Rising college fees are acting as a barrier for families who want their children to progress to third level education, says Labour Senator, Aodhán Ó Ríordáin, who has slated the proposed introduction of student loans.

A 2016 report found a funding gap of €5.5 billion over the next 15 years in Irish third-level education, and thus recommended the introduction of a deferred payment scheme.

However, Aodhán Ó Ríordáin is urging the Government not to go forward with these plans and will table a motion on the issue tomorrow.

He said: "Fundamentally, education should be something that the tax payer provides."

"We have any amount of people who are eager to get into third level but the fees and system is still a barrier for many other people and working families."

"I think a situation where a burden of loans that has to be re-paid over a number of years would deter people."

Meanwhile, the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) are calling on the Government to decrease third-level fees by at least €250 in Budget '18.

College fees have risen dramatically over the past ten years and Micheal Kerrigan, USI President, wants the government to finally address the spiralling costs.

He said: "So what we are proposing for Budget 2018 is a minimum of €250 reduction. We have seen a 363% increase in the student contribution since 2008, which is a massive rise.

"There is no fee in the country that has gone up anywhere close to that much in the last 10 years."

A three-year-old boy has died after he was found with suspected stab wounds in a Dublin apartment yesterday evening.

Gardaí arrived at the scene at the apartment in the Poddle Park area of Kimmage at around 7:00pm, where the boy was announced dead.

His mother, a woman in her early 40s, was also found injured downstairs and was taken to St. James' Hospital, where she is reportedly undergoing surgery.

It is believed that she also received a number of knife injuries and Gardaí have described her condition as serious.

Both the child and his mother are said to be Iranian and it's thought she works in a Dublin hospital.

Gardaí have launched an inquiry into the incident and are describing it as a homicide investigation.

An incident room has been established at Crumlin Garda Station and officers are conducting door-to-door inquiries also.

While we may have an aging population, the Republic of Ireland’s birth rate is quite literally off the charts.

This is according to new statistics released this week by Eurostat, which reveal that Ireland had the highest birth rate of any member of the European Union last year.

The new figures show that Ireland recorded 63,900 live births in 2016, which equates to 13.5 per every 1,000 inhabitants.

To put those figures into context, the average birth rate among European Union member states came in at 10 births per every 1,000 inhabitants – so we were head and shoulders above the average last year.

We also recorded the lowest death rates of 2016, sharing the position with our EU neighbour, Cyprus.

Overall, Ireland’s population is said to have increased by more than 50,000 last year, while a whopping 5.1 million babies were born throughout the European Union.

We've heard it time and time again since we were kids.

It's been in movies, TV shows, magazines, and now even made into memes.

Yep, it's The Friend Zone.

One writer saw a series of pictures shared on Twitter with the caption, "These dudes were the definition of being in the friend zone."

It shows pictures of friends in cartoons, such as Kim and Ron in Kim Possible and Sheen and Libby in Jimmy Neutron.

Well, David Slack, an animations writer has called out the term on Twitter, and he does it SO well:

So, next time anyone utters the words 'friend zone', just show them this.

If you're about to travel home, avoid the M50 at all costs.

On a good day it's like a car park, but this evening, two separate incidents have taken place, blocking several lanes on the motorway.

On the M50 Northbound, traffic is down to one lane following a car crash.

The collision happened just after the J6 Blanchardstown turn off. Major delays have also been reported as tailbacks occur towards the J7 Lucan turn-off and J9 Red Cow turn-off.

Meanwhile, traffic is also slow on the M1, after a truck lost its load.

According to M50 Dublin Traffic Twitter account, "A truck has shed it's load southbound between J5 Balbriggan and J4 Donabate blocking the middle lane.

"Emergency services on route. Caution advised."

There are also reports of train services being delayed through Connolly Station after a truck ran into Amein's Street Bridge.

Be careful out there.

CABS ARE HERE!

Yep, it's looking like Jersey Shore is getting a reunion… and we're actually quite excited about it.

It was the first piece of reality TV we all really got into, and the drama in the Jersey Shore house was second to none.

Well, according to The Asbury Park Press, cast members Snooki, JWoww, Sammi and Deena were all seen filming over the weekend.

“They were here for a couple hours and had dinner and played boardwalk games,” Toby Wolf, marketing director of the Jersey Shore Boardwalk confirmed.

This evening, Snooki even tweeted a poll asking "Are we doing a Jersey Shore reunion?"

The answers she gave are, "F*CK YAS," "Please disappear," and "You're all old."

(Ofc, we voted F*CK YAS).

They gals weren't shy about posting their reunion on social media either, with Snooki, Deena and Mike the Situation sharing photos on their social media pages.

A new report has found that although over 50 per cent of medical graduates are female, a mere 7 per cent of consultant surgeons are women.

Research by Royal College of Surgeons (RCSI) has found that a lack of information and support during and after pregnancy could prevent women from progressing in the career.

The RCSI is now aiming to improve these support networks in order to encourage more women to consider careers as surgeons.

Dr Avril Hutch Head of the RCSI Equality and Diversity Unit said: "We want to ensure that surgery is an attractive career, that there's mentorship programmes for trainees, that there's adequate support for pregnant trainees, and we also want to ensure that there's opportunities for fellowships."

She added, "When they get to their 30s, it's times when they are considering having families and things like that, and also it's a very competitive process to become a consultant surgeon, and our trainees are well equipped to do that, but we have to make sure that they have the resources to get to that top level."

The RSCI has made a total of 25 recommendations including help for students who are parents, advice on work-life balance and support for training fellowships abroad.

"When they're in medical school, if they don't encounter female surgical academics, it's quite hard for them to envisage a world in which they might be successful as a surgeon," she said.

"And so sometimes they simply opt out of even considering surgery as a career and that's something we need to work on."
