As the counts continue to climb in favour of a Yes vote in Ireland's historic referendum to repeal the 8th amendment to the constitution, the No campaign are having their say.

In a statement on their website, the Save The 8th campaign thanked their canvassers and no voters for their campaigning throughout the divisive referendum.

Using emotive language, the Save the 8th side called today's outcome a 'tragedy,' and maintained that they will continue to oppose abortion rights in Ireland.

'What Irish voters did yesterday is a tragedy of historic proportions. However, a wrong does not become right simply because a majority support it,' the statement reads.

'We are so proud of all of those who stood with us in this campaign – our supporters, our donors, our families, and our loved ones. This campaign took a huge personal toll on all of us who were involved, and we have been so grateful for their support.'

'The unborn child no longer has a right to life recognised by the Irish state. Shortly, legislation will be introduced that will allow babies to be killed in our country.'

A post shared by #savethe8th (@savethe8th) on

'We will oppose that legislation. If and when abortion clinics are opened in Ireland, because of the inability of the Government to keep their promise about a GP led service, we will oppose that as well. Every time an unborn child has his or her life ended in Ireland, we will oppose that, and make our voices known.'

'Abortion was wrong yesterday. It remains wrong today. The constitution has changed, but the facts have not.'

Exit polls predict a 70/30 outcome in favour of repealing the 8th amendment today.

The first season of Netflix's original series, 13 Reasons Why was released last year.

The show caused no end of controversy, but with success of season one, it became the most talked about show of 2017, and it was inevitable that a second season would follow.

The show tackles issues like sexual assault, suicide, self-harm, gender discrimination, mental health and substance abuse, was criticised by many last year for the manner in which it dealt with such sensitive topics, but it opened up an avenue for teenagers, parents and educators to openly discuss some serious real-life issues.

This time we see Hannah’s life filtered through the eyes of other people. Viewers, parents and mental health charities previously called out the show for Hannah Baker's suicide scene and dangerous lack of trigger warnings.

Season two began with a mature content disclaimer which saw the show's lead stars tell the audience the season ahead will tackle “tough, real-world issues,” even going so far as to encourage younger viewers to watch with an adult.

It warns some viewers that it “may not be right” for them if they struggle with any of the issues the series is about. This represents Netflix’s attempt to frame the series in a more responsible manner along with the crisis-resource-driven website 13reasonswhy.info, which is mentioned at the end of each episode.

“We’re committed on this show to telling truthful stories about things that young people go through in as unflinching a way as we can,” creator Brian Yorkey said. “We fully understand that that means some of the scenes in the show will be difficult to watch. I think Netflix has helped provide viewers with lots of resources for understanding that this may not be the show for everybody, and also resources for people who do watch it and are troubled and need help.”

This season follows the individual struggles of numerous characters, including Clay, who is still pining for Hannah; Jessica, who is trying to feel normal whilst dealing with the after-effects of being raped; Alex, still recovering emotionally and physically from his own suicide attempt; Justin, Jessica’s ex- boyfriend and a former love interest of Hannah’s who’s homeless and a heroin addict; and Olivia Baker, who continues to mourn whilst trying to focus on getting justice for her daughter.

Clay and Justin helped each other in their recovery process. They both needed each other but they didn’t know that. Clay was angry, traumatised and unable to move on. Clay always had a wall up, he didn’t open up but he did to Justin, their bromance offered light to a dark situation.

We see Justin blotting out his pain and covering his feelings by using drugs. The Netflix series never glamorised his drug abuse, they made it look repulsive. Justin should’ve seeked professional help as an addict in the series. But recovery doesn’t follow a straight line.

A post shared by 13 Reasons Why (@13reasonswhy) on

Jessica and Alex also leaned heavily on each other. Jessica was uncomfortable in her own skin as a victim of sexual assault and Alex had to deal with the aftermath of his suicide attempt. It’s important to have a strong support system and they displayed that.

Jessica was fearful during the series. She regained power by courageously naming Bryce Walker as her rapist. People in society tend to doubt sexual assault, they may think that the victim is a liar, over exaggerating or a slut.

The victim’s sexual history doesn’t matter. It doesn’t make what happened less violent or less traumatising. Viewers were upset that Bryce only received a three month probation as punishment, and they should be, but this is happening everyday.

