Yearly Archives: 2017

No matter how often we hear of the benefits of a healthy eating plan, there are few among us who don’t, on some level, associate the lifestyle choice with restriction, boredom and deprivation.

Even the most dedicated health and fitness bunny will admit that despite oodles of self-discipline and tonnes of willpower, there comes a point when they teeter perilously close to the edge of the wagon, before regaining their momentum.

And with that narrative at the forefront of our minds, it’s no surprise that our perception of healthy eating is somewhat skewed, and often conjures images of self-induced deprivation.

However, realising it doesn’t have to be this way is the first step on the road to a healthier lifestyle, while schooling yourself on the food ranges which cater to your needs is all the ammo you need to feel great!

Here are just seven reasons why healthy eating doesn’t have to be boring…

1. Discover new foods

If there’s one thing we love in life, it’s discovering new foods. And a healthy eating regime is a prime opportunity to just do that.

Weaning yourself away from your standard grocery list, and introducing new and exciting flavours is all part of the process, and it ensures you won’t feel deprived in any way as you get used to your new lifestyle choice.

Believe us, there will come a point when you’ll find yourself stunned that you lived without certain ingredients for so long.

2. Create new recipes

In addition to introducing yourself to new ingredients, you’ll find yourself encouraged to create new recipes, and that is a guaranteed way to stave off boredom.

Knowing that you can create super-healthy dishes which you will genuinely find tasty means it’s unlikely you’ll fall off the wagon any time soon.

Remember, hearty meals are just as easy to create with healthy ingredients, so there is no need to assume dinner-time will take a hit.

3. School yourself

So many of your favourite brands cater to your needs, and it’s just a case of schooling yourself on which ones!

Why not tuck into guilt-free treats like Activia’s No Added Sugar range which has just hit the shelves?

It’s perfect for budding health-focussed foodies as It contains the same great Activia taste you know and love, but now it’s even better for you… and your new goals!

4. Eat little and often

Healthy eating has not, and never will be, synonymous with deprivation, so the sooner we all internalise that, the better!

Snacking is a major part of ensuring your metabolism stays ticking over, and if you’re going to be doing it as often as you should, it’s vital you get creative with your choice!

Colourful snacks are appealing to the eye, so mix fresh berries with yogurt or snack on nuts if you’re on the go.

5. Maintain a balance

A surefire way to get bored of your healthier lifestyle is to tell yourself that certain things are totally off-limits.

Our grandmothers were right when they said ‘everything in moderation’, and it’s important you adhere to this rule when it comes to your own plan.

There’s nothing you cannot have as long as you have it in moderation as part of a balanced diet.

6. Get Insta-happy

Why not document your new journey with the help of your Instagram account?

Photographing the meals you create and the snacks you opt for will ensure you stay enthusiastic about your new choices.

And as the likes roll in and the new followers start engaging, you’ll be even more determined to stay on track!

7. Enlist the support of a pal

Everything is more fun when a friend is involved, right?

Why not choose the same ingredients as your mate and challenge each other to a cook-off?

The person who comes up with the most creative (and tastiest) dish wins.

Where's Samuel L Jackson when you need him?

Remember when Kate Thornton attempted to justify her reason for calling Colin Farrell 'British' due to Ireland's proximity to the UK, and Samuel L Jackson wasted no time calling her out on it?

Well, for those of you who don't quite recall, the Hollywood A-lister, during a conversation with the British presenter, in recent years explained the problematic nature of her remark.

"You see that's your problem right there. You British keep claiming people that don't belong to you. We had that problem in America too — it was called slavery," he deadpanned.

However, it looks like Samuel's remarks may have fallen on deaf ears as we have yet another media outlet in the UK more than happy to claim one of our biggest and brightest as their own.

In the latest issue of the Mail on Sunday's You magazine, Ruth Negga was described as British despite being of Irish-Ethopian heritage.

Highlighting the work of LA stylist Karla Welch in a piece entitled Meet the SUPER STYLIST superstars – and the fashion icons they've created, Amy E Williams became yet another journalist who decided that an actor's Irish heritage was subject to change.

"This year, LA-based Karla was named Hollywood’s most powerful stylist, not least for catapulting British star Ruth Negga into the sartorial stratosphere," Amy wrote.

Having been born in Ethopia and raised in Limerick since the age of four, Ruth has often spoken of her Irish-Ethopian heritage, but it doesn't look like the memo reached Amy.

Survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire will join a number of high-profile music stars to record a charity single to raise money for those affected by the tragedy, which is thought to have killed at least 58 people.

It was previously announced that Robbie William, Craig David, Pixie Lott and Stormzy would take part in Simon Cowell's charity single.

