Monthly Archives: April 2017

It’s been five years since one of the most high-profile, fleeting love affairs of our time ended, and now Harry Styles is finally talking about his relationship with Taylor Swift.

The relationship may have been brief, but it did inspire some of Taylor’s most recent hits, most notably, the appropriately named, Style and Out of the Woods.

The pair debuted their romance during a walk through New York’s central park and in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Harry spoke about that day for the first time.

"I think: Relationships are hard, at any age," he said. "And adding in that you don't really understand exactly how it works when you're 18, trying to navigate all that stuff didn't make it easier."

‘’I mean, you're a little bit awkward to begin with. You're on a date with someone you really like. It should be that simple, right?"

"It was a learning experience for sure. But at the heart of it – I just wanted it to be a normal date."

Harry refused to speculate over whether he was the subject of certain songs, but he did insist that Taylor is right to put her personal experience into her songwriting.

"I mean, I don't know if they're about me or not … But the issue is, she's so good, they're bloody everywhere. I write from my experiences; everyone does that.’’

‘’I'm lucky if everything we went through helped create those songs. That's what hits your heart. That's the stuff that's hardest to say, and it's the stuff I talk least about. That's the part that's about the two people. I'm never going to tell anybody everything."

So, did Harry like the song allegedly written about him? ‘’Yes and No’’ he told Rolling Stone. ‘’She doesn't need me to tell her they're great. They're great songs…It's the most amazing unspoken dialogue ever."

Not naming any names, Harry also admitted that his new album is heavily influenced by an ex of his:

"She's a huge part of the album. Sometimes you want to tip the hat, and sometimes you just want to give them the whole cap…and hope they know it's just for them."

Who could it be?

We had a little look over on its website and already have our eyes on its cute fairy lights, fire pits and quirky tableware.

You know those evenings where all you want to do is jump into your PJs, throw on the TV series you're bingeing on and just order in pizza?

Simply put, the urge to interact with your fave TV characters trumps the urge to talk to your personal trainer at the gym.

Yep, it happens to a lot of us – but it turns out that doing this doesn't make us lazy; it just means were smart.

Well, kinda.

The Journal of Health Psychology found some interesting correlations between people who use their brains a lot, and their exercise habits.

Image result for im too tired gif

Those who use their brains a lot in work, or love a good cognitive activity, are more likely to spend their off-time lounging around the house than going on a 5km run.

The study measured the candidate's "tendency to engage in and enjoy effortful cognitive endeavours," and found that we don't want to exercise because our brains sometimes need a bit of time off.

So long story short; if you just want to stay in bed all day, you're not actually being 'lazy', you're just resting your body so your brain can work harder.

Now, obviously you can't take the p*ss with this new description of 'lazy', so here are a few ways how to motivate yourself to exercise:

1. Be competitive

Even if being competitive isn't your thang, it's a great motivator for exercise.

Whether you compete against your BFF, your brother or some unknown person at the gym; trying to keep up with another person will set you on the right track.

2. Plan it out

Yes, we know the struggle is real when you get home from work and just want to flop onto the sofa.

But work out a tactical plan – this could be going to a gym right beside your office straight after work or doing a lunchtime workout session.

3. Make it social

If you hate just being on your own and having to contend with yourself while running on a treadmill for 40 minutes, then try find a group to exercise with.

The social interaction will make your workout go by much faster and having a common goal with your group will help you keep on top of your regime.

It was revealed today that ownership of the new €300 million National Maternity Hospital will be given to religious order The Sisters Of Charity, according to The Irish Times.

The order will be awarded responsibility for the new state-funded facility, which will be built near Elm Park in South Dublin.

The Sisters of Charity was one order of many who were ordered by the Ryan commission investigation to pay €5m to the state redress scheme for victims of institutional abuse in the Magdalene Laundries.

The organisation still owes €3m of the sum, which was agreed upon in 2002.

In 2013, four religious congregations including The Sisters of Charity, which were associated with Magdalene laundries, announced that they would not be making any further payments redress scheme for women who had been in the laundries, according to The Irish Times.

Irish citizens have taken to Twitter to express their outrage against the order having "sole ownership" of the new maternity hospital.

"A state-funded hospital to be given to Sisters of Charity. The lack of respect of those who suffered is appalling," said one.

"Sisters of Charity to be 'sole owner' of National Maternity Hospital? What year is this? Separate church & state," said another.

A statement from the Department of Health says that the hospital will not prescribe to any religious distinction.

"It is correct that the land on which the new maternity hospital will be built is owned by the St. Vincent’s Healthcare Group and that the Sisters of Charity are a major shareholder in the St. Vincent’s Healthcare Group," reads the statement.

"The identity and ethos of the current NMH will be retained."

"The new company will have clinical and operational independence in the provision of maternity, gynaecology and neonatal services, without religious, ethnic or other distinction, as well as financial and budgetary independence."

OK, so being fired is one of the things we fear most in life – but it's not the end of the world.

In most cases, it's a chance to rethink the road you want to take in your career, and sort out your priorities.

Career consultant, Sherridan Hughes, spoke to Marie Claire about what to expect and how to come out on the brighter side of being sacked.

businessman, client, coaching

Start asking yourself questions

Sherridan first urges you to ask the question 'was it really my fault?'

"Was there something else going on e.g. cutbacks were necessary, or perhaps you were simply made the scapegoat for someone else’s failings?"

However, if you honestly feel like you just weren't up for the job, then comes the tough questions.

"What were you weak at? What did you do less well? Could you have asked for help sooner?

"Could you have asked for training, researched online or put yourself through a course? Is that worth doing now?"

Asking yourself these questions will help you figure out whether you want to go back into the same type of work, or look into a different area.

We all know that even if we love our jobs, sometimes going into the office can be an absolute drag.