A post shared by 13 Reasons Why (@13reasonswhy) on

Parental support is crucial to a sexual assault victims recovery. Although, they shouldn’t assume they know exactly what the victim is going through and they have to be patient and let them know they’re there for them.

Language is the key when gaining consent, it’s important you have permission and know for sure that the person you are with is agreeing to it. Teenagers spend 10.3 hours on the internet per day and some of them will hide secrets to keep up their social media image, whether it be that they were raped or feel depressed.

They will feel pressured to keep a positive image of themselves.

A post shared by 13 Reasons Why (@13reasonswhy) on

Hannah committed suicide and Alex attempted it, so their school decided to ban the students from talking about it. This is unhealthy and should’ve been talked about in the school by using plain language and by letting everyone know there are resources available; there are safe and trustworthy people to talk to such as trustworthy friends or family members, guidance counsellors or helplines.

Hannah’s death rocked her fictional community. Teenagers might not tell their parents everything. Parents need to say that they’re open to listening.

They need to understand and they shouldn’t get angry. They should be more about listening than talking. They should find out the answers to their child’s problem along with the child. Not all guidance counsellors have all the training to save someone’s life.

The series has been getting many complaints about a vile male on male sexual assault scene portrayed in the final episode.

"But the fact is that, as intense as that scene is, and as strong as are or reactions to it may be, it doesn’t even come close to the pain experienced by the people who actually go through these things. When we talk about something being “disgusting” or hard to watch, often that means we are attaching shame to the experience. We would rather not be confronted with it,' says Yorkey.

'We would rather it stay out of our consciousness. This is why these kinds of assaults are under reported. This is why victims have a hard time seeking help. We believe that talking about it is so much better than silence.”

A post shared by 13 Reasons Why (@13reasonswhy) on

"There's a statistic that one in six men have been sexually assaulted," explained psychiatric consultant Dr. Hedrick.

"I think it's much harder for male victims because, it's a lot more difficult for boys and men to talk about being the victim because they have the same shame and guilt and fear that women and girls have but it also brings into question their own sense of masculinity and manhood."

Male on male sexual assault is under reported due to the pain and shame of talking about it and season 2 is a conversation opener. Gun violence effects most communities in the US. It has been happening increasingly over the past 25 years. As we see in the season 2, the hurt within a person caused involvement with guns.

It’s not an excuse, we need to look out for people who are hurting and help them express it in ways that are not damaging. We get to understand why someone would do something so unthinkable.

Not portraying this matter doesn't make it go away and not talking about it doesnt mean its not happening in society. It means we’re not talking about it.

It was an uncomfortable season to watch, but it was honest, these things are happening in the world and should not be taboo topics.

Hopefully it helps towards progress.

Season Two of 13 Reasons Why is now streaming on Netflix.

This morning, Ireland has lifted it's head from it's pillow on a historic day for the country.

Last night, RTE's exit poll predicted a 69.4 Yes to 30.6 No landslide win for repealing the 8th.

The Irish Times exit poll came back with a similar result, reporting a victory for the Yes side in the referendum of 68% to 32%.

However, if Brexit is anything to go by, exit polls are not a guarantor of a win – bit in the first hours of vote counting, the results are reflecting the estimates.

One of the first ballot boxes tallied in county Wicklow came back with a whopping 78% vote in favour of Yes.

The polling station in question was Ashford National School.

Another box from Simon Harris's home town came back with one of the highest results counted so far.

Greystones, Wicklow had an 82% Yes vote.

In the Sligo town region, around one third of ballot boxes are open, and are showing a 63.7% yes to 35.9% no ratio in favour of repealing the Eighth Amendment, according to Shannonside FM.

The voting ratios are sure to vary from place to place, but all signs are pointing to a win for repealing the 8th.

What is true love?

When we're growing up it's all princesses and fairytales and happily ever afters. But as we get older we gradually start to realises that life isn't  exactly a Disney movie- as much as we'd like it to be.

It's hard work, it's compromise, it's massive fights spurred by the fact that they forgot to take the bins out- again.

But mostly, it's the little moments. With massive bouquets and surprise holidays splashed all over Instagram, it can be easy to forget that love is in the little things.