According to The Sun, a choir consisting of over 300 local people feature on the track – a cover of the Simon and Garfunkel classic Bridge Over Troubled Water.

A source told metro.co.uk, “It was really moving. The local residents became really emotional. Some of them actually lived in Grenfell Tower. Their homes have been destroyed.”

“It’s very raw for a lot of them.”

Simon Cowell announced his plans to release the charity single last week, saying that the tragedy had struck a chord in him.

"I was watching the news and then I drove up to see the building which is around the corner. I’ve seen a lot of bad things and not far from where I was sitting."

"It dawned on you. It sent chills through you. What hit home was seeing that wall and seeing all those messages."

"I saw how residents turned up with water and clothes and that’s when I thought I’m not going to sit here and do nothing. For someone in my position to do nothing would be appalling."

All proceed from the single will go to the families affected by the incident.

The British government have also confirmed that VAT from the track will be refunded and donated to charity.

Reports have suggested that the song will be released on Wednesday June 21.

In theory, moving out of the family home is one of the most exciting times in a young person's life.

Until reality sets in and various aspects of household management which you may not have considered until owning or renting your first home or apartment suddenly presents themselves, that is.

From the emergence of mould and the importance of air purification to figuring out the fusebox and dealing with the landlord, there are numerous things we need to get our heads around once we eventually up sticks and set up on our own.

And here are just six, ladies.

1. The arrival of mould

For most of us, the emergence of mould in the family home was an issue swiftly dealt with by our parents and an army of professionals.

And so our first encounter with it in our home was a real eye-opener.

Can you wash it off? Is it making my clothes smell? Is that the reason for my cough? Should I move out?

2. The round-the clock milk check

Be honest and admit that you often left milk responsibilities to other members of the family.

And if not, there's a high chance your family made use of the services provided by the nation's fine milkmen which meant you rarely stood dumbstruck in front of an open fridge with dry cornflakes and black tea wondering where it all went wrong.

You forgot to buy milk, that's where.

3. The round-the-clock light check

As a teenager you were utterly unperturbed by your father's constant need to turn off every light in the house, because hey, the electricity bill had nothing to do with you.

And then you moved out.

And now you'd rather cook your dinner in the dark and shower by torch light than spend one extra cent on the electricity bill which is now your main responsibility.

4. Air pollution management

Moving into a new place brings about many issues which you wouldn't have considered before flying the nest, and one of them is the management of air pollution.

The average home can be up to five times more polluted than the air outside, and with your parents having tended to that in days gone by, you now find yourself educating yourself on the various ways to combat it.

Enter the Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Link which purifies the air alongside heating and cooling you as needed. Oh, and did we mention you can control your indoor air quality with the Dyson Link app?!

5. Dealing with housemates

Dealing with troublesome, prying and inconsiderate housemates was not something you ever properly considered, and even if you did, you assumed you could deal with them in the exact same manner you dealt with siblings; a dead arm and a Chinese Burn.

And then you moved out, and you realised that other people are really weird, and you are one of the few normal people left.

Flying the nest was meant to suggest freedom, liberation and long, lazy weekends… not frustration, irritation and hiding your food from greedy hands.

6. Dealing with landlords

Your parents were your landlords, and while it was – at times – difficult, you pretty much had them sussed.

And they had your cards marked too.

But this new elusive landlord is a whole different ball game, and hell knows how you're going to deal with their cryptic emails, sudden rent increases and refusal to provide you with a proper air purifier.

Katie Piper has revealed she is pregnant with her second child after having previously feared she would be unable to conceive again.

The former model and television presenter debuted her baby bump in a photoshoot for Hello magazine.

She also took to Instagram to share the news with her followers and pay tribute to her husband Richard Sutton with a sweet Father's Day message – “I'm so excited to tell you all next Father's Day my husband will be celebrating with two children!!”

Fans were quick to inundate the star with message of love and congratulations with one excited follower saying, “What wonderful news amongst all this uncertainty, you look blooming so happy for you+your growing family xxx”

Katie and Richard have been married for two years and are already parents to their three-year-old daughter, Belle Elizabeth.

The announcement is extra special for the couple as Katie previously told The Mirror that she feared she may not be able to conceive her second child naturally.

Speaking to the paper in 2015, she revealed: “I got pregnant with Belle really easily, but now I've got a problem with my oesophagus.”

“There aren't enough vitamins to help me make a baby. That is why I have become so skinny. I think adopting is the best option.”

Huge congratulations are in order for the happy couple.

Sun worshippers rejoice!

The glorious weather isn't going anywhere just yet.

Temperatures are expected to remain as high as 26 degrees in the first half of the week, making Ireland hotter than the Canaray Islands – bad news if you're off on your holliers.

