A Long Song For Ricki Wilde by Tia Williams

Published by Quercus on February 6

Ricki Wilde has many talents, but being a Wilde isn’t one of them. As the impulsive, artistic daughter of a powerful Atlanta dynasty, she’s the opposite of her famous socialite sisters. Where they’re long-stemmed roses, she’s a dandelion: an adorable bloom that’s actually a weed, born to float wherever the wind blows. In her bones, Ricki knows that somewhere, a different, more exciting life awaits her. When regal nonagenarian, Ms. Della, invites her to rent the bottom floor of her Harlem brownstone, Ricki jumps at the chance for a fresh beginning. She leaves behind her family, wealth, and chaotic romantic decisions to realise her dream of opening a flower shop. And just beneath the surface of her new neighbourhood, the music, stories and dazzling drama of the Harlem Renaissance still simmers. One evening in February as the heady, curiously off-season scent of night-blooming jasmine fills the air, Ricki encounters a handsome, deeply mysterious stranger who knocks her world off balance in the most unexpected way.

Small Hours by Bobby Palmer

Published by Headline on March 14

If you stood before sunrise in this wild old place, looking through the trees into the garden…You'd see a father and son, a fox standing between them. You wouldn't know that Jack has returned from the city, still determined to be the opposite of his father. Or that Gerry would rather talk to animals than this angry man back under his roof. You wouldn't imagine that neither is quite who the other remembers. That someone irreplaceable is missing. That one conversation might change everything. If you saw them in the small hours, you'd begin to piece together their story. It's about connection and belonging – and how the world comes alive when you stop to take it in.

Funny Story by Emily Henry

Daphne always loved the way her fiancé Peter told their story. How they met (on a blustery day), fell in love (over an errant hat), and moved back to his lakeside hometown to begin their life together. He really was good at telling it…right up until the moment he realised he was actually in love with his childhood best friend Petra. Which is how Daphne begins her new story: Stranded in beautiful Waning Bay, Michigan, with a dream job as a children’s librarian, and proposing to be roommates with the only person who could possibly understand her predicament: Petra’s ex, Miles Nowak. Scruffy and chaotic, Miles is exactly the opposite of practical, buttoned up Daphne, whose coworkers know so little about her they have a running bet that she’s either FBI or in witness protection. The roommates mainly avoid one another, until one day, while drowning their sorrows, they form a tenuous friendship and a plan. If said plan also involves posting deliberately misleading photos of their summer adventures together, well, who could blame them? But it’s all just for show, of course, because there’s no way Daphne would actually start her new chapter by falling in love with her ex-fiancé’s new fiancée’s ex…right?

2023 has been a rollercoaster of a year for many of us, and that is also true for several of our favourite celebrities.

Throughout the last 12 months, we have been shocked time and time again by the announcements that some of the strongest celeb couples have called time on their relationships. So, as 2023 draws to a close, we thought we’d take a look back at some of the splits that we’re still in disbelief about.

We have curated a list below of 10 celebrity couple breakups that were confirmed over the past year. Whether it was a long-lasting relationship or a once-beloved marriage, 2023 became the year that ended many well-known romances. Take a look :

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner

After getting hitched in Vegas in May 2019, the Jonas Brothers hitmaker and the Game Of Thrones alum shocked fans around the world in September when they filed for divorce. Rumours soon began to spread that the former couple were struggling to agree on arrangements for their two daughters, Willa (3) and Delphine (1). Eventually, Joe and Sophie released a joint statement, writing: “After a productive and successful mediation, we have agreed that the children will spend time equally in loving homes in both the U.S. and the UK. We look forward to being great co-parents.”

Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello

After seven years of marriage, it was confirmed in July that Modern Family actress Sofia and Magic Mike star Joe were filing for divorce. Concerns for their relationship were swirling at the time, as Sofia had travelled to Italy to celebrate her 51st birthday – without her husband or her wedding ring. In an announcement to Page Six, they said of their split: “We have made the difficult decision to divorce. As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect of our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives.”

Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth

The Legally Blonde actress rarely puts her family life on full display, and so it came as a shock when Reese Witherspoon announced that she had begun the process of divorcing her husband Jim. The pair had been married for 12 years, and welcomed 11-year-old son Tennesse together in September 2012. In a joint statement in March, they wrote: “We have enjoyed so many wonderful years together and are moving forward with deep love, kindness and mutual respect for everything we have created together."

Britney Spears and Sam Asghari

Following the landmark end to her conservatorship in November 2021, it looked as though Britney might have found her happy ending in June 2022, when she tied the knot with Sam. However, just 14 months after their wedding, it was confirmed in August that the 29-year-old model had filed for a divorce from Britney. Speaking on her Instagram page afterwards, the Toxic singer said: “Six years is a long time to be with someone so, I'm a little shocked… but, I couldn't take the pain anymore honestly.”

