Love Island

Last night, the world watched in horror as Love Island's biggest drama to date unfolded.

Spoiler alert – if you haven't watched the most recent episode and don't want to know the gory details, I recommend you open a  new tab, watch the episode, and then return.

Megan and Eyal seemed like a pretty cute couple, cosying up on wine tasting dates and enjoying a night of passion in the hideaway.

However, last night, Megan expressed her desire to see other people, and move on from her fleeting dalliance wih the villa's self appointed spiritual guru.

Her head was turned, as the islanders are fond of saying, by the dishy Wes, but as we all know, Wes is currently coupled up with Laura – Megan's friend, who definitely has feelings for the the nuclear and electrical systems design engineer.

Megan quickly embarked on her mission to let Wes know she was interested, requesting a kiss from him in a private chat where she revealed to him that she liked him, and later securing said kiss during a tense game of Snog Marry Avoid.

Laura, understandably upset, dumped Wes and branded Megan a slew of slut shaming slurs (not her finest moment). Wes, as most male specimens do, went un-tarred and feathered by the promiscuity motivated put-downs.

Interestingly, it was what Megan said about her history of female-female friendships that stuck out to me about last night's drama-filled episode.

Megan told the cameras that she found it difficult to maintain gal pals because of instances like the one which just occurred. While it's completely fine if someone wants to place their pursuit of a romantic or sexual relationship over a friendship (frankly, the person being f*cked over by the friend and boyfriend in this situation deserves better) it's what Megan is implying by saying this that is concerning.

I think, that by saying that Megan has no interest in female friendships, she is tapping into an internalised misogyny that allows her to place other women on a lower tier than herself, a tier that she perhaps she feels she shares with the men in the villa.

It's a classic example of an 'I'm not like all the other girls' attitude. But I must ask, what the hell is so wrong with being like other women? And liking and respecting other women for their differences and their similarities?

What could be more humane than treating the feelings of all people you come into contact with with dignity and respect, regardless of gender. By saying the Megan cannot keep friendships with other women, it seems that she is blaming the 'silliness' of other women on this fact – a chilling throwback to the stereotypical notion of female hysteria of the 1950s.

Megan holds herself above the other women in the house and sees herself as the ultimate 'cool girl' by highlighting that she relates more to the men in the villa – which is reflected in her adamancy that the exploration of female sexuality is nothing to be ashamed of, on par with male sexual desire.

While she is absolutely right about that, saying: 'I’m a woman. I’m allowed to enjoy sex,' she seems to hold that standard only to herself, as we see reflected in her attempt to shame Laura for sleeping with more people than she has.

While the dating rules and lighting-speed relationships in the Love Island world are strikingly different to actual, realistic relationships, there is no doubt that the basic rules of common courtesy should apply.

Some call it the girl code, I just call it basic humanity. Laura definitely isn't my favourite character on the show (that would be the stunning Samira), but it is clear that she is an open and loving person who wants to be cared for in return, and Megan's mission of infiltration to destroy this on Laura for her own gain is plain mean.

No one likes to be usurped by a romantic rival, and judging by Megan's infuriatingly excited expression, it is clear that she holds Laura's feelings far below her own chance at a blossoming relationship, be it potentially fleeting or otherwise.

My suggestion to Megan would be that perhaps she has an inability to maintain female friendships because, rather than it being all the other women's faults, she's just not a very good friend.

It has been reported that Love Island star Sophie Gradon has passed away suddenly. She was only 32-years-old.

Sophie appeared on the reality show in 2016.

Her boyfriend Aaron Armstrong broke the heartbreaking news this morning. He shared a photo of him and Sophie on his personal Facebook page.

“I will never forget that smile I love you so so much baby your my world forever ever and always,” he wrote.

Tributes have been pouring in from fans of the Love Island star online since news broke earlier this morning.

The police released a statement following Sophie’s untimely death:

"At about 8.27pm yesterday (June 20) police attended a property in Medburn, Ponteland, where sadly a 32-year-old woman was found deceased.

"There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding her death. A report will now be prepared for the coroner."

Love Island has gotten a lot of slagging for being a vapid show about generically beautiful Instagram models riding in the sun.

