Survivors of the Grenfell Tower fire will join a number of high-profile music stars to record a charity single to raise money for those affected by the tragedy, which is thought to have killed at least 58 people.

It was previously announced that Robbie William, Craig David, Pixie Lott and Stormzy would take part in Simon Cowell's charity single.

According to The Sun, a choir consisting of over 300 local people feature on the track – a cover of the Simon and Garfunkel classic Bridge Over Troubled Water.

A source told metro.co.uk, “It was really moving. The local residents became really emotional. Some of them actually lived in Grenfell Tower. Their homes have been destroyed.”

“It’s very raw for a lot of them.”

Simon Cowell announced his plans to release the charity single last week, saying that the tragedy had struck a chord in him.

"I was watching the news and then I drove up to see the building which is around the corner. I’ve seen a lot of bad things and not far from where I was sitting."

"It dawned on you. It sent chills through you. What hit home was seeing that wall and seeing all those messages."

"I saw how residents turned up with water and clothes and that’s when I thought I’m not going to sit here and do nothing. For someone in my position to do nothing would be appalling."

All proceed from the single will go to the families affected by the incident.

The British government have also confirmed that VAT from the track will be refunded and donated to charity.

Reports have suggested that the song will be released on Wednesday June 21.

Update: London Fire commissioner reports "a number of fatalities" but can't say how many.

Earlier: 30 people have been admitted to five hospitals around London following a huge blaze which engulfed a block of flats in the west of the city last night.

Many eye-witnesses told how people residing on the upper floors of Grenfell Tower had been trapped in their homes.

The first call to London Fire Brigade came at 12:45am on Wednesday morning.

Around 200 firefighters and 40 engines were deployed to the scene as rescue workers tried to evacuate the 24-story building in North Kensington.

The fire burned from the second to the top floor, and the cause of the blaze is not yet known.

In the early hours of this morning, London Fire Brigade said around 30 flats near the scene had been evacuated and a cordon was in place.

London mayor Sadiq Khan has said the fire has been declared a "major incident".

According to The Guardian, a resident group had repeatedly warned of a fire risk at the building and claimed that a major fire was narrowly averted after a power fault in 2013.

The Metropolitan Police have set up an emergency number for anyone who is concerned about a friend or family member who might have been affected by the incident.
