Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling by Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen has cemented itself in Irish culture, just like the Toy Show and Tayto crisp sandwiches.

Aisling captured the hearts of the nation, swiftly becoming a familiar figure and literary friend to many bookworms on the Emerald Isle.

Her kind heart makes her a character we all want to have a cup of tea with. Her wit brings a smile to your face, even when you’re stuck in traffic on the 46a. Her Irish charm makes you feel proud to live on this little island.

Aisling may be a fictional character, but she feels like a long-lost friend that will show up at your door with a bottle of Pinot Greej during your time of need.

What makes Aisling so special is how the authors share her story with such a great deal of respect, heart and care.

Yes, she is goofy and kooky and is deeply passionate about never missing a hotel breakfast, but she’s the type of person who is unapologetically herself. Something every woman wants to be.

Irish women have fought long and hard for their voices to be heard, for their needs to be met and for their rights to be granted, and Aisling perfectly represents this changing time for Mná na hÉireann.

Aisling isn’t perfect. She makes mistakes, experiences ups and downs like the best of us and is guilty of spending too much money in Penneys, but she is real. She is in all of us and that is why so many people have fallen in love with these books.

They celebrate Aisling in every sense, flaws and all.

The third book in the series sees Aisling prepare for her 30th birthday and our favourite heroine has got a lot to cope with.

Business is booming at her café BallyGoBrunch. Her best friend Majella is expecting the hen of the century, while Aisling is in the throes of a fling with the handsome and mannerly blow-in James Matthews. But when the big birthday hits, Aisling is faced with a huge surprise and an unexpected decision.

Throw in a hapless wedding planner, a mysterious American Visitor, the sudden return of her brother Paul, not to mention her ex John’s face around every corner, and Aisling's got an awful lot on her plate.

When doubts, worries and an unfortunate clash threatens to get the better of her, Aisling needs to dig deep to see if she has enough strength and inspirational quotes to make it through.

Once, Twice, Three Times an Aisling will be published on September 12 and I cannot wait to be reunited with the literary legend that is Aisling.

To mark 10 successful years of Global Greening and to celebrate this unique global campaign, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar TD joined Tourism Ireland earlier this month to launch its new book, called Ireland’s Greening of the World.

The book tells the story of Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening since it began in 2010 and how it has since captured the imagination of people everywhere.

The initiative, which see hundreds of iconic landmarks around the world light up green to celebrate the island of Ireland and St Patrick, first began in Sydney – when the Sydney Opera House went green on 17 March 2010, on the 200th anniversary of an historic event celebrating Ireland, hosted by the then Governor of New South Wales, Lachlan Macquarie.

The campaign has gone from strength to strength every year since then, with around 360 sites (or more) in at least 51 different countries set to take part for St Patrick’s 2019.

Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening complements the Government’s Global Ireland strategy, which will see the initiative grow to 600 participating sites, by 2025.

An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar TD said: “Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening project is a powerful symbol of the impact of our Irish abroad and is an expression of our reach, our shared values and our ambition.

"The Global Greening project, like our diaspora, stretches across the world, to every continent, going beyond our historical connections into where we can now be found.

"As Minister for Transport, Tourism and Trade, I was proud to support the development of this initiative and I encouraged our public buildings to take part in ‘the greening’.  Today, as Taoiseach, I am proud to see that so many places in Ireland and around the world are involved in this project, contributing to its enormous success. Congratulations to everyone that has been associated with this project here at home and around the world.”

Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, said: “It is hard to believe that Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening is 10 years old. To mark the occasion, we have produced a special commemorative book, ‘Ireland’s Greening of the World’. We’re delighted the Taoiseach has agreed to launch it today.

“The success of our Global Greening is due in no small part to the great work that has been carried out across the world by Irish people and the Diaspora. In particular, the support of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Irish embassy network has been absolutely invaluable in broadening the reach of this project over the years.

"More than 70 million people around the world claim links to the island of Ireland and St Patrick’s Day is a truly unique opportunity to reconnect them with their heritage. We will distribute ‘Ireland’s Greening of the World’ through Tourism Ireland’s offices around the world and through the Irish embassy network.”

Ireland’s Greening of the World is available to buy in bookshops and online.

We all recognise a part of ourselves in fictional female characters, whether that’s Bridget Jones and her goofy personality or Katniss Everdeen and her loyalty to her family and friends.

However, I don’t think us Irish women relate to anyone as much as Aisling, the protagonist in the best-selling book Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling.

Aisling’s story continues in the sequel The Importance of Being Aisling and reading the second instalment felt like I was reuniting with an old friend.

Her obsession with The Corrs, her lunchtime trip to Dunnes Stores to find a new ‘shumper’ and her determination to never miss a free hotel brekkie makes Aisling one of the most real female fictional characters.

After quite the emotional year things seem to be getting back on track for Aisling. She’s been enjoying many a glass of Pinot Greej with Sadhbh and co., she’s become accustomed to Dublin’s brunch addiction and she's even rekindled her romance with John.

However, she is still struggling to deal with the loss of her dear Daddy as Aisling, Mammy and her brother Paul are facing their first Christmas without him.

Anyone who has lost a family member knows just how hard that first Christmas is. Ever the positive person, Aisling seeks joy in the little things like Auntie Shelia’s famous stuffing and doing the ‘Big Shop’ in the new Aldi with Mammy, but that heartache is still there, which makes this book that little bit more personable.

Us Irish aren’t known for expressing our feelings and this is perfectly portrayed in the way Aisling and her family deal with Christmas without Daddy. The secret tears and unfulfilled traditions are oh so relatable for many readers.

What I adore most about Aisling is her ability to see the light in even the darkest of moments. Her “Ah sure, it’ll be grand” attitude is infectious in this tale and part of me felt proud of her for continuing on despite the hurdles life throws at her.

When things at PensionsPlus go awry, Aisling has no choice but to abandon her life in Dublin. She returns home to Mammy and That Bloody Cat, but before she knows it she's planning an escape route when life in Ballygobbard is too much to handle.

Aisling jets off to Las Vegas with Majella and Sadhbh in tow and the trip gives her the confidence boost that shows Aisling she’s capable of a hell of a lot more than she ever gave herself credit for.

The Importance of Being Aisling is full or warmth and that unique Irish wit. It'll be a comfort to you on those dreary Autumn evenings and your best companion on your commute to work

The Importance Of Being Aisling: Country Roads, Take Her Home by Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen is published by Gill Books.