After their first meeting in 2018, Jodie and Joshua’s marriage came to an end in October of this year. Reports of court documents noted that the Queen & Slim star cited “irreconcilable differences” at the end of four years of marriage. The former couple have also agreed on joint custody of their three-year-old daughter Juno, whom they welcomed together in April 2020.

Ariana Grande and Dalton Gomez

After a tumultuous few years, fans of thank u, next singer Ariana were thrilled when she tied the knot with real estate agent Dalton in May 2021. Sadly, their marriage would not end up lasting for long, as concerns surrounding the couple’s marriage grew when Ariana was spotted without her wedding ring at Wimbledon. Just a few days later, their separation was official when the 30-year-old filed for divorce from Dalton, reportedly citing the reason as “irreconcilable differences”. It is rumoured that Ariana is now dating her Wicked co-star Ethan Slater, after they met on set in London.

Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness

Hugh and Deborra-Lee tied the knot all the way back in 1996. So, fans were understandably devastated when they shared in September that, after 27 years of marriage, they were going their separate ways. During their time together, Deborra-Lee and The Greatest Showman actor adopted their son Oscar (23) and daughter Ava (18). “Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth,” they wrote when announcing their divorce, adding: “We undertake this next chapter with gratitude, love, and kindness.”

Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn

After meeting at the Met Gala in 2016, many Swifties were hopeful that Taylor Swift had finally found her forever match in Joe Alwyn. Sadly, after seven years of romance, it was widely reported in April that their pair had split. Although neither of them never officially confirmed their breakup, Taylor has since moved on and is now in a seemingly blissful relationship with NFL player Travis Kelce. Speaking to Time about her new romance earlier this year, the Anti-Hero hitmaker gushed: “I’m going to see him do what he loves, we’re showing up for each other.”

Hugh Bonneville and Lulu Williams

Hugh, known to many as Lord Grantham in Downton Abbey, dominated headlines in late September when he revealed that his 25 year marriage to Lulu Williams was over. In a statement, a spokesperson for the 60-year-old actor confirmed the sad news of their separation. After knowing each other since they were teenagers, the pair had tied the knot in November 1998. Hugh and Lulu continue to co-parent their teenage son Felix.

Meryl Streep and Don Gummer

Although her split from husband Don actually occurred over six years ago, Hollywood legend Meryl Streep only chose to unveil the news in October of this year. The pair, who still remain legally married to this day, initially tied the knot back in 1978. In a statement to People, a spokesperson for the Mamma Mia actress wrote: “While they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart.” Meryl and Don continue to share four children and five grandchildren together.

Christmas Day is officially underway. December 25 has arrived; a day filled with merriment, family, twinkly lights and turkey.

I’ll be rocking the matching pyjamas, singing along to Last Christmas and toasting to the end of 2023 as my nearest and dearest gather at Nanny’s house.

As excited as I am for the holidays, it is important to remember that this time of the year isn't merry and bright for everyone, especially for people who are struggling with mental health issues.

Mental health disorders aren’t going to take the day off or magically vanish when you sit down to watch Love Actually. I wish they would, but they don't.

There’s a lot of pressure placed on society to act like all is well just because the holidays are here. For those with anxiety, depression, OCD and other mental health disorders, it can feel impossible to simply put on a ‘brave face’ for the sake of the extended family.

We try our best to keep up appearances but I think it is very important to remember that you shouldn’t feel ashamed or disappointed in yourself if you find the holidays difficult. Having a mental health disorder is a constant battle. You can’t just pop a plaster over it and carry on with your day.

Living with anxiety has taught me that there will be good days and there will be bad days. It is a disorder you manage, not banish, unfortunately. Another thing, and possibly the best thing, this disorder has taught me is that there is help out there. Never ever be afraid to reach out to a friend or relative if you're feeling particularly bad.

You may feel like you're 'ruining' Christmas, but that couldn't be further from the truth. There is never a bad time to reach out and seek help, Christmas or not. Your best friend will be there to hug you on the bad days. Your sister will help you find a counsellor. Your dad will listen when you're ready to talk about what you're experiencing.

As hard as it can be, you must hold on to every ounce of hope.

Matt Haig sums it up perfectly:

“You will one day experience joy that matches this pain. You will cry euphoric tears at the Beach Boys, you will stare down at a baby’s face as she lies asleep in your lap, you will make great friends, you will eat delicious foods you haven’t tried yet, you will be able to look at a view from a high place and not assess the likelihood of dying from falling. There are books you haven’t read yet that will enrich you, films you will watch while eating extra-large buckets of popcorn, and you will dance and laugh and have sex and go for runs by the river and have late-night conversations and laugh until it hurts. Life is waiting for you. You might be stuck here for a while, but the world isn’t going anywhere. Hang on in there if you can. Life is always worth it.”

