Saturday Night Live is preparing for an Irish takeover with Saoirse Ronan and U2 both set to appear on the legendary US sketch show.

The programme, which sees a new guest host take over every week, announced last night that the 23-year-old Irish actress would present the December 2 edition, with U2 as her musical guests.

SNL is notorious for its short sketches that offer a comedic look into contemporary culture and America's political landscape.

Its large and varying cast comprises of some of Hollywood's top talents including Will Ferrell, Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig, Jane Curtin, John Belushi, Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray and Mike Myers.

The coveted role will come as a welcome break for Saoirse who has been busy promoting her latest film Ladybird.

The comedy-drama has earned huge praise from critics so far, boasting a perfect 100 per cent score on review website Rotten Tomatoes.

And although the film will not hit Irish cinemas until February of the next year, Saoirse's performance has already sparked Oscar buzz ahead of the 2018 award season.

Fingers crossed it's third time lucky to the two-time Academy Award nominee.

Stop everything!

Love Actually is coming to Netflix Ireland on December 14 and our Christmas streaming schedule just got a whole lot better.

The streaming service made the announcement on Twitter this morning with a playful re-working of one the film's best-loved scenes.

You know the one – Andrew Lincoln, Kiera Knightly, cue cards, romance…

Only this time the cards read: "Every Christmas, we get the same question."

Followed by a number of tweets @netflix begging for the film to be made available on the service.

“We hear you!”, the announcement finishes.

“And we just wanted to say Love Actually is coming to Netflix UK and Ireland. Merry Christmas.”

Originally released in 2003, the Richard Curtis film tells ten interweaving stories of love around the festive season, and has cemented itself as a holiday tradition in many households across the country.

Best. Christmas. Ever.

As we enter the last few weeks of 2017, Twitter users across the globe are taking some time to reflect on the year that was.

Between political tensions, never-ending Brexit negotiations and an unprecedented exposé on Hollywood's sexual harassment culture, it's safe to say that 2017 will go down in history for all the wrong reasons.

Using the #2017In4Words hashtag, people have been sharing some thoughts on subjects such as Trump's presidency, gun control and women's rights – in what has proved to be one of the most poignant social media trends of the year so far.

However, it wasn't all doom and gloom, with many Twitter using choosing to take a more comedic approach to the events that unfolded over the last 11 months.

Here's some of our favourite posts.

Lena Dunham is facing criticism for standing behind Girls producer and writer Murray Miller.

According to The Wrap, actress Aurora Perrineau claimed that Miller raped her in 2012, when she was just 17 years old

'At some point, I woke up in Murray’s bed naked,' she said, after consuming alcohol with Murray and some friends.

'He was on top of me having sexual intercourse with me. At no time did I consent to any sexual contact with Murray.'

Lena Dunham, who has spoken out with words of compassion for sexual assault victims previously,

'While our first instinct is to listen to every woman’s story, our insider knowledge of Murray’s situation makes us confident that sadly this accusation is one of the 3pc of assault cases that are misreported every year,' a spokesperson for Lena Dunham told The Wrap.

'It is a true shame to add to that number, as outside of Hollywood women still struggle to be believed.'

'We stand by Murray and this is all we’ll be saying about this issue.'

Twitter is not too happy with Lena's response to the allegations:

A passenger on New York's subway claims that she was attacked by a man after she asked him to stop manspreading.

Manspreading – when a man takes up as much room as humanly possible by spreading their legs wide open – is generally now considered to be a public transport faux pas if it encroaches on another passengers space.

Sam Saia said that she was attacked by a man on the underground train when she asked him to move over.

'He proceeded to press me against the wall and manspread excessively,' she told her Twitter followers, after detailing how the stranger had sat beside her on the tram.

When she asked him to move over, he began to verbally assault her,

'When I asked him to give me room, he yelled "b**** you aint nothing! I've raped white b****** like you, you f****** c***,' she alleges.

She then put her earphones in to ignore his tirade, which made the man more aggressive and launch a physical attack.

Saia was punched by them man and had her head bashed into the wall. She uploaded photos of her injuries to Twitter.

A male passenger on the train leapt to her defence, and made the attacker get off the train at the next stop.

Part of the incident was caught on camera by another commuter.

Initially, Saia told The Sun that she was given the runaround by the authorities when she attempted to report the incident.

However, since her story has gone viral, she has been contacted by the police who want to investigate the assault.

You know the holidays are coming when McDonalds rolls out their Christmas menu.

Focusing on winter warming ingredients, the fast food brand have introduced two new burger concepts bursting ith festive flavour.

First up is the Spicy Chicken Winter Melt, which sees two juicy chicken selects smothered with roasted red pepper sauce and cheese.

Second, McD's have created the Beef Winter Warmer, which sees beef, bacon, cheese and veg come together under a snowflake burger bun.

For the veggies in our midst, there are two meat-free options (however, vegans will have to sit this one out).

Replacing the classic mozzarella dippers are Festive Cheese Melt Dippers. Excuse us while we wipe the drool from our chins.

Rather than being stuffed with melted mozzarella, these bites are packet with fried camembert cheese and serves with a festive tomato dip. Delightful .

Back on the menu for a second year is the coveted Terry's Chocolate Orange McFlurry

A cult menu item, we've been craving the orange and chocolate McFlurry all year.
