Opening up about our insecurities is never an easy thing to do. We often try to cover up our flaws rather than drawing attention to them.

However, we need normalise our flaws, because we all have something we don’t like about our appearance, whether that’s our curly, frizzy hair or our freckles.

Chloe Grace Moretz has bravely opened up about her struggle with cystic acne and we love her for it. Speaking about our skin struggles will help show women that there’s no such thing as perfect, we all suffer from blemishes, zits and blackheads, it’s a completely normal thing.

The 21-year-old actress opened up about the impact cystic acne had on her confidence.

Chloe shared: "I think what people don't talk about is the psychological element to having skin problems, and that was the hardest thing for me. It strips your self-confidence in a lot of ways; you know you can't hide from it at all, and you lose a little piece of yourself.”

The If I Stay star said she put a lot of pressure on herself to look ‘perfect’: "When I was younger, I lost a piece of myself by being so self-obsessed with my skin blemishes or what people thought about them.”

“As I grew up, I realised that half the battle was myself, and my own self-infliction of what I thought 'beauty' and 'perfect' was. But then, you realise there's no such thing as perfect, and your skin will go through ups and downs.”

The Carrie actress added: “All you can do is try and be as self-accepting as possible."

When it comes to her skincare routine, Chloe said she likes to keep it simple, only using water, honey and olive oil.

Chloe’s empowering message about embracing your skin is vital for women today. We put far too much pressure on ourselves to look perfect and often knock ourselves down if we have a spot or two.

We need to remember that acne doesn’t define who you are and that Chloe is completely right, there is no such thing as looking ‘perfect’.

When we think of Ireland's top bloggers, we often think of glamorous events, flawless makeup and a penchant for trendy clothes and a bouncy blowdry.

It's not too often that we see influencers open up about their 'flaws' or issues, but Rosie Connolly, winner of the Most Stylish Influencer award at the SHEmazing Awards, is opening up to her community of followers about her struggle with her skin.

Rosie shared a new bare-faced photo of herself to tell her followers to embarce themselves and not allow their percieved flaws to take a toll on their confidence.

A post shared by Rosie Connolly (@rosieconxxx) on

'Laying it all on the table… my skin, unfiltered, no makeup, no products. I've suffered from acne since I was about 18 and have gone through every product, every medication and every remedy you can think of.'

'Some worked, most didn't, but right now nothing is healing it. It's painful, inflamed, irritated and is of course taking its toll on my confidence. Why am I posting it here for the world to see?? Well, I'm 27, happily engaged with a gorgeous little boy, amazing friends and family, living a life I love, but I STILL get so hung up on my skin and allow it to get me down, change my mood and batter my self esteem.'

'So I can only imagine how much harder it would of been for me if I was a teen growing up now with acne.'

'So many flawless pictures all over social media lead you to believe that you're the only one who's suffering or "flawed,"' she said.

A post shared by Rosie Connolly (@rosieconxxx) on

'It shocks me to hear how many people have felt so ashamed of their skin problems, young or old.'

'Do I want to show my skin like this….? Hell no! But does it change me as a person… absolutely not. My skin issues do not define me, they do not make me "ugly", they are nothing to be ashamed of and for that reason, I'm sharing with you all.'

'If it helps just ONE person to accept themselves for who they are, "flaws" and all, then it was worth it,' she finished, showing her support for her followers.

This isn't the forst time Rosie has shared a candid snap of herself sans makeup.

The blogger previously shared a selfie using the hashtags #EmbraceTourFlaws to encourgae her followers to be comfortable in thier own skin.

Her posts, which pop up on our Insta feeds among the Facetuned visages of others, are a welcome relief from the perfectionist attitude which grips the social media site.

'As a result of acne I have been depressed with low self esteem,' reads one comment.

'It's not easy being authentic in a superficial society. Thank you for this post & for helping us sufferers. It truly helps.'

We have to commend the blogger on her honest post that's sure to help so many of her 149,000 followers.

We all experience hormonal break outs from time to time, and let's just say we're not too fond of them.

From dry patches, to spots and oily skin, it can be hard to keep our faces under control and blemish-free.

However, this new chart can apparently track when your skin is going to break out.

Dr Terry Loong, a top skin doctor, created a monthly 'Skin Cycle' in order for women to treat their skin properly.

How to work out your skin's 'monthly cycle'

"The Skin Cycle is all about being in tune with your body and can help minimise break outs, sensitivity and dryness and maximise skin repair," she told Cosmo.

The chart is 28 days long, and works along with your time of the month.

According to the cycle, from days one to four your skin will be "greasy and acne prone.

"Skin is most problematic during this time of the cycle. It is oily and thus prone to acne, and you may have pronounced dark circles under your eyes.

"Even if you don't feel like it, try to work up a sweat with exercise – it helps remove dirt and unclog pores," the chart reads.

