Yearly Archives: 2018

Let's be honest, every girl dreams of their wedding day.

You spend your childhood imagining your Princess dress, your dream husband and your ideal venue (mine was Disneyland back in the day, FYI).

I'm yet to meet a person who doesn't love the idea of getting married in a beautiful castle – living like a royal for a brief moment.

Ireland has no shortage of beautiful castles, but some are simply a cut above others.

One castle that really just does it for me is Markree Castle, in Sligo.

I love Sligo, so I'm super excited about this.

Markree Castle from the air. Drones are fun.

A post shared by Torrance Coombs (@torrancecoombs) on

From the moment you drive through the gates of the Markree estate, you are transported to a real-life fairytale.

Be king and queen for a day as you walk hand-in-hand through immaculate gardens and along flag-stone paths to join your loved ones in celebrating your vows.

Honestly, I'm years off a wedding, but I'd nearly book it now – and worry about finding a man later.

The Gothic-style Castle is set in the heart of the beautiful Sligo countryside, on the route of the Wild Atlantic Way.

SORRY, did we mention that they have two Irish wolfhounds? Who are basically the castle mascots!

It is a truly authentic, relaxed and uniquely charming wedding venue, where you will find yourself immersed in unrivalled castle hotel comfort.

Also, let's just talk about the setting for a hot second – there are with mature trees, a rose garden and grounds along the river Unshin, including a boathouse and woodland walk.

Just THINK of the gorge pictures you'd get.

Recently, the castle was the set for a film called Royally Ever After, which couldn't be more fitting for the venue.

We had a cheeky gawk at their website, so get the low down on their wedding package – and holy heck, it is good stuff.

You'll get exclusive use of Markree Castle and grounds for you and your guests, including of the Grand Hall and reception rooms (and boy, they are GRAND).

A personal planner will be on hand to help and advise you on every aspect of your day, which is good to know.

When you and your bridal party arrive to the Castle, you'll be welcomed with a red carpet and a cheeky Champagne reception. Can't argue with that.

That's actually the tip of the ice berg – they'll sort out every aspect of your day, from a dinner delicious menu to drinks receptions.

Oh, and an important thing to note for all you single gals – the castle also offer weekend breaks (depending on availability).

You get a luxurious two night stay in the castle, as well as two evening meals and breakfast each morning.

You can enjoy roaming the castle gardens and the antique furnished reception rooms with beautiful views of the manicured lawns and rose garden.

It is positively dreamy (I've actually been, so I know what I'm talking about).

Can we go now?

Hello, my queens.

So unless you've been living under a rock with no Internet you'll have heard of RuPaul's Drag Race.

via GIPHY

No? Well sit down sista cause I'm about to teach you a thing about the fiercest, bitchiest, most fabulous reality show to ever grace our screens.

Now in it's tenth season and the winner of multiple awards, RuPaul's Drag Race is well worth your time.

So let's start with the basics. What is a drag queen? It's not just hairy men in tights prancing at your local panto, it's far, FAR more complicated than that.

via GIPHY

When in drag, the queens are always referred to a 'she/her' in the work room or when they're out of drag it is also mainly 'she/her' but some of the older drag queens can revert to masculine pronouns.

Each season begins with a cohort of new queens vying for the crown and the $100,00 prize money. Most episodes start with RuPaul in boy drag appearing in the work room (where the drama happens) and setting a mini-challenge. Winner of the mini-challenge is then granted some kind of advantage in the maxi challenge. Challenges range from designing show-stopping outfits, to musical performances, to impersonations and making over members of the public.

via GIPHY

The bottom queens then lipsync for their survival. RuPaul then decides who stays and who will "Sashay Away."

Between all of this is plenty of drama, bitching, confessions, back-stabbing, meltdowns, wardrobe malfunctions and sabotaging- it's brilliant.

Drag queens themselves can be loosely divided into seven categories, because the whole point of drag is breaking down boundaries, honey.