However, the girls of the group took to discussing one of the biggest political issues of our time last night – so Love Island nay sayers, buckle up.

In last night's hour-long episode, student Georgia asked the girls what they thought of Brexit, before model Hayley raised some eyebrows by admitting that she had no idea what Brexit was.

Georgia gave a good go of trying to explain the concept of the European Union to Hayley, saying: ''It would mean welfare, and things we trade with would be cut down.'

However, Hayley became more confused, replying: 'So that does that mean we won't have any trees?'

Adding more confusion to the whole thing,. another one of the girls, thought Hayley said cheese rather than trees.

However, the seriousness of the Brexit situation was grasped when the girls discussed the possibility that no longer being part of the EU could make international travel more difficult.

'So it would be harder to go on holidays? Oh I love my holidays,' Hayley said.

Twitter has been taking the absolute piss out of the girls for their conversation, Hayley in particular, so I doubt they'll be living that viral clip down any time soon.

The latest season of Love Island may have only aired two episodes – but the nation is undoubtedly hooked.

Among the thousands of tweets about pen sales, veneers and gold digging, there is mention of self image issues, weight anxiety and comparison syndrome, as people hold themselves up the body standards set by the show's contestants.

Taking to Instagram, Chartered Psychologist and NHS Mental Health Trust Governor Kimberly Wilson gave her two cents on the damage these comparisons can do:

'I'm not here to talk about how the show has turned love in to a popularity contest (what isn't nowadays?). Nope. I just wanna give you guys the heads up on what is being dubbed the 'Love Island Effect,' she wrote.

'Though not an official term the Love Island Effect is being used to describe the impact of viewing images of 'perfect' bodies on individual self-esteem.'

'Research indicates that scrolling through hundreds of social media body images increases body dissatisfaction and watching hours of image-focused reality TV may do the same.'

'A 2010 Spanish study found that males and females with disordered eating had consumed more body imaged-focused media (TV and magazines). A more recent Italian study found that extensive watching of reality TV correlated with eating-disordered behaviour.'

'In the UK the Image & Performance Enhancing Drug survey looks at patterns of steroid use. In 2017 they reported an increase in steroid use and that most people use them to change their body image or for cosmetic/aesthetic purposes (rather than to enhance sporting performance), which researchers believe is linked to the popularity of shows like Love Island.'

'But it's not just researchers. Contestants themselves talk about the pressure to look good. Former contestant Simon Searles said of the boys, 'They'd be working out like crazy during the day trying to stay in shape. They wouldn’t eat anything.'

'So just a reminder that a) the show is cast for a specific look that b) even the cast members struggle to maintain. Enjoy the show but please watch responsibly,' she finished.

A SHEmazing reader poll found that 82% of viewers would like to see more body diversity on the show.

Love Island returned to our screens last night, and while Twitter was awash with jokes about pens, medical careers and veneers, another corner of the Love Island hashtag was talking body diversity.

A few viewers pointed out that for yet another season, ITV had failed to cast any islanders with realistic or diverse body shapes.

Dubbed 'unattainable Instagram models' the cast consists of petite female contestants and ripped, six-pack laden male entrants.

Geordie Shore star Holly Hagan, who has admitted to her own use of plastic surgery, was one of the first to call out the lack of diversity.

'I wonder if there will ever be anyone remotely curvy in Love Island' she wrote on Twitter.

The discussion exploded, with many viewers agreeing with Holly about the lack of representation for various figures, ethnicities and abilities.

However, not everyone agreed with Love Island bringing on 'average' contestants.

'Seeing people on here slate love island for not getting curvy or imperfect people on there n I totally disagree, there's plenty of similar shows out there for normal people but this one is for sexy people and that's its thing,' one man tweeted.

'Everybody is ok slagging the girls in the love island villa, saying they’re ‘too skinny’ and ‘need to eat a burger’ and we ‘need some curves in there’ but if there was one slightly curvy girl and someone made one comment everyone would go mad lol works both ways man,' said another.

Love Island fans could soon be treated to two instalments of the series per year after the show's bosses confirmed they are looking into the possibility of creator an LGBTQ+ version.