However, that's completely different from dreading the work you do everyday, which brings Sherridan to her next question – "Were you even right for the job?

"Did you enjoy the work and feel that it was playing to your strengths or did you feel out of your depth and stressed, or alternatively, bored and demotivated?"

blur, business, close-up

Now it's time to think positive

If the job wasn't suited to you, or you felt out of your depth, then it's probably best that you are out.

Think of this as your lucky escape and your chance to find something better suited to you.

"Do not be ashamed or embarrassed. It’s best to make light of it and try to laugh it off with friends and family.

"No one is allowed to give a bad reference; they should just write ‘ this person was employed as X from X to Y dates'.

"Let go of resentment and bitterness because it will eat you up and you do not want them to have beaten you. Determine to show them what they have lost!"

White tablet and cup of coffee

Be prepared for the next job you walk into

First of all, don't doubt yourself. Once you've thought everything through and know what your next step is, don't be shy when applying for new jobs.

But Sherridan warns that you might have to put a spin on it when being interviewed for another role.

"You cannot admit that you were fired because few employers will want to risk giving you a try, even if appreciating your honesty.

"Try to think of a reason why you have left (perhaps with no job to go to). If you change location, role, organisation or career, this should be easier to explain."

So, instead of saying out straight that you were fired, you could say that you had aspirations for a new, better suited role.

"You could also complete a project or take a gap activity to cover your tracks," Sherridan explains.

In the week following Ed Sheeran's two sell-out shows at Dublin's 3Arena, the singer has revealed that he is set to appear on the new series of BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs next month.

The iconic radio show was first broadcast in January 1942 and has been a firm favourite with listeners ever since.

Each week a guest, dubbed the ‘castaway’, is asked to choose eight recordings they would want to have with them if they were stranded on a desert island.

The guest then discusses their picks with presenter, Kirsty Young.

According to NME, Ed will also choose a book and a luxury item to take to the fictional island.

He follows the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Kylie Minogue and Michael Bublé who have all previously been guests on the show.

The Galway Girl singer has already recorded his episode which is due to air on Sunday, May 7 at 11.15am, and we can't wait to hear what he picks.

Ah Easter, the time of excessive eating and Good Friday house parties.

Week three of the 30 day No Spending Challenge is underway, and honestly?

I cannot wait to be released from my prison of personal finance.

In case you are wondering why in the name of God anyone would try to survive without two cents to rub together by choice, here's a bit of background.

I am embarking on the 30 Day No Spending Challenge (you can see how I prepared for it here), and I am officially over it.

The 30 Day No Spending Challenge focuses on benefiting your bank balance by sticking to a tight budget for four weeks.

Most adventurers into this monetary management challenge stick to a budget of about €50.00 a week, to spend on groceries, transport and socialising, but essentials like rent and utilities are excluded.

After all, it's hard enough to get a house these days without potentially pissing of your landlord by not coughing up that "very reasonable, considering the area," sum of monthly rent.

€50.00 is definitely a sorry sum to try to get by on for the week, but after you minus my travel expenses, I'm left with €20.00 to spend.

This week, Easter was looming, and being in possession of an assortment of younger siblings, chocolate had to be purchased to satiate the Lent-mad masses.

The challenge does allow you to put an event or two aside that you have already committed to ahead of the challenge, during which you can allocate yourself a budget to spend during the event outside of your chaste weekly allowance, and Easter was my time to shine.

A post shared by Jodie (@paperpipit) on

I gave myself an egg allowance of sorts, and splashed out on fancy confectionery items for my immediate family, as well as a bottle of gin for myself in preparation for the Good Friday madness.

In order to minimise my spending, I split the cost of the gin, tonic and limes with a friend.

It was definitely a spending savvy move, but it did remind me of my late teens, where pocket money would be pooled between friends to purchase a large bottle of blue alco-pop to be consumed with haste in some drizzly field.

Though the beverage was an expense, my guilt was minimised by the fact that it was a house party rather than a night out, so the expenditure was dramatically lower than it could have been.

While I did not go outside my egg budget, I counted on the Bank of Mum and Dad to get my train ticket back to my home county of Galway for the family festivities.

I have been in the process of detangling my finances from my parents for a number of years, which is probably the same as most young twenty-somethings, and now all that's left is my phone bill.

Getting kicked off the family phone plan will truly be the moment the cord gets clamped, but the Bank of Mum and Dad does remain open for occasional necessities like this pilgrimage to Galway.

It is completely cheating on the challenge to allow other people to buy you something, but after splurging on eggs and gin, I couldn't get any more in the red than I already was.

After the short but sweet visit, I returned to Dublin to be greeted with bare cupboards, a svelte LeapCard balance and limited plan for what I intend to spend my twenty quid on this week.

I'm sure there's some way to conjure some broken, leftover Easter eggs into three square meals a day, right?

Rock icons Queen will take to the stage in Dublin's 3Arena later this year.

The band, who will be joined by alternative musician Adam Lambert for the European tour, are hitting Dublin on November 25.

For their brand new European tour, the band are performing an entirely new show with epic production value.

Expect to hear We Will Rock You and We Are the Champions, as the band ring in the 40th anniversary of their biggest-selling studio album, News of the World.

According to MCD, Queen drummer and co-founder Roger Taylor says the 2017 tour “will look entirely different to the show we took around before.

"Production has really changed a lot, the things you can do now, you have a much broader palette, the technology has really come along."

"But we don’t use it all. We don’t play to click track. It’s 100 per cent live. We’re planning on doing stuff we either haven’t done before or haven’t done for a long time."

"We started as an albums band, that’s what we were. The fact that we had hits was just a byproduct.”

Tickets for this massive event will be priced from €87 including booking fee, and will be on sale from 9am Friday 21 April via Ticketmaster.