Pageant queens– these are the girls have compete in drag beauty competitions and pageants. Think flawless make-up, big hair *cough* Alyssa Edwards *cough* and even bigger personalities.

via GIPHY

Horror queens– the antithesis of the pageant queens, horror queens, like Sharon Needles, delight in gender-bending, gothic shock- literally, Sharon Needles once spewed blood on the catwalk

via GIPHY

Comedy queens– sure to be quick with the sassy comebacks, comedy queens like Bianca Del Rio and Ben De La Créme have their characters down and are a force to reckoned with

via GIPHY

Fishy queens– these are the queens that are gorgeous- like pass for a supermodel gorgeous. If you ever want to question your own looks, check out Shangela and Naomi Smalls- pure stunners.

via GIPHY

Alternative/Haut couture queens– These are queens that really don't want to be put in a box. They delight in all things odd, mixing high fashion with cardboard with all kinds of crazy stuff.

via GIPHY

Impersonators– literally what is says on the tin. Check out Derrick Barry- the Las Vegas Brittney Spears impersonator or early Chad Michaels when she was impersonating Cher.

via GIPHY

Okay got it? There's a lot of different drag out there. So why are they all racing for this RuPaul?

Mamma Ru is basically drag goals and a nod from her can get your drag career set up. She was a trail-blazing queen in the 1990's. Her first major breakthrough was in 1989 with in the B-52's music video to Love Shack. She went on to have her own successful music and modelling career, becoming the first drag queen to be sign to Mac and posing with the likes of Naomi Campbell.

Building a steady LGBTQ fan base, she started hosting Drag Race in 2008, slowly becoming more and more popular, exploding in recent years with two Emmy awards.

Yas, queen.

Ready to dip your toe in drag waters? First you're going to need a basic dictionary of drag-speak. Don't worry, we'll happily provide ( in no particular order).

Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve and Talent: The four key elements of any good drag performance (find the hidden message for extra points).

Hunty: the drag alternative to 'frenemies'

Reading: to slag another queen off, usually as part of an act

Throwing Shade: also means slagging off, but with bitchier undertones

via GIPHY

Paint: make-up

Tuck: the process of, ahem, arranging the man parts to look like lady parts

Fish: a drag queen that could pass for a woman, relates to the presence of a vay-jay and the accompanying… ehhhh…. aromas

Slay: to werk it

Werk: to slay it (obviously)

Death drop: often seen during lipsyncs, it's jumping up in the air and landing in the splits or dramatically dropping to the floor

So what are you waiting for? RuPaul's Drag Race is now available on Netflix.

Now, sashay away.

So unless you've been living under a rock for the last few months, you'll know that Prince Harry is engaged to the beautiful Meghan Markle.

The pair will exchange vows on May 19 (we have it in the diary), and everyone is getting pretty excited about it.

Naturally, a lot of companies are jumping on the royal wedding bandwagon – with special edition product being released all ove the place.

Our favourite so far? It has to be the chocolate treats with the couple's faces printed on them.

To celebrate the Royal Wedding this May, ChoconChoc.co.uk have created luxurious white chocolate hearts featuring the royal couple themselves!

The chocolates are available free at Harry’s Bar in London, with every purchase of the ‘Harrypolitan’ cocktail (yes that is a thing) or can be bought online from Choc on Choc’s website for just £4.99.

Small price to pay for genuine joy.

The little white chocolate treats even come in a special box, making them a really cute gift idea for any royal enthusiasts.

However, if you're not particularly in to the whole royal wedding, fear not, as Chon on Choc have so many amazing creations.

For example, why not chow down on this impressive chocolate cheese board? No actual cheese involved, fyi.

Or what about a chocolatey 5-a-day?

Or, you could simply take a bite out of a Birkin? Yes please.

Festival fashion is always a bit out there – from glitter tits and fringe to rainbow boots and morph suits (yes, people wear them).

Anyway, while I would usually accept the style, I wouldn't be caught dead wearing the majority of it.

Party because I don't have the figure for them, but partly because I don't have the balls.

Anyway, my lack of balls could not have prepared me for one of this season's 'hottest' festival garments.

Introducing: the denim thong.

The gorge folks at PrettyLittleThing are breaking boundaries left, right and centre… and this denim thong is their cherry on top.

