Monthly Archives: January 2017

by

It's the most awkward time of year: we want to drape ourselves in spring's latest fashions, but our January budgets are barely supporting our iced caramel macchiato habit.

While we are definitely over sale season, there are a few bits out there that are actually really on-trend for the new season – but with a red tag attached.

Here are a few of our favourite finds from the high street.

1. Zara

Blouse, €19.99; Mesh dress, €17.99.

Zara just dropped its spring collection, but its sale section is still going strong. Thanks to Zara's fashion-forward selection, many of the sale pieces are currently on-trend for spring.

Ruffles are having a prolonged moment, and this striped work shirt is ideal for sprucing up a work wardrobe after the dull pullovers of winter.

Mesh and tulle are also huge, and throwing this mesh tunic over jeans and a T-shirt for shopping, or over an LBD for night will snag a majorly high style score.

2. ASOS

Pink dress, €39.33;  Pointed loafers, €23.33.

ASOS, the king of online sales, is still slashing its prices with a whopping 70 percent off.

Pink shades were seen storming down major designer catwalks like Balenciaga, Kenzo, Oscar de la Renta, Bottega Veneta and Valentino, making punchy pink the most fashion-forward spring shade.

Gucci also made loafers the most stylish shoe style, and a pointed toe adds a unique touch to a well-worn concept.

3. Topshop

Backpack €34.99; Mesh top €34.99.

Backpacks are still going strong throughout spring, and this floral and scorpion-adorned, double-zip piece looks achingly designer – but, luckily, it's actually from Topshop.

A new year signifies new beginnings, so whether your resolution is to study harder or hit the gym, you can cram all your books or workout essentials into this roomy leather carry-all.

4. H&M

Ruffled blouse, €14.99; Ring clasp bag €19.99.

H&M has also just unveiled its new spring line, but some of its sale pieces are just as covetable.

As we've already mentioned, ruffles are here to stay for spring, and this carmine-coloured blouse is ticking all the boxes.

Been obsessed with the Chloe Faye bag? This H&M dupe is currently on sale.

We'll fight you for the last one!

Ah unicorns… you can eat them, wear them, and now you can SMELL LIKE THEM.

That's right folks, there is now a unicorn scented perfume, and we're curious.

When you consider the fact that nobody has ever really smelled a unicorn, it's hard to imagine what the perfume will smell like.

According to A Beautiful Life, this perfume contains "bright notes of Lemon, Peppermint, and Pomegranate grounded by a fresh, earthy base. Mystery swirls and surrounds with Nag Champa and Frankincense."

"It's all bubblegum, bridles, and girly fantasy."

A 60ml bottle will set you back €50, which seems like a small price to pay for pure magic.

Sounds good to us.

He’s about to be replaced by Donald Trump as the ‘Leader of the Free World’, and it’s not hard to see why so many people are disappointed to see the end of Barack Obama’s presidency – the man is a legend!

That’s why we are very excited by the revelation that Barack is set to visit the Emerald Isle once again!

Kevin O’Malley, US Ambassador to Ireland, confirmed the great news today, during an interview with Marian Finucane.

Barack Obama running obama run potus

“The last sentence that the President said to me, on Wednesday of this week when we were saying goodbye, was ‘please tell them I’m coming’. So, I think that’s the President’s way of saying, informally, that you’ll probably see him again,” said O’Malley.

When pressed as to when Barack might grace us with his presence, O’Malley added: “My guess is in the coming year or so.”

Well, how about that?

Of course, Barack is no stranger to these shores. The 44th president and his wife, Michelle, visited back in May 2011, paying a special visit to Moneygall, where his ancestors are from.

Unless you've been living under a rock for the past 48 hours, you'll know that guitar-wielding singer Ed Sheeran returned with not one but two new singles yesterday.

The star took a year-long sabbatical from singing and social media, but came back with a bang 365 days later.

The songs, Shape of You and Castle On the Hill, are currently enjoying the top spots on the iTunes chart.

Both songs have received an overwhelmingly positive reaction online, as fans are obsessed with hearing Ed's new music.

The singer took to Twitter and Instagram to share the love to his fans, and to thank them for their support.

"Truly overwhelmed with the reaction to these new songs, I've never had anything like this, thank you for all your wonderful messages," said the star.

"Now, please blast them out as loud as you can from every speaker you can find, as many times as you can! Lots of love," he finished.

The singer is set to make history if he secures the number one and number two spots in the official single charts.

We can't wait for the rest of the album to be revealed.

Online dating is a huge phenomenon, and January is the busiest time to sign up to a site.

Tinder is officially mainstream, and admitting that you met your bae online is a normality rather than a novelty nowadays.

While we all have a few online dating horror stories about creepers and catfish, making true love a reality for 2017 could actually be a click away.

Things get pretty busy on online dating sites, as singletons flock to find their true love (or tonight's love) to kick off a new year.

"January 1 can signify a new start, so this year in particular we may see more singles than ever getting head starts on their resolutions. With many people ready to recommit themselves to finding someone special after the holidays, it's a great time to be looking for love," Shannon Smith, Communications Manager at PlentyOfFish, told Bustle.

15 percent of adults used online dating sites or mobile dating apps last year, according to findings by the Pew Research Center.

For the 18- to 24-year-old set, the percentage has nearly tripled from 10 percent in 2013 to 27 percent today.

