The stars who worked with Alan Rickman for one of his most memorable roles, Harry Potter's Professor Snape, were among the first to share their tributes yesterday.

Alan's family confirmed the actor had passed away from cancer at the age of 69, after a battle with the disease that he had kept a secret from the public.

One of the most beautiful tributes we've seen so far comes from Evanna Lynch, the Irish actress who played Luna Lovegood in the seven films.

Taking to Facebook last night, the Louth native admitted that she gave Alan a "wide berth" during her years working on the Harry Potter franchise, but finally got to know him better during a chance meeting some time later.

"Truthfully, I was terrified of him as Snape and throughout the course of the films," she explained.

"I assumed he WAS Snape and made myself small whenever he went gliding past in those big, shadowy black robes.

I don't have many stories to share about Alan Rickman because, truthfully, I was terrified of him as Snape and…

"It wasn't until a few years later that I had the chance to meet Alan as himself. It was at a charity dinner and our nameplates were next to each other."

After getting over her nerves, Evanna explained how she took her seat and was pleasantly surprised by Alan's kindness towards her.

"I sat down and much to my shock he greeted me warmly and by name. My real name!

"The conversation got round to acting quickly and at the time I was stressing about the pressure I felt to already be a successful actress and that I'd run out of time to make mistakes.

"He said not to worry about getting 'there' and instead to focus on feeding my soul and following my heart from place to place."

The actress goes on to explain how the conversation stuck with her for a long time afterward.

"After that meeting I thought about him a lot and what a truly lovely, kind, generous person he was.

"For someone as established, wise and revered as he, the greatest gift you can give someone is your full attention and presence in the moment.

"Please honour his memory and what he gave us by talking about and sharing stories and continuing to celebrate his legacy so then he will be here, as we like to say, 'Always'."

As we revel in the success of Irish individuals nominated for Academy Awards this year, the ceremony is once again being criticised for it's lack of diversity in nominations.

The Oscars have notoriously been considered as a conservative operation with many perceiving that predictable films and performers are nominated and take home the awards every year.

This year is no different as industry insiders and critics took to social media to lament the lack of diversity in this year's nominations.

"Why did the Oscars announce all the white nominees first?" said Ricky Gervais sarcastically to his 10.5 million Twitter followers yesterday.

The nominations also prompted the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag to resurface as spectators noted that no black directors or actors appeared in the top categories.

"It's actually worse than last year. Best Documentary and Best Original Screenplay. That's it," tweeted April Reign, the original creator of the popular hashtag.

Perhaps the criticisms facing the ceremony are unsurprising when considering the makeup of the Academy itself whose members vote on who is to take home each award.

A survey conducted in 2012 revealed that of the five thousand members of the prestigious organisation, over ninety per cent were Caucasian and over fifty per cent were over the age of sixty.

Glaring omissions from the nominations this year are considered to be Idris Elba for Beasts of No Nation, Will Smith for his work in the film, Concussion as well as the cast of the boxing film, Creed.

However, most people were enraged by the critically acclaimed biopic Straight Outta Compton only receiving one nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

Many noted that the film, directed by F. Gary Grey, was only nominated for it's white script writers rather than the efforts of the cast, director or crew.

And even Cheryl Isaac, president of the Academy, has picked up on this.

"I really was disappointed. Fabulous movie, fabulous movie," said Cheryl to the Associated Press.

"What is important is that this entire conversation of diversity is here and we are talking about it. It is an industry-wide situation and we need to continue this conversation."

If you happened to be tuned in to Celebrity Big Brother last night, you would have been treated to ten minutes of reality star Megan McKenna losing it over…. well, we haven't quite figured out what she got so worked up about.

The 23-year-old, who became notorious for her outbursts of rage on MTV's Ex on the Beach, seems to become a different person when she has a few drinks on her.

Megan started by calling out fellow housemate, John Partridge as "fake" before turning to attack Tiffany Pollard who had been laughing at the outburst.

It was revealed following the show in an exclusive clip shown on Big Brother's Bit on the Side with Rylan Clark, that Megan received a formal warning from Big Brother.

"Megan, Big Brother has given you a formal warning," she was told in the diary after her outburst.

"If you repeat this behaviour and language again, Big Brother may have no option but to remove you from the house."

Viewers were outraged by Megan's behaviour and in particular, by her comments made about Tiffany Pollard.

Megan called the reality star a "ghetto c**t" which viewers felt was unforgivingly racist.

And it seems that Megan's ex-boyfriend Jordan is not surprised by the antics as he took to Twitter to suggest that he had to deal with these outbursts a lot.

Yeah, Jordan, we literally don't know how you did it.

Rene Angélil, the husband of Canadian singer Celine Dion, 47, passed away last night following a lengthy battle with throat cancer.

The family confirmed the passing of Rene at their Las Vegas home at the age of 73.

It's been an amazing day for Irish film after a slew of Oscar nominations for both Room and Brooklyn, and actress Saoirse Ronan says the whole experience has been a "dream."

The Carlow native scooped a Best Actress nomination today for her role as Eilis in Brooklyn, after missing out on a Golden Globe win last Sunday night.

"When we made Brooklyn, we had no idea of what was to come," the 21-year-old said in a statement this evening.

"It is the most personal film I have ever done, the hardest one too. I am honoured to represent this film with my friends – John, Nick, Finola, Yves, Colm, Amanda.

"This has all been a dream. To see how the film has been embraced has been heartwarming.

"Thank you so very much to The Academy – you are a group of people I respect greatly and to be recognised by you means so much."

