Yearly Archives: 2023

This may just boil your blood to dangerous levels. Many of us are well-used to cleaning up after ourselves, as well as the men around us.

New research has found that women who share a home with a male partner undertake the 'majority' of the household chores, which is unsurprising to most.

Researchers at University College London and Imperial College London have found that women still do most of the household duties when they live with a man, specifically 16 hours per week on tasks compared to the mere six that men carry out.

The Independent reported on the data, which was taken on 8513 heterosexual couples who lived together between the ages of 16 and 25 from 2010 until 2012 in the UK.

The findings of the UK Household Longitudinal Study can't be applied to queer couples or couples who don't live together.

The study was published in the journal Work, Employment and Society, and focused on a series of weekly work variables; hours spent at a paid job, hours spent caring for a child or adult and hours spent on chores.

The education of the participants and their attitudes towards gender roles were also examined.

The couples were divided into eight groups, based on the balance of paid and domestic work each partner carried out.

A range of people were included with different backgrounds such as low caregiving responsibilities, men who are the primary earner, women who are the breadwinners, women who do most of the household work, dual earners who shared caregiving responsibilities, women who work part-time and do domestic work, couples with men who work long hours, and unemployed couples with low caregiving responsibilities.

It was found that women completed the majority of the domestic tasks in a shocking 93 percent of the couples surveyed.

When both partners worked full-time, women were FIVE TIMES more likely to spend 20 hours or more a week on chores.

50 percent of the couples examined had a "relatively egalitarian division of work," according to the authors of the study.

However, only two groups (seven percent of the couples) were seen to be the most egalitarian: a female earner who shared domestic work and couples in which men spent long hours on chores.

"The female-earner was the only group in which men’s contribution to the housework was similar to that of their partners, and this group had the highest proportion of women with educational qualifications higher than those of their partners," the study reads.

The authors concluded that in the UK, "gender equality in divisions of work is rare and gender norms remain strong."

Both partners need to share feminist ideals when it comes to household work being divided fairly, but a baby constantly thrust couples back into their old roles.

"The largest egalitarian groups in this study were less likely to have children," according to the data.

Gender disparities clearly still exist when it comes to care-giving and household duties, with domestic employment still mainly women in the workforce.

Gemma Atkinson and Gorka Marquez have been reflecting on the first time they met.

The pair were thinking back about the funny story of the first time they saw each other in their new series Gemma & Gorka: Life Behind the Lens.

As they prepare for their new TV series to air on August 30, the couple shared a snippet from the show on social media.

Gemma posted the clip of her and her fiancé describing their first meeting to her 1.9M Instagram followers.

The couple spoke about how they were in rehearsals for Strictly Come Dancing when they first laid eyes on each other.

The funny tale begins with them doing stretches with the rest of the Strictly cast and while Gemma was bending down to touch her toes, Gorka thought it was a good idea to introduce himself to her at that very moment by shouting through her legs.

Marquez then admitted when he met up with friends after a day of training he was asked how all the celebrities were and he revealed, “There is this blonde girl. I cannot dance with her because she’s too tall for me, plus she’s so hot”.

Gemma also said she found Gorka attractive and even though they weren’t paired-up on the show in 2017, they went on to start dating and welcomed their first child, Mia, into the world two years later.

The couple then got engaged in 2021 and welcomed the birth of their second child, a baby boy named Thiago, just last month.

The former Hollyoaks actress shared her excitement about their upcoming series in the caption of the post by saying, “A week today until the first episode of “Gemma & Gorka: life behind the lens” airs on @wtvchannel & @uktvplay. Hope you all enjoy it!”.

Charlie Bird has told how he is receiving Hospice care at home in his ongoing battle with motor neurone disease.  The legendary broadcaster today urged businesses across Ireland to host a coffee morning next month in a bid to raise €2 million to support its work.

Outlining a worsening of his condition, the 73-year-old said: “Every day is a struggle for me now. But I live each day at a time. My MND has deteriorated, especially affecting my mobility."

“I want to make one thing very clear: when my time comes, I want to pass away at home surrounded by my family – and the Hospice care team say they will look after me there.”

The former RTÉ chief news correspondent was joined by wife Claire and beloved dog Tiger at Powerscourt Hotel Resort and Spa in Enniskerry, Wicklow, as he asked the public, coffee shops, hotels and other businesses to join Ireland’s biggest coffee morning on September 21.

Bewley’s Big Coffee Morning Social for Hospice has raised €43.2million for Together for Hospice, the National Hospice Movement, since its inception in 1992.

The fundraising drive helps to pay for medical and general staff, palliative care beds, home care visits, specialist equipment and new hospice builds.

Two years after his diagnosis in autumn 2021, Charlie vowed to continue to support groups and charities “as long as I have a breath in my body”.

Communicating through an app which clones his speaking voice, he said he has been receiving care from Our Lady’s Hospice and Care Services at his Wicklow home.

