Yearly Archives: 2016

by

It happens every year, but it never gets us any less gleeful.

After a fairly rotten winter (looking at you, Storms Desmond and Jonas), we seem to finally be emerging out the other end.

Yes, it's still bitterly cold and intermittently lashing rain, but the evenings are slowly getting brighter and the people of Ireland are positively GIDDY.

Last night the sun didn't set until 5.50pm, and Twitter had an absolute field day.

People could barely string sentences together, they were so excited:

There were a lot of post-work pictures:

Some regressed into Irish Mammy-isms:

People have long attempted to figure out why we get such indescribable joy from leaving work to a still-bright sky, but it's just one of those THINGS, isn't it?

Ah, the #grandstretch. Long may it last.

We all know waking up from surgery can be mega disorientating, especially if you still have some anaesthetic floating around your body.

And as for this girl, Emma, she had one very funny trip when she woke up after getting her wisdom teeth removed.

Emma believed she was reality star Kylie Jenner – and let's just say she wasn't too happy about it.

"I'm related to Kim Kardashian… I just found out I'm Kylie Jenner and you didn't tell me," she mumbles to her mother.

But it didn't stop there. Her mam decided to play along and say that her dad is Caitlyn, to which Emma starts SOBBING.

In the end, Emma is still coming to terms with her new found reality and declares, "I want to go home… to my mansion."

We don't know whether she was disappointed or happy when she got home to her real house, but either way, it was one funny trip.

Dieting, restrictive eating and intense workout sessions seem to be part and parcel of life for many young Irish people, but when does 'looking after your body' cross the line to a dangerous obsession?

Many eating disorder sufferers point to a lack of control in their lives or a time of intense upheaval as the moment their issues with food began. But it's not always quite so clear cut, as Irish woman Fiona Morris can attest to.

"For so many years, people, family, friends, doctors, counsellors tried to uncover the reason for why my eating disorder began," she says of her 12-year experience with anorexia.

"What was the root cause? When did it all start? I thought that if I knew the reason it all started, then I would be able to find the way out of it."

Today marks the second day of Eating Disorder Awareness Week in Ireland and around the world, and Fiona has graciously shared her story with us.

"I put the debut of anorexia down to a culmination of feeling inadequate, seeing myself as 'ugly', unfortunate circumstances and bad timing," she says.

"Over the years I have realised that finding out how or why I got sick wasn't nearly as important as realising how I could get better."

While she does not yet fully consider herself as "recovered," Fiona says she is "proud AF" with how far she has come.

"I am not going to say I am one of the 'lucky' ones, luck has not played any part. What I will say is that I am one of the brave ones, who was strong enough to stand up for my right to be alive and to have a place in this world.

"I would give a lot to be able to get back the years I lost to anorexia…but the reality is, I can never get those years back.

"I can never erase the years of crying, lying, wishing, wanting, jealousy, hatred, frustration, fear and guilt."

Despite all of this, Fiona still tries her best to take even some small positive lessons from her experience.

"Having anorexia, has no doubt taught me a lot about myself and about life. Yes, I regret the years I spent with it, but I don't regret all the lessons it taught me.

"I understand the beauty and fragility of life. I understand the blessing that we have been given with life. I have compassion and understanding.

"I have a clear and balanced perspective on what is important and most of all, I have a deep appreciation for good relationships, with both friends and family.

"I have had to try and take some positive out of my 'lost' years and it is these life lessons that have stood out."

After a long-term battle with her eating disorder, Fiona said she now accepts her experience as a part of herself – and wants to use what she has learnt to help others.

"I would be lying if I said that I don't still struggle. I do. I really really do. I have had it for 12 years so I wouldn't expect to not have tough times.

"I am not sharing this for praise or attention, I know myself how much I have accomplished. I am sharing this to reach out to people struggling with an eating disorder.

"I want you guys to know that no matter how long you have had an eating disorder for, how many times you have got  a bit better only to fall down again, how bad it may seem right now, no matter how hopeless you feel or how scared you are about taking a step forward… that recovery is possible for everyone.

"Recovery is a full time job and I am OK with that, because the pay is more than any job will give you."

Charlotte Church celebrated her 30th birthday by hosting a wild party in her house, but now her neighbours are in RAGE.

Residents if the small village in Wales were less than impressed when music was heard playing until nearly 6am, and they called it a "warzone" on the street outside.