All parts of the country will experience temperatures well above average for this time of year, however the best of the sunshine will be in Munster and Leinster.

Monday: A warm sunny day with top temperatures of 25 degrees.

Tuesday: Warm and humid with hazy sunshine and highs of 19 to 26 degrees. Isolated thunderstorms will develop in the south of the country towards evening and gradually spread northwards throughout the night.

Wednesday: Top temperatures of 20 to 26 degrees. However the heat and humidity will set off a number of heavy thundery showers during the day and these will continue to occur into the evening time.

Thursday: Temperatures are set to drop slightly with highs of 17 to 21 degrees in southwesterly breezes. Mostly dry with spells of sunshine and some cloudier periods.

Friday: Highs of 15 to 18 degrees.General increase in cloud with occasional patchy rain.

It looks like temperature are set to drop back to average over the weekend, although Saturday is expected to be a mainly dry day.

So, don't put the factor 50 anywhere just yet. You're gonna need it this week.

One man has died and at least eight people have been injured after a vehicle was driven into pedestrians close a mosque in north London.

The attack took place at 12:20am on Monday outside the Muslim Welfare House, close to Finsbury Park mosque.

The driver of the rented van, described as a large white man, was detained by members of the public following the incident.

One eyewitness described being surrounded by bodies, while another said the attacker shouted about killing muslims while he was held.

In a statement, The Metropolitan Police said: "One man was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are in the process of informing next of kin. A post mortem examination will be scheduled due course."

"Eight people injured were taken to three separate hospitals; two people were treated at the scene for minor injuries."

Some reports suggested that the man may have also been carrying a knife, however police officers have confirmed that none of the injured had suffered stab wounds.

"At this stage there are no reports of any persons having suffered any knife injuries.

"The driver of the van – a man aged 48 – was found detained by members of public at the scene and then arrested by police in connection with the incident.

"He has been taken to hospital as a precaution and will be taken into custody once discharged. He will also be subject of a mental health assessment in due course."

At the time of the attack, the area was busy with worshippers who had been attending Ramadan night prayers at the mosque.

Amongst them was Abdulrahman Saleh Alamoudi, who managed to detain the man before he had a chance to flee.

Speaking to Buzzfeed News, he said: "I think at least eight or 10 people got injured. Luckily I managed to escape. And then the guy came out of his van and I got him.

"He was screaming, he was saying, 'I'm going to kill all Muslims, I'm going to kill all Muslims'. He was throwing punches.

"Then we managed to get him on the floor. Then he was saying, 'Kill me, kill me'. I said, 'We are not going to kill you. Why did you do that?' He wouldn't say anything."

However, conflicting eyewitness reports say that the attacker did not speak at all.

This is not the first time Finsbury Park mosque has been targeted. An attempted arson in 2105 saw a white man try to light a jerrycan full of petrol and throw it over the railings before he fled the scene on a moped.

The Little Mermaid is one of our favourite movies, and Wonder Woman has definitely reached top of the list too.

But did you catch some very similar points made in both films?

Both movies feature kickass women who have to deal mystical challenges, but did you notice a sequence in the flicks that are basically exactly the same?

In The Little Mermaid, remember when Ariel finds Prince Eric on the beach? Well, it's basically the exact same as to when Diana finds Steve on the beach.

From the way Diana touches Steve's face, to the camera angles and the lighting, everything has an undeniable likeness.

And actually, it wasn't an accident. In an interview with Entertainment WeeklyWonder Woman’s screenwriter, Allan Heinberg, said: “The story as I see it is The Little Mermaid, specifically Disney’s incarnation.”

He added: “This is a woman who has been raised in a very protective, sheltered life, she’s curious about what life is like outside and she wants to have her own experience.

“She wants to be where the people are.”

Amy Huberman has written touching tribute to her dad on Father's Day. She took part in the Irish Times article called Father’s Day: My father before he was a dad.

Amy speaks about her father's early life and how he remembers being in London during air raids when he was just four-years-old.

The IFTA winner's dad says that he remembers his mother took him on a train, and he had to have a number around his neck.

Clutching onto her hand, he will "never forget the moment she had to leave him."

"She returned to bring him home when it was safer, saying whatever the uncertainty, at least they would all be together. The heartbreak of that overwhelms me."

Amy then goes on to talk about his later life and his career.

"After leaving school early and later going back and putting himself through college, he went on to become a successful fashion designer running his own company.

"I’ve always valued his tenacity, his conviction and commitment, his bravery, his decisiveness, his spirit of adventure and his belief in, at the very least, simply trying."

"I am lucky to know him. I am lucky to call him Dad," Amy added at the end.