This video is a testaments to that. 19-year-old Raigan Kelley was working as an apprentice hairdresser in Texas when an elderly couple, Andrew and Theresa,  came into the salon.

Theresa had suffered a stroke 18 years ago, and was no longer able to style her hair herself. So her husband had come into the salon to learn how to do it for her.

“Proof that true love really exists,” Raigen captioned the sweet clip. “She can no longer style her hair herself and her husband insisted on learning how to do it for her step by step.”

We're gonna need some tissues.

Speaking to Babble, their son Steve said that his parents relationship had always been a special one.

“My dad has always worked his tail off,” he said. “He’s never expected or asked for anything. He travelled all the time as a salesman for an electrical company and gave everything he had to his family.

“Ever since my mom’s stroke, she’s always wanted him by her side.”

So for mother's day, the three children chipped in to get Theresa a voucher for The Foundry Hair Salon, her favourite. As delighted as she was with her new do, everyone knows that it only takes one wash for that fresh salon bounce to fade.

Sensing that his made Theresa upset, Andrew returned to the salon to enquire about the products they used. But realising what it was for, the hairdressers offered to give him a styling lesson instead.

“From products, to the way you hold the brush and dryer … truly one of the best things I have been able to witness in my life,” wrote Reigan. “Brought tears to my eyes … What an amazing man and what a lucky woman.”

The video has since gone viral, touching hearts everywhere with over two million views.

When Steve told his father about the videos success, he refused to take any credit.

“My dad said, ‘Don’t make this about us. It’s not about us — it’s about the Foundry folks helping us out,'” he explained.

Now THAT is true love.

There are few things as frustrating as getting ready to go out and looking in the mirror only to find red, irritated skin that we could've sworn wasn't there a moment ago.

Well, former child actress and all-around fabulous person Drew Barrymore has the perfect hack for such situations.

The mum-of-two recently took to Instagram, saying that she had a 'giant bite or reaction on my face, right in the centre of my “try not stare” cheek'.

The director decided to take matters into her own hands, placing a chunk of aloe vera on her cheek. Aloe vera's long been known for its soothing properties, especially for sunburns.

"Then figuring I had nothing to lose, I dug out the meat of the live plant stalk, which I cut off a plant in my yard and then kept in the refrigerator to reuse, the juice you can squeeze out simply did nothing," Drew explained.

A post shared by Drew Barrymore (@drewbarrymore) on

"So placed a small chunk of it right on my skin," she continued, "I left it on for about 3 hours plus maybe four."

The 50 First Dates actress then enjoyed herself in the sunshine ('with loads of sun block' she clarified).

"Just a gal doing experiments! And I noticed the piece of aloe vera meat turning red. It was actually suctioning out the red from my face," she revealed.

A post shared by Drew Barrymore (@drewbarrymore) on

Now, you may not want to scroll down if you're squeamish.

Gotham GIF

The 43-year-old shared a photo of the piece of aloe vera after she'd used it and it had transformed, to say the least. But so had her skin!

"Don’t get grossed out, because I know it is, but it turned into this when it came off my face," she captioned the photo, "And I am not kidding you, my red mark on my face was NOTICEABLY lighter. And I did it again the next day, with a much milder impact.

"But in two days it was gone. I had even tried bleaching creams, and nothing was getting the red spot off my face until this natural remedy. Aloe vera live plant meat worked to extract the red."

A post shared by Drew Barrymore (@drewbarrymore) on

That sounds pretty amazing! Drew was slightly incorrect, though, in saying that it had 'suctioned' the red off her skin.

"I wouldn't use the words 'suctioned out' to describe what happened to the irritation on her face," Dendy Engelman, a dermatologic surgeon at New York City's Medical Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery centre, explained to Allure.

"Aloe vera does tend to turn red and wrinkle under the sun or in dry conditions, which is what happened here."

However, its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties are renowned, Dendy notes. That may be why Drew's skin cleared up so well.

A post shared by Drew Barrymore (@drewbarrymore) on

It should also be kept in mind, Dendy said, that those who have sensitive skin may find that aloe vera leads to redness or irritation.

