Yearly Archives: 2016

Well, just go and rip our hearts right out of our chests, why don't you.

If there's anyone that should be invested in a happy ending for Ron Weasley, it's Rupert Grint, who played him in all seven Harry Potter films.

But speaking at a Warner Bros event recently, Rupert revealed he had a very different idea of poor Ron's fate.

Despite defeating Death Eaters, Dementors and Voldemort himself to be together, Ron and Hermione's relationship just didn't last the distance. At least that's what Rupert thinks.

"I would expect Ron has probably divorced Hermione already. I don’t think that relationship would have done very well," he told the audience during a chat at Universal Studios in Orlando.

"[Ron’s] living on his own, in a little one-bedroom apartment. He hasn’t got a job," Rupert continued.

OUCH. Luckily for Harry Potter fans, Rupert's former co-star Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood) interjected, saying, "Don’t say divorced. Say they’ve split up. They can reconcile."

Sadly Emma Watson herself wasn't there to offer her own version of events, but we hope it wouldn't have been quite so bleak as Rupert's one.

In case you didn't know, there is a new Ghostbusters film on the way and the ghost-annihilating foursome are now to be played by female actresses.

But that's not where the gender-bending ends in the film that will be released this summer. .

Janine, who sort of operated as a Ghotbusters secretary in the original films, was the person who received all the calls.

You know, when people figured out who they were gonna call.

The role was originally played by Annie Potts but the internet thoroughly enjoyed Chris Hemsworth swapping his usual buff parts for a character with a touch of geek chic.

We think he looks amazing and it seems that the internet agrees:

Resting Bitch Face, or the ability to look like you want to kill everyone around you with your bare hands when in reality you're wondering if you could replace kale with spinach in that green smoothie recipe, is a phenomenon that plagues many of us.

The evil eyes, the sneer, none of it's intentional, it's just your face's default expression. But now the RBF sufferers of this world have finally got some validation, as the Resting Bitch Face has been proven to be a real scientific phenomenon.

Yep, researchers at Noldus Information Technology carried out tests on images of various Resting Bitch Faced celebs – Kristen Stewart, Kanye, Queen Elizabeth and more – to determine what it is about them that causes people to perceive them as angry or contemptful for no reason.

"We were looking to see if anything popped out," scientist Abbe Macbeth says, explaining that their software tests pictures of unsmiling faces to see what percentage of eight basic emotions is registered – anger, contempt, disgust, fear, happiness, neutral, sadness and surprise.

For most pictures, the face will register as 97% neutral, but it's the last 3% that matters.

Celebs like Jennifer Aniston and Blake Lively registered as "happy," while celebs like Kristen Stewart, Anna Kendrick and Kanye registered as "angry" or "contemptful."

Ouch. Apparently it's all down to subtle facial quirks like "one side of the lip pulled back slightly" or "the eyes squinting a little."

So there you have it. Next time you're told to "cheer up, love," you can rest easy in the knowledge that science wanted it like this.

Remember when the day-to-day activities of primary school were the centre of your universe?

When playing with Mála was a viable lesson, arts & crafts on a Friday was the highlight of your week and you learned essential life skills such as how to use a ruler and how to knit funky patterns.

You can still put those skills to the test this year by knitting a mini-hat for Innocent's Big Knit. What better way to use those essential primary school life lessons than to raise money for Age Action by working on some super cute patterns

And as if knitting wasn't one of the best things you did in primary school, here's 11 memories every Irish person has from their school days:

1) When you lived for PE days

Especially because you could wear your comfy trackie.

2) When you had too many lined copy books to know what to do with

And they made the transition to A4 sized notebooks in secondary school a serious challenge.

3) You never recovered from the stench of thirty lunchboxes opening at break time

An unimaginable odour

4) When teacher would let you watch a movie all day

The sheer joy of seeing a that big block of a television being rolled into the classroom

5) When "an bhfuil cead agam dul go dtí an leithreas?" became synonymous with "I'm just really bored"

Because no one actually has time for maths

6) When your mammy spent hours covering all your books in plastic and you didn't care

The books still looked a state at the end of the year

7) When the end of the world was a lunch break spent in doors

Damn you, rain!