Listen, I totally get the merits behind this creation, and the way PLT have styled it is tres cool.

However, my mind goes straight to an important issue: how in the name of Jesus could that be comfortable?

The site description of the 'shorts' says:

"Dare to wear these fierce denim knickers girl. Featuring a denim material in a seriously flattering high rise style. Team these with some killer chap trousers and matching bralet for a show-stopping festival outfit that is gonna get you noticed for all of the right reasons."

And the most bizarre thing? THEY'RE SOLD OUT.

Although, if you could pull them off, why the hell not?

They cost 15 quid, and no doubt will be back in stock ASAP. Let us know if you get a pair.

Backed by the Abortion Rights Campaign, “Repeal” is a new Irish short film which was officially released on social media yesterday.

Written and directed by Karl Callan, “Repeal” is the story of three women and the difficulties they encounter in the face of abortion laws in Ireland.

The narratives within the film are all based on real life testimonies from people who have been directly affected by the 8th amendment.

Karl was inspired to make this film by cases such as Savita Halappanavar and the “Miss Y- case” and his goal is to shine a light on what is happening every day in Ireland as a result of the current law.

It is his hope that those who are currently undecided may feel inclined to vote Yes after seeing the film.

“I researched the stories, spoke with women I know that had been through similar situations. I also spoke to medical professionals and learned of the difficulties they go through as a result of the restrictions put on them.

"I wanted to be sure that the film was as realistic as possible,” says Callan Having seen “Repeal”, the Abortion Rights Campaign are happy to lend their support to the film and they gave a short talk in the IFI on Easter Saturday where the film has a private screening.

The film was produced by Karl Callan, Aaron McEnaney, Sofia Bwcka and includes a cast of Irish actors and filmmakers involved in Ireland's thriving film scene notably Maureen O'Connell (writer/director of Proclaim! Award-winning short film) and Lynette Callaghan (Raw, The Clinic).

Today is a very, very good day.

Aldi has introduced five new craft beers, priced from €1.89, available now for a limited time.

And sure, one of them is even gluten free – for all you gorge coeliacs.

Can I get a hallelujah?

Tom Doorley, Aldi Drinks Expert, says: "The Brown Bear beers, brewed in County Armagh, have real flavour and freshness, ideal as the evenings get longer and we look forward to summer.

O'Shea's are old favourites, with a crisp, characterful lager and an IPA with proper, refreshing hoppy bitterness."

The five groovy new beers are as follows:

Brown Bear Double IPA (5.2% ABV, 500ml, €2.39), which is a full bodied, copper coloured, IPA bursting with citrus fruits and tropical fruit flavours and aroma. An initially sweet impression gives way to an explosion of orange, pink grapefruit and tangerine.

We're drooling.

Brown Bear Gluten Free Lager  (4.1% ABV, 500ml, €1.99) is a crisp, straw coloured lager with a classic pilsner malt flavour and a clean lingering bitterness. A gentle hop aroma finishes this easy drinking lager.

And then we have Brown Bear India Pale Lager (5.2% ABV, 500ml, €1.99), which is a gold coloured, medium bodied lager style beer with a fresh aroma of lime, kiwi fruit and a hint of gooseberry on the finish.

Aldi have also included two beers from O'Shea's.

O'Shea's Irish Lager (5% ABV, 500ml, €1.89) has been brewed true to the craft traditions with the use of Irish Malts.

This lager is clean and crisp with subtle hints of sweetness due to the addition of a small amount of Caramalt. The longer period of rest allows the flavours to develop, offering a refreshing and balanced finish.

O'Shea's IPA (5% ABV, 500ml, €1.99) is bursting with flavour, and has been brewed with fresh grapefruit combined with a multitude of hop varieties including Cascade and Amarillo. These hops are added after different stages of the brew to give this refreshing IPA its intense citrus flavour.

Now I'm not particularly into beer, but these genuinely all sound delicious.

Anyone else thirsty?

To be a woman in Ireland is to constantly feel like your body is a battleground. From the upcoming referendum on the Eighth Amendment to the larger discussion around consent, it's clear we have a long way to go in terms of equal rights.

