If you're getting ready to head off to university, don't forget that 5:15pm this evening is the deadline for the lowered CAO application fee of €30.

Those who apply afterward will pay a fee of €45. The normal closing date for applicants is February 1.

The CAO allows applicants to add more courses, change the order of their preferences, or remove courses for no extra charge until January 31.

If you need more time to mull the decision over, applicants can modify their course selection up until July 1, though for some programmes that is not allowed.

Those 'restricted application' courses may involve interviews or portfolios, and any such courses must be listed on CAO applications by February 1.

As well, anyone applying to medical school will also need to register with HPAT (health professionals' admission test) Ireland by 5:15pm tonight in order to pay the early-bird €135 fee rather than the standard €205.

Dr Derek O'Byrne from Waterford Institute of Technology shared some sage advice with BreakingNews.ie for all those applying with the CAO.

"It’s a difficult process, there are a lot of choices available to people," he noted.

"What’s really important though is that they pick programmes that very much suit their skill-sets and their interests."

"If people pick a programme that they’re interested in, and that they enjoy, they’re much more likely to do well in that programme," he continued.

"Doing research, understanding what the content of a programme is, going to the likes of open days – that’s where you really build an understanding of the programme you’re about to study."

A list of other important dates for the CAO can be found here.

And best of luck!

We all know Kim K has a penchant for breaking the internet, and the naming of her third child was another perfect opportunity.

Fans speculated for days over what moniker Kimye would grant their new arrival, and the news came last night in Twitter form – Chicago West.

Twitter went into overdrive as fans and bystanders alike gave genie two cents on the name. (Which Kim clarified would be shortened to Chi, pronounced ‘shy’)

Here are a few of our favourite reactions to the, erm, interesting name choice.

Speaking in Limerick, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has given further insight into his thoughts on the 8th Amendment.

When asked his opinion on Micheál Martin's announcement earlier this week that he supports a repeal of the 8th, Varadkar reiterated that he believes it is a ‘personal and private issue.’

He continued to say: ‘I've said before that I believe our laws are too restrictive and need to be reformed and need to be liberalised, and of course, that requires a change to the constitution.’

‘But, part of leadership is to listen and I want to listen to public opinion, the citizens assembly, my own party members, and also listen to the debate in the Dáil and Seanad,’ he said.

He also emphasized that the wording of the referendum is vital.

‘I want to actually know what that question is before asking people to say yes or no," he said.

Varadkar is expected to reveal his own views on the 8th at the end of this month.

According to reports, an eight-month-old baby has died after a vehicle veered through a crowded promenade in Brazil.

The incident, which has left 17 others injured, happened along the Copacabana beach at 8.30 pm local time.

Authorities have stated that they do not believe the incident to be terror-related.

Upon arresting the 41-year-old driver, police established he lost control of the vehicle, but was not under the influence of alcohol.

A passenger in the vehicle told authorities she believed the driver had suffered an epileptic seizure, with officials confirming the presence of epileptic medication.

As the country prepares for carnival season, the area along the promenade was filled with more tourists than normal at the time of the incident.

The incident is currently the subject of a police enquiry.

If you have ever watched Mad Men, you'll be aware of the rampant sexism which defined society in the 1950s and 60s.

Luckily, we have come on leaps and bounds since then (though we still have a way to go) and advertisements which were dime a dozen back in the day would never fly now.

Every now and again, we see blogs pop us featuring galleries of outrage-inducing old adverts, and one artist decided to use the oppressive ads to make a statement.

Eli Rezkallah, a 31-year-old visual artist and photographer, took a series of vintage ads and flipped the gender roles within them for Plastik Magazine

The result is a selection of jarring ads called In a Parallel Universe, which had us laughing and scowling all at once.

'Last Thanksgiving, I was visiting my family in New Jersey and I overheard my uncles talk about how women are better off cooking, taking care of the kitchen, and fulfilling “their womanly duties”,’ Eli told The Metro in an interview.

‘Although I know that not all men think that way I was surprised to learn that some still do.'