8) When poster competitions, window displays and art destroyed friendships

If you diss my drawing of a tidy town, prepare to feel my wrath

9) When paring pencils at the bin was the best excuse to chat to friends during class

Even though teacher always knew what you were up to

10) When you were the undisputed champion of 'chasing'

Though you never ventured far from 'den' and you often cheated and called 'time out' just before you got caught

11) Your back has never been the same after unnecessarily oversized and stuffed schoolbags

Unless you got a wheelie-bag and were the coolest person in school

Nailed it!

Check out the amazing patterns on offer at Innocent's Big Knit this year and get involved

How can you tell if you two are really serious, or if it's just a flash in the pan?

Well, rewind ten or fifteen years and you'd have to cross your fingers that one of your friends overheard him mention you to HIS friend down the pub. Nowadays though, it's much easier to figure out what's what.

According to a new survey by Netflix, over half of couples (51%) believe that sharing the same Neflix login is a big indicator that things have turned into this-could-be-love territory.

In fact, 17% of those polled said they wouldn't even consider such a *gasp* drastic move until they were engaged or married.

With that in mind, we've put together a list of modern-day indicators that your relationship is built to last…

1. There's always a little flame next to his name on your Snapchat
The legendary flame emoji only appears if you have both been sending snaps to one another for multiple days in a row. So that definitely means it's love.

2. You follow each other on Instagram, Twitter, Periscope you name it.
Got to support bae, like.

high five friends ross rachel

3. And you'd NEVER leave his latest tweet/photo hanging without at least liking it
No need to comment, mind you, a cheeky like will do

4. You share a Netflix login because you watch all the same shows anyway
It's just convenient.

5. And you wouldn't DARE skip ahead on House of Cards without your other half
In fact, 60% of the couples Netflix surveyed said it was just more fun watching shows with their other half than without them.

6. Your phone's wi-fi connects automatically at their house
And at their parents' house too, if you two are really serious

7. You keep a spare phone charger at his house
No more frantic 'DOES ANYONE HAVE AN iPHONE 4 CHARGER?' emails in work

8. Anyone looking back through your WhatsApp conversations would get a shock
Not because of anything dirty, mind, but because the number of AWFUL selfies you send each other

9. You two definitely bonded over your shared love of true crime dramas/awful 90s rom-coms/gruesome nature documentaries on your first date
Finally, someone who likes what you like – or who has just done his research, like this guy:

We saw an amazing Never Have I Ever game played with the boyos of One Direction on the Ellen DeGeneres show, but pairing up Rihanna with a clearly bemused George Clooney was a great call.

While George is out promoting his new Coen brothers film, Hail, Caesar!, Rihanna is also on the promotional bandwagon as she garners publicity for her new album ANTI.

And what better way to promote their various projects with a combined game of Never Have I Ever.

With questions such as "Never have I ever texted a nude selfie" and "Never have I ever hooked up with someone over 50", Ellen was certainly not holding back on the question front.

Later on in the show, George spoke about his marriage proposal to Amal.

"I plotted the whole thing out. I had the ring hidden behind her. I had music playing. Everything was planned out and I've cooked dinner. Usually she'll dress up, and now she's like, 'Maybe we'll just order in. And I go, 'No, no, no. I've made dinner,' " recalls the actor.

"Finally I blew out the candle and I said, 'I think the lighter's in the box behind you.' And she reaches around and she pulls out the box and I've got just the ring sitting in there and she pulls it out and she looks at it and she's like, 'It's a ring.'

"I got down on my knee and said, 'I couldn't imagine spending the rest of my life without you.' And she kept looking at the ring and she was looking at me and she was like, 'Oh, my God,'"

"Finally I literally said, 'Look, I hope the answers yes, but I need an answer I'm 52 and I could throw out my hip pretty soon.' And she said, 'Oh, yes.' "

Cute!

What will we do with our Saturday nights from August to December?

Reports circulated yesterday that the X Factor would not be broadcasted for at least one year after the 2016 series has aired as pretty dismal ratings were seen for the talent competition in 2015.

However, an ITV representative has since come out saying that the talent competition will air for at least two more years.

Several publications claimed that there were no current negotiations in place to bring back Simon Cowell's two former hit shows, the X Factor and Britain's Got Talent, for 2017.

Both of the contracts for Simon's shows on ITV expire in 2016 but it seems that the network is making room for the massive show it bought from the BBC.

ITV bought the Voice UK from the state broadcaster in a multi-million pound deal last year.

