The gender pay gap is an issue that, by now, should be in the past, but it's still a reality for many Irish women.

A submission from the Irish Women's Council of Ireland found that on average, childless women earn 17 per cent less than men, while working mothers earn 14 per cent less than their male counterparts.

Now, the Government is to host a meeting on the gender pay gap in Dublin.

The symposium is set to happen on Wednesday next week.

According to RTE, the meeting will see senior policymakers, business representatives, trades unions and academics come together to debate the issue.

In the National Strategy for Women and Girls 2017-2020, the Government made a commitment to report the results of to intends to publish the results of such surveys, to get a clear picture of the wage gap landscape in this country.

'A series of measures are proposed to address the gender pay gap,' reads the National Strategy for Women and Girls.

'These will include the introduction of wage surveys to be undertaken by companies with more than 50 employees and the development of practical tools to enable companies to calculate and to address the gender pay gap'

Kelly Brook is facing criticism for comments made on yesterday's Loose Women.

The model suggested that women who are 'silly drunk' place themselves in danger of being attacked by taxi drivers and members of the public.

Her statements have been accused of victim blaming.

'If you're drunk, if you've had a few drinks, you're so vulnerable, your guard is down, you just want to get home, and I think lots of young girls put themselves in that situation, and I just think if you are in that situation, just call somebody,' she said.

'Don't get in a cab, don't get on a train – you could get attacked on a train, walking home.'

When asked if Kelly herself would get a taxi home after a night out (as her brother is studying to be a taxi driver), Brook replied: 'Well, I wouldn't go out and get silly drunk.'

'You're in a very vulnerable state, it's late at night, you've had a few drinks, you are just a target for anyone who is going to do that,' she continued, according to The Sun.

'Whether it is a taxi driver – I'm not just blaming taxi drivers – it can be someone else on a night out, you are just vulnerable.'

'You've had a drink, it's late at night, you are a young woman, call someone you can trust and can give you advice on how to get home, I think that's the best thing to do.'

Her comments were met with backlash from viewers.

'As a rape victim your comments on #LooseWomen were appalling.'

'You seemed to blame the victims. Hope it never happens to you!' said one viewer.

Plans have been set in motion to begin work on Donald Trump's most infamous campaign promise.

The Trump administration is seeking almost 18 billion dollars from Congress to complete a border wall between the US and Mexico.

The funds would be distributed over a period of 10 years.

Plans have been made for 316 miles of new barriers and to upgrade an reinforce 407 miles of already existing barriers, according to The Guardian.

Donald Trump told supporters at a ally during his campaign period that he would be using the border to keep out Mexican illegal immigrants.

'They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists,' the US President said at the time.

He also said the Mexican government would be paying for the wall.

'I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will have Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words,' he said previously.

Mexico has continually refused to pay for Trump's wall.

We're a nation of bookworms, so it's no surprise the Irish public wasted no time having their say in an online poll held by Eason, Ireland’s leading retailer of books.

After asking the public to choose their favourite book of 2017, the results are now in, and we can reveal that Blindboy Boatclub’s The Gospel According to Blindboy was the winner!

Blindboy Boatclub, one half of Limerick comedy duo the Rubberbandits, debuted his collection of surreal and genre-defying short stories last year which explore the myths, complacencies and contradictions at the heart of modern Ireland, and it's fair to say readers were more than impressed.

Voted number one by over 4,000 Eason customers, Blindboy was closely followed by The Pursuit of Perfection by Donal McAnallen while OMG What a Complete Aisling by Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen came in third.

Eason is a proud supporter of Irish talent and there is always a huge appetite among readers for Irish writing. 2017 proved just that with Irish authors securing 7 out of 10 spots in the online poll:

Take a look at these:

1. The Gospel According to Blindboy by Blindboy Boatclub

2. The Pursuit of Perfection by Donal McAnallen

3. OMG What a Complete Aisling by Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen

4. Force for Justice: The Maurice McCabe Story by Michael Clifford

5. This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay

6. Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

7. The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena

8. The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne

9. The Choice by Philly McMahon

"We’ve been so fortunate to be kept entertained throughout the year with brilliant new books from both home-grown and international writers."

"The Top 10 Favourite Reads are a diverse and eclectic range of books, and the fact that seven of them have been written by Irish authors is testament to the diverse range of literary talent we have here in Ireland.”

For as long as Khloé Kardashian has been in the spotlight, she has had to defend herself against criticism relating to her appearance.

Taller, broader and paler than older sisters, Kourtney and Kim, Khloé was unfairly considered the ugly duckling of the trio.

In recent years, Khloé began overhauling her lifestyle and devoted herself to a heath and fitness regime which resulted in huge weight loss –  a move many attributed to her separation from Lamar Odom.

However, recent remarks have shed light on Khloe's physical transformation, and it seems it had less to do with her break-up and more to do with her brand.

While filming Revenge Body, the 33-year-old told contestants that pressure from within her world-famous family led to the transformation.

Recalling the remark that set the mission in motion, Khloé remembers being told: "Khloé, you got to lose weight cause you’re really hurting the brand."

While relatively pragmatic given her exposure to the entertainment industry, Khloé acknowledges the importance placed on appearance, but could not sidestep the upset it caused at the time.

