Monthly Archives: January 2017

It's the official opening of the glamorous red carpet season (YAY), So as well as having a good ol'stare at the gowns, we were all over the hair and makeup trends too.

Which is why we were SO excited when makeup artist Fiona Stiles revealed EXACTLY how she created Lily Collins’ exquisite make-up look for the event.

The ever-lovely Lily is an ambassador for Lancôme, and so it was mainly their products used to achieve this beautiful look.

"What a dress! It was so beautiful and inspiring… We wanted to do a look that was beautiful but also bold and modern. It’s such a modern look, and Lily pulled it off incredibly,” Fiona told us.

Fiona also talked us through how exactly she achieved the look, and what products she used…

Face:

"After prepping the skin with Lancôme Advanced Génifique Youth Activating Concentrate Serum, I lightly evened out Lily’s skin with Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Long 24H Wear Foundation in  and brightened with the Lancôme Effacernes Concealer."

"Keeping the look light and fresh was paramount so I used Lancôme Blush Subtil in Apluma on the cheeks for that timeless, romantic feel."

Eyes and eyebrows:

"Lily’s brows are so incredible, so I mostly leave them alone. I just filled in the arches ever so slightly using the Fiona Stiles Beauty Micro-Precision Brow Pencil."

"On the eyes, I used the Lancôme Blush Subtil in Aplum dusted over it to create a wash of colour on the eyes. Under the brows, I used Lancôme Hypnôse pallete in Fraîcheur Rosée to blend the colours."

"She has stunning lashes, so a coat or two of mascara does the trick. Using the jet black Lancôme Hypnôse Mascara gave the perfect flirty lash. I skipped the bottom lashes to keep the look fresh."

Lips:

"Last but not least, I wanted the lips to be powdery matte, just an intense stamp of red, so I used the Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge in Souvenir Shade and dusted a touch of loose powder to take away any shine from the lip."

There you have it ladies, seems simple enough right?

Every county has things which set them apart from each other, right?

While Dublin is the capital, Cork thinks it's the capital, and Galway should probably be the capital, Kildare is happy to mosey along minding its own business for the most part.

And yet that doesn't mean Kildare-folk are exempt from stereotype or disdain from our fellow countrymen, so if you're a Lilywhite, chances are some –  if not all – of the following ring true.

1. Dubliners think you're a bogger, but almost every other county considers you a bit of a jackeen.

"Girls, we're in a limbo here."

2. Meath may be one of your nearest neighbours, but woe betide if you meet them on the pitch in Croke Park.

"This is our year lads, I can feel it."

3. We considered the opening of Kildare Village back in the day our own personal Oscars.

"Have you SEEN that place yet? Honestly, we've made it now. Can't afford a thing in the place."

4. The words 'bottleneck' and Monasterevin used go hand-in-hand.

"Don't wind Dad up, we're about to hit Monasterevin any second."

5. People outside of Kildare assume you're from a horsey set when the only time you actually encountered a horse was on holidays in Connemara.

"The Curragh? I wouldn't know how to get there if you paid me."

6. Telling people where you're from while abroad is made much easier when you say 'just outside Dublin'.

"I'm not a traitor, he just wouldn't have a jaysusin' clue what I meant if I said Leixlip."

7. You have spent at least one birthday giving it loads at Time Venue Naas.

"Look ladies, it's a big one, so I vote Time… and a 17-seater minivan."

8. You've had your flat accent mimicked so much you inadvertently adopted a Dublin accent during your teens.

"Wha? I always sounded like this, buh."

9. You know that certain very talented people hail from Kildare, and you'll reel those names off at the speed of light if it comes down to it.

"Well there's Damien Rice, Ray D'arcy, then your man who made Father Ted and the I.T Crowd, and then there's the time Ronan Keating bought a gaf here."

10. There's a big difference between north and south Kildare, and few people will accept an assumption they're from the other one.

"Maynooth? I presume you mean Moone, sir."

11. You still don't know the official name for that giant black ball on the Naas bypass.

"I know you've told me before, but remind me again and don't be a d*ck."

A letter dated today has confirmed that Martin McGuinness will step down from his position as Deputy First Minister this evening.

