Period week is probably the hardest time of the month when you are trying to be healthy.

Thanks to those hormones, all you want is to crawl onto the couch under a blanket with a bottomless carton of cookie dough ice-cream.

While cramps, bad skin, back and breast pain are on the menu, there are good food options you should try and include in your diet to make you feel better.

Iron is your friend…

Losing blood probably means you are running low on iron, which makes you feel weak, tired, probably moody, and could lead to anaemia.

To prevent it, choose food that provides a good amount of iron, such as clams, mussels, red meat, leafy greens, beans and legumes.

Dark chocolate is also a good source of the mineral, should you need another reason to always keep a supply at your desk.

… and so is vitamin C

To enhance iron absorption, you need to make sure to get enough vitamin C, which also helps you feel more energised.

Good sources of vitamin C are kiwis, oranges, mangoes, strawberries, as well as broccoli and peppers.

Don’t forget magnesium

While magnesium is essential to prevent premenstrual syndrome (whose effects include mood swings, irritability, anxiety, bloating, fluid retention, breast pain or headaches), it is also an important nutrient you need during your period, as it helps relieve muscle pain, stress and tensions in the body.

Go for bananas, nuts, spinach, porridge, quinoa and dark chocolate and you should meet your daily needs.

Calcium calms the cramps

Calcium has been shown to help reduce menstrual pain so if you suffer from cramps, watch your calcium intake.

Dairy products are obvious sources of calcium but almonds, kale, broccoli, oats, spinach, beans and tofu also provide a healthy amount of the mineral.

Good fats are anti-inflammatory

Salmon, sardines and mackerel are among the good sources of Omega 3, a fatty acid that helps combat inflammation. If you don’t like fish, avocado and rapeseed oil also contain a lot of Omega 3.

Do as well as you can, but no pressure…

We know it might be hard to find motivation to go to the gym and reach for healthy food at that time of the month, but maybe you could, say, eat your ice-cream, but have a healthy stir-fry beforehand to make sure you get all the nutrients you need?

The new series of The Great British Bake Off kicks off next week, and while we're still not over the fact that Mary Berry is no longer part of it, we're pretty excited about this year's series.

That's because they're bringing in a new addition to the show, one which, we're sure, plenty of people will be living for: vegan week.

Meet our new batch of bakers #starts28th

A post shared by Paul Hollywood (@paul.hollywood) on

Explaining the reason for it, judge Paul Hollywood said that they wanted something a little different for the new series, and considering the huge growth in veganism in recent times, vegan week was just a natural fit.

"We wanted something different and something to represent what was happening in this country. Veganism was something that seems to be growing, and we wanted to represent it on the Bake Off this year, and that's why it's in," the baker said at a press event.

Neither Paul nor fellow judge Prue Leith are vegans, and have said that the vegan bakes were judged just as they would "something conventional".

"You can't judge it and say, 'It's okay for a vegan'. It has to be good. Period. And that's how we judged it – we were surprised."

Morning x

A post shared by Paul Hollywood (@paul.hollywood) on

The judges encouraged vegans or anyone thinking of becoming a vegan to watch the show, insisting that it is a week not to be missed.

"If you're a vegan, or you're thinking about it, and just worried about how it's going to change your life, watch it and see."

The Great British Bake Off returns to Channel 4 on Tuesday, 28th August at 8pm.

Anne Marie brought us the TUNE that is 2002.

The singer has worked her magic once again, but this time she has stepped out of the studio and into the world of food.

Taking to Twitter, the British superstar has started a chain of weirdo food combos and honestly, it is giving us a laugh and the shivers.

Get ready to either vomit or defend some of the food responses.

And, it's not a bad way to find out who the real freaks of your friend group are.

Here are some obsessions with vegetables, tomato ketchup and salt. – EW.

Nutella fans shield your eyes now.

Although these make more sense that the vegetables, they're still odd.

We can understand the appeal of sweetness of the Nutella paired with the saltness of the meat, but the cheese?

The next food combo is actually a personal favourite and I will defend it.

The balance of hot and cold, mixed with the salt and sweet makes this a delicious pairing.

Yep – it's the old staple – chips and ice cream/milkshake.

Then we revert to the right down wrong food friends and we can't cope.

Does vinegar really accompany baked beans? What happened to good old fashioned toast?

We will not be thanking you – that sounds horrendous.

Now people are sinning against the perfection that is avocado.

This twitter account suggests adding jam to our avocado and we are having none of it.

Is there any food combinations you swear by?