This year, Match foresees 8:49 P.M. on January 8 as being the busiest time for online dating, when they predict that 42 percent more people than usual will join.

PlentyOfFish predicted that January 1 would break records, with a 48 percent increase in sign-ups.

Tinder also saw a 60 percent increase in super-likes during the week of Christmas, from people looking for a festive date.

The time frame between Christmas and Valentine's Day is peak season for first dates, so if finding love is one of your New Year's resolutions, now may be the time to get swiping.

The Citizens' Assembly is hosting a formal debate between pro-life and pro-choice speakers this afternoon, as the assembly continues to reconsider Ireland's controversial constitutional restrictions on abortion.

Today's meeting is the second of four that will focus on how the 100 randomly selected members should advise government legislators later this year, on the future of the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution.

The randomly selected members will hear talks from academics and medical, legal and ethical practitioners on various topics including fatal foetal abnormalities.

Ireland’s Catholic Bishops and the pro-life side have both criticised the assembly's use of the term "fatal foetal abnormalities" in its agenda for the meeting.

A bishops' spokesperson told RTÉ that the term normalises abortion and de-personalises the life of the foetus.

Individual case studies will also be discussed, including that of Amanda Mellet who received €30,000 in compensation from the Irish Government, after the United Nation's Human Rights Committee ruled that Ireland's ban on abortion was "cruel and inhuman".

Over 13,000 public submissions were made to the Citizens' Assembly ahead of the meetings, after online campaigns from both sides encourage the public to get involved.

The proceedings will be streamed on citizensassembly.ie.

Have you ever found that you don't have enough time to pre-drink before a night out?

WELL, why not pre-drink while you get glammed-up, with this excellent new beer?!

Swedish brewery Pangpang has collaborated with a creative agency, to develop a new beer that is meant to be consumed specifically in the shower.

Shower beer has a 10 percent alcohol volume, so it will hit you a little harder than normal beers, and it also comes in a small bottle which is designed to be finished in three sips.

Currently, the beer is only available in Sweden; HOWEVER, you keep an eye on Snask's website, where we're hoping they'll start shipping it internationally.

Word of warning: the bottles are made of glass, which is not exactly safe for a wet shower.

So please, shower beer responsibly.

Another day, another amazing beauty launch, right?

The gorgeous humans at Lancôme have launched their "Oh My Rose!" spring collection, which is inspired by "the sophisticated style of elegant Parisian interiors".

Ok, so @lancomeofficial's new #AbsolutelyRose highlighter is the prettiest beauty product we've ever seen

A photo posted by HuffPost UK Style (@huffpostukstyle) on

The most amazing product in this collection is the new highlighter, which is shaped like a rose.

The La Rose á Poudrer is by far the most decadent highlighter we have ever seen… and we want one.

The buildable highlighting powder is lodged within the delicate petals of the pink rose, so you simply have to swirl your brush gently across the flower, and BOOM… highlight heaven.

This luxurious hightlighter will be available online in the next few weeks, and will set you back €50.

Talks between Apollo House campaigners and Minister for Housing Simon Coveney ended last night without agreement.

The Home Sweet Home coalition group was in discussion with the Minister and officials for seven hours yesterday.

The two sides failed to agree on policies that were discussed at the meeting.

The group previously published a list of demands that the delegates were planning on bringing up at the meeting.

The list includes the establishment of 24-hour private rooms for all homeless people for a minimum of six months, to alleviate those sleeping on Ireland's streets; and a referendum on the right to housing.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Coveney said that the discussions would continue over the next few days.

He said he is hopeful that an agreement could be reached before the deadline to end the occupation next Wednesday.

The Home Sweet Home group and the homeless residents have been ordered by a judge to vacate Apollo House by January 11.

Urban Bourbon? Sign us up!

Yep, Ben & Jerry's might be releasing a boozy ice cream flavour, and we are so up for it.

Urban Bourbon consists of caramel ice cream, almonds, fudge flakes, and obvs, a few shots of caramel bourbon.

The Instagram account, Candy Hunting is famous for having the inside scoop (heh heh) on upcoming sweets and treats, and according to them, the flavour will be released in the next few months.

Now, Ben & Jerry's hasn't confirmed anything just yet, but as THRILLIST points out, the ice cream company applied to trademark the name Urban Bourbon a couple of months ago aaaand Walmart has also set up a black landing page to purchase it.

Oh, Ben and Jerry, why do you tease us?!

OK ladies, try not to panic, but Buffy the Vampire Slayer MIGHT be returning to our screens.

This year will mark the 20th anniversary since we first met Buffy, Angel and the gang, so it makes sense that the word "reboot" is being thrown around.

Sarah Michelle Gellar recently did an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, where she discussed what her role as the coolest vampire slayer EVER meant to her:

"Buffy reminded us that being different was not only OK but really cool — and at a time when most kids are trying to desperately fit in."

Sarah also spoke to them about the possibility of reviving the popular show, saying that "with high school and college as a backdrop, we were able to address racism, identity, bullying, guilt, death, first love and heartbreak using the demons as metaphors for the demons we all experience."

Sarah continued "I am not sure how that translates into adulthood, although I am sure it could."

However, Sarah had one condition with regards to the revival, in that Buffy is living "somewhere on a beautiful beach located far away from any Hellmouth."

PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN.