"Make sure you sweep toner over your face afterwards to remove sweat and grease."

The chart then moves onto days five to ten. During these days, it claims that your skin will be mostly dry.

"Your skin is likely to be dry and a little flaky at the beginning of your cycle. Drink plenty of water and increase your intake of healthy fats to help it to stay supple."

Then from days 11 to 21, the chart states that we're supposed to have "normal and glowing" skin.

"Skin should be the healthiest and clearest between [these days]."

It suggests to "engage in gentle, relaxing exercise, such as yoga, to help ease your stress levels and keep skin clear."

Unfortunately, from days 22 to 28, our skin is back to being greasy and acne prone, and then the cycle starts all over again.

But as we all know, everyone is different, and if you suffer from bad skin the best thing to do is consult with your own doctor to figure out the best course of action for you,

At one point or another, everyone will suffer from blemishes.

Whether it's in your teens, 20s, 30s or beyond, breaking out can seriously damage your confidence and put a dent in your self-esteem.

However, this skincare range for oily and blemish-prone skin has a huge success rate, and it might just be skincare secret we've all been waiting on.

La Roche-Posay's award-winning Effaclar range is being extended this year, adding two new treatments to its line.

The line promises to provide a correcting and hydrating product in one, and since 2014 has garnered rave reviews.

Here's what's new to the Effaclar collection:

Effaclar Purifying Mask – €15

Promises to: Unclog pores, control shine and cleanse deep impurities.

This mask will offer an immediate clean-feel finish, and won't cause your skin to dry out, like many other masks do.

La Roche-Posay conducted a survey and found that 69 per cent of users saw a reduction in excess sebum immediately after using this, and 85 per cent reported a reduction within four weeks.

Effaclar Duo [+] SPF 30 – €18.50

Promises to: Correct uneven skin tone, hydrate and now protect your skin

New dermatological research from La Roche-Posay claims that UV exposure can actually worsen acne by over-drying and activating sebum glands.

Effaclar Duo [+] SPF 30 will tackle your imperfections, even out your skin tone, as well as protect your skin against UVA rays, UVB rays and pollution.

In the consumer survey which La Roche-Posay carried out, 89 per cent of participants said their skin looked smoother and 83 per cent said their skin cleared after four weeks of use.

With results like that, it would be crazy to not try this range out!

Very few people make it out of their teenage years without getting a few breakouts.

And while the vast majority of us became accustomed to concealing a blemish or two, countless teenagers were forced to deal with full-blown acne at the onset of puberty.

Thankfully, however, it sounds like there may be one serious advantage to enduring years of bad skin as scientists recently discovered.

According to a study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, the cells of individuals who suffer from acne have built-in protection against ageing.

Using 1,200 twins as part of their research –  a quarter of which had acne – scientists discovered that those with acne had protective caps at the end of their chromosomes.

These 'caps' indicate strong elasticity and mean that oily skin is less likely to thin and develop wrinkles as the individual matures.

That's right, ladies. You may have been the only one with acne in your group but you'll still be getting carded well into your forties.

For years people have been begging for greater diversity on fashion runways and it seems designer Moto Guo has taken it upon himself to answer that call in a very unique way.

Along with gingham separates and double-breasted blazers, Moto marched pimples down his debut runway for Milan Men’s Fashion Week.

The Malaysian designer employed MAC makeup artist Roberta Betti to help create the spotty look, which worked so well it looked like the male and female models actually had cystic acne.

In case you want to recreate the look, Roberta has kindly revealed the products she used for the show on her Instagram: MAC’s Mahogany Lip Liner and Coffee Eye Pencil.

Although we’re not sure we’ll be sporting this look in the near future, at least the next a pimple appears we’ll know to give Moto a call.

Kendall Jenner's looks have earned her millions as a catwalk model, but she reveals her self-confidence took a huge hit during her teenage years.

The model, rarely seen without full hair and make-up these days, says she suffered with bad acne until just three years ago.

"'I had such bad acne when I was younger; I remember it SO well" she revealed on her app this week.

Kendall's skin issues started when she was around 13 or 14, and though acne is a normal part of growing up for many people, the reality star says she found it difficult to cope – especially having grown up in the spotlight.

"'I wouldn't even look at people when I talked to them," she wrote.

"I felt like such an outcast; when I spoke, it was with my hand covering my face.

"I think I just got acne from being a teenager… but, where it really impacted me was how self-conscious I became about it. It completely ruined my self-esteem."

Over the last 18 months Kendall has worked for Chanel, Balmain, Givenchy and Marc Jacobs among other huge names, but she says it took years to regain her self-confidence.

"Even after things started to clear up, it took a solid amount of time to be okay with my skin and gain back my confidence.

