The second series of Derry Girls is set to end tonight and we must admit we’re feeling pretty gutted about having to say goodbye to Erin, Sister Michael, Grandad and co.

The second instalment of the hilarious Irish series has gone by in the blink of an eye but we’ve adored every minute.

This series had many iconic moments including Gerry making sambos at the funeral and the frantic journey to Belfast for the Take That concert.

Clarins Ireland is supporting a two-year research project on bees at Maynooth University department of biology.

The research is centered around improving the survival rates of honey bees and is the perfect fir for Clarins as nature has always been a primary source of inspiration for them.

The Clarins Group believe in beauty that respects the planet and it has been an integral part of core brand values since Jacques Courtin first developed his iconic treatment oils back in 1954.
The research at the university will be conducted by Rachel Ward under the supervision of Professor Kevin Kavanagh and Dr. Mary Coffey.

So what will it be researching?

The project will examine the immune response of winter bees, which can live for up to six months but may be susceptible to infection.

The project will also analyse the effect of different treatments on the immune system of bees and identify the optimum time for treatment to ensure the survival of hives through the winter.

Eoghan O’Sullivan, General Manager, Clarins Ireland said, ''As a company, Clarins Group uses over 250 plants and flowers in the formulation of our products. Honey bee’s and their role in our natural environment, now more than ever, is vital.''

He continued, ''It is important that we understand how to improve Irish bee health and survival rates through the winter period. The importance of this study will allow other countries and beekeeping communities to analyse, interpret and improve the survival rates of the over-wintering bee.''

Insects are responsible for pollinating a wide range of food crops which account for approximately 35% of our food intake with a global value of $135 billion.

As well as producing honey, Honey bees are important pollinators and their populations are also under threat.

Beekeepers face many problems in maintaining populations of honey bees in Ireland and can lose up to 25% of their hives each year due to disease or adverse weather conditions.

The results of this project will greatly assist Irish beekeepers in maintaining bee populations and the findings will also have direct benefits for beekeepers in other European countries.

Best of luck to the project and well done to Clarins for getting involved with such a fantastic initiative.

Gunner, I will miss the fact that I’m going to miss out on the cutest, cutest, cutest little boy’s early years but it’s not worth it.''

She added, ''This is me actually exiting my family. I’ve tried to be nice to her for 10 years because I love my brother. It never changes. They flip the switch on me and I have no idea…None of it makes sense.''

Do You Really Need a Mattress Foundation?

A mattress foundation is the base of your bed. It’s made with a wooden frame and metal rods or springs that support the mattress. The mattress foundation makes sure the mattress is placed correctly so the mattress can support your body throughout the night.

But do you really need a mattress foundation? Here’s the answer to that question.

Why should you use a mattress foundation?

A memory foam mattress foundation raises the mattress so you can get in and out of bed more easily. The foundation also absorbs shock as you sleep, and it slows down wear and tear on the mattress. A mattress foundation is generally put on top of a metal or wooden bed frame, which is attached to the footboard and headboard.

It’s also common to see a mattress foundation used with a mattress alone. In this scenario, the foundation is placed directly on the floor. If you can sleep comfortably without a full bed set, this could be a good option for you. Mattress foundations have both pros and cons and it’s important to understand both sides before making a decision.

Advantages of having a mattress foundation

A high-quality mattress foundation can offer several benefits as you sleep.

Additional support

When you place your mattress on top of a strong foundation, the mattress won’t sag. Your mattress will feel more supportive. Getting a good mattress foundation can ensure you feel comfortable and have a good night’s sleep.

More height

A mattress foundation can add up to 16 inches of height to your mattress. The final height is just the right size for you to get in and out of bed. What’s more, a foundation makes your bed compatible with most nightstands — nightstand companies make their products assuming you use a mattress foundation.

Improves longevity

A well-made foundation maintains the structural integrity of your mattress by absorbing the weight and motion that you place on the mattress. This allows your mattress to maintain its original shape longer.

Enhanced airflow

A mattress foundation helps with the circulation of air in your mattress. A mattress foundation that promotes the breathability of your mattress will prevent you from sleeping hot.

Protects mattress

Mattress foundations lift your mattress from the ground, ensuring that the mattress stays clean from mold, dust, and dirt. Foundations also hold your mattress in place. A good foundation will prevent your mattress from moving as you get in and out of bed.