We have been treated to another glimpse at Bridgerton’s new season!

Earlier this month, it was announced that the third season of the raunchy period drama will be released in two parts, beginning next May. It had been hoped that Bridgerton would return this year, but its launch was subsequently postponed due to the actors’ strike.

However, despite the initial disappointment of a longer wait, Netflix has now given Bridgerton fans a special Christmas present – in the form of an official poster and several new images!

Credit: Netflix

As season three will be focused on the friends-to-lovers story of Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton), the first official poster for Bridgerton’s return portrays Penelope looking at herself in a handheld mirror.

“Even a wallflower can bloom,” the poster teases, referring to the upcoming conclusion to Penelope’s story as the secret Lady Whistledown.

The streaming giant has also released five brand-new stills from season three. One of the images features Colin returning from his travels in the hopes of making things right with Penelope, after she overheard him insulting her at the end of season two.

Fans of the will-they-won’t-they pair have been treated to a glimpse of their reunion, as one photo showcases Colin and Penelope at a ball, the former's hand mysteriously bandaged.

Alongside two more stills of the wider Bridgerton family, viewers will also be thrilled to see a first snapshot of happily married Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and his wife Viscountess Kate (Simone Ashley), following their marriage at the end of last season.

In the official logline for Bridgerton’s return, Netflix teases: “Eager to win back her friendship, Colin offers to mentor Penelope in the ways of confidence to help her find a husband this season. But when his lessons start working a little too well, Colin must grapple with whether his feelings for Penelope are truly just friendly.”

Fans have just five months to wait for Bridgerton’s third season, as the first four episodes arrive on May 16, followed by the final four on June 13.

We can finally let loose, stick on the Christmas tunes and look forward to the festive holidays.

With this year being really, really difficult for so many of us, I think we can all agree that we could do with some Christmas cheer right about now.

So, stick on your fab Christmas jumper, line up a stellar playlist full of festive songs, bake a batch of mince pies, and tuck into a few of these Holiday(ish) romance books while you're at it.

  1. In A Holidaze by Christina Lauren

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…but not for Maelyn Jones. She’s living with her parents, hates her going-nowhere job, and has just made a romantic error of epic proportions.

But perhaps worst of all, this is the last Christmas Mae will be at her favourite place in the world—the snowy Utah cabin where she and her family have spent every holiday since she was born, along with two other beloved families. Mentally melting down as she drives away from the cabin for the final time, Mae throws out what she thinks is a simple plea to the universe: Please. Show me what will make me happy.

The next thing she knows, tires screech and metal collides, everything goes black. But when Mae gasps awake…she’s on an airplane bound for Utah, where she begins the same holiday all over again. With one hilarious disaster after another sending her back to the plane, Mae must figure out how to break free of the strange time loop—and finally get her true love under the mistletoe.

  1. One Day in December by Josie Silver

Two people. Ten chances. One unforgettable love story.

Laurie is pretty sure love at first sight doesn't exist anywhere but the movies. But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man who she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there's a moment of pure magic… and then her bus drives away.

Certain they're fated to find each other again, Laurie spends a year scanning every bus stop and cafe in London for him. But she doesn't find him, not when it matters anyway. Instead they "reunite" at a Christmas party, when her best friend Sarah giddily introduces her new boyfriend to Laurie. It's Jack, the man from the bus. It would be.

What follows for Laurie, Sarah and Jack is ten years of friendship, heartbreak, missed opportunities, roads not taken, and destinies reconsidered.

  1. Christmas Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella

’Tis the season for change and Becky Brandon (née Bloomwood) is embracing it, returning from the States to live in the charming village of Letherby and working with her best friend, Suze, in the gift shop of Suze’s stately home. Life is good, especially now that Becky takes time every day for mindfulness—even if that only means listening to a meditation tape while hunting down online bargains.

But Becky still adores the traditions of Christmas: Her parents hosting, carols playing on repeat, her mother pretending she made the Christmas pudding, and the neighbours coming ’round for sherry in their terrible holiday sweaters. Things are looking cheerier than ever, until Becky’s parents announce they’re moving to ultra-trendy Shoreditch—unable to resist the draw of craft beer and smashed avocados—and ask Becky if she’ll host this year. What could possibly go wrong?

Becky’s sister demands a vegan turkey, her husband insists that he just wants aftershave (again), and little Minnie needs a very specific picnic hamper: Surely Becky can manage all this, as well as the surprise appearance of an old boyfriend–turned–rock star and his pushy new girlfriend, whose motives are far from clear.