The ads are available to view here in a gallery on Eli's website, or they can be purchased in a limited edition print format.

It's been three weeks, so if you don't yet consider yourself a die-hard Derry Girls fan, you need to take a long hard look in the mirror.

Having debuted on January 4, the show was an instant hit, but as one corker doesn't make a series, we held our breath and crossed our fingers that the following episodes would retain the same standard as the pilot.

But they didn't. They surpassed it.

From the super-tight script and the laugh-out-loud one-liners to the pop culture references and the classic 90s soundtrack, there seems to be nothing about this show that Twitter isn't here for.

And we'll be honest, if we're not watching Derry Girls, we're reading about it.

The Harry Potter cast have admitted that they essentially gre up on the set of the iconic films.

However, Daniel Radcliffe admits that it could very well have not been him who landed the leading role.

'The thing that I will always say about myself is I was not the most gifted child actor,' he admitted, speaking to The Huffington Post about his role, which he took at age 11.

'When I look at other young actors, like when I look at the kids on Stranger Things or shows like that, I'm just like, 'Holy! My god! How are you doing that?' It's amazing,' he continued.

Radcliffe went on to explain that his sheer passion for the project brought his role to life.

'The thing I think I really was good at, and the thing I had, which was a huge advantage for me, was I just loved it.'

'I loved being on set. I was good at being on set. I loved learning how to be helpful.'

'The greatest thing about being on set is you get to be part of a team.'

'That's the most special thing about it, and you get to feel like with everyone else you are making this thing together, and I loved that feeling straight away. I think that was definitely what made me a great fit for those films.'

We think he's being a little harsh on himself – we couldn't picture anyone lese in the role.

One thing we love about Instagram is the fact that we can creep away on peoples pages to our hearts content, and the only way we could get caught is if we accidentally like a picture (morto).

However, Instagram is changing things up when it comes to it's DM feature.

Until now, people could trade direct messages back and forth without the pressure of having to respond to a DM if they would rather just have a stalk of their favourite pages and then leave the app.

However, those glory days are behind us. Instagram has introduced a 'Last Active' feature, which will allow your DM correspondent to see when you were last online.

So let's say they messaged you five hours ago and you've been 'Active Now' for the past hour and a half? Not ideal for privacy.

This is an attempt by Instagram to build up it's messenger service to rival the likes of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

The feature is automatically enabled, but the good news is, you can turn it off pretty easily

1. Head to the Settings button (beside Edit Profile in your bio).

2. Click in, and start scrolling.

3. Quite close to the bottom, you will find the Show Activity Status toggle.

4. Use the toggle to turn off the feature

However, if you were planning on turning off your status but looking at other people's, Instagram isn't going to let that happen.

If you turn off your feature, you will no longer be able to see anyone else's Last Active status. Cheeky.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the hangover club.

A new service is making the lives of those of us who can't drag ourselves to brunch on Sundays so much easier.

No longer will we who value our sleep be deprived of poached eggs and avocado, not on BreakfastMe.ie's watch.

A post shared by BreakfastMe.ie (@breakfastme.ie) on

Breakfast Me is bringing the brunch and brekkie best from some of Dublin's finest eateries direct to your door.

Operating from 7am to 2pm, the delivery service works like most food deliver services – you simply input your location and it presents you with a variety of restaurants to choose from.

Whether you're in the mood for Herbstreet's eggs royale or a breakfast burrito from The Good Food Store, you may never have to get out of bed for a breakfast ever again.

As well as providing amazing food, Breakfast Me also has a selection of miscellaneous items available to make that Sunday hangover more bearable.

Whether you're after Rizla rolling skins, toilet roll, tampons, sellotape, a phone charger or a nice cold Lucozade, they'll bring it right to you.

The service also delivers snacks such as Tayto, chewing gum, Coke and Malteasers.

If you're someone who hates cooking breakfast on the regular, you can use the service on any given day to avoid liaising with the kitchen appliances.

You can set up a daily or weekly breakfast delivery too if you're feeling extra notions-y.