And let's be honest – it's exhausting combatting misogyny day in and day out. However, we have to keep fighting the good fight, and this playlist is here to keep you going.

These songs are for you to listen to while smashing the patriarchy – whether it's at protests, as the only woman working in your office, or while teaching your younger siblings that things can change.

It's comforting to hear the voices of these women who are still rocking, or who have come before us to pave the way for bad bitches like ourselves.

Without further ado, here are the songs that will make you feel like you can kick ass, or simply help you remember you are not alone:

Dream Wife – 'Somebody'

This trio, originally formed in Brighton, is the coolest thing on six legs. Rakel Mjöll (lead vocals), Alice Go (guitar and vocals), and Bella Podpadec (bass and vocals) met in art school and have been making sweet, sweet music together ever since.

Their 'bad bitches to the front' policy at their shows harkens back to the days of riot grrrl, when Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill and others would invite girls to come closest to the stage. And I'm not going to lie – at their latest gig in Dublin, I felt like I could dance freer than ever before knowing that there wasn't potentially a creepy dude trying to grind up behind me.

The song 'Somebody' in particular is near and dear to the hearts of the members of Dream Wife, and the words in it will resonate with many women. The lyrics 'You were a cute girl standing backstage/It was bound to happen' echo sentiments we've heard far too often in the news. One line stands out because of its simple truth. It should be painted on banners, written on toilet walls, and passed in every covert classroom note: 'I am not my body/I am somebody'.

Chastity Belt – 'Cool Slut'

Sexists often toss around the word 'slut' to degrade women, while praising men who sleep with multiple partners. In fact, when a man is referred to as a slut, people often tack on 'man' in front of it because we so strongly relate the term to women.

Well, Chastity Belt, an all-female indie rock band from Walla Walla, Washington, is taking back the term, à la the LGBT community's reclamation of 'queer'. The music video for the song shows band members Julia Shapiro, Lydia Lund, Annie Truscott, and Gretchen Grimm doing everyday things that sluts do – drink wine with their friends, hang out in the park, play instruments. Doing the actual slutty part takes up only a fraction of our days.

So here's to sluts everywhere – let's sing along together: 'To all the girls in the world/Trying to take off their shirts/Ladies it's okay to be/It's okay to be slutty'.

The Tuts – 'Dump Your Boyfriend'

A self-described 'three-tone girl band', these women are the best thing you've never heard of. Nadia Javed, Beverley Ishmael, and Harriet Doveton are vegans, feminists, and yes, we would like to be their best friends.Their bubblegum pop-punk sound is sure to get you singing into your hairbrush or moving on the dance floor.

To be honest, it was hard just picking one girl power song by them because their music is so imbued with feminism. Both 'Tut Tut Tut' and 'What's On The Radio?' voice their frustrations as female artists often passed over in favour of their mediocre male counterparts. 'Dump Your Boyfriend' is an absolute choon though, because we all know that one friend who needs to ditch the guy holding her back.

Anna Wise – 'BitchSlut'

This R&B artist is well known for her collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, and we can't help but love her after hearing her song 'BitchSlut'.

The lyrics capture how as women we can never get it right in the eyes of certain people – we are either too friendly or too cold. What we wear, the simple fact that we're sitting alone – a**holes will use any excuse to say we were asking for it. And if we say no? Well, we're automatically labelled a frigid bitch, obviously. Wise's dulcet tones perfect convey this catch-22 every woman finds herself in at some point in her life.

Mommy Long Legs – 'Cat Callers'

Like I said before, it can be exhausting battling sexism day in and day out. The members of Mommy Long Legs have their own wonderful antidote for this: humour.

Lilly Morlock (vocal and guitar), Cory Budden (drums), Melissa Kagerer (vocals and guitar), and Leah Miller (vocals and bass) wear wigs while they play what they have hilariously dubbed 'barf-core/fart-core/vomit garage'.

