Good news alert: USI expects voter turnout for young people to be larger than Marriage Equality referendum in 2015!

The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) – which represents 374,000 students across Ireland – has said that the student turnout to vote ‘Yes’ to remove the Eighth Amendment will be the largest youth voter turnout for any referendum in the history of the state.

Speaking ahead of polls opening tomorrow, USI President Michael Kerrigan explained: “Students know that their future is at stake here. We directly registered 26,979 new student voters in the lead up to this referendum to remove the Eighth Amendment, and we know from our two week roadshow on campuses that students are united on the issue, and will be voting ‘Yes’ for a more caring and compassionate Ireland.”

“Students’ Unions have held referendums on campus on the Eighth Amendment, and up to 92% of students across campuses voted ‘Yes’ for their Students’ Union to campaign to remove the Eighth Amendment.

"We’re expecting student turnout to be bigger than the Marriage Equality vote in 2015. With almost 125,000 new voters on the register, we expect the majority to be first time young voters.”

USI is the national representative body for the 374,000 students in third level education on the Island of Ireland, and is a member of the national civil society campaign, Together For Yes.

USI has been campaigning for the decriminalisation of abortion in Ireland since 1979. In 2015, USI mobilised students to vote in Marriage Equality seeing the largest youth voter turnout for any vote in the history of the state.

Use your vote tomorrow guys. The women of Ireland deserve better.

Tomorrow, Ireland will hold a referendum on whether or not to repeal the eighth amendment of the constitution.

A YES vote will mean that that the amendment will be repealed, and Ireland's archaic abortion laws will be changed.

A NO vote will change nothing, and 12 women every day will still be forced to leave Ireland to source illegal abortions.

For me, it is a simple choice, and I will be voting YES, for the women of Ireland. My friends, my future children and grandchildren.

The exportation of our problems stops here.

And as a YES voter, I am far from alone.

Thousands of people are getting on planes and boats (irony is not lost on me) to travel home to vote in this history-making referendum.

These people are taking to social media to share their stories, using the hashtag #HomeToVote – and honestly, I'm emotional.

It's incredibly heartwarming to see so many Irish people making a crucial journey for the women of their nation.

Here are some of the best tweets we've seen:

A number of celerities including Kate Nash and Courteney Cox have come out to publicly support the Yes side of the referendum to repeal the 8th amendment to the Irish constitution.

Last night, two more fierce, feminist singers put their names to the debate.

Lily Allen took to Twitter to post a simple #repelathe8th hastag to her post.

There was some confusion in the comments section, with some members of her international following being confused by the statement.

'What does that men then,' wrote one, before being infomred about Ireland's abortion laws, which have been described by many the publication as some of the most restrictive in the world.

Disney movies were a staple part of my childhood, and there was one in particular that made me dream of life under the sea. The Little Mermaid has always been one of my favourite Disney movies with its catchy soundtrack, the colourful setting, and Ariel- the determined and caring mermaid.

The original tale comes from 1837 when Hans Christian Andersen penned a gripping fairytale about a young mermaid who is willing to give up everything for the man she loves.

Fast forward to 2018 and Louise O’Neill has released her own adaption of the classic fairytale. Her twist on The Little Mermaid takes place under the waters of the Irish coast. We meet the teenage mermaid Gaia, who dreams of escaping to the surface, away from the clutches of her horrid father.

A post shared by Kat (@katoconnorr) on

The tale is similar to the Disney classic with Gaia falling for the handsome human boy and decides to give up her tail for legs, however, what West-Cork writer O’Neill does is trickle the tale with meaningful feminist messages.

It’s the fairytale every young woman needs to read. Gaia’s naivety shows us just how easily love can fool us. As kids, we fell for the dashing Prince Eric, but the male protagonist in this story will leave you feeling seasick.

The Surface Breaks is dark and will make you feel uneasy at times, but that discomfort is necessary because it shines a light on the horrid issues women have to deal with today, including sexual assault and being disrespected solely because of our gender.

This retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's story is a thrilling read, and the powerful ending will leave you gasping for air

The Surface Breaks published by Scholastic is available for €12.99 at Dubray.

For some parents, their little ones wait a long time to leave the nest. A very long time.

A judge ruled on May 22 that 30-year-old Michael Rotondo has to leave his parents' home in the Syracuse, New York area after their efforts over the last several months to have him move out.

Mark and Christina Rotondo had given their son five written notices regarding the matter, CNN affiliate WSTM reports. They'd even offered him money to help him in his accommodation search.

The first, dated February 2, read, "After a discussion with your Mother, we have decided you must leave this house immediately. You have 14 days to vacate. You will not be allowed to return. We will take whatever actions are necessary to enforce this decision."

A second note, dated February 13, said the 30-year-old was 'hereby evicted' and had to move out by March 15.

Five days later, Michael's parents wrote him a note offering him $1,100 to help him find a new home, as well as advice for moving out and raising the funds for his new place.

The fourth notice, from March 5, observed that 'So far we have seen no indication that you are preparing to leave'.

"Be aware that we will take any appropriate actions necessary to make sure you leave the house as demanded," the note continued.

The fifth note dated March 30 offered some solutions for a problem pertaining to Michael's car, which was left at his mum and dad's home.

Christina and Mark were told that because Michael is a relative, they could only evict him through ejectment proceeding, according to filings by the couple.

The 30-year-old asked for his parents' request to be dismissed, claiming that he 'has never been expected to contribute to household expenses, or assisted with chores and the maintenance of the premises, and claims that this is simply a component of his living agreement'.

Michael also said that he should have been given six-months notice. The judge ordered in his parents' favour, though, saying that Michael must move out of his parents' house.

