We all know a little cuddle and hand holding can go a long way if you're upset about something.

However, a new study has revealed just how much holding hands with your significant other can impact you.

Scientists from the University of Colorado have found that when lovers touch, their breathing and heartbeats sync up, and feelings of pain fade away.

The research, which was published in the journal Scientific Reports, is part of a bigger study into 'interpersonal synchronisation', where people begin to physiologically mirror the people they spend time with.

couple, female, holding hands

Paul Goldstein, the main researcher of the study, said that he came up with the idea after his wife gave birth to their daughter.

“My wife was in pain, and all I could think was, ‘What can I do to help her?’” he said.

“I reached for her hand and it seemed to help.”

He continued, “I wanted to test it out in the lab: 'Can one really decrease pain with touch, and if so, how?'”

Man and Woman Couple Wearing Their Silver Couple Bond Ring

During the research, 22 long-term straight couples were tested.

The men were given the role of 'observer' while the women were assigned as the 'pain targets' (fun).

Before any experiments took place, the couples had their heart and breathing rates tested three times; while sitting together without touching, sitting together holding hands, and then again while sitting in different rooms.

After that, the women all received a mild heat pain on their forearms for two minutes. The researchers discovered that the couples synced physiologically while just sitting together.

When the woman experienced pain, and her partner couldn't touch her, the synchronisation "severed".

However, as soon as the men were able to touch their SOs, their heart rates synced back up and the pain subsided.

Paul concluded: “It appears that pain totally interrupts this interpersonal synchronisation between couples. Touch brings it back.”

So, when going through break-ups, people often turn to their favourite songs for some wise words of encouragement.

But, what if we could here those words directly from our favourite artists' mouth?

Wouldn't that be a million times better?

Well, one lucky Twitter user knows the answer.

Rhianna fan, @WaladShami posted a conversation between him and the songstress, in which she offered some pretty sound break-up advice.

He asked, via direct message, "How did you get over your first heartbreak? I've been struggling."

To which Rihanna replied, “Just believe that the heartbreak was a gift in itself!”

“Cry if you have to, but it won't be forever! You will find love again, and it will be even more beautiful!”

She finished off her heartfelt reply by saying: “In the meantime enjoy all that YOU are!!!!”

So, are you sick of living vicariously through your friend's Sanpchat stories?

Wish you could be right there with them?

If so, the app's latest update is going to help you do just that (though we're not sure how we feel about it).

Introducing Snap Map – a new feature that allows you to view your friends location, and the location of other featured stories on a map.

And yep. It's pretty much as stalker-y as it sounds.

The Snap Map is accessed through the camera mode – simply pinch the screen in a 'zoom out' motion and violà – explore stories from around the world.

Once in the map, users can choose whether all friends, some friends, or only themselves can see their location.

Many users have taken to Twitter to criticise the 'creepy' nature of the new feature, and quite frankly, they've got a point.

So, what do you think? Are you on board with the latest update?

Harry Styles' stepfather Robin Twist has died after losing his battle with cancer, his representative confirmed on Thursday.

A spokesperson for Harry told The Sun: "Harry's stepfather, Robin Twist, sadly passed away this week after a long battle with cancer. The family asks for privacy at this time."

A post shared by Anne (@annetwist) on

The popstar served as Best Man when Robin, and his mum, Anne, married in 2013.

Speaking about the day, Harry said that his Best Man speech was the "most nerve-wracking thing."

A post shared by Anne (@annetwist) on

He said: "I practised on my own for days beforehand, on the sofa reciting it to myself. I tried to make it have a bit of everything."

It has been well chronicled that Harry had a close relationship with his stepdad, and our thoughts are with the family at this time.

Lifestyle blogger, Rebecca Burger, has been killed following a tragic incident in which she was struck in the chest by a whipped cream dispenser that had exploded.

The 33-year-old reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest after the gadget malfunctioned.

The dispensers work by injecting gas into a pressurised metal canister, and it has now emerged that one French consumer group have been warning people about the potential threat for years.

Rebecca's family announced her death on Facebook and Instagram where she had around 200,000 followers.

Women's Best, a health and fitness firm for whom Rebecca modelled, also paid tribute to the ''great athlete.''

“We are sad to have to announce the loss of this wonderful soul. Our French athlete Rebecca Burger died yesterday.”

“Rebecca was a great athlete and a kind and generous person with whom to work.”

“Pray for her to rest in peace and for her family to remain strong. We will always be proud of you Rebecca.”

Unfortunately, Rebecca was not the first person to fall victim to the product's dangerous design flaw.

One victim of an exploding cream dispenser told RTL radio in 2013: "I had six broken ribs, and my sternum was broken.

"At the hospital, I was told that if the shock and blast had been facing the heart, I would be dead now."

According to The Independent, one manufacturer had issued a product recall last year, however, it is thought that tens of thousands could still remain in people's homes.

A post shared by Rebecca Burger (@rebeccablikes) on

Yesterday, an example of the product was posted on Rebecca's Instagram along with the caption: "Here is an example of a siphon that exploded and crashed into Rebecca’s chest, causing her death."

"The siphon which caused her death was sealed. Don’t use this product in your homes! Tens of thousands of the faulty devices are already in circulation."

Fans have been paying their tributes following Rebecca's untimely death.

It's safe to say that Clueless is one of our all-time favourite movies.

The kickass female characters, the fashion and the comedic romances are just some of the things we adore about it.

But, according to Alicia Silverstone, it almost didn't happen.

During an interview with Variety, Alicia said that she received a fax from the writer/director of the movie, Amy Heckerling, explaining that the flick wasn't going to make it.

"One studio said no to it because they didn't think anyone was interested in watching a movie about a young girl," she recalled.

"Those people now do kick themselves that they were not part of that film. They were like, 'We don't think anybody is going to care. It's not going to sell tickets.'"

Fortunately, producer Scott Rudin came to the rescue and scored a deal with Paramount, and as they say, the rest is history.

God, are we glad Clueless got made.

Bad news for holiday makers.

If you've yet to sort out you passport for you summer travel adventures, make sure to do so as soon as possible.

A major backlog at Ireland's Passport Office means that some 65,916 applications are outstanding and have yet to be processed.

According to TheJournal.ie, figures released by the Department of Foreign Affairs show there has been a surge in the amount of people applying for Irish passports over the past year.

The increase in numbers is largely thought to be due to the uncertainty around Brexit and Britain's future in the European Union.

The largest increases were seen in the first five months of 2017 when applications rose by a massive 55 per cent.

The outstanding applications are all from applicants in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Great Britain, who applied via the new online renewal service.

It is not yet know whether these delays will lead to longer waiting times but the office are advising people to apply at least six weeks before their intended travel date.

The loved up pair are constantly gushing over their daughter Luna (and each other) and it's honestly the cutest thing.

Keeping that in mind, it was no surprise that the internet went into complete melt down this week after Chrissy hinted that she might be pregnant with her second child.

The no-nonsene queen of Twitter has been open about her fertility struggles in the past, however, the stars latest series of Tweets have led fans to believe that that her and John are expecting, or at least trying for, baby number two.

In January, Chrissy told Extra TV that she was planning to have IVF again saying, "we have a boy on ice."

And in true Twitter style, the speculation followed…

Whether it's sooner or later, we can not wait see Chrissy and John's family grow.