Suctioning aside, the actress took the opportunity to sing aloe vera's praises, listing its other possible uses.

"It’s also amazing for cuts, scrapes and especially burns. It’s a must have to have around. In any form. Thank you aloe vera. You continue to amaze me with your beauty and beauty secrets," Drew wrote.

Are you an aloe vera fanatic like Drew?

With 6,000 polling stations open all over the country from 7am this morning, the referendum to repeal or maintain the 8th amendment to the constitution  is in full swing.

Constituencies are reporting an exceptionally high voter turnout in the first hours of the polls being open.

3.3 million citizens are registered to vote in this referendum.

Dublin North Central has seen a 30% turnout by noon, according to The Irish Times.

Some areas of Sligo saw an almost 25% voter turnout by noon.

In Cork, 16.2% turned out at noon, compared to 13.3% at the same time for the General Election in 2016, 'which is unusual for a referendum,' according to Breaking News.

'Early indications are that turnout across the country is quite strong,' Orla O’Connor, Campaign Co-Director at Together For Yes said.

'However we know there are certain pockets where turnout is a bit slower, so we would encourage voters in these areas to talk to their friends, family members and work colleagues, and make sure they vote before the deadline of 10pm.'

Demi Lovato has been working for 18 of her 25 years, and she has been headlining arenas for the past five, and she will be playing the 3Arena tonight.

She began working on Barney & Friends, she starred in Camp Rock and her own Disney show Sonny With a Chance and she had record deals with Disney.

But in 2010 Demi was on tour for Camp Rock 2 with the Jonas Brothers. She left that tour early to seek treatment for cocaine use, bulimia, cutting, and bipolar disorder. She received intensive treatment in 2011 and in 2012 she entered a sober-living facility for more than a year.

Severing ties with Disney, she embarked on a major musical comeback, turning her dark times into number-one singles like “Skyscraper”; she also judged The X Factor USA, all the while speaking out about the mental health, eating disorders and drug abuse issues.

Demi recently released a documentary in October 2017 called Simply Complicated. It’s based on her recovery and her ongoing struggle.

Speaking about the project, the American star told Teen Vogue: "It was really hard to talk about on camera. But I knew that if I was honest, it would help somebody understand. Sometimes I'm not perfect with my recovery and my eating issues, but I keep fighting. And I want people to see that."

She only takes Sundays off when it comes to working out. She regularly shows off her hard work at the gym and happily poses in her gym kit on Instagram.

“I work out personally because of the way it makes me feel and the release of serotonin. It’s important to take care of yourself physically but also mentally as well," Demi told Self magazine.

"If you struggle with depression, anxiety, or any other type of stressors in your life, a really great way to get rid of those is through physical exercise and fitness." As for those days when she doesn't feel like working out because she's tired or busy, she admitted: "What motivates me on those days is knowing how I’m going to feel after I’m done."

Demi has also taken her love for fitness to the next level by joining forces with Kate Hudson's brand Fabletics, and she recently brought out her second line for the athletic fashion label.Kate Hudson said that Demi “embodies so many elements of the brand – including female empowerment and body positivity.”

Demi has been open about her own struggles with depression, eating disorders and substance abuse, and now co-owns CAST centres, which treat addiction and mental health.

"I've actually met people that go to CAST because they realised they needed to get sober or they needed to better themselves in some other way, it's changed lives, and I want to be able to do that again," Demi explained.

"My whole life, you know, is about giving back, and I think it's really important that I continue to do this while I'm on tour."

The Tell Me You Love Me Tour is Lovato's sixth headlining tour, promoting her sixth studio album, Tell Me You Love me (2017).

The tour began on February 26, 2018, in San Diego, and is scheduled to conclude on November 27, 2018, in Fortaleza. The European leg of the tour started in Belfast last night before moving to Dublin for Friday night. The supporting acts are yet to be announced.

The Royal Wedding was hands down one of the biggest events this year.

The guests adorned outfits we can only dream of affording and rubbed shoulders with some of the most famous faces.

Getting a seat to one one of the most exclusive weddings and an invite to the reception was a challenge, even for the rich and famous.

We were glued to our screens, watching with baited breath for the bride to arrive, clocking the nervous smirks of the groom and analysing the guestlist.