But as the countdown to Christmas begins and her bighearted plans take an unexpected turn toward disaster, Becky wonders if chaos will ensue, or if she’ll manage to bring comfort and joy to Christmas after all.

  1. Mistletoe and Mr. Right by Sarah Morgenthaler

Lana Montgomery is everything the quirky small town of Moose Springs, Alaska can't stand: a rich socialite with dreams of changing things for the better. But Lana's determined to prove that she belongs…even if it means trading her stilettos for snow boots and tracking one of the town's hairiest Christmas mysteries: the Santa Moose, an antlered Grinch hell-bent on destroying every bit of holiday cheer (and tinsel) it can sink its teeth into.

And really…how hard could it be?

The last few years have been tough on Rick Harding, and it's not getting any easier now that his dream girl's back in town. When Lana accidentally tranquillizes him instead of the Santa Moose, it's clear she needs help, fast…and this could be his chance to finally catch her eye. It's an all-out Christmas war, but if they can nab that darn moose before it destroys the town, Rick and Lana might finally find a place where they both belong…together.

  1. The Twelve Dates of Christmas by Jenny Bayliss

When it comes to relationships, thirty-four-year-old Kate Turner is ready to say "Bah, humbug." The sleepy town of Blexford, England, isn't exactly brimming with prospects, and anyway, Kate's found fulfilment in her career as a designer, and in her delicious side job baking for her old friend Matt's neighbourhood café. But then her best friend signs her up for a dating agency that promises to help singles find love before the holidays. Twenty-three days until Christmas. Twelve dates with twelve different men. The odds must finally be in her favour . . . right?

Yet with each new date more disastrous than the one before–and the whole town keeping tabs on her misadventures–Kate must remind herself that sometimes love, like mistletoe, shows up where it's least expected. And maybe, just maybe, it's been right under her nose all along. . . .

  1. One More for Christmas by Sarah Morgan

For sisters Samantha and Ella Mitchell, Christmas is their most precious time of the year—a time for togetherness, love and celebration. Cat-eye glasses are always in style, and they're a great choice if you're looking for something that's both fashionable and functional. Plus, cat-eye reading glasses come in different shapes and sizes, so you can find one that works with your face shape and preference. For example, oversized cat eye readers are perfect for those who want more coverage from their glasses while maintaining an elegant look. On the other hand, chic cat-eyes work well for those who prefer a lighter frame or larger lens size.

Geometric frames

Geometric reading glasses are a big trend this year and come in many shapes. From octagon-shaped to hexagon, these frames have been seen on models at Fashion Week. Our favorite geometric shapes include oversized, geometric round, and rectangular frame styles. But, of course, we can't get enough of how chic it looks with a wide collar shirt, blazer, and skirt combo!

Round reading glasses

There's something about round reading glasses that looks classic and chic. They have a retro feel that is always in style and can be easily dressed up or down. They are large enough to make a statement but not so large that they are overwhelming. Round readers also tend to cover more of your face than other shapes like square or rectangular glasses, making them ideal for women who want their frames to serve as an accessory that blends into their outfit.

Stylish clear frame

Clear frame reading glasses are a great way to highlight your face. They are also stylish and can be accepted with any outfit. Consider clear frame glasses if you are looking for a new pair of reading glasses. They are sure to make your appearance and experience you're excellent.

Green reading glasses

Green reading glasses are an excellent option for women who want to stay on trend. Not only are they trendy, but green is also known to be a relaxing colour, which can help reduce eye strain. When choosing your pair of green reading glasses, try different styles and shapes to find the perfect fit for you.

Trendy Tortoiseshell Reading Glasses

Tortoiseshell is one of the most unique patterns you can choose for your reading glasses. Tortoiseshell is also one of the most popular eyeglass frames because it is versatile. It can be combined with other colours and materials to create various looks. The tortoiseshell pattern is typically in browns, leopard or cheetah, or any combination of these colours. These tortoiseshell eyeglasses are perfect for someone looking for something chic that will go with anything they wear!

Red reading glasses

If you're looking for a pair of fashionable reading glasses, you can't go wrong with a pair of red frame reading glasses. Cat eye glasses are having a moment right now, and they're the perfect way to add a pop of colour to your look. Red frames are easy to make a statement without trying too hard.

If you're looking for the most fashionable reading glasses for women, you should keep a few things in mind. First, think about what style of frame you want. Second, consider what color would look best on you. Third, think about the shape of your face and whether you want round or rectangular lenses. Fourth, decide if you wish a full-rimmed or half-rimmed frame. And finally, ask yourself how much money you want to spend. With these four considerations in mind, it's easy to find the perfect pair of readers!
