Hollywood's need to make the film industry more inclusive extends beyond the silver screen itself, to the reviewers of movies as well.

After all, they're the ones determining Rotten Tomatoes scores and swaying viewers' preferences (and more importantly, their ticket purchasing choices).

It honestly comes as no shock at all then that these film critics are, on the whole, mostly white and male.

Researchers from USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism found that men wrote 77.8 percent of the nearly 20,000 reviews on the top 100 films of 2017. Only 22.2 percent of these film reviews were by women.

A staggering 82 percent of the reviewers were white. Just 18 percent of film critics in the report were from non-white backgrounds.

As well, at top publications the gap between film critics who were white and those who were people of colour widened to 88.8 percent and 11.2 percent, respectively.

Women of colour are especially underrepresented in the field of film criticism.

Female reviewers coming from non-white backgrounds made up 4.1 percent of the reviews sampled in the report.

That drops to just 2.5 percent when looking at top critics, putting the ratio of white male top critics to female top critics of colour at nearly 27 to one.

Commenting on this, the report's authors wrote, "The dearth of underrepresented women is startling in its own right, but more so when considering the invisibility of women and girls of colour on screen in film.

"We would expect that female reviewers from underrepresented backgrounds would be more likely to notice the absence or misrepresentation of women of colour on screen.

"Yet, the very critics who might be attuned to these issues rarely review films—even films with women of colour in leading roles."

If all of this is making you hot under the collar, you're not alone.

The team made recommendations that may help drive change, including a suggestion that sites show how many of their reviews were authored by people of colour, queer people, and other marginalised groups.

This way, readers can see whether a film's rating is skewed by male and/or white voices.

One small way you can help combat this disappointing trend of underrepresentation is by supporting women of colour who are film reviewers as well.

Just to get you started, here are a few ladies whose incredible work you can support: Angelica Jade Bastién, Emily Yoshida, Valerie Complex, and Kristen Lopez (who's also outspoken on discrimination against disabled critics).

While we're delighted that Dublin plays host to some of the biggest names in music on a regular basis, if you're not from the Big Smoke, the costs of concert attending can get steep.

There's the cost of getting up to the capital from wherever in the country you hail, getting back home again AND if you're relying on public transport, there's a chance you might have to shell out for an overnight stay after the concert.

Irish Rail is taking steps to combat this, and with Taylor Swift taking to Croke Park stadium this Friday and Saturday, the train authority has decided to add additional services to run after the concert to get you home safe.

If you're from Galway or Cork, you;'re in luck, here are the times of the additional services after the gig:

  • Dublin Heuston to Galway 00:30hrs
  • Dublin Heuston to Cork 00:40hrs

As for getting to the gig, an extra train at 9.05am has been added from Tralee to Dublin Heuston.

If you're planning on getting any of the extra trains, it's worth noting that pre-booking as a must.

Each of the 209 women or their next of kin, for those who have passed away, will receive €2000 in compensation.

The government's decision to offer the immediate payment was on the back of Dr Gabriel Scally's progress report.

On Tuesday, the Cabinet discussed the report and adopted the recommendation made by Dr Scally, to provide the money to the affected women.

Dr Scally is chair of an independent team who are putting together an inquiry.

They are investigating why women were given a false, all-clear on their smear tests.

The purpose of the payment was to remove any financial obstacles for those women who wanted to contribute to the inquiry.

In a statement, the Minister of Health, Simon Harris said the compensation is solely to allow voices to be heard and would not impact anyone seeking further payment.

"Following the approval of Government, I am making arrangements for the ex-gratia payment as recommended by Dr Scally. This payment relates to addressing any financial obstacles women might encounter in having their voices heard as part of his work.

It would not be a bar to further payment in due course. I have also requested Dr Scally to identify arrangements that he could put in place as part of his inquiry to undertake the process of structured conversations."

Mr Harris also said the report found that consent forms at the time of smears are "a major strength" in the Irish healthcare programme.

Additionally, the evaluation also identified areas of improvement for the service, as the Minister said:

“He does make a number of important recommendations to improve the information provided to women, including strengthening the statements on the limitations of screening. I will immediately ask the HSE to implement the four recommendations related to this."

The report reviewed by the Cabinet is an updated version and is not yet completed.

The final copy was due at the end of the month, however, it has been forecasted that there will be a delay.

The extra time comes as those affected were asked to come forward on a voluntary basis.

This means Dr Scally has not spoken to the majority of those impacted.

If you're lucky enough to be going to the T Swift gigs on Friday or Saturday, there are a few things you need to know before you put on your red lipstick and head to Croker.

First off, doors are at 5:45pm, Charlie XCX goes on at 6:30pm, and she's followed by Camilla Cabello at 7:15pm (though these times may change slightly because of increased security measures).

Attendees are advised to arrive with plenty of time to spare, and no later than 8pm. You'll need to extra time to go through the security check before all the acts start. No queueing is allowed before the gates open since it could disrupt the residents in the neighbourhood.

And sorry to all of you backpack fans – rucksacks and large handbags should be left at home. There are also no cloakroom or storage facilities available at the site, and bags can't be left at entrances or surrounding areas.

Security checks will be going on, so those who come with backpacks or large bags in tow may be refused entry or experience a bit of a delay. It's recommended that your bag is about A5 size (or 5.8 by 8.3 inches). Everything will be subject to a search.

Don't forget that it's an outdoor event, so come prepped for the weather but leave your umbrella at home as they're not allowed.

Objects that are also forbidden include:

  • Glass or cans
  • Alcohol
  • Garden furniture
  • Selfie sticks
  • Flares
  • Professional cameras
  • Cameras with a detachable lens
  • Video cameras
  • Audio recording devices
  • iPads
  • GoPros

For the full list of prohibited items, you can check here.

Kids under five aren't permitted as the promoter says large outdoor concerts aren't a suitable environment for them.

Under 14s aren't allowed in the pitch standing area, and under 16s must have a parent or guardian with them at all times wherever they are.

The promoters and An Garda Síochána can refuse admission to anyone under the influence of alcohol.

Re-admissions are not allowed, so be sure that if you leave the concert you're really ready to go.

And though we get wanting to beat the traffic, it's requested that concert-goers not rush to the exits after Taylor is done dazzling them.

Speaking of traffic, it's recommended that you give yourself an extra two hours travelling time getting both to and from the event.

Fans are all encouraged to walk, bike, or take public transit to the venue (but if you must drive, please carpool).

Irish Rail will operate additional services on both nights, including a Dublin Heuston to Galway train at 12:30am and other trains to be confirmed. You can check on additional services at their website.

If you're looking for more info on the event (including approach routes), check out the public notice here. You can also email customercare@mcd.ie if you have any remaining questions.

So stay safe, leave the tote bag at home, and enjoy yourself!

Fashion 'gram Superficial House posted a picture of Ariana appearing to wear an engagement ring on their story.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has announced that abortion services will be available in 60 GP clinics across the country.

He feels that this will be a sufficient number to care for the number of women seeking the service every day.

According to The Irish Times, the Taoiseach also said that no GP would be forced to perform an abortion, but under that circumstance, they must refer their patient to a GP who will.

'What we can’t allow is this suggestion that a GP, if he doesn’t provide the service, would then refuse to refer their patient on to someone who would.

'Because essentially that is the equivalent of, ‘you’re on your own, love’ and we’re not going to have that in Ireland any more,' he said.

Varadkar believes that up to six women a day will choose to medically end their pregnancies, and so 60 GP services will be enough for them to have the process be accessible.

A further six women per day will choose termination by taking an abortion pill, and will not need treatment in hospital.