Of course, we are aware that there are many reasons why grown children would live at home with their parents, from the rising cost of housing to mental or physical disabilities. It's not uncommon for adults to stay in the family home these days.

For Christina and Mark, though, it seems they are ready to be empty-nesters, and the court agrees.

One of Irelands' most esteemed and distinctive makeup artists Aimee Connolly is guiding the makeup brushes of future creatives with the establishment of her makeup school.

Aimee, know for her distinctively fresh, pared-back, softly contoured makeup style in a sea of Instagram makeup trends has developed Sculpted: The Academy to champion upcoming makeup artists, and provide them with the tools and qualifications they need to work in the makeup industry on a global scale.

With her experience with bridal and TV makeup, as well as the development of her own makeup range, Aimee is a glowing example of an Irish woman building her business from the ground up.

'Funnily enough, I actually got into makeup after doing work experience with Benefit Cosmetics, so I kind of fell into it just before I was 16 because I didn’t have any work experience sorted,' she told SHEmazing.

'Then, I was offered a job in Urban Decay so I worked every weekend for three years, went on to MAC, and then I started working for myself but I was only ever doing it part time, much like when I was still in school.

So I started working for myself just before my Erasmus when I was 20, but then when I came back I just stayed working for myself, and when I did graduate from university the business was busy enough to go full time.'

From her fabulous work on a range of clients, Aimee was able to pour her expertise into designing products for the women she worked on in her Sculpted by Aimee range.

'It’s a mixture of having worked on so many people over the years be it weddings or TV and all that, and having worked in the industry for six years, I was very used to working with products, I saw what was lacking and knew exactly what I wanted and what my clientele wanted, and that’s really where Sculpted came from.'

'The reason why I went for the face products initially is because I used to love how simple it was to make someone look amazing, and people I think used to think that there was a lot more layers to contouring then there actually was. So they would say oh I could tell you did her makeup by the way her cheeks are, or how many layers of crèmes do you have on her to get that sculpted effect – and then I thought how good it would be to have a handy kit that’s more towards the easy approach to contouring and not the full cream contour.'

And with three new products launching this year, Sculpted by Aimee has no signs of slowing down.

After listening to the needs of her clients, Aimee turned her attention to the needs of the Irish makeup industry, and spotted a demand for a professional makeup academy that catered to beginners, long-term makeup artists and gals looking to up their personal makeup game.

Hence, Sculpted: The Academy came to fruition, along with it's VTCT World Class Qualification offering.

'I have big plans for the academy to change the structure of how we learn these things,' she said.

'I think the beauty industry in Ireland is so successful, which is great, and there's so much information online where you can get a step-by-step (tutorial) at the drop of a hat, but I think with that, and with the desire of girls who see the lifestyle of these online makeup artists, they want to be that so I think the competitive nature is huge beachside there's such an influx of artists.'

'It's a good thing because it shows that there's work for everybody but at the same time it does make it very competitive.'

Amy stresses that there is no 'right or wrong' when it comes to makeup artistry, but feels that there can be a pressure to engage in a certain category of makeup that is popular online.

'There's a huge natural reaction to do a very heavy Instagram look because people seem to have a lot of followers along that trend, but my biggest advice is to stay true to what your about and what your style is, because as much as it may seem like 'oh I should do that because everyone has those followers' you'll build yourself up as a brand with a different look if that's your thing.'

For those who do want to maintain an online following? Aimee advises two things – good quality photos and consistent work.

Whether you're a MUA who wants to get proper training, a gang of girls looking for a fun makeup workshop, or you're in search of a professional one-on-one theory and practical mentor class, The Academy offers it all under the same roof.

Do you find that no matter how often you clean your makeup brushes, they're never really THAT clean?

Yeah same.

I've bought all the contraptions, used various types of washes, and have even blow dried my brushes.

And yet, they're always dirty. No matter what.

So when I saw a Reddit user offering a solution to my beauty woes, I was intrigued.

Pink And Gold Professional Cosmetic Makeup Brush Set -SheIn(Sheinside)

The user, which goes by the name of SuperiorPeach, shared some sweet knowledge about how to clean your makeup brushes.

"People are going to be horrified by this, but I put my brushes in the washing machine."

"I pre-soak them in a soapy solution to start the product breaking down, put them in a pillowcase, tie it shut and wash them all at once on a warm/delicate/no spin cycle. They come out spotless and I haven't had one fall apart yet."

She went on to explain that she tends to place the brushes in the wash with a few towels, so none of them get hurt.

We get that girl, makeup brushes are PRICEY.

Anyway, this is something I plan on trying ASAP, so I'll let you know how I get on.

It has been revealed that the BreastCheck screening programme will undergo an examination following the CervicalCheck controversy of the past months.

The Health Committee have expressed their concerns and believe that examining all screening programmes is an essential move.

The committee will meet with officials from the National Cancer Screening Service. It is believed that they will discuss the screening programme, and how to regain the public’s trust.

Understandably, many women are concerned about the countries' screening programmes after the CervicalCheck controversy, where there was a delay in diagnosing over 200 cervical cancer cases.

The committee is focused on regaining the public’s trust. Dr. Michael Harty, who is the chairperson of the committee said he hopes examining all screening programmes will help reassure the public.

He said: "We are concerned that the difficulties in communication that arose in CervicalCheck may also be replicated in the other screening services, so we want to look at BreastCheck in that regard.”

They will ensure that the BreastCheck programme is of the best and highest international standards.

He explained that breast cancer is more common than cervical cancer, so checking this screening programme is a main priority for the committee.

BreastCheck invite women aged between 50 and 69 to attend a mammogram every two years.