"What I want everyone to understand is that it's been a process: It wasn't anything that happened overnight."

Even now, the model says she gets stressed when she has just "one zit," but she's trying to change her outlook.

"I'm working towards not caring and I'm just in so much of a better place about it all now that I'm older," she said.

"I realised that it's a part of life for some people and it doesn't define who you are."

We hate to break it to you, but acne is just one of those things that we wish we could leave behind with puberty. Unfortunately, that is sometimes just not the case.

While some of your blemishes can be the result of one too many trips to the take away or that time of the month, some people can face irritated skin or nasty breakouts as a result of one simple habit.

The water in your shower could be causing your skin to break out.

Life Script pointed out that changes in your environment can cause your skin to react badly.  This can be a result of our skin adjusting to different pH levels in the water.

However, Dr. Robynne Chutkan recently appeared on Today to inform us that hard water or soft water are the least of our worries. We might actually just be too clean, and that is what leads to break outs.

She says that a certain amount of grime is needed to keep our bodies full of friendly germs that we need to protect ourselves from those that can do us harm.

She explained that we may not actually need to be scouring ourselves in the shower daily with soap. In fact, by doing so, we could be removing bacteria that helps prevent certain skin issues, especially eczema.

She advises to forget about soaps, but if we insist to go for mild, organic products.

We can also ditch the hand sanitizers, unless you’re working in a contagious area of a hospital. While during flu season extra precaution is wise, apparently using too many antibacterial soaps is doing harm to our skin.

So, basically, repeatedly killing off good bacteria on our skin may break down our natural immunity and this can lead to breakouts and skin irritation.

You likely thought you'd be free of breakouts once you left secondary school, but acne can be one stubborn and annoying visitor.

In fact, according to the National Institute of Health, 80 percent of people between 11 and 30 deal with acne at some point in their lives, and it can commonly crop up into your forties too.

But with so many products, potions and procedures claiming to clear your skin, it can be hard to know which one actually works; or which one is right for your skin.

Here, we look at true acne game changers, from ones that are effective temporarily, to the ones that can banish the breakouts for an extended length of time:

Temporarily Effective

DIY remedies

If you're in need of an emergency SOS, a few at-home remedies do really give quick results.

If you have any eye drops lying around the house, a quick dab can knock down redness before a big event.

And if that doesn't work you can also mix Aspirin with a few drops of tea tree oil for an over-night mask that will help flatten the inflammation of a big zit.

Spot treatments that contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can also work well.

Diet and stress control

Recent studies show that there is an association between dairy and acne since some people are sensitive to the hormones found in dairy products.

Also a high-starchy diet (white bread, we're looking at you) has been connected to acne due to insulin levels increasing inflammation in the body.

And even though stress doesn't cause acne, studies show that it does aggravate those who are prone to it due to the release of hormones that increase oil production.

Very Effective

Birth control pills

A lot of adult female acne is connected to hormonal changes that cause an imbalance of estrogen and testosterone levels in the body.

This usually leads to stubborn breakouts on the lower half of the face, especially right before and during your period.

If you see this type of breakout happening like clockwork over the next few months, birth control pills will help rebalance hormone levels for a clearer complexion all month long.

Retinoids

Retinoids usually come in a topical cream form and work by penetrating and unclogging the sebaceous (oil) glands where acne starts.

They also have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory benefits that are seen as the standard care for acne patients.

The only catch here is that you need to be patient; retinoids can take up to two to three months to take full effect, but it will be worth it.

Most Effective

Constant cleansing and skin care

Acne patients are usually (and understandably) impatient and inconsistent with skin care products, but this makes breakouts worse.

Numerous studies support the consistant use of a twice-a-day gentle cleansing, along with the use of a sunscreen and moisturiser.

You'll be improving your acne by routinely clearing skin of unwanted oil and dirt, improving the skin barrier and reducing irritation.

However, don't use harsh or over-drying products, keep it simple with gentle formulas that will nuture your skin.

Chemical peel

Chemical peels work by breaking down the 'glue' between surface skin cells to promote exfoliation and unclogging of block up pores.

In addition to clearing acne, peels have the added benefit of lifting discolouration from scarring.

Salicylic and glycolic acids are the most effective chemical peel agents to look for since they promote exfoliation and penetrate the oil glands to break down sebum.

You might be a bit hesitant of this one – but believe us, it works.

Apple cider vinegar is a weird, but great way to step up your beauty game.

This multi-tasking ingredient can be used to prevent acne and even make nail polish last longer, but that's just the beginning!

Take a look at these…

Skin soother

Add a cup of apple cider to a bath filled with warm water and soak in it for 15 minutes.

The pH level of apple cider vinegar is similar to the pH level of the protective acid mantle layer of your skin, so this soak will help restore the balance.