In an interview with The Le Sigh, the band said of their music: "We are naturally silly people. That’s why our music is funny. We also think that humour is a good way of addressing and coping with topics that are, a lot of times, hard to talk about… There is a feeling of reclamation, or power, in being able to turn a difficult situation into something humorous."

Indeed, 'Cat Callers' is about something serious – being yelled at on the street by creeps – but the band manages to poke fun at the topic while also not belittling the experience of the women being catcalled.

Princess Nokia – 'Tomboy'

Princess Nokia, a.k.a. Destiny Frasqueri, takes back her sexuality and flips the typical script of the male gaze in this powerful rap.

Frasqueri, who is of Afro-Puerto Rican and Taíno descent, spoke about the song with Djali of Mass Appeal, saying:

"Both of us being women (of colour), we understand the extent to which our image has been moulded by patriarchy—and colonialism, for that matter—forcing us to conform to archaic notions of 'beauty', and 'sex appeal' to please the male gaze. This song dismantles that entirely."

Bleached – 'Can You Deal?'

'Can You Deal?' asks the listener to not 'label or package me please'. It's a fitting message considering that Jennifer Clavin, who's on vocals, guitar, and synth in Bleached, compiled a zine with fellow female musicians (also called Can You Deal?) about how they'd like to be known for their talent and who they are, not simply for their gender.

Jennifer is joined by her sister Jessica Clavin on lead guitar and bass, with Micayla Grace also on bass and Nick Pillot on drums. In the zine, Jennifer recalls how she felt uncomfortable with society's expectations of what girls are supposed to be like, so she dressed up like a boy and went to punk shows. Even though she now enjoys expressing her feminine side, she still feels frustrated with how musicians who also happen to be women as well are treated by society.

As she says in Can You Deal?: "Labelling me as a woman puts me in a box and forces me to conform to gender roles. This ignores everything else I am."

Girli – 'Hot Mess'

Hmm, how to describe Girli? Brash, bold, and incredibly fun.

The 20-year-old London native perfectly captures the condescension women are often subjected to by cis straight guys in 'Hot Mess'. Whether it's about our knowledge or our looks, either way, it's annoying and belittling to be talked down to.

Girli always manages to get the upper hand, though, and changes the narrative by the end of the song so it is she instead who puts the puffed-up dude back in his place.

Bikini Kill – 'Rebel Girl'

We've got to include this classic! While the riot grrrl movement was by no means without its problems (intersectionality was not exactly its focus), Bikini Kill remains a watershed band in terms of female empowerment.

Kathleen Hanna (vocals), Tobi Vail (drums), Kathi Wilcox (bass), and Billy Karren (guitar) came together in the town of Olympia, Washington to start a revolution (or Revolution Girl Style Now! as their 1991 demo was called). They wanted to make feminism accessible in a time when people were saying the movement was dead, and they ended up giving hope to teenage girls everywhere who were fed up with the harassment they experienced in school, on the street, and at shows.

'Rebel Girl' loudly and proudly celebrates women who are unabashedly themselves. It's the ultimate lady love song, and a welcome battle cry in a society that so often pits women against each other. Why give in to tired narratives of jealousy when instead you can sing 'Rebel girl you are the queen of my world'?

Alien She – 'Death Sentence'

Katie O'Neill (vocals and guitar), Aoife McDonagh (bass and vocals), and Darragh McCabe (drums) are a trio of Irish artists who are brilliant on their own, but also shine in their genre-defying band Alien She. Their music proves both intelligent and expressive.

One notable example is 'Death Sentence', which is painfully honest in describing the issue of abortion in Ireland. 'People face this every day/Tell me what's it gonna take?' they sing in an angry plea.

As well, this track can be bought with a print or tote on their Bandcamp page to support the Goodbye 8 Campaign.

Today, The Irish Times has reported that an advertisement has appeared in a local newspaper, calling for Paddy Jackson and Stuart Olding to be banned from Ulster and Irish Rugby.

A group of 139 people, who have called themselves “concerned fans”, got money together in a crowdfunding campaign to pay for the advertisement in today's copy of the Belfast Telegraph.

