Just when you thought the bitterly cold temperatures might hold off for another week or two, Met Éireann forecast a something called a “polar low.”

And while we might not be trained meteorologists, we're going to take a wild guess and say that doesn't sound good.

An area of low pressure looks set to bring wintery showers over hills and mountains on Wednesday night, with temperatures ranging form just zero to three degrees.

Thursday will be another cold day with snow expected to fall over mountainous areas. Daytime temperatures will range from four to eight degrees, dropping to between minus two and plus three overnight.

It's a similar story for Friday, though showers will be confined to northern and western coast, with other areas expected to stay dry with sunny spells.

According to Met Éireann, the further outlook is for continued cold weather with showers, which can only mean one thing – winter 2017 has officially arrived.

Was anyone else up early enough to witness the blizzard that unfolded this morning?

Met Éireann has issued a status yellow weather alert as temperatures plummeted last night, and warns of more snow and ice to come.

"Very cold today, with frost, ice and lying snow in many areas at first," says the national weather forecaster.

"A bright day in most areas, with sunny spells and showers, some falling as snow in the early morning, but mostly of rain, hail and sleet during the day, some of them heavy, with isolated thunderstorms, especially in the west and northwest."

Clearly winter isn't quite done with us yet.

AA Roadwatch has also issued a warning, reminding drivers to be extra careful today during the difficult driving conditions.

"Give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination and use major routes as they are more likely to have been gritted than secondary roads."

"Remember, stopping distances are 10 times longer in ice and snow."

Snow has been falling in various parts of the country as temperatures dropped this week.

Dublin is currently getting a dose of cold weather as snow is falling on the capitol today.

As snow is such a rarity in Ireland, Twitter is already blowing up with excitement.

According to Met Eireann, this weekend is set to be freezing cold, and people are warned to expect "cold with some clear spells and dry apart from isolated wintry showers."

“Lowest air temperatures of zero to -3 to degrees with a sharp to severe frost and some icy patches.”

We're secretly hoping the snow will stick around for a day or two, but drivers should take caution in icy conditions.

All cat lovers know that their feline companion is the smartest thing on the whole damn planet.

So what if it ignored you for a week or scratched the face off you last weekend? That cat knows what it wants, and – like all the greats –  isn't afraid to show it.

But if you're just not that into cats, it can be difficult to understand why cat owners are so impressed by the creatures which slink around their home acting like they run the place.

So, if you need a little help understanding exactly why so many of us are in awe of them, look no further than footage which was uploaded to Cats of Instagram over the weekend.

With over 868,000 views, the wider world can't get enough of this lad who could open his own attraction in Vegas.

We'll let Snow take it form here…

We had been warned that wintry conditions were set to hit the island – and it's now official: it's SNOWING in Ireland.

One caller told 2fm's Breakfast Republic that a bit of a blizzard is going on in Wicklow, while others around the country have been posting snaps of their own mini winter wonderlands on social media.

Kristine Boyd is this morning in Belfast – where the snow is coming down fast and heavy.

And Maeve McGrath in Kerry captured her dog on a snowy walk this morning.

There is also snowfall in Tipperary.

As well as in Ballymena in Co. Antrim.

Met Éireann has said that it will be "very cold today," with "some hill snow in places" which "will turn increasingly to sleet and snow at lower levels this morning, mainly over Ulster, Connacht and west Munster and in remaining areas this afternoon and evening."

And if that wasn't enough to make you want to hibernate, it adds: "Some thunderstorms are likely to develop also. Top afternoon temperatures of just 2 to 4 C., and feeling colder in the strengthening west to northwesterly wind."

Brrrrrrrrrr!

While we are far too late for a white Christmas, those dreaming of snow could be in luck.

However, it wont be fluffy clouds of frozen fluff that falling daintily on our shores.

"Thundersnow," a rare phenomenon occurs when thunderstorms form in wintry conditions, could be en-route to Ireland.

Temperatures are expected to plummet to below zero as freezing weather takes hold of the country.

There is a status yellow weather warning in place by Met Éireann as the country is set for a very cold snap, which could include some snowfall.

If the weather is cold, the rain associated with a thunderstorm can then fall as snow, creating thundersnow.

The weather warning is in place from 3pm today until Saturday.

"The heaviest of the snow fall is most likely over Ulster, Connacht, north Leinster and west Munster and especially so on high ground," a statement on the Met website says.

"There will be scattered showers on Atlantic coasts will move further inland overnight and turning increasingly wintry with snow on higher ground. Lowest temperatures -1 to +2 degrees.