Disadvantages of having a mattress foundation

Mattress foundations have a lot of benefits. But they’re not without potential problems.

Foundations are costly

Mattress foundations can get expensive. If you put price before value, you might end up passing over many good mattress foundations in search of the perfect price. But if you go for the cheaper foundations, you risk running into issues after a few months of use — which could ruin your whole sleep experience.

Discomfort

If you have knee or back issues, your mattress foundation might cause discomfort, especially if you place the mattress foundation directly on the floor. You’ll have to exert more effort to get up. You can solve this, however, by adding a side bed close to the mattress and the foundation to support you as you get up.

Deterioration

No matter how careful you are when choosing a mattress foundation, it will wear out and lose its support after some time. When this happens, you’ll have to find a replacement, which costs even more cash.

Little storage space

Storage space under the bed helps create room for more equipment and furniture in the bedroom. But this space can be significantly reduced or even eliminated when you use a mattress foundation directly on the floor.

Do you need a mattress foundation?

For most people, getting a mattress foundation is a smart idea. If you have back and knee pain, a foundation is especially important. If you decide to shop for a mattress foundation, settle on a budget and consider the type of mattress you have. Find a foundation within your price range and the quality of your sleep will make the price 100% worth it. And if you’re not quite sold on the idea, talk with your doctor or physician about whether you need a mattress foundation and what kind is right for you.

Veganism – it's taking hold of the world and it seems that everyone is becoming or has become vegan these days.

Ireland has definitely caught up with its European counterparts when it comes to giving meat the chop from our diets.

When ranked, the most popular countries for veganism in 2018 shows that Ireland came in at…number eight.

Looks like the days of Irish stew are long behind us.

Veganism means nothing animal based – so no meat nor fish nor dairy nor honey.

As well as food, it also means embracing a lifestyle where you don't wear leather or wool or visit the zoo.

For people, it all means different things for different people – for some, it's all about animal rights and others it's about having a healthier diet.

So where do other countries come on the list?

The vegan diet is becoming so popular in Ireland that last year Deliveroo reported a 73% jump in vegan orders across the country through its app, clearly showing there’s a change in the air.

And when it comes to veganism in Ireland itself, the top five places are as follows: Bray (Score 100), Galway (Score 90), Dublin (Score 83), Cork (Score 81), Waterford (Score 78).

In the era of eyelash extensions, LVL lash lifts and permanent tints, mascara is still king when it comes to emphasizing our lash lines.

Whether you're a fan of a curved brush, a fat lash effect, or a simple swipe of definition, mascara can be pricey.

Luckily, Penneys is on the ball, and have a selection of raved about mascaras on offer – all for €3.00.

Image result for mascara

One of the mascaras in particular is gaining quite the hype, with PS… fans raving about it on the comments section.

The PS…Fake It mascara has been compared as a dupe for Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara numerous times, and the reviews speak for themselves.

'The fake it. Omg just bought it few days ago. It’s insanely good,' one wrote.

Fake It is also the most purchased mascara in Ireland, according to Penneys, so they must be on to something good.

The Aqua Lash mascara is also a fan favourite – and it's both waterproof and enriched with Vitamin E for healthy lashes.

It seems that beauty lovers with sensitive eyes are all about this €3 offering, with one commenting: 'I love your aqua lash mascara!'

'Been using it for a while now and its sooo good! I have sensitive eyes and it doesn't irritate them at all.'

One of the big questions we ask ourselves when it comes to beauty products is 'is this ethically made?' Thankfully in the case of these mascaras, the answer is yes:

Last year, Penneys PS… Beauty range was officially certified as a completely cruelty free brand, so if you're shopping there, you no longer need to stress over the unknown impact your purchase could have on animals.

The Leaping Bunny mark the PS… collection has been awarded by Cruelty Free International means that the ingredients and manufacturers have been meticulously examined, and found to be completely cruelty free.

As for how to apply, Penneys sought some tips from their favourite makeup artists to get the most out of our new mascara.

'Always so vertical and then flip horizontal to really get every lash and make them full,' one detailed.

'Start from the root of the lashes and wiggle upwards,' explained another.

'Wiggling your mascara wand through your lashes will give your wand that tight fit up against every lash.'

Last Autumn/Winter, customers bough nearly 900,000 mascaras from Penneys across the globe – so which one will you be picking up on the way to the till?