I highly recommend white bread, buttered with bourbon biscuits – to make the ultimate sandwich.

Give it a go before you call me out and bunch me in with these food weirdos!

When you don't have time to cook, making a salad for dinner is one of the quickest ways to whip up something healthy in minutes.

If you think the kids might not be happy with it, our foolproof method to building a yummy salad will prove otherwise – it is tried, tested and approved!

Our secret is to begin your salad by layer and to make sure you have at least one element for each of the layers:

1. A base: we recommend to start with a green base, such as spinach, lettuce, rocket, mixed leaves… For a more hearty recipe, you can also go for cooked quinoa, lentils or pasta.

2. Vegetables: cucumber, radish, peppers, carrot ribbons, red onions, roasted sweet potatoes, butternut squash… The more, the merrier: this layer is to ensure you get your five-a-day and also to give some crunch and texture to your salad.

3. Protein: leftover rotisserie chicken, boiled eggs, ham, cooked salmon, tofu, grilled haloumi, chickpeas…

4. Something soft: if you ask us, a salad needs avocado, but if you don't like it or don't have any at hand, it can also be feta, goat's cheese, cooked butternut squash, sweet potatoes or sundried tomatoes.

5. Something sweet: raisins, grapes, strawberries, goji berries, cranberries, pineapple or a drizzle of sweet chilli sauce is essential to bring your salad to the next level.

6. Something crunchy: mostly nuts and/or seeds, this layer is the cherry on the cake. We recommend flaked almonds, toasted pine nuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, walnuts, chopped halzelnuts…

7. Fresh herbs: basil, coriander, mint, spring onions… whatever you have on your balcony or in the fridge will do but don't skip this step!

8. Optional: If you didn't already, you can also add cheese to your salad, such as feta, cheddar, gruyere, blue, goat's cheese.

Last but not least, make a nice dressing: 1 tsp mustard, 1 tbsp vinegar, 2 tbsp olive oil, salt and pepper is our favourite one but don't be afraid to play around. There are a million easy recipes on the Internet.

To give you some inspiration, here are some of our favourite combinations for the perfect salad:

Mediterranean

1. Mixed leaves
2. Cherry tomatoes, cucumber, red onions
3. Leftover chicken
4. Avocado, sundried tomatoes
5. Raisins
6. Pine nuts
7. Basil

Asian

1. Spinach
2. Sweet peppers, cucumber
3. Smoked or cooked salmon
4. Avocado
5. Sweet chilli sauce
6. Chopped peanuts
7. Mint, spring onions

Country

1. Mixed leaves
2. Radish
3. Eggs and crispy bacon
4. Goat's cheese
5. Cranberries
6. Walnuts
7. Mint

Gwan, give it a go!

Like the upstanding millennials that we are, we adore a good brunch. But more than a good brunch, we adore a cheap brunch.

And what could be cheaper than brunch dishes you can whip up from the comfort of your own kitchen?

Ladies, we give you our three favourites…

Ham and cheese womelette

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 slice of ham, chopped
  • ½ cup of grated cheese
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • Spring onions to taste

Whip the eggs until they create a light foam. Add the cheese, ham, paprika, salt and pepper.

Preheat the waffle maker and spray with oil. Pour the mix into the waffle maker and cook for about 4 minutes.

Scatter with spring onions and more cheese if desired. Enjoy!

Brunch frittata

  • 80g grated cheese
  • 8 free range eggs
  • 200g potatoes, peeled and finely sliced
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 4 rashers, chopped
  • 1 handful baby spinach leaves
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp paprika

Put the sliced potatoes in a pot of boiling water and simmer for 10 minutes. Drain them and set aside.

Heat the oil in a large frying pan and add the onion and the chopped bacon. Cook for about 5 minutes. Set aside.

Keep the pan on the heat and place the sliced potatoes in one layer on the bottom of the pan. Scatter the bacon, onion and the spinach. Cook for about 3 minutes, until the spinach starts to soften.

Beat the eggs until they form a light foam, add some pepper, the paprika and the cheese.

Add the egg mixture to the pan, put a lid on it and cook over medium to low heat for 10 minutes, or until the eggs are cooked through.

Serve cut into wedges with a some cherry tomatoes and sliced avocado if desired.

Breakfast baked potatoes

  • 4 medium potatoes, cooked
  • 4 free range eggs
  • ½ onion, finely chopped
  • 100g bacon, chopped sliced
  • 75g grated cheddar
  • A few sprigs of chives
  • Salt and pepper
  • Olive oil
  • Sour cream, to serve

Preheat oven to 180°C. In a large pan, heat a tablespoon of olive oil and cook the onions until translucent. Add the bacon and cook for 3 minutes.

