Here's everything else on our gift guide that simply should not be overlooked at this this gift-giving time.

There's a month to go before the hotly-anticipated eight season of Game of Thrones hits our screens.

With the new season on the horizon, hot topics include The Night King (with some even suggesting the villain could take the Iron Throne) and the fate of the White Walker leader.

Whilst these conversation starters are on the tip of our tongues at the moment, there is one factor which is constant, and that's the eye-catching filming locations.

They always look so stunning on film – and guess what?

You can visit them in person and see the jaw-dropping sites for yourself.

Not a bad idea for a weekend away, right?

A  map from Globehunters showcases some of the best GOT filming locations, so you can visit them for yourself.

So first up is Dubrovnik in Croatia – where Kings Landing in Season 2 was filmed in and was first seen in The North Remembers Episode.

And the best news is it's FREE.

Another gorgeous location is Þingvellir in Iceland.

The Entrance to the Eyrie’s true location is there and Season 4 wouldn't have been the same without this stunning set.

Legendary singer and songwriter Rod Stewart, Bataclan survivors Katie Healy and David Nolan and cervical cancer campaigner Laura Brennan lead the line-up for this Friday’s Late Late Show.

In an emotional interview with host Ryan Tubridy, Rod Stewart reflects on family, fame and fortune and discusses why Irish ballad Grace means so much to him.

In November 2015, Katie Healy and David Nolan survived a terror attack at the Bataclan theatre in Paris which claimed the lives of 90 people.

A month later David proposed, and the couple went on to welcome a beautiful daughter in to their lives in 2016. Last December, they received news that no parent wants to hear, and the couple join Ryan to discuss their daughter’s life changing diagnosis.

We’ll also meet Keeva Delaney, the girl who has written a book to raise funds for Cliona’s Foundation, a charity providing much needed funding to parents of children with life limiting conditions.

Earlier this week the HSE confirmed that the uptake of the HPV vaccine has reached 70 per cent, and cervical cancer campaigner Laura Brennan has been front and centre to advocate for the vaccine. We talk to Laura about what the rise in uptake means to her, and we hear about the impact that the campaign has had on teenage girls.

He brought us Irish Mammies, and now author Colm O'Regan is back with a new book: Ann Devine, Ready For Her Close-Up. Colm joins Ryan to discuss what makes the Irish Mammy such a treasured part of our national identity, and why he’s decided to make one the centre point for his first outing as a novelist.

We’ll also be taking a look back at some of Ireland’s most iconic ads, and catching up with actor Joe McKinney 25 years on from dancing in that Guinness ad.

Music will be from James Morrison and we’ll have a performance by Rhythm of the Dance.

Only on The Late Late Show, RTÉ One, Friday, March 15 at 9.35pm

To mark 10 successful years of Global Greening and to celebrate this unique global campaign, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar TD joined Tourism Ireland earlier this month to launch its new book, called Ireland’s Greening of the World.

The book tells the story of Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening since it began in 2010 and how it has since captured the imagination of people everywhere.

A post shared by Ireland (@tourismireland) on

The initiative, which see hundreds of iconic landmarks around the world light up green to celebrate the island of Ireland and St Patrick, first began in Sydney – when the Sydney Opera House went green on 17 March 2010, on the 200th anniversary of an historic event celebrating Ireland, hosted by the then Governor of New South Wales, Lachlan Macquarie.

The campaign has gone from strength to strength every year since then, with around 360 sites (or more) in at least 51 different countries set to take part for St Patrick’s 2019.

Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening complements the Government’s Global Ireland strategy, which will see the initiative grow to 600 participating sites, by 2025.

An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar TD said: “Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening project is a powerful symbol of the impact of our Irish abroad and is an expression of our reach, our shared values and our ambition.

"The Global Greening project, like our diaspora, stretches across the world, to every continent, going beyond our historical connections into where we can now be found.

"As Minister for Transport, Tourism and Trade, I was proud to support the development of this initiative and I encouraged our public buildings to take part in ‘the greening’.  Today, as Taoiseach, I am proud to see that so many places in Ireland and around the world are involved in this project, contributing to its enormous success. Congratulations to everyone that has been associated with this project here at home and around the world.”

Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “It is hard to believe that Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening is 10 years old. To mark the occasion, we have produced a special commemorative book, ‘Ireland’s Greening of the World’. We’re delighted the Taoiseach has agreed to launch it today.

“The success of our Global Greening is due in no small part to the great work that has been carried out across the world by Irish people and the Diaspora. In particular, the support of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Irish embassy network has been absolutely invaluable in broadening the reach of this project over the years.

"More than 70 million people around the world claim links to the island of Ireland and St Patrick’s Day is a truly unique opportunity to reconnect them with their heritage. We will distribute ‘Ireland’s Greening of the World’ through Tourism Ireland’s offices around the world and through the Irish embassy network.”

Ireland’s Greening of the World is available to buy in bookshops and online.

The disappearance of Madeleine McCann is a case that gripped the nation since 2007.

The mystery surrounding the young girl’s disappearance is astonishing. Over £11 million has been spent on Madeleine’s missing person’s case so far.

Netflix is set to release an eight-part series about Madeline, who vanished while on holiday in Portugal's Praia de Luz in 2007.

The series is due to be released on Friday, March 15.

Madeleine’s case is one of the UK’s most high profile missing person cases in history.

Commenting on the series, Netflix revealed that the docuseries will go behind the headlines and will share unseen testimonies from Madeleine’s family, investigators and others.

“By blending new interviews with more than 40 contributors, 120 hours of interviews, archival news footage and reenactments, The Disappearance Of Madeleine McCann goes beyond the headlines and takes a unique look at the facts of the case as well as its impact on media standards around the world,” they stated.

What is going on in the world of Made in Chelsea?

First Little Sammy T announces that he's calling it a day on the E4 show and now two other big names have followed suit.

By ''big names'' I mean two cast members that have been there longer than three minutes and whose names I actually know.

Yes, Ms Louise Thompson and her weird plastic Action-Man fiance Ryan Libbey have left the show.

Tbh, were they even really on it anymore?

The dramz surrounds blonde clones fighting over lads named Digby.

This news comes just days before the show's 159th (sorry, 17th) series starts.

Louise has been partaking in staged run-ins since teh shows second series more than eight years ago, when she was a university student.

She blew up our screens with her constant crying during her relationship with Spencer Matthews, ill-fated time with Andy ''Nostrils'' Jordan and Ultra American Alik.

She then met personal trainer Ryan in 2016 as her and Alik were crumbling.

He made his debut on the show in the show's St Tropez spin-off and the pair got engaged in 2018.

So it seems like all of the old cast is growing up – Binky has a daughter, Spencer has a son, Millie and Hugo are married…even Sam is trying to grow up (kinda).

Now we wait with bated breath for the ultimate man-child, Jamie Laing to also take his leave…yeah, we actually wouldn't hold our breath for that one.
