Yearly Archives: 2014

We’ve all been there. It’s 2am, you most definitely have to be up in 5 hours for work, and yet you can’t drag yourself away from Facebook.

It began as a casual look through your old profile pictures, just for the craic. Before you know it, you’re back in 2007 again, thinking about old friendships, ex-boyfriends, Leaving Cert exams and your teenage years.

“Life was so much better back then”, you think. “I didn’t know it, but I had it SO good.” And on and on, as you come to the conclusion that your life reached its peak about age 18 when you were at your most skinny/stress-free/goal-oriented.

The thing is though, you’ll probably have this same conversation with yourself in another ten years, as you look back at your twenties and think, “Christ my life was so simple back then… look at how happy I was!”

Nostalgia can be a lovely, fuzzy feeling most of the time. Things like old family pictures and conversations with childhood friends are all positive triggers for it, as we look back on days gone by with rose-tinted glasses.

But when reminiscing turns to envy for your former self, things aren’t quite so simple. Spending too much time thinking about what we “used to be” is simply an interruption of the present. When we berate ourselves for not being as focused as we used to, or not having as much willpower as we used to, or not being as social as we used to, all it leads to is feelings of sadness and low self esteem.

Social media is one of the biggest causes of misplaced nostalgia. Our Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (and Bebo, if you’re going back THAT far) accounts are all basically digital diaries and photo albums. It’s easy to spend hours lost in the past, as the present flies by without us even noticing.

What we forget, though, is the hundreds of amazing experiences we have had since those photos were taken or that status was posted. Yes, maybe we’re more stressed out than we used to be, or not QUITE as thin as that 2009 snap taken just after a bad break-up, but does that mean our life is now in a worse place than it was back then?

It’s important to keep in mind that although things might be different now, they are probably better in a lot of ways, too. We might have had our heart broken since then, but we learned about the importance of only staying in a relationship that makes us 100% happy. We might have gained a few pounds, but so what, if they were the result of some great times with friends?

Every “bad” element of our lives has a flip side. It all depends on how you look at things. Try to see yourself as you might when looking back a decade from now. Would you really focus on the temporary lows? Or the work-related stress? No. You’ll probably think, “Wow, I had things so good, and I didn’t even know it.”

So rather than waiting ten years for hindsight to kick in, embrace what you have now and begin to appreciate the present. Forget yesterday, or last month, or last year, and just enjoy today.

Geordie Shore's Charlotte Crosby has always had a curvy figure, but she showed off a dramatically slimmer look when she stepped out in London recently.

The star strutted her stuff in a pink bodycon dress which left no room for any extra weight:

Wow!

Charlotte's new look is even more impressive given that she was pictured back in June with a totally different physique.

The star has obviously been working hard to shed the pounds over the last few months, and she took to Twitter to express her delight at her svelte new figure:

In a recent interview, the star admitted she had piled on three stone since she first began filming Geordie Shore back in 2011. After seeing pictures of herself in a bikini during her holidays to Portugal over the summer, Charlotte decided something had to change. "I saw those pictures and I thought, I want to enjoy my clothes again I don't want to dress to hide my body."

She has kept fans updated throughout the weight loss process, even sharing images of her intense gym sessions:

Well done to her!

So can you imagine dancing around the living room putting on a talent show for your parents and singing these songs at the top of your voice? Well, chances are you have…and this is what they heard:

1. Spice Girls – 2 Become 1
“Be a little bit wiser baby, put it on, put it on”
Promoting safe sex is great and all, don’t get us wrong, but we were singing this to our parents at seven-years-old! *Cringe*

2. Mousse-T – Horny
“I’m horny, I’m horny, horny, horny” …etc
It’s all well and good if you were old enough to understand this wasn’t one you sang into your hairbrush at the top of your lungs, but spare a thought for those of us who were too young to know what “horny” was…

3. O-Town – Liquid Dreams
“Liquid dreams, my Liquid Dreams, Waterfalls and streams, these liquid dreams”
Eww.

4. S Club 7 – S Club Party
“Ghetto boys, make some noise! Hoochie mamas, show your nanas!”
We’re not so sure this is short for “Show you are bananas”…

5. Christina, Lil'Kim, Pink and Mya – Lady Marmalade
"Voulez-vous coucher avec moi (ce soir)"
It's every parent's dream to hear their child singing "Would you like to sleep with me tonight" in French around the neighbourhood. Especially on the ol' holliers … in France!