Cut out the top of each potato and scoop out most of the inside (you can keep it to make potato croquettes).

Stuff each potato with the bacon and onion mix, some cheese then crack one egg inside. Season with salt and pepper. Add more cheese on top and place on a lined baking sheet. Cook for about 20 to 25 minutes.

Top with chopped chives and serve with baby spinach and a dollop of sour cream if desired.

What is your typical weekday breakfast?

I love to mix it up at breakfast time. My favourites would have to be a slim bagel, smoked salmon and a poached egg, or some fruit with Greek style yoghurt and maybe some muesli too.

A coffee is always a must on the side!

What do you usually have for dinner?

I generally would mix up the type of dinners I make but all would consist of meat, vegetables and a small portion of carbs.

Carbs like sweet potatoes, quinoa or butternut squash are always a hit.

Is it different at the weekend?

Yes it can be for sure, it's a lot easier I find to fall off the bandwagon at the weekends and get a takeaway or indulge a little bit more.

I try to be as healthy as possible but we're all allowed a treat! We will cook something nice like Mexican food, fajitas are always a winner!

I love to nibble on things like crackers and cheese, meats and hummus.

The most incredible lunch. Buckwheat Pancakes #Yum #London #Lunch

Do you snack during the day?

Of course, I always try to include as much protein as possible. My trainer recommends that so I'd have a protein shake with a banana, almond butter and milk. It's so nice, it's like a peanut butter milkshake!

Otherwise I'd have Greek style yoghurt with berries or some nuts.

What would be your ideal food day?

Cheese! Anything with cheese and more cheese! With bacon or bread. All the good stuff!

What is your favourite dessert?

Ohhh definitely a warm chocolate brownie and ice cream!

What is your favourite meal of the day?

I would have to say breakfast. There are so many different things you can have for breakfast. Having a big breakfast or going out for brunch, I love both.

Your favourite restaurant in Dublin/Ireland/the world?

That's a really tough question! I don't know if I have a favourite because I love to try new places all of the time.

A great brunch spot though would be Noah&Co. in Liffey Valley. The food is delish.

The best brunch place in Dublin?

We love HQ on Grand Canal, that's gorgeous!!

Any “food pet peeves”?

Mine would have to be when people automatically say they don't like something when they haven't tried it!

I'm one to try before I decide whether or not I like it.

What food would you not eat for the whole world?

I hate ginger! It makes me feel ill even thinking about it…

What can we always find in your fridge?

Cheese, milk, yoghurt, oh and eggs!

You have friends over for dinner, what do you cook for them?

I love to cook and I have a few favourites.

I would go for spaghetti bolognese, I love spaghetti.A stir fry either, my Mam says they are the best! I do a really nice chicken satay as well. Any of those I'd say!

Do you find it hard to eat a healthy diet on a daily basis?

If I stay in 'the zone' I am totally fine, keeping up with workouts and eating healthy each week but it's when I fall off the bandwagon like I would have on my holidays, I find it really hard to get back on track!

I'm an 80/20 kind of girl though, so I do my best to eat healthy and work out as much as possible but I love some treats or cheat meals too.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Cheese! Any type, cheese boards with all the trimmings, olives, meats and grapes.

Cheese on top of cheese on top of cheese!!

We ALL know that feeling well on a Friday night; feeling so worn out with exhaustion that the mere thought of cooking a meal for yourself makes you want to shed a tear. "I didn't work all week to deal with this," you think, wearingly. That is where the 'backup plan' comes into place. The backup plan being, having something on hand that is restaurant quality delicious, that you can prepare at home, requiring minimal effort from you.

That let's be honest, that 'something' is always pizza – at least when it's this close to the weekend. Unfollow anyone on social who is willing to dispute that – you don't need that kind of negativity in your life, tbh.

Thankfully, Milanos are here to bring you that Friday feeling with their newest additions to their supermarket (and very budget-friendly) pizza range (why yes, you can buy Milano goodness to cook at home), including an out-of-this-world American pizza (€5.69). It originates from a signature restaurant recipe (so you know it's going to taste GOOD), made with pepperoni, mozzarella and Milano’s famous passata. In one word: heavenly.

You can also get their Pollo Ad astra (€5.69), a classic pizza base topped with chicken, Peppadew™ peppers, Cajun spice and mozzarella. Did you know that this one is already a staple on the Milano restaurant menu? This recipe has been perfectly crafted so you can love and enjoy it when you're just too tired to leave the house.