"I understand that was coming from my management side of my family, but it does hurt," she admitted.

“I’m a huge believer of it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it." she added.

We're with her on that.

According to emerging reports, a 21-year-old male has been detained by Gardaí in Athlone after threatening members of the force with two knives.

Upon encountering the individual, Gardaí present at the scene were threatened with knives, forcing them to withdraw on safety grounds.

The Irish Examiner reports that the male went on to assault an individual in the estate, who escaped without serious injury.

The assailant then exited the housing estate at speed in the car.

Following a chase on the M6, Gardaí managed to subdue the assailant before making an arrest and detaining him at Athlone Garda Station.

The BBC have made the decision to cut Ed Westwick from their Agatha Christie drama, Ordeal by Innocence, following allegations of rape which were levelled against the British actor late last year.

It has been established that Westwick's scenes in the show will be re-shot, with Christian Cooke replacing the former Gossip Girl actor.

Thank you @VanityFair for the piece on #OrdealByInnocence

A post shared by Ed Westwick (@edwestwick) on

In November 2017, the 30-year-old actor was accused of rape by three women in three separate incidents in 2014 – allegations which Westwick has categorically denied.

Considering the gravity of the allegations, the BBC chose to postpone the programme's intended slot over the Christmas period, and have yet to announce the new transmission date.

"These are serious allegations which Ed Westwick has strenuously denied. The BBC is not making any judgement but until these matters are resolved, we will not include Ordeal by Innocence in the schedules."

While the initial statement made no mention of cutting Westwick from the programme, the role of Mickey Argyll will now be played by Yorkshire-born Christian.

Dua Lipa has taken to Twitter following backlash over her use of the n-word in a cover she performed of Mila J’s Smoke, Drink, Break-Up in 2014.

While the British singer sought to muffle the word, the star admitted she should never have used it in the first place.

In a message which was posted to Twitter shortly after midnight, the singer insisted that she hadn't given the potential repercussions enough consideration before using the word.

"In relation to my 2014 cover I never meant to offend or upset anyone," she began in the post which has been liked more than 29,000 times so far.

"I didnt say the full word but I can admit I shouldn't have gone there at all and that a different word could’ve been recorded altogether to avoid offence and confusion.I wasn’t thinking it through at the time," she wrote.

The singer's message was met with a mixed response from social media users, with some insisting Dua should move on following her apology while others demanded she take more responsibility.

"19 is a pretty young age and she apologized, something that real racist ppl will never do," wrote one while another countered: "Seemingly all you need to do to earn respect is to do racist things and then apologise."

Many fans and followers argued that the public were keen to drag past mistakes into the present, with many advising Dua to move on following her apology.

"This has happened so many years ago and you shouldn't penalise yourself for it now just because some people want to make you look problematic which we all know that you are not and we all do know that you would never mean to say anything offensive like on purpose," wrote one Twitter user.

The Kardashian family have been part of our pop cultural landscape for more than a decade.

Love them or loathe them, you cannot deny the impact they have had on various industries; from entertainment and tech to cosmetic and fashion, since the launch of Keeping Up With the Kardashians in 2007.

However, it seems an interest in the Kardashian phenomenon wasn't considered high-brow enough for many Celebrity Mastermind viewers this week who slammed Vogue Williams' choice of specialist subject.

Taking to the hot seat in the charity version of the iconic quiz show, Vogue, who has a degree in Construction design and management and quantitative surveying, had her knowledge of Kim Kardashian put to the test, and viewers were far from impressed.

Taking to Twitter, members of the public questioned both the topic and Vogue's poor performance in the General Knowledge segment of the show in a thread which makes for pretty awkward reading.

We mean, take a look at this…

If the January Blues have well and truly set in, then there's no doubt that thoughts of sunnier climes have crept into your mind at least once over the past five days.

But considering the financial car crash that is most of our bank accounts right now, a holiday seems like little more than a pipe dream, right?

Keen to remedy this, the good folk at Aer Lingus have decided to give the public a chance to get their hands on free flights by setting up special Sun Dials at three locations across the capital city.

So, how does it work exactly?

The Sun Dial will ring at their spots on Grand Canal Dock, O’Connell Street and South King Street, and the first person to answer the call will be in with a chance with winning flights to Europe or North America.

But how exactly?

Well, the Aer Lingus Whisperer on the other end of the phone will provide the potential winner with three clues about a particular destination, and if guessed correctly, that person could well be packing their bags… and bringing a plus one!

But if you're not a Sun Dial winner, that doesn't mean a holiday abroad is out of your grasp!

The Aer Lingus January Seat Sale is live now with 3 million seats on sale including up to 50 per cent off European travel and flights to North America from just €209 each way. Sale fares are valid for travel from 01 April to 30 September 2018 and include taxes and charges.

Beach babes can dip their toes in the sand at popular European seaside destinations including Malaga, Alicante, Faro and Nice, while city slickers can soak up the atmosphere in Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Milan, among many others.

Those interested in transatlantic travel can choose from New York, Newark, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando, Hartford, Boston, Washington, Chicago and Toronto, as well as recently added cities – Philadelphia, from March 2018, and Seattle, from May 2018.

 Sounds good to us!
