I would like to thank Kate Middleton, today. Not for her inspiring sartorial choices, or for continuously turning us googly-eyed with home portraits of her kids; but for giving hope to a writer suffering from a perpetual bad hair day.
I’ll level with you here; give me unflattering men’s clothing and I will delight over transforming it into a quirky outfit, but ask me to style my hair into anything beyond a (crappy) ponytail and we’re all going home disappointed.
I’ve watched the YouTube tutorials, bought the invisible elastic bands, and invested in all the holding sprays known to man – and have come to the conclusion that I’m just not good at hair.
So, I was more than a little nervous about testing out the latest 'craze' in hair-styling: the hairnet.
In this age of rainbow hair and luscious extensions, what – or rather, who – could be influential enough to put a 1960s hair trend on 2016's style radar? Two words: The Duchess.
Yes, it seems Kate Middleton could step out in a black bag, and the supermarket would be sold out of refuse sack rolls in the space of an hour; but she's so fabulous that we decided to get in on the action.
I have to say, I initially had visions of ending up looking like Ena Sharples from Coronation Street (she was OG, you'll have to Google her) – but I ended up pleasantly surprised.
The most difficult thing about this process was actually getting my hands on a hairnet. My search brought me to three supermarkets and two pharmacies, where they either didn't stock hairnets or only had them in a shade of grey – ageist much?!
I had resigned myself to the fact that I would have to take a trip to 'the city', when I finally came across a hairnet in 'Medium Brown', and figured it would do the job. At €1.75 for a pack of two, I thought, 'sure why not?'
Upon opening the pack, I didn't hold out much hope; they looked like the things my brother had to wear over his short-back-and-sides when he worked in a fastfood restaurant as a teen. I also reckoned it was going to look awful against my blonde tresses.
But, oh, how wrong I was!
“It's going to look awful anyway, but let's see what we can come up with,” I told my colleagues, as the ever-talented Cynthia got to work with nothing but a hair brush, a few hair clips and the two hairnets.
After a couple of minutes of twisting and pinning, the job was done, and I'll admit to being more than a little taken aback by the reactions of those around me.
“Oh my God, it looks like you're going to a wedding!”
“It's actually REALLY nice!”
“You can't even see the hairnet!”
“You look really posh!” – The hairnet may actually have magical powers!
When I took a look in the mirror, I had to admit that I was really impressed. The hairnet held the roll in place really well, it didn't feel uncomfortable in the slightest, it didn't pull on the back of my head, and it kept my bouffant in place very neatly.
I'm so enamoured with K-Middy's poundshop hero that it has completely changed my opinion on up-dos, and I'm pretty much settled on recreating it for my next glitzy event!
Like many other women, I have some serious body hang-ups, and my large face is one of them (we won't even go there!); so I've always shunned the very suggestion of an up-style. There's something about the elegance and neatness of the hairnet, however, that has really changed my mind.
So, while celebrity trends come and go, I have realised that some are definitely worth a try.
Verdict: royal seal of approval.