Their supermarket range now also has more products should you want a little something on the side (so to speak), including three new salad dressings, House, House Light and Caesar, all at €3 each. This will be additions to the fan-favourites in the range, from the scrumptious dough balls which we always need more of (€2.99) and Milano classic pizzas, Margherita and Sloppy Giuseppe.

Milano’s new (and very tasty) retail product range is now available selected Tesco stores nationwide.

Why not treat yo-self? You deserve it.

Swap milk chocolate for 70 or, even better, 85% dark chocolate.

Rich in minerals, good fats, antioxidants, low in sugar and often dairy-free, dark chocolate is a healthy treat that you should indulge on a regular basis this year. One or two squares after a meal pleases the taste buds, totally guilt-free. The flavours are so strong, you won’t need the whole tablet to feel satisfied.

Swap white for brown

White rice, white bread, white pasta: these can all be replaced with their whole grain version, organic if possible. The health benefits? More nutrients and more fibres, which are key to a healthier gut, help control blood sugar and maintain a healthy weight.

Swap juices for fruits and water

Juicing may have been a huge food and health trend for the past few years, yet some experts would like you to drop the juice to go for the whole fruit instead. Fruit juice passes through the digestive system more rapidly than whole fruits, which are full of fibres, and have a much higher glycemic index. More generally, try and eat your calories instead of drinking them.

Make your own food whenever you can

We know that a busy life often means ready-made food but each little swap matters. Homemade soup, homemade salad dressing… some staples are so quick and easy to cook, you don’t have any excuse to buy it pre-made. Plus you can make them in batch and keep in the fridge or freeze them.

Once you try homemade dressing – which is basically one teaspoon of mustard, 2 tablespoons of vinegar, 4 tablespoons of oil, salt and pepper – you can never buy a supermarket one again.

Swap your chocolate bar or biscuits for an apple with nut butter

Avoid chocolate bars and their empty calories. Packed with fibres, vitamins, minerals and good fats, apples and nut butter are one of the healthiest snacks you can make at home or in the office, without sacrificing taste – it’s actually so good you might become addicted.

Cut your apple into quarters, spread some peanut or almond butter, and sprinkle with cinnamon for added nutritional value and taste. If you are watching your weight, just don't put too much nut butter on your apple are it is very heavy in calories.

Whoever said there's no such thing as a free lunch had obviously never heard of The Back Page!

The eatery in Phibsboro has become well known for giving away free meals to people.

They pick two random names each week – one male and one female – and then whoever is lucky enough to have that name gets to eat for free.

And this week, they are calling on Orlas and Olivers to pop in between 10am and 3:30pm to enjoy a tasty lunch on them.

The sports bar took to Facebook yesterday to announce this week's names, advising people to bring ID because, hey, who wouldn't try to nab themselves some free food?

We just have one little question: is the call-out just for Orlas… or does it include Orlaiths and Orlaghs?

In Paris, brunch is usually served only on Sundays and cafes and restaurants tend offer one option including all the food and drinks.

Some places work differently and don't require you to get the whole meal deal so check beforehand if you don't necessarily want to spend 25 quid in one go.

As you would assume, brunch is quite popular in Paris so queues can be quite frightening if you show up to a trendy place at 1pm on a Sunday. But most of the time, the food is worth the wait! Here is our pick for the best places to go for brunch in Paris.

1. Café Marlette

Her successful blog French Foodie in Dublin got her to be named Food Influencer of the Year 2017 at the inaugural SHEmazing! Awards and she has been using her knowledge about the Dublin food scene to create Delicious Dublin Tours.

This is why when Ketty suggests a restaurant or a bar in Dublin, we are listening carefully!

For SHEmazing!, the French lady is sharing some of her favourite places in Dublin and also how she balances out her taste for rich food.

What is your typical weekday breakfast?

I eat porridge every morning for breakfast, it’s great fuel after an early morning run and the only breakfast that keeps me full enough until lunch!

I like putting lots of different toppings in my porridge: seasonal fruits, nuts, dried fruits, seeds and anything that makes it a bit less boring.

When the weather is warmer I struggle to eat porridge and replace it with yoghurt and fruits.

What about lunch?

My office is only a 7 minute walk away from my place so I go home and most of the time I either eat the leftovers from the night before or I quickly cook something with what I have in the fridge and pantry.