A post shared by Victoria Beckham (@victoriabeckham) on

Overall, it seemed like a very successful day for the happy couple.

However, for some, the aftermath of the day seemed fraught with criticism.

The Internet was intent on demanding an explanation for why Victoria Beckham wasn't smiling at the wedding.

Clapping back on an Instagram post today, the fashion designer said she was simply smiling inside.

A post shared by Victoria Beckham (@victoriabeckham) on

The pop singer captioned the photo:

"When you’re smiling on the inside. As the sweatshirt says!! Let your sweatshirt do the talking – get yours now exclusively at my website and #VBDoverSt x VB #DarkButHappyPlace."

We LOVE the shade.

It does, however, raise the question of why in 2018 we are still hung up over women not smiling?

Generally, men escape this annoying and frustrating commentary on being told to smile or to smile more.

A post shared by Hillary Clinton (@hillaryclinton) on

That was apparent during the general election between Hillary and Trump, that the world will just never forget.

After a victory, Hillary was tweeted by Joe Scarborough to smile after her big win.

Trump (unsurprisingly), never got the same treatment.

Mr Scarborough's sickeningly condescending tweet subjects women to be defined, once again, by their physical appearance.

Hillary Clinton is an extremely successful, powerful and educated woman, who was running for president.

She does not need to be told how to react.

"Let’s make history!" —Hillary

A post shared by Hillary Clinton (@hillaryclinton) on

Women need to be held at the same statue as their male counterparts.

Females who don't smile are perceived as sad, ungrateful and unattractive.

Taking the royal wedding as an example, the fashion Queen is expected to smile because of her HUSBAND.

Women who don't crack the pearly whites are frequently subjected to insults and interrogation; it is generally believed they must be deeply miserable.

Another user said since Beckham wasn't smiling, she must be attending a funeral.

The double standards that exist between the sexes are ripe and repulsive.

Men are never branded unhappy, miserable or told they should appear happy because of their wife or partner.

Men often are given the label of being powerful and authoritarian when they don't crack a smile.

Science even indicates that if you want to seem powerful, don't smile.

The study also found that smiling can result in lower status when referring to personal dominance and social prestige.

It may not come as a surprise then, that women are constantly told to smile.

A post shared by Victoria Beckham (@victoriabeckham) on

In an era when we are fighting for equality across the board, movements like #TimesUp and #MeToo are growing in strength. So, telling women to smile, needs to be left in the past.

Stop trying to disempower women; leave your intimidation at the door.

A woman's worth is not defined by her physical appearance and whether she smiles or not, is none of your business.

Victoria Beckham's onslaught of criticism is yet another timely reminder that we should all be making a much bigger effort to embrace assertive, strong women and treat females with respect – regardless of whether they smile or not.

If you find yourself ordering cheeseburgers more than salads, well, maybe you're just going to restaurants where the volume's been turned up a bit too high.

That's what a new study published in the  Journal of the Academy of Marketing Sciences suggests.

It's no surprise that the volume of music affects how we feel, as it has a direct impact on both heart rate and arousal. This research found that the volume of ambient music even affects our decision on whether we eat healthy or unhealthy food.

"Restaurants and supermarkets can use ambient music strategically to influence consumer buying behaviour," Dipayan Biswas, PhD, a marketing professor at the University of South Florida Muma College of Business, told Science Daily.

The research was carried out at a cafe in Stockholm, Sweden over several hours and multiple days. The cafe played a loop of ambient music from different genres at either 55 decibels (Db) or 70Db .

The foodstuffs sold at the cafe were categorised as healthy, non-healthy, or neutral (with the last group reserved for items like tea or coffee).

Researchers found that 20 percent more customers bought unhealthy food when they heard louder ambient music while dining compared to those who ordered while exposed to quieter music.

Below is a table with the percentage of healthy, unhealthy, and neutral items sold during each period:

55Db (295 items sold) 70Db (254 items sold)
Healthy – 32 percent Healthy – 25 percent
Non-healthy – 42 percent Non-healthy – 52 percent
Neutral – 26 percent Neutral – 23 percent

So next time we're watching what we're eating, we'll ask the manager to turn down the volume!

Are you surprised by the study's findings?