The news comes after the reality show scooped the award for Best Reality and Constructed Factual at last night's BAFTA ceremony.

Speaking at a press conference after the win, producers Richard Cowels and Sarah Tyekiff said they were open to the idea of creating a separate LGBTQ+ series.

"We've had bisexual people in the show – for a dating show, you need everyone to fancy everyone, so if you have gay and heterosexual in the same place, they're not going to fancy each other," Cowels said.

"We'd have to dedicated show… Absolutely we'd consider two series a year."

When asked if fans can expects any twists in upcoming series, he replied: "We've always got things up our sleeves, but the show is written as it goes along.

"So everyone is reacting to what's happening on and then the format is being written as it happens… Whatever we have planned, (they) get ripped up pretty much every hour as the cast goes in.

"Everything we predicted hasn't happened and whatever is happening is more exciting than we predicted. We just go for it."

Love Island is set to return next month for a total of eight weeks, making it the longest series to date.

Love Island was one of the most-watched shows of 2017.

You simply couldn't move on Twitter without seeing some reference to the holiday romance TV phenomenon.

In case you missed out, the premise of the show sees a number of singleons pairing off to take home the Love Island crown and a cool  £50,000 prize money.

While many people delighted in the various adventures and dramas of the show participants, others felt that it could do with a little more diversity.

ITV2 faced criticism for not having gay or lesbian couples on the show, after previously saying that it could not work due to the show 'format.'

'The format doesn’t really allow it,' ITV's Head of Digital Channels Paul Mortimer said in a previous statement.

'If you’re familiar with the programme, it’s about coupling and recoupling.'

'To complicate it with same-sex relationships is to take something away from the format.'

However, a source told The Star that an LGBTQ version of the show could be in the works.

'Love Island is supposed to be a reflection of pop culture and shows modern dating,' said the source.

'Young people are becoming more and more fluid in their sexuality and gender identity, so the channel have realised they can't alienate that audience, either.'

We may just have to wait and see what the new series of the show brings us.

Love Island completely took over our TV screens and dominated the headlines this season, as the country became obsessed with the unfolding love stories of a bunch of glamorous singles.

We actually joked at the time that an Irish version was well needed, with awkward Irish singles taking over a house on the Aran Islands and trying their luck at getting the shift, and now, it's actually happening.

Unfortunately, we wont be able to follow the unfolding drama, but if the Love Island format of finding the one tickles your fancy, then check this out.

It might not be quite as glam, but Inis Oirr is playing host to an event for Irish-speaking singles.

Irish language group Feicim is hoping to play cupid for those with a penchant for our native tongue.

'Have you finished watching Love Island and are you looking for your Kem or Amber?' reads the event description.

'Are you seeking love with some craic on the side? Or would you simply like to make new friends?'

'If you are a single with a grá for Gaeilge and the craic, Sorcas an Ghrá on Inis Oírr is a weekend you won’t want to miss.'

'Come join us and fall in love with the Island, with the Gaeltacht and maybe even with each other!'

The event is running from September 15 until September 17. We wouldn't pack too many bikinis, but you might find the love of your life.

You can sign up for the event here

His hilarious commentary helped to make Love Island one of the most talked about shows this summer, however, fans are now lamenting the fact that the voiceover man, Ian Stirling, wasn't given his own spot in the villa.

Following his appearance on Love Island: Aftersun's reunion special on Sunday night, Twitter erupted with fans eager to show their appreciation for the 29-year-old's dashing good looks.

And of course, the comments didn't go unnoticed.

Ian jokingly tweeted to confirm that he was in fact, not a 40-year-old a divorced father of three  – even if his voice might sound that way.

But, bad news ladies – Ian's officially off the market.

The Sun recently revealed that the voiceover star is actually dating Irish TV presenter, Laura Whitmore.

The newspaper said: "They kept the relationship private to give it the best possible chance, but it's well known in their close circle of friends how happy they are."

"They are very much in love and are boyfriend and girlfriend."

All jokes aside, we've got to admit, these guys make a cute couple.

If you fall into that second category, you may have even fantasied about making it onto the island yourself.