I often make salad bowls with a base of grains (I love couscous) or starch and whatever vegetables I have in handy. I don’t have a typical lunch, it could be a nice salad, pasta carbonara or even avocado on sourdough toast with sriracha if I don’t have much time.

Sometimes though I sneak into 147 Deli for one of their delicious sandwiches, as a treat!

Tasty leftovers for lunch: chicken with caramelised onions and cardamom rice (@ottolenghi's recipe). Now it's time to get out and enjoy that Dublin sunshine!

What do you usually have for dinner?

Dinner is better because I have more time and always cook something from scratch. I love using Jamie Oliver’s cookbooks or the Ballymaloe course cookbook to find inspiration in the evening and cook something simple but tasty.

There’s very often something meaty and a bit of veg, although my husband and I tend to eat too many carbs (I’m a sucker for pasta and potatoes). Dinner can be duck confit with gratin dauphinois and a green salad or lamb koftas with a cucumber and tomato salad.

I like cooking lots of different things, it relaxes me in the evening.

Is it different at the weekend?

I really treat myself at the weekend… I cook nice brunches and I usually eat out at least once during the weekend.

This is the time of the week when I splurge in Fallon and Byrne or Temple Bar Food Market, cook and eat indulgent things!

A very French start to the day @fallonandbyrne before getting stuck into my wedding 'to do' list!

Do you snack during the day?

I rarely snack during the day, just because I never buy snacks when I go food shopping. I’m human though and sometimes I have something small like a macaron or a piece of dark chocolate.

There’s one exception though, when I’m hungover I could snack all day long, but that doesn’t happen too often…

What would be your ideal food day?

The bacon sandwich from the Pepper Pot for brunch, dinner at Forest and Marcy and cocktails at Peruke and Periwig.

Chargrilled & pickled courgettes, basil, buttermilk, spiced crab

The one food you could have everyday for the rest of your life?

Moliterno al tartufo, a truffle cheese from Sardinia.

What is your favourite dessert?

Floating islands – it’s been a favourite of mine since my childhood, but very few places ever have it on their menu.

What is your favourite meal of the day?

It only happens at the weekend, but my favourite meal has to be brunch. I associate brunch with having time off and being relaxed, and just love putting together something simple and flavoursome.

Your favourite restaurant in Dublin/Ireland/the world?

Forest and Marcy, the chef is talented and creative and I love the casual atmosphere.

Closely followed by Delahunt and Etto, they’re very consistent and showcase Dublin’s vibrant and emerging food scene.

The best brunch place in Dublin?

My apartment, that’s why I rarely eat out for brunch.

Any 'food pet peeves'?

This might be controversial but I’m not a big fan of people who self-diagnose themselves with food intolerance.

I also don’t really understand people who call themselves ‘foodies’ yet have a long list of things they don’t eat.

What food would you not eat for the whole world?

I know it’s likely to become the food of the future but I’m scared of eating insects. I’m sure I will try at some stage but yes, I still have a mental block.

What can we always find in your fridge?

Nduja – this spreadable pork salami from Italy is delicious on pizza, as a pasta sauce or even just lightly grilled on bread, I could eat it all day.

Sriracha – I love siracha sauce as it spices up any meal.

Irish butter – Ireland has some of the best butter in the world so I’ll always have at least one big stick of Irish butter at home.

You have friends over for dinner, what do you cook for them?

I love having friends over for dinner and never cook the same thing.

It could be homemade pizzas, a crepe or raclette party, a Middle Eastern feast, traditional French food or lots of tapas… I like changing the theme of my dinner parties!

Do you find it hard to eat a healthy diet in a daily basis?

Yes… because I tend to be a bit too much of an Epicurean! I don’t eat junk or processed food but I tend to eat homemade food that is quite rich.

I’m conscious that I don’t eat as much vegetables as I should be eating and I don’t drink enough water but I exercise a lot. I never feel guilty though, food is pleasure for me and life is short!

What is your guilty pleasure?

A dirty burger from Wowburger.

We’re not fat, just big bun-ed! #Wowburger #InstaGood #LoveDublin #LoveBurgers #DublinDaily

What is you go-to drink in a bar/pub?

When I go to the pub, I try to order craft beer and usually an IPA, whenever possible.

I mostly go to one of the Galway Brewery pubs, I love their double IPA ‘Of Foam and Fury’. I never drink wine in pubs or bars but I love a good cocktail sometimes.

Your favourite place for a drink in Dublin?

I like the Black Sheep and P. Mac's for beer, Peruke and Periwig or the Vintage Cocktail Club for cocktails.