Despite not being able to pronounce her name, US audiences have definitely fallen for Saoirse's charm in recent months, with a host of appearances on US chat shows during the press circuit for Brooklyn.

Just last night she gave Stephen Colbert a crash course in Irish names, from Tadhg to Caoimhe:

Here's hoping there's no issues for Saoirse's name (it's pronounced like inertia, doncha know) at the Academy Awards next month.

Tributes for English stage and film powerhouse Alan Rickman have been flooding in today.

The actor, who was 69, passed away from cancer while "surrounded by family and friends."

As well as messages of shock and condolences from fans and colleagues alike, some of Alan's own quotes and messages have been doing the rounds online too.

One piece in particular, the actor's sweet goodbye letter to the Harry Potter film franchise in which he played Severus Snape, definitely brought a tear to our eye:

The letter was published in Empire magazine back in 2011, after the seventh and final film was released, and was shared by a fan on Imgur today.

"A lifetime seems to have passed in minutes," he wrote.

"Three children have become adults since a phonecall with Jo Rowling, containing one small clue, persuaded me that there was more to Snape than an unchanging costume."

Many of those who worked with Alan on Harry Potter – including JK Rowling herself – took to social media today to pay their emotional tributes:

I'm very sad to hear about Alan today. I feel so lucky to have worked and spent time with such a special man and actor. I'll really miss our conversations. RIP Alan. We love you

Well, we all love pizza and honestly, we'd have it everyday if we could.

But when money is tight, or you want to lose a few inches, then pizza is not a good option. *Sob*.

But, behold, a pizza dough that only has two ingredients, is super easy, and won't ruin your bank account.

We know it sounds too good to be true, but with this recipe, you'll have the perfect pizza in no time:

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/4 cup of self-raising flour
  • 1 cup non fat Greek yoghurt

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 200*C and as it heats, combine flour and yoghurt.

2. Sprinkle some flour on your tabletop first, then place your dough ball on the table and knead with hands. Knead for about 8 minutes.

3. Spread dough on grease-proof paper and apply any ingredients you fancy.

4. Cook for 12-15 minutes, or until the crust has puffed up and is lightly golden.

And there you have it! It can now be your party piece.

Students from University College Cork (UCC) we're outraged this week when they entered their college campus to see an advertisement clearly hinting that having cleavage is "cheap."

Hanging off the ceiling is a poster for a smart card service which shows an outline of a woman, and beside that, the heading says, "cheap looking."

The UCC Feminist Society said they were angered to learn about the new ad campaign and directly went to the university's centre in hope of taking the ad down.

The head of the society told The Journal: “To suggest that a woman with her breasts on show is ‘cheap-looking’ aids slut shaming.

“We are shocked that the student centre would feel the need to stoop so low to advertise to students, more than half of whom are women,” she said.

But that wasn't the only thing on campus to offend its lady students. There was a second ad, shown on coffee cups, that read "what's your cup size," and then around the back was the outline of a woman's naked body with stickers covering her boobs.

In a survey last year, the college found that 1 in 7 of its female students have been victims of sexual assault, so it's no wonder that this campaign is aggravating them.

After a number of complaints were received, UCC's board of management issued a statement.

“University College Cork is committed to equality as a core value of the institution,” a spokesperson said. They then proceeded to take the posters down last night.

The smart card scheme is also being reviewed on campus.

Because the 1916 Rising is so close to home, we feel like we just can't get enough info about it. We want to know it all.

Well, now you can. Wicklow County Council has launched a mobile phone app called 1916WicklowLife – and it's really great.

You'll find snippets from newspapers, telling you exactly what happened on this day 100 years ago.

As well as that, the app displays advertisements, photos and events that happened way back then. It'll feel like all the events from 1916 are just sitting inside your pocket.

You can even see what the dentist, school and a concert was like back then, and get a laugh from the little quirks and occasions.

The app is available on both Android and iPhone. And, honestly, it's really worth the download.

It seems like Hailey Baldwin might be a bit sick of Justin Bieber already.

Hollywood Life has reported that Hailey has apparently given Justin an ultimatum regarding his love for other ladies and if he wants to be with her, he better "man up," according to the site.

As we all know, Justin has been linked to quite a few ladies in the past few months, including his ex, Selena Gomez. And to be fair, he did harp on about her for quite a while, and told nearly every news outlet that he still loves his former girlfriend.

To be fair to Hailey, we'd want Justin to stop singing out his ex, too.

A source told Us Weekly, "She [Hailey] demanded he stop stringing her along. She said he would lose her if he didn't man up and show he was serious about her."

The gorgeous pair have been friends for quite some time, so maybe this ultimatum is exactly what Justin needs to settle down and realise his true feelings.

We wish they were a family in the real world, but as a TV mother, she's an amazing support for Charlie.

This eight minute film released today is perhaps the most beautiful portrayal of Ireland and it's people that we have ever seen and it has nothing to do with any tourism board.

The short film, created by Sonder Visuals, has captured most of Ireland's most beautiful and captivating landscapes using drone technology.

The media company then overlaid these images with the words of Irish people for a truly once-off experience.

The video is the first in a series that the creators hope to do on each of the 28 countries of the European Union.

Sonder Visuals founders Sarah Fitzgerald and Theo Jebb are starting an epic roadtrip today as they plan to create a "visual journey… intent on capturing the essence within each of the 28 EU member states," according to the company's website.

The duo are encouraging viewers to use the hashtag #CaptureYourCountrysCharacter using imagery.