"Fresh to strong and gusty northwesterly winds will back westerly overnight and moderate.

"Later in the night, a frontal wave will pass to the South of Ireland and this brings the risk of sleety rain and snow."

Drivers are being warned to take extra care during the cold snap.

"The main thing is for motorists to give themselves plenty of time if they have to undertake a journey. Slow down and don’t rush," said Roland Hesse, spokesperson for Allianz Global Assistance Ireland.

Extra care should be taken when driving, and while we like the old "don't make unnecessary journeys, don't take risks on treacherous roads" advice, here is a concise checklist for driving safely in difficult weather.

1. Slow down! Leave earlier for work or school. That extra ten or fifteen minutes can make all the difference.

2. Don’t make sudden manoeuvres. Be gentle with braking, accelerating and steering.

3. Leave extra distance between you and the vehicle in front, in case of sudden braking.

4. Have snow tyres fitted. They are not just for snow, they are effective once the temperatures fall below seven degrees.

5. Be prepared for delays. Keep the fuel tank topped up.

6. Make sure you have your vehicle serviced, that the anti-freeze is topped up, and the battery is in good condition.

7. Keep a warm jacket and a blanket in the car.

8. Make sure you have jump leads and other essentials in your boot in case of a breakdown including a high visibility vest, boots/wellingtons, de-icing equipment and a hazard warning triangle.

9. Check that your spare wheel is in good condition and is fully inflated. Some cars may have an inflation repair kit instead of a spare wheel so make sure that you know how to use it.

10. Ensure you have adequate breakdown cover.

While we may have been dreaming of a white Christmas, snow in December is a rarity.

It's the early spring months that deliver a sheet of the frozen white fluff, if we're lucky.

According to Met Éireann, some parts of the country can expect snow from Wednesday and Thursday onwards.

"A band of persistent rain will develop in Connacht and Ulster, spreading to other parts, but becoming more patchy,' say the weather experts.

"Clearer, much colder conditions will follow by Wednesday night, but with occasional showers, some turning to hail, sleet and snow, especially in the northern half of the country."

We've been having a suspiciously mild winter, so realistically we all knew it was going to catch up on us eventually.

Wishing for a white Christmas? Dreaming of magical sleigh rides, hot chocolate and ice skating in the park?

Not this year, guys. According to Met Éireann's Jean Byrne, we’re in for some pretty ‘typical’ Irish weather.

Wintry showers are likely, as it is expected to turn cooler on Wednesday into Thursday, but the probability of building a snowman is pretty slim.

Jean has been studying the charts closely to see what’s in store for Christmas Week.

The highest temperature will be between 4C and 7C. However, it will turn milder towards the end of the week.

Christmas Eve will be cold again with some more wintry showers, so keep your winter woollies to hand. Similar conditions are predicted for Christmas Day, with no hope of a white Christmas.

We live in hope of this magical sight.

If the recent spate of freezing weather has you anticipating a white Christmas, you're not alone.

While battling through Baltic winds, hopeful members of the public have decided to put their money where their mouth is by placing bets on the likelihood we'll see in Christmas day to a white landscape.

"Frosty weather has people dreaming of a white Christmas and interest in the betting has increased over the past couple of days," Hayley O'Connor of Ladbrokes explained.

And with Met Éireann having previously released statistics that suggest we may indeed be in for a white Christmas, it's no real surprise that the general public are keen to cash in on the calculations and bookies are keen to now slash the odds.

"Records over the past 70 years show punters could be on the money and another cold snap would certainly see the odds further on the slide," Hayley added.

Ladbrokes, which started off with 6/1 odds of a snowy Christmas Day in Dublin have dropped to 5/1 while Cork, Shannon and Knock have dropped from 5/1 to 4/1.

Well ladies, is it worth it?

If you've managed to make it to work/college this morning without have a total meltdown, pat yourself on the back.

Commuters in Ulster and Leinster were given QUITE the treat this morning, with snow, sleet and ice blanketing a large chunk of the country.

While much of the 'snow' turned to mush and slush, certain more sheltered areas saw heavy snowfall. All in all, it was a total disaster, especially for anyone trying to get to work on time.

Buses, trains and LUASes turned into warm, overpacked tin cans:

But anyone with a car really had to suffer:

A few brave souls even risked getting frostbite to stop and take a picture:

And of course there were a few ice-related accidents too.

Plus, the inevitable delays on EVERY form of transport – including planes:

Thank God it's Friday. We could NOT do this all over again tomorrow.