6. T-Spoon – Sex on the Beach
"I wanna have sex on the beach"
Oh we knew this one was bad, but it was just so damn catchy…

7. AQUA – Barbie Girl
"Make me walk, make me talk, do whatever you please. I can act like a star, I can beg on my knees"
The entire song is just a little disturbing in terms of male-female relationships actually!

8. The Bloodhound Gang – The Bad Touch
"So put your hands down my pants and I bet you'll feel nuts"
Ah, the charming soundtrack of our childhood…

9. Britney Spears – I'm a Slave 4 u
"Oh baby don't you want to dance up on me … Leaving behind my name and age"
Oh dear, oh dear…

So many movie stars appear to inhabit a different planet to the rest of us, so it’s ridiculously refreshing when you encounter a celeb that seems like the type of gal you could shoot the breeze with of a Sunday afternoon while wearing week-old sweats.

Kate Winslet IS this gal.

She’s down-to-earth, she’s funny and she was around LONG before any of these other girl-next-door types showed up. *Cough* Jennifer Lawrence *cough*

Here are just a few reasons why Kate is, and always will be, our main girl.

1) She flashed Leonardo DiCaprio when they first met so that shooting a nude scene together wouldn’t be awkward.

2) She cried on Parkinson when she revealed that her husband at the time loved her latest film role.

3) She featured in US Weekly’s list of ‘Celebrities with Lack of Ego’.

4) She gleefully roared ‘Look at me now!” on a chat show after revealing she had been called ‘Blubber’ by school bullies and locked in an art cupboard.

5) She refused to slim down for her role as Rose in Titanic because she thought her curvier figure was a better representation of women’s figures in the early 1900’s.

6) Commenting on body image, she said: “As a child, I never heard one woman say to me, "I love my body". Not my mother, my elder sister, my best friend. No one woman has ever said, "I am so proud of my body." So I make sure to say it to Mia because a positive physical outlook has to start at an early age.’

7) She danced with the Honey Monster for a TV advertisement when she was eleven.

8) She was outraged when GQ airbrushed her photos for their magazine cover.

9) Commenting on her figure, she said: I look like people that walk down the street. I don't have perfect boobs, I don't have zero cellulite – of course I don't – and I'm curvy. If that is something that makes women feel empowered in any way, that's great.”

10) Talking about the detox and diets, she says: "I'm no stranger to the occasional dodgy juice, but it doesn't taste very nice and it is bloody boring. It's not a way to live."

Need we say more? Kate, come live with us.

Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus were once not only Disney Channel darlings, but best friends too!

Now it seems that all has changed for the former BFF’s as Demi has confirmed they are no longer friends.

Speaking on US radio, Demi was aksed by a fan about the once-close friendship, to which she replied: “Yeah, it’s life and people change, and you know, I don’t have anything in common with her anymore, and I wish her all the best.”

Does she think Miley changed? We have no idea where she’d get something like that from…

It seems like a lot of Miley’s past friendships have phased out, as she was also known to be close with other Disney Channel stars such as Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale.

Oh, how things can change so drastically in just a few years!

It has been reported that Johnny Depp and his fiancée, Amber Heard could be heading for a split!

According to reports, Amber is said to be angry following Johnny’s notorious ‘drunken’ speech at the recent Hollywood Film Awards, a display which has garnered over five million views on YouTube.

The actress is said to be considering calling off their year long engagement thanks to his behaviour at the awards ceremony as a source tells Star magazine: “Amber couldn’t believe he had made such a fool out of himself. This reflects really badly on her, and she’s not happy about it.”

Johnny has previously opened up about his relationship with alcohol, saying: “I don’t have the physical need for the drug alcohol. No, it’s more my medication, my self-medication over the years just to calm the circus. Once the circus kicks in, the festivities in the brain, it can be ruthless.”

Getting your hair done should be a relaxing endeavour, right? You’re getting preened, you’re getting pampered and you’re leaving like a million bucks. What’s not to love? Well, a lot actually.

A trip to the salon can be nerve-wracking, stressful and downright scary and here are just a few reasons why.

1) You’ve spent twenty minutes on your make-up and now it’s sluicing down your cheeks, all courtesy of the over-enthusiastic fifteen-year-old trainee.

Thanks for that.

2) If you wear glasses, they’re quickly whipped off your face leaving you squinting and at the mercy of a woman with seriously large scissors.

Please be kind.

3) If you read the magazine you’re offered, you feel rude. If you don’t, you have to make awkward chit-chat.