The open letter reads:

“To the leadership of the Irish Rugby Football Union and Ulster Rugby…The content of social media exchanges involving Paddy Jackson and Stuart Olding was reprehensible.

“Such behaviour falls far beneath the standard that your organisations represent and as such we demand that neither of these men represents Ulster or Ireland now or at any point in the future.

“We expect an answer to this letter.”

It is signed off: “Yours, concerned fans.”

Last week in Belfast, Mr Olding and Mr Jackson were found not guilty of raping the same woman back in 2016. Mr Jackson was also found not guilty of a charge of sexual assault.

Two other men who were also involved in the case were acquitted.

Following the result of the trial, both Ulster Rugby and the IRFU said that a review process was under way to assess the futures of the two players.

A number of public demonstrations were held in cities across Ireland following the trial verdict, calling for a change in media reporting and sex education in schools.

As a result of these protests, the idea for the advertisement was born.

According to the report by The Irish Times, 'the crowdfunding campaign to publish the ad exceeded its €2,000 target within 36 hours.'

One of the organisers of the crowdfunded ad told the Belfast Telegraph: “A friend and I felt, like many people around the country do, that the WhatsApp exchanges as revealed in court goes against any moral standard of what can be considered acceptable behaviour.

“These players have a national and international platform and the IRFU and Ulster Rugby have a role to play in enforcing moral standards.”

Just when you think the beauty industry can't get any weirder, people start getting permanent nail art.

It has come to my attention that nail tattoos have been growing in popularity, and I'm intrigued.

My first thought? 'Jesus, that sounds like one painful procedure!'

However, according to Christian Boyd, a tattoo artist, the process of nail tattooing is actually completely painless.

The tattoo needle doesn’t actually pierce the nail or touch the skin, it only skims the surface – hence the lack of pain.

And while the ink is technically permanent, your nails are not.

The tattoo will simply grow out with your nail, and then you can start all over again with a new design.

“Knowing that you have this permanent thing that’s not actually permanent—it’s a little bit of a safety zone,” Boyd said to Vogue recently.

And while I may have been a bit unsure at first, I am now totally convinced by this groovy new beauty trend (and I desperately want to give it a go).

If you find yourself in NYC in the coming months, you can visit the Needle Nails shop in the East Village and give it a whirl.

Just take a look at these amazing nail designs, and try not to fall in love.

Okay, so I am far from vegan, and truthfully I'm pretty sceptical of vegan recipes.

When I first saw the recipe for vegan pulled pork, I initially thought to myself 'what a crock of shit.'

However, I was wrong, and while it certainly isn't the real deal, this recipe is as close as you can get to the real deal.

Seriously, it is delicious.

Image result for vegan gif

Ok what do you need:

For the pulled pork

1x 400g tin of unripe green jackfruit

2 teaspoons of ground smoked paprika

3 cloves of garlic, crushed

4 tablespoons of tamari/ soy sauce

2 tablespoons of tomato puree

2 tablespoons of cider vinegar

2 tablespoons of neutral tasting oil (sunflower)

4 tablespoons of water

2 tablespoons of maple syrup

To serve

4 burger buns

1/4 portion of vegan coleslaw

Handful of fresh rocket

1 ripe avocado

Image result for happy pear pulled pork

Then what?

1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius.

2. Shred the jackfruit into little strips, pulling it apart with your hands and removing any seeds or tough, ligament type bits. Transfer to a colander and rinse under cold water, then set aside.

3. Now to make the barbecue sauce. Put the paprika, garlic, tamari, tomato puree, vinegar, oil, water and maple syrup into a medium sized bowl and mix well with a fork. Add the jackfruit, mixing very well with your hands to coat it all with the sauce. Spread the marinated jackfruit out well on a baking tray and bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, or until it starts to brown and crisp slightly.

4. Now assemble the sandwiches. Put a healthy serving of your vegan pulled pork onto each burger bun, along with a few spoonfuls of coleslaw and some rocket. Fling on a few slices of avocado, and you're good to go.

DELICIOUS.

We got this recipe from the new book 'The Happy Pear, Recipes for Happiness' by the two lads. 10/10 would recommend to a friend.