But this service, along with 25 other Hospice and specialist palliative home care providers across Ireland, needs further support to continue what he termed its “brilliant” work.

“I would plead with everyone, in addition to businesses and organisations, to host or sponsor a coffee morning on September 21, or whenever suits them. Even two people getting together for a coffee counts as a fundraiser."

“None of us knows in this life when we might need Hospice care. So please, please extend the hand of friendship and support the Hospice wherever they are in the country. To those newly diagnosed with MND, I would advise: live each day at a time and fight as hard as you can. There are many great supports there to help us, so please use them.”

His wife Claire said Hospice is providing a lifeline to the couple.

“They listen and take so much time and care looking after both Charlie's physical and mental needs and also my needs as Charlie's wife and carer.“

“They never give up on us and their visits to our home give us hope that this dreadful journey can be made less stressful by letting them into our lives."

Geraldine Tracey, Interim Director of Nursing at Our Lady’s Hospice and Care Services, said Bewley’s Big Coffee Morning Social for Hospice is now entering its fourth decade of raising funds in support of Hospice in-patient and community services around Ireland.

“It is a chance to celebrate our many coffee morning hosts across the country, who are an incredible testament to the dedication and committed nature of Hospice supporters in local communities."

“This ongoing support is invaluable and funds vital services and quality initiatives enhancing care for patients living with a life limiting illness.”

*Businesses and the public can register to host a coffee morning, supporting their local Hospice on September 21, or on a date that suits them, on hospicecoffeemorning.ie or call 0818 995 996.

If they cannot host or attend one, a donation can be made at hospicecoffeemorning.ie/donate.

Ben Foden recently had a worrying trip to the hospital with his daughter.

Three-year-old Farrah, who rugby player Ben shares with his wife Jackie, was enjoying a day out yesterday with her family at a parkour gym in Brooklyn.

Unfortunately, Jackie later took to Instagram to share that their fun-filled day out during the summer holidays did not go as planned.

The 37-year-old mum posted a snap of little Farrah lying on a hospital bed, as dad Ben held her hand and watched over her protectively.

In a later photo, Farrah could be seen with a pink cast wrapped up as far as her right knee.

Following worried messages from her social media followers, Jackie subsequently took to her Instagram stories and explained how Farrah ended up getting a cast.

“Farrah was jumping into the foam pit at Ferox (which is a parkour gymnasium down the block) off those gymnastics jumping platforms,” the American businesswoman penned.

Jackie then went on to detail how foam blocks from the pit had been removed without her knowledge, which meant that Farrah’s landing was not a soft one.

“She jumped in and her foot hit the floor inside the pit, which insanely wasn't padded,” she continued.

Jackie wrapped up her message by explaining her daughter’s diagnosis.

“So in Farrah's case, it's a hairline fracture in the front of her foot, but because babies slip out of their casts so easily they have to have cast up to the thigh,” she revealed.

“She can't walk or do anything for the next 4-6 weeks, which is unfathomable even to think about for a toddler. So yah, pray for us,” she concluded worryingly.

Jackie and Ben tied the knot after two weeks of dating in August 2019. The couple’s ceremony was held one year after Ben’s marriage to The Saturdays singer Una Healy came to an end.

Ben shares two children – Aoife Belle (10) and Tadgh (7) – with ex-wife Una, and he welcomed daughter Farrah into the world with Jackie in May 2020.

Fans of Vicky Pattison have been sending her their love, after she opened up about a new health diagnosis.

The former Geordie Shore star has been incredibly open in the past about her health, including the process of freezing her eggs earlier this year.

Now, Vicky has chosen to share an update regarding her ongoing struggles with periods.

Taking to Instagram yesterday evening, the 35-year-old posted several unfiltered snaps of herself feeling low.

“I have struggled with my periods my whole adult life- but over the last 5 years or so my PMS symptoms have been completely out of control- it has affected my relationships, my work & my quality of life,” Vicky penned at the beginning of her lengthy caption, confessing that she gets “totally consumed by my own dark thoughts”.

Vicky then went on to explain how she has been in discussions with doctors about her periods for years, but that she was “made to feel weak”. Following support from her loved ones and fiancé Ercan Ramadan, the former I’m A Celebrity winner continued to seek a diagnosis.

“This week I decided enough was enough and went private & told myself I wouldn't be dismissed. When the doctor said to me 'it sounds like you have PMDD..' I cried,” Vicky admitted.

“I cried because I felt f**king heard in a medical setting for the first time in years and also I cried because hopefully now I can start trying to manage this rather than just 'get on with it'- like I feel like women are expected to,” she added, concluding: “For the first time in ages.. I feel more positive.”

Many fans of the reality star have since taken to her comments section to thank her for breaking the stigma surrounding premenstrual dysphoric disorder.

“Thank you for this! It needs to be spoken about and awareness needs to happen. I wish you well,” one follower replied.

“PMDD community is everything, no one gets it like we do, we got you xx,” another fan promised.