The Sinn Fein member will resign with "deep regret and reluctance" at 5pm today.

As confirmed by his party, Mr McGuiness's resignation is in protest at the Democratic Unionist Party's handling of a renewable energy scheme.

RTÉ reports that it is likely the move will prompt a snap election in the Northern Ireland Assembly. And independent.co.uk has stated that a "dangerous political crisis is now looming" in the region.

His DUP counterpart, Arlene Foster, continues to refuse to resign over a lingering financial scandal – despite repeated calls to do so from various political fractions in Northern Ireland.

She is accused of badly bundling a major government scheme while she was an executive minister.

Dubbed the “cash for ash” scandal, an apparent loophole seemed to give businesses a financial incentive to burn fuel pointless; close to half a billion pounds is thought to have been misspent in the process.

Furthermore, there is some suggestion that Ms Foster tried to cover-up her involvement in the programme.

She strongly denies any wrongdoing.

If you're at all familiar with the world of fitness, you'll know that those in the industry advocate for a healthy nutrition plan in addition to endless squats, lunges and kettlebell swings.

From telling us that abs are made in the kitchen to insisting you can't outrun a bad diet, fitness fanatics are all too aware that no matter how much time you spend in the gym, unhealthy food choices will inevitably set your progress back considerably.

So, if 2017 is all about educating yourself on fitness and nutrition, one of the simplest ways to start is to learn which items to eliminate from your diet, and – most importantly – which ones to replace them with.

And here are five to get you started…

1. Swap sugar for cinnamon

You might have vetoed every chocolate bar you've encountered since January 1, but have you addressed the various other ways sugar creeps into your diet?

If you've got a sweet tooth, it can be incredibly difficult to ditch the sugar, so it's no surprise many of continue to add a sneaky spoon into our tea, coffee or morning porridge.

Ditch this habit by replacing sugar and sweeteners with a small spoon of cinnamon – you'll be surprised how good it tastes.

2. Swap diet drinks for sparkling water with lemon / lime

We've long since realised that diet drinks are not much better for us than the full-fat version, but that doesn't stop us slurping on them more regularly than we probably should.

One very simple way to reduce the number of diet drinks you consume is by replacing them with sparkling water and slices of lime and lemon.

In addition to the kick the fruit gives the water, the sparkling version makes weaning ourselves off fizzy drinks a little easier.

3. Swap crisps for nuts

If you're used to snacking on crisps or including them with your lunch, it can be difficult to break the habit.

Don't deny yourself a savoury snack, but do stock up on nuts like almonds, cashews and walnuts instead.

Most supermarkets sell handy little snack-sized bags which means you don't overindulge, but do get the savoury kick you're looking for.

4. Swap breakfast cereal for an egg-based dish

Eggs are an incredible source of protein and keep you feeling fuller for longer, so why not opt for an egg-based breakfast when you can?

Replace your sugary cereal for two hard boiled eggs or an egg-white omelette on alternate days, and record how long it takes before hunger pangs kick in each day.

Kicking your day off with a protein-rich breakfast generally sees you through until lunch-time, and stops you reaching for a snack mid-morning.

5. Swap a so-called 'healthy' snack for peanut butter and apple

Instead of reaching for a cereal or granola bar on your tea break, why not team apple slices with a large spoon of peanut butter?

Not only will a small plate of apple and peanut butter fill you up until your next meal, it's a great source of protein and vitamins.

Oh, and it's absolutely delish too.

We've long been told of its virtues – that it's the most important meal of the day and certainly not one to be missed.

Still, in reality a lot of us also find that breakfast is often a serious PAIN to manage.

Because an extra 15 minutes in a toasty warm bed on a cold, dark January morning is going to trump porridge or poached eggs any day.

That a whole load of us just don't 'do' breakfast… beyond maybe a cup of coffee or tea.

However, it being the new year and all, we've decided that 2017 could very well prompt us to FINALLY embrace a morning feed of sorts.