Ratings for the twelfth season of the X Factor reached a record low of 5.39 million

"Particularly because the X Factor contract is coming to an end and it has been a disaster.

"If The Voice is a success it's unlikely they will bring back the X Factor but if The Voice is a disaster, they still have the X Factor."

So who knows folks!

Matt le Blanc has been announced as one of the presenters of the BBC's revamped hit show, Top Gear.

Yep, the American actor has rather unexpectedly landed a co-hosting role alongside Chris Evans who will replace former hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.

And if you are wondering how this bizarre hosting duo came about, well it turns out that Matt holds the fastest time for completing the Top Gear racing track in the auto show's history.

The 48-year-old first appeared on the show in 2012 where he confessed he was a bit of a car nerd and was highly entertaining as he and Jeremy dissected his lap.

So on the face of it, it seems the BBC may have made a pretty rogue decision but Matt actually came back to the show and helped to host Top Gear: The Races and he even managed to beat the Stig.

"As a car nut and a massive fan of Top Gear, I'm honoured and excited to be a part of this iconic show’s new chapter. What a thrill!" read a statement by the new host.

Matt will be the first non-British person to host the show in it's entire 39-year history on the air.

We may even sidestep the fact that the show is about cars and give it watch.

If you've got a brother, sister, BFF or boyfriend living in some far-flung land, then you'll want to read on.

The folks over at Tayto have put together the most Irish prize package of all time – the chance to fly your loved one home for March 17.

Yep, Tayto will provide return flights for one person from anywhere in the world back to Dublin for the St Patrick's Day celebrations. The lucky scamp will also receive two VIP tickets to the St Patrick's Day festival, to really allow them to celebrate in style.

And if you're not lucky enough to have your bestie flown home, you can still surprise them with a taste of all things Irish in honour of the big day, as Tayto will be sending a box of their famous crisps to 100 runners-up anywhere across the globe.

Rather than launch some random new flavour (Guinness and beef, anyone?) to kick off the competition, Tayto have instead rebranded their classic Cheese and Onion packaging into an uber-Irish version. Behold, Cáise agus Oiniúin:

To enter, all you need to do is purchase a bag of the tricolour-themed crisps and follow the instructions on the packet.

Charlotte Crosby has undergone a total body overhaul over the last 18 months, and now she's turned her attention to her face.

The reality star stepped out in Newcastle this week, showing off her new and surgically-altered nose.

Although the 25-year-old has been out and about in recent weeks, this was the first time she allowed cameras to photograph her without her hand to her face, as she filmed with the Geordie Shore crew at Tup Tup Palace nightclub.

As well as having the front of her nose straightened, Charlotte also had a bump on the tip removed to make it look slimmer overall.

But even after €5,500 in surgery costs and two weeks of recovery time, the fitness fanatic says she's not finished with her transformation.

"I'm not feeling like the perfect Charlotte at the minute. I could definitely be feeling better," she told Heat magazine of her quest to change her face, which so far has also seen her turn to lip fillers and Botox as well as surgery.

For now though, Charlotte is enjoying her altered nose, and says it's taken some getting used to.

"When I looked in the mirror, I felt like it was a different person looking back… because it has changed me face. But I literally loved it."

And it seems one person in particular has been keeping her company while she recovers – her on-off ex Gary Beadle. Charlotte posted this image – much to the delight of fans – just last week:

It's certainly been a busy fortnight for her!

If you purchased a Lotto ticket in Dublin on November 9 last, you might want to get searching for it.

The National Lottery has revealed that a winning ticket worth €1m has yet to be claimed, and in just two days it will no longer be valid.

Winners have just 90 days to claim their prize, before it goes back into the fund.

The ticket in question – with the winning numbers 9, 10, 11, 15, 17, 20 and a bonus of 6 – was purchased at the Bus Stop kiosk in Nutgrove Shopping Centre in Rathfarnham.

"We love to see winners collecting the big prizes, and we'd really like to pay someone the €1m come the end of the week," Paula McEvoy of the National Lottery told the Herald.

"Hopefully, someone will come forward and it will be just a case of jogging people's memories."

As for last weekend's Euromillions jackpot of €66m, although the Irish winner has made contact, they have yet to come forward and claim their prize.

"Naturally, when you become a multimillionaire it takes a bit of getting used to, but we're there to help them," says National Lottery CEO Dermot Griffin.

"We will give them a bit of time and advice."