Our hangover feeds will never be the same.

Taylor Swift takes a lot of heat for simply just being Taylor Swift, but when public attention takes a scary turn and affects those closest to you, it's a reminder of the darker aspects of celebrity life.

Last weekend it was reported that police were trying to warn the pop star about an obsessed fan who claimed he was her boyfriend and needed a gun to 'protect her.'

And now, a stalker that Taylor has taken legal action against before is facing new charges after prosecutors found more emails he sent threatening not just her, but her family as well.

A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift) on

TMZ reported that prosecutors uncovered new emails from a man named Frank Andrew Hoover, who's reportedly sent frightening messages to Taylor and her family before.

These new emails were reportedly sent in batches between May 2015 and October 2016, and are apparently full of frightening language, including death threats.

One threatened to 'end all the Swifts on one day,' referring to them as a 'family of devils.'

The emails are chilling, to say the least.

A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift) on

In 2016, the man was arrested in Austin in Texas, for following Taylor when there was a restraining order already out against him.

His fresh charges now include violating a restraining order and stalking.

While it's harrowing enough dealing with incidents like these yourself – the Shake It Off singer has had at least four stalkers over the past two years – she will at least surround herself with top-notch security, so she undoubtedly feels another level of fear when this affects her family.

If you're baby faced and have a penchant for sipping on energy drinks, you may want to start bringing your I.D to Aldi.

The bargain retailer has announced that it will sop selling energy drinks to people aged under 16.

'We are introducing this age restriction in response to growing concern about the consumption of energy drinks among young people,' Finbar McCarthy, Group Buying Director at Aldi Ireland told Breaking News.

The changes will come into place from March 1.

The decision comes after health campaigners dubbed energy drinks as completely inappropriate fro children thanks to their high sugar and high caffeine content.

One study, carried out by Action on Sugar, found that many energy drinks had more than the RDA of sugar in one beverage.

'Sugars are an unnecessary and unhealthy source of calories, and health experts are becoming ever more concerned about the issues associated directly with excessive sugars consumption,' reads a statement on the Action on Sugar homepage.

'The incidence of obesity and type 2 diabetes, along with the sometimes serious consequences of those diseases, is rapidly increasing.'

'There is a direct link between consumption of sugars and dental caries as well as a possible link between consuming excess sugars and high cholesterol, high blood pressure, some cancers and non-alcoholic liver disease.'

Look, we all know airline food is hardly the most sought-after cuisine on the planet.

And yet, the vast majority of us have tucked in to the cellophane-covered trays on countless occasions while travelling abroad.

You're hungry, you're tired, and you're teetering perilously close to a  food mood, so you tuck into the meal with little regard for the process behind its creation, right?

Well, one flight attendant is here to school you.

Contributing to a Quora thread, Shreyas P gave an insight into mile-high meals, and now we kind of wished we hadn't stumbled across this particular conversation.

"The food on your tray is prepared not in the galley but in the aircraft catering which is often done 12 hours before and even days before the aircraft departure,” Shreyas tells Quora users.

“Now, how many such industries do you know where the hot or cold meal was made days before you consume it?"

She has a point.

So, with timing aside, let's talk ingredients.

"The scrambled egg or the omelette that you just had was not only egg but can be a mix of egg and other substitute." she explained. "That cut fruit which is on your tray still looks fresh and how is that possible when it was cut hours before the departure, have you ever wondered?"

Yes, but frankly, we're often too hungry to care. There, we said it.

Air travel often restricts our palates meaning the food we consume is often seasoned within an inch of its life in order to satisfy hungry passengers.

"[Air pressure] causes our taste buds and sense of smell to go partially numb, compared to on ground. This has major impact on how food tastes and smells," she explains.

"This makes it super bland. So airline catering in recent years has really pumped up the spices, salts, and fats – all to make your mouth happy.”

If you want to show people you know your stuff, do like the cabin crew do and pack your own meals as Shreya says: "A passenger bringing his own food shows a lot of awareness.”