Nearly 100 guests attended the party in Charlotte's £1.5m (€1.9m) home and the police received numerous calls of complaint.

Some disgruntled neighbours said they heard a woman "shrieking" all night long.

A local man said: "I called the police about 4.30am. I was sick of hearing this wailing coming out over a speaker system. I presume it was Charlotte singing. Put it this way – she's no longer got the voice of an angel."

While another said, "Wow, I heard it till 5am, I'm all for people having a good time but the noise was ridiculous."

With the General Election taking place this Friday February 26, taxpayers are taking their last chance to air their feelings on certain important issues.

Chief among these is mental health, and specifically the issue of Ireland's guilt-heavy culture around anxiety and depression.

The Rubberbandits voiced their opinions just that problem last night, during a sketch on Des Bishop's RTÉ Election Special.

What started out as an off-the-wall p*sstake of Gerry Adams, Enda Kenny and Micheál Martin through the world of Blindboy's dreams soon turned into a very astute observation about mental health, anxiety, Catholic guilt and the Irish culture of bottling up our emotions.

"We still punish ourselves – especially young men. The fear of talking to a therapist carries with a label of being 'bad' or 'broken'," said Blindboy.

"We treat counselling like it's some big dirty secret."

Unsurprisingly, the video got a huge reaction online:

Fair play to the lads for highlighting a very important issue in Irish society,

We're probably more upset about this than any other celeb break-up, because we really thought these two would last.

Lea Michele is a single lady once more as she has split from her model boyfriend, Matthew Paetz after nearly two years of dating.

"Their split is a huge shock to all their friends," a source told Entertainment Weekly.

"Lea and Matthew were talking about getting engaged as recently as around the holidays. Everyone thought they would get engaged soon, but definitely not split."

But if we're judging by her social media accounts, it seems that Lea has a strong backbone of friends by her side.

Matthew was Lea's first boyfriend since the death of her ex-boyfriend and former Glee co-star Cory Monteith in 2013. We hope she finds the right love soon!

As Kylie Jenner debuted her new cooking show last night, Blac Chyna decided to give her two cents on the new venture.

"B**ch bye. Follow @cookingwithchyna #infatuatedwitChy," she captioned an Instagram post, which showed off her own cooking skills.

But Kylie boyfriend and Chyna's ex, Tyga decided that enough was enough and posted a video on Snapchat slamming his ex-girlfriend.

"2016. 2016. Motherf**kers gotta stop acting like they invented every motherf**king thing out here… Everything's already been done," he said.

"Everything that she's doing, everything that this person is doing, or the next person… somebody already did it."

Ouch, Ty. There's certainly no love lost there.

If you dreamed of living in a castle someday, then feast your eyes on this.

Not only is this a pretty pink castle fit for a princess (or queen, whatever you prefer), it's also made entirely out of cake.

Yep, CAKE. And icing, and sweets and cherries. Yum.

The exhibit, which is titled Break Bread, is a wonderful dessert art installation, featuring six rooms, cake sculptures, a Cirque Du Soleil-themed bar and a chandelier made out of hard sweets. It also has a mind-blowing amount of pink icing on the inside.

BRB.. we're pretty much set on booking tickets to LA now.

He tweeted about it, he released a statement about it, but was it all lies?

Yep, after Jeremy confessed that his relationship with Stephanie Davis is over, within a DAY he shared a photo of them in bed together.

He captioned the snap, "cool story, bro." Erm… OK?

This comes after a whirlwind weekend where Jeremy went missing and Steph dyed her hair blonde.

The couple were supposed to make an appearance together on Loose Women yesterday but Jez's rep said that because they broke up, he won't make it to the show.

"He cares really deeply for Steph, however, the pressure of the relationship was just too much. He really wishes it could have worked out, and he wishes Steph the very best for the future."

BUT then, Steph took to Twitter to say the pair were definitely still a couple.

We don't know about you, but we're mega confused and wish they'd just make up their minds. #SorryNotSorry.

Yep, the reality star has just added 'chef' to her CV as she debuted her new cooking show on Instagram last night.

the first episode of Cooking with Kylie is now up on TheKylieJenner.com & The Kylie Jenner Official App

You can watch the full show on her app and website, where she cook sweet potato (yams, as American's call them) with marshmallows on top.

She even has a 'sous chef', Victoria, who helps her out around the kitchen.

All of her ingredients are organic and to be fair, they do look tasty when they come out of the oven.

What can't this woman do, huh?