Here are five fab breakfasts… for people who don't actually like eating breakfast:

1) Fruit and a yoghurt:

A great entry-level breakfast for those of us who are adamant that we're NOT hungry in the morning. And gloriously, this doesn't require any prep; scoff the yoghurt before taking the fruit along with you for the car, bus, train, or the walk into work. Should require you to be up approximately 30 seconds earlier than standard.

2) A smoothie:

A cheater's breakfast: it's quick, easy, filling – and it doesn't feel too 'much' if you're not a fan of early-morning snacks. Use fruits, nut milk, raw oats, nut butter, and protein powder for something sweet. Or go super healthy with leafy greens, ginger, avocado, citrus fruits, and seeds.

3) Home-made granola bars:

OK, bear with us here – sure thing home-made granola bars sounds a bit ambitious, but they're actually oh-so easy to master and a batch of them will do you for a week. Better still these delicious ones only use four ingredients: bananas, oats, dates, and nuts.

4) Peanut butter wrap:

Something a bit different for those who just don't 'do' eggs, cereals, or toast. Take a wholemeal wrap, spread with peanut or almond butter and then top with a mashed banana and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Wrap it up and devour – on the go if necessary.

5) Night-before porridge:

Porridge takes just minutes – minutes you may not have, however. The solution? Make up a batch the night before and leave it out, ready to be blasted in the microwave. Using oats – and the likes of chia seeds, grated apple, and cinnamon if you're feeling fancy – soak overnight in water, milk, or nut milk. The following morning you'll have breakfast ready in about 90seconds.

PS It might take a while to switch into the ways of the habitual breakfaster. However, a load of studies show that you'll be healthier and slimmer munching on something or other shortly after you rise.

"To anybody anywhere who feels like giving up sometimes but finds it in themselves to get up and keep fighting, I share this with you," so said Emma Stone upon receiving a Golden Globe for her role in La La Land at last night's award show.

In a short but moving speech, 28-year-old Emma exhibited the warmth and humility which has helped make her one of most popular and admired actresses in the industry over the past decade.

The actress, who has been nominated twice before but failed to come away with a gong, paid tribute to her family and friends before turning her attention to anyone who has shown strength of character in the face of adversity and rejection.

Articulate, eloquent, elegant, but – perhaps most importantly – humble, Emma Stone is easily one of our favourite stars, and here are just seven reasons why we adore her.

1. She does it for the redheads… and the blondes… and the brunettes.

No matter what colour your hair is, Emma is one of the few stars who can provide a picture-perfect example of the look you're going for in preparation for your next hair appointment.

2. The words of advice we don't realise we need to hear until she utters them.

Preach on Emma, preach on!

3. Her refusal to conform to Hollywood's beauty ideals, focussing instead on what actually makes a captivating performer… and, you know, person in general.

Spread the word, Miss Stone.

4. Her goofball sense of humour, and her reluctance to tame it no matter what the situation.

Interview, award show, or press event; Emma is always naked… except for her clothes and underwear obviously.

5. When she said what most of us begin thinking around lunch-time on a Friday.

How much do we wanna have Sunday pints wih this girl?

6. The time she fan-girled so hard over a Spice Girl, we all claimed her as our spirit animal.

Would you look at how excited she is?

7. The time she was so adorable, we almost wept.

Emma, we salute you.

BBC earned themselves hero status on Twitter this weekend after they wasted no time ripping it out of themselves over a pretty awkward moment on BBC Breakfast last Saturday.

Taking to the social media platform, the good folk behind the popular morning show shared a moment which hosts Rachel Burden and John Kay would probably rather see left on the cutting room floor.

Under the impression they were set to interview an intrepid mountaineer, John Kay began the segment with a lengthy introduction.

"A former British serviceman Leslie Binns turned around to save a woman while she was on her track, but he's now attempting to scale the world's highest mountain – AGAIN, he's going back, and he joins us now in the studio ahead of his next mission," John told viewers.

With both hosts and their guest sitting in front of a screen featuring Leslie Binns, the guest – who we now know isn't Leslie Binns – was forced to draw his hosts' attention to the fairly epic blunder.

"I think you have the wrong guest sir," Dr Todd Landman, a professor of political science and pro-vice chancellor of the University of Nottingham, told John and Rachel in a moment which had everyone viewing cringing into their sleeves.