Facial toner

Mix together one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and two cups of water. Moisten a cotton ball, and swipe over your clean, dry face.

The vinegar's natural alpha-hydroxy will stimulate circulation, as well as minimize your pores. Don't worry about the smell either, it will pass quickly.

Hair rinse

Mix two tablespoons of vinegar with one cup of water, and use it inbetween your shampoo and conditioner routine. It will remove any residue, to leave your hair strong and shiny.

Sunburn relief

Mix 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar with four cups of water. Pour the mixture into a cloth and apply to your sunburned skin.

The pH level will promote healing and prevent any nasty blistering.

Razor bump remedy

Moisten a cotton ball with diluted apple cider vinegar and swipe over the problem area.

The anti-inflammatory properties of the vinegar will sooth irritated skin and the acetic acid softens skin to help with ingrown hairs.

Bruise healer

Soak a cotton ball with diluted apple cider vinegar and secure it to the bruised area with a bandage. Leave it on for one hour.

The properties in the vinegar calms injured skn and increases circulation and healing.

If you suffered from acne as a teen (thanks, puberty), we know your pain. Acne is the skin problem from hell! And at the time it seems like they will NEVER ever go away.

But even if you do manage to move on from the spot-stage in your earlier 20s, a lot of people are left with marks and scarring on their faces – a bit of a beauty no-no.

However, as skin care technology has improved massively in recent years, we have some kick-ass ways to get rid of (or certainly massively reduce) that acne scarring forever…

1. The best way to not have any scarring is to try to prevent the acne in the first place. Yes, we realise for some that no matter what you do they are always going to pop up. But that is no excuse to give up on your skin altogether.

Try to keep your hands away from your face at all times and never touch the spot. Leave it alone because if you start messing with it, the scarring will end up much worse. Instead, apply a spot treatment that contains either salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or sulfur. These ingredients will diminish the blemish and reduce the scarring.

2. Use a mild exfoliator on acne scars to smooth out the skin. You should look for products with the ingredients of rice extract or lactic acid. These will help skin cells turn over faster and bring fresh new skin to the surface.

3. Even if your acne scars are still on your face from years ago, the war isn't over yet. You can help get rid of the red scarring by using a skin brightening product with either vitamin A or vitamin C in the ingredients.

4. If you want to use some natural products, they can be found right in your kitchen cupboard. Lemon juice mixed with an equal measure of water can help brighten the scars and baking soda is a great exfoliator.

5. If all of these treatments cease to work then it's time to hit up your nearest dermatologist. There are only a handful in Ireland so there can be a bit of waiting-list, but they are so worth it. A doctor can get right down to the root of the problem and advise what the best treatment for you will be.

6. And if that fails, it might be time to look into the laser route. Always make sure you go to a reputable clinic as many treatments don't suit some skin types. This is the most extreme option so proceed with caution.

If you suffer from skin problems like acne, you’ve probably spent a fortune on lotions and potions that promise to turn your life around. Unfortunately, they don’t often work, and you just end up scouring the shelves of the chemist for the next miracle cure once again.

This vicious circle of try, fail, try again, can get tiresome, so perhaps it’s time you came up with your own miracle cure. And hey, if it doesn’t work, at least you didn’t spend a fortune!

How to make your own cleanser
This is really easy to do. All you need is:

  • Olive oil or sunflower seed oil (organic, preferably)
  • Castor oil (you’ll get it in natural food shops)
  • A clean, empty bottle

While applying oil to oily skin may sound absolutely ludicrous, it actually makes perfect sense. Like cancels like, so if you put good oil onto your face, your skin will stop producing so much of it itself.

Both sunflower seed oil and olive oil are good for moisturising your skin. Some people prefer sunflower seed oil as it absorbs into the skin more quickly, but since you’ll be washing it off anyway, it doesn’t really make a difference.

Castor oil has many anti-bacterial qualities, but if you used it on its own, you’d be shedding skin for days. This is why you only need about a teaspoon of castor oil for every seven teaspoons of olive or sunflower seed oil. Of course, it depends on your skin, so you kind of have to try it a couple of times to get the ratio right.

For an extra kick, you can add a few drops of patachouli oil which is great for reducing swelling, speeding up the healing process and fighting infection.

Using your home-made oil cleanser is really easy too, just follow these steps:

  • Splash some warm water on your face to open up your pores
  • Put about half a teaspoon of the mixture into your hand and massage it into your face
  • Leave it for a minute or two to sink in
  • Wet a clean face-cloth with warm water and get to work washing the oil off (it won't just rinse off with water)
  • Splash your face with cold water to close your pores back up

See? So easy! You can use sunflower seed oil as a moisturiser too, but do not do this if you‘re going to be heading outside, as it will attract the harmful rays from the sun, which won’t do your skin any favours at all.

Good luck!