No, I’m just not that into X Factor this year.

4) If you’re NOT going somewhere nice that night, you feel like a loser who’s going home to sit on the couch mournfully stroking her new beehive.

Ah, I might pop out for one, we’ll see.

5) You’re expected to maintain a light-hearted conversation over the sound of twelve blow driers.

SAY THAT AGAIN…OH SORRY, SAY THAT AGAIN?

6) Even if you’re with an old reliable, you can’t fully relax because you don’t know she won’t have an off-day.

Eyes on the prize, Alison.

7)  If you’re with a new person, silent panic attacks are completely justified.

Are you sure you know what you’re doing? Can I see your credentials?

8) Your ‘OMG, it’s exactly what I wanted' face is so good that you almost convince yourself sometimes. Sob.

My life is over.

There is very exciting news for Katy Perry and her fans today as she has officially been conformed to perform during the halftime of the Super Bowl!

The singer released a video in association with Pepsi showing her in a halftime ‘test-centre’ with all of the ideas she has come up with so far.

We really hope she goes with the glitter stadium while wrapped in bacon idea.

It looks set to be one hell of a halftime show if this promo video is anything to go by – and let’s be honest, Katy Perry isn’t one to be ‘low key’ is she?!

The star was absent at last night's American Music Awards despite winning three awards as she is currently spending time in Australia.

Katy has been struggling with the paparazzi down there, blasting them for taking photos of her in a bikini and even calling out paparazzo Jamie Fawcett in a rather angry tweet:

Eek, we think they better think twice about messing with Katy when she doesn't want to be photographed!

The AMA awards are one of the biggest nights of the year for music, but it's also yet another chance for our favourite stars to show off their red carpet style.

Forget Oscar-style floaty gowns, last night's awards were all about sexy, sultry looks – and there was a lot of leg on show!

Here are a few of the most revealing outfits from last night…

1. Kylie Jenner
All of the Kardashian/Jenner sisters in attendance had a fair bit of thigh on show, but Kylie's glamourous wine-coloured satin number won out. We have to admit, she pulls this off really well – and we love the wrist bag, too.

2. Khloé Kardashian
An otherwise simple dress with some detailing on the hem was a great choice for Khloé – we reckon she has the best legs of the whole Kardashian clan!

3. Jordin Sparks
Jordin was getting into the festive spirit already with this super-sparkly number – a real showstopper.

4. Heidi Klum
She's still got it! This odd boob tube/maxi skirt combo was a strange look, especially with the addition of those pink sash yokes, but let's face it, Heidi would look stunning in a black rubbish sack.

5. Fergie
This dress was just the beginning for Fergie, who really bared all in an embarrassing wardrobe malfunction during her live performance.

6. Christina Milian
The singer got VERY cosy with Lil Wayne on stage for their debut performance of Start A Fire. As for her outfit, is it missing a large chunk of material or is that just our inner Irish Mammy taking issue with any outfit that shows off your knickers?!

7. Gigi Hadid
In a change from the "legs eleven" trend, model Gigi Hadid went for a plunging neckline showing off her lacy black bra instead.

Whether you love the gym or you get most of your exercise lifting a purse crammed with neglected membership cards, chances are you have been to one at least once.

They're pretty much the same the world over and if you've managed to leave a work-out session without experiencing any of the thoughts below, we want to know your secret.

Teach us your ways because the rest of us are struggling here.

1) Will everyone see if I try to un- wedgie myself? Oh, they will. Ah, well.

There’s more where that came from, anyway.

2) I’m sweating so hard in between my boobs right now. Is that good?

Fit boobs! Yeah!

3) Why is that girl wearing make-up? Should I be wearing make-up?

 Yes. No. Yes. No.

4) Where did she get her cute gym outfit? I never get cute gym outfits.

Oh my God, are people laughing at my Magic Mike  T-shirt?

5) Will that giant ball hold my weight? I’m not chancing it.

I’m not being THAT girl.

6) Woah. That’s heavy. I’m putting this down now.

Walk away.

7) I can’t work this machine. Oh my God, I’ll have to get off without doing anything.

Everyone knows my shame.

8)  I seriously need to fart right now.

This is HORRIFYING.

9) Look at your man. What a sap.

I mean seriously, what a SAP.

10) Is it time for the sauna yet? I’ve been here for what…only FIFTEEN MINUTES?!

Clock’s broken. Clock is BROKEN.