And before Twitter could tear the show apart, BBC went on serious damage control and quickly shared the cringe-worthy footage with anyone who might have missed it before reminding the public that this wasn't, in fact, their first case of mistaken identity.

We mean, remember Guy Goma?!

We are absolute slaves to dry shampoo, and by the looks of things so is everyone on Instagram.

After taking to social media to promote Ouai Dry Shampoo Foam, celebrity hair stylist, Jen Atkin, has been inundated with comments from Instagram users only dying to get in on the action.

Set to drop in the States in four days time, the new product claims to actually remove oil and product build-up instead of simply concealing it for a day or two.

In addition to sharing footage of the product in the run-up to its launch, Jen has given Instagram users a tutorial on the way in which to apply to hair for maximum results.

Rocking a barnet that apparently hadn't been washed in three days, Jen applied the foam to her tresses, and instantly transformed a relatively lacklustre 'do into a volumised beachy look, and we're officially converted.

Not only the founder, but also a client. the Dry Shampoo Foam drops 1.13.17 @theouai Preorder on theouai.com

A video posted by Celebrity Hairstylist (@jenatkinhair) on

"Game changer," remarked one of Jen's followers while another added: "I want! I need! I must have!"

We're with them on that one.

This is Fah Jam, a baby elephant living in Thailand with a very sore little foot.

Fah Jam severely injured her front left foot a couple of months ago in an animal snare, and our hearts can't take it.

Last week, this GORGEOUS little elephant started a special hydrotherapy treatment as part of her rehabilitation process, and it is TOO MUCH.

According to Reuters, this water-based exercise will strengthen her bicep muscles, as she has been unable to stand on all fours since the accident.

Fah Jam also has to wear a special leg harness everyday, to help her walk.

The animal snare was set by villagers to prevent elephant intrusions in their area… which seems a little bit harsh if you ask me.

However, the lovely people caring for Fah Jam hope that one day she will be able to walk without her special harness.

Get well soon Fah Jam.

In a move which she hopes will help to educate others on the importance of skin protection, one Irish woman has decided to document her journey since discovering she has pre-cancerous cells on her face as a result of years spent tanning.

Mags Murphy, who has taken to Facebook to highlight the repercussions of decades avoiding sunscreen and using sunbeds, has been inundated with support from the public in recent days.

"Guess if your reading this you'll know me, you'll know how much I love sunshine you'll know I've spent over a decade living in Crete tanning myself to "look good" thinking hey I'm brown I don't need high sun factor,(what a d*ck)", she wrote. (sic)

"I've spent summers doing sunbeds just for a tan in the sh*tty Irish weather and a childhood running the streets all day with not a thought for sunfactor."

In the post which has been shared hundreds of times, she continued: "Unfortunately all this lovely tanning has a price to pay cause now I have PRE cancerous cells on my face and have started treatment to remove them,"

"I've to use a cream that's going to burn them out, apparently it's quite painful and gruesome as the weeks go on but on the good side it should get rid of the cells and treatment and is only for a month."

Explaining that she intends to shares photos of her treatment and progress, Mags continued: "I heard all the warnings years ago and closed my eyes and ears to it all maybe someone will open their eyes to this if it's closer to home."

"I'm not looking for sympathy just to raise awareness. PLEASE SHARE especially with your tan loving friends," Mags requested.

Since posting the initial message, Mags has gone onto share a number of images which highlight the treatment and the effect it is having on her wellbeing.

"Face starting to tingle and itch today. Marks that were already visible burn a little," she told her followers while encouraging them to share the images and posts online.

"You are such a brave and outstanding person," wrote one of Mag's followers this week while another added: "Well done you for creating so much awareness."

"Fair play to you mags for raising awareness. Best of luck with your treatment. we should all embrace our lovely blue irish colour but i am sure we have all been foolish with the sun over the years," wrote another member of the public. (sic)

Remarking on the impact her posts could have on countless individuals, Mags wrote: "Well over 12,000 views now. People if your just viewing please it only takes 2 seconds to share, after all this is about trying to raise awareness." (sic)
