Advocate, model and TV  presenter Katie Piper has released an emotional statement following the news that the man who attacked her ten years ago is to be released on parole, after serving only nine years of a life sentence.

Katie, who is currently preparing to appear in Strictly Come Dancing, was victim to a horrific crime after her boyfriend ordered a man to throw acid at her as she was leaving her home in London. She was left permanently scared as a result of the life-altering attack.

Stefan Sylvestre was given a life sentence in 2009 – her then-boyfriend Daniel Lynch was also jailed for the attack as well as assaulting Piper – but is to be released after serving less than ten years of his sentence.

Katie took to Instagram to thank her fans, and well-wishers for their support, during what she says is "a really difficult time" as she adjusts to the devastating news.

"It was important to put my message out to my friends, supporters and followers. This is a really difficult time for me," she wrote. "I am trying to come to terms with this decision, and this is something I need to deal with."

As she is currently rehearsing for her appearance in Strictly, the 34-year-old said it was a welcome distraction, despite the news.

A post shared by K A T I E P I P E R (@katiepiper_) on

The Parole Board confirmed Sylvestre was being released after an oral hearing, adding that Piper also read statements in person to the panel.

“Decisions are solely focused on whether a prisoner would represent a significant risk to the public after release,” a spokesperson said.

“The panel will have carefully looked at a whole range of evidence, including details of the original evidence and any evidence of behaviour change.”

In her autobiography, Katie previously revealed her fears that her attacker could be released from prison early after he applied for parole – he was denied the first time this happened as he was still deemed a threat to society.

"The two of them had taken so much from me, and now this man’s punishment might soon be over. I thought, ‘I’m the one with the life sentence, not him. He can change his identity, change his name, get a new job, a partner, move on, but I can’t. I can’t pretend it didn’t happen because it’s all over my face.’"

Despite enduring such a traumatic event, Piper, also a mum-of-two, has become an incredible advocate, lending her support in numerous causes and even setting up the Katie Piper Foundation to aid other burn victims.

She is nothing short of inspirational. One year on from the attack she also starred in a documentary called ‘Katie: My Beautiful Face’, to document her journey and it received over 3.3 million viewers.

Many students will be on the hunt for accommodation ahead of the new college term, and the Property Services Regulatory Authority (PSRA) are urging those seeking lettings to "exercise vigilance".

The warning comes after the PSRA was made aware of a number of bogus letting agents and their attempts to extract financial payments from prospective tenants.

These bogus agents appear in the main to operate online and are purporting to use a PSRA licence number. All Letting Agents, Auctioneers, Estate Agents and Management Agents operating in the Republic of Ireland must hold a PSRA licence to provide a property service.

The individual licence is a credit card size licence which has the licensee name, photographic identification and a unique 12 digit PSRA licence number. When using a property service provider, it is advisable to ask the property service provider to show you their licence which they are obliged to have available for inspection.

"The month of August is a time when students are starting or returning to college or university and a higher number of lettings take place," CEO of the PSRA Maeve Hogan said in a statement.

"Students seeking to rent accommodation are strongly advised to exercise vigilance to ensure they do not fall foul of bogus letting agents and are not using an unlicensed operator."

The PSRA publishes a public register of Licensed Property Services Providers where you can check the validity of a licence. The register can be found on www.psr.ie and displays both the licensee name and licence number – it is important to check that both the name and number of the agent you are in contact with correspond with the details displayed on the register.

If you are in any doubt as to whether a letting agent is licensed, you can contact the PSRA on 046 9033800 or info@psr.ie. Unlicensed letting agents, auctioneers, estate agents and management agents are breaking the law and do not provide any consumer protection. Anyone aware of unlicensed operators is urged to contact the PSRA at info@psr.ie.

It seems we are fond of our drink.

Our cheeky glass of wine or night out with the gals have earned us a reputation of drinking more daily, than our male counterparts on an international scale.

A study conducted by the University of Washington, says Irish women are consuming three alcoholic beverages a day.

Whereas the lads aren't so thirsty – having around four and a half drinks a day.

In fact, Irish men don't even make it into the top ten for male drinking on a global scale.

However, we are now seventh in the world for our daily consumption of alcohol.- Opps.

The Global Burden of Diseases study was completed by the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), warns us to watch our wine.

The study said our habit of having a cheeky glass of wine could be very deceptive.

Unbeknownst to women, instead of having one measure we could actually be pouring ourselves three measures in one glass of wine.

The scientists compiled figures from 694 data sources and 592 studies to gather information on 195 countries from 1990 to 2016.

The countries with the biggest death rates associated to alcohol among 15 to 49-year-olds in 2016, were Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, Mongolia, Latvia, Kazakhstan, Lesotho, Burundi, and the Central African Republic.

Kuwait, Iran, Palestine, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Jordan, Syria, the Maldives and Singapore had the lowest rates of death in the same year.

According to their findings which was published in the Lancet journal, even one daily drink could potentially increase the chances of contracting 23 alcohol-related health problems.

Alcohol use is a leading risk factor for disease burden worldwide, accounting for nearly 10 percent of global deaths among populations aged 15–49 years, says the study.

In 2016, 2.8 million deaths were attributed to alcohol use and it was ranked as the seventh leading risk factor for premature death and disability, according to the report.

“The health risks associated with alcohol are massive,” said Dr Emmanuela Gakidou of the IHME and the senior author of the study.

“Our findings are consistent with other recent research, which found clear and convincing correlations between drinking and premature death, cancer, and cardiovascular problems.

"Zero alcohol consumption minimises the overall risk of health loss.”

Currently, most alcohol guidelines says there are health benefits associated with consuming up to two drinks per day.

However, the researchers insist that their findings show that the safest level of drinking is none.

“There is a compelling and urgent need to overhaul policies to encourage either lowering people’s levels of alcohol consumption or abstaining entirely,” she said.

“The myth that one or two drinks a day are good for you is just that – a myth. This study shatters that myth.”

Kiss goodbye to the naggins, shoulders and bottles of wine.

If this study is to be heeded: It's time we clean up our act or it could lead us to some serious health problems.

And to make matters worse: the weekend is only hours away.

Last night, three of Love Island's most beloved stars descended on Dublin.

Samira Mighty, Laura Anderson and Kazamir Crossley flew in to attend a star studded bash for the  launch of the PS… Loves Easilocks collection, which lands in Penneys stores today.

The gals looked super glam, and decided to make a night of it before catching their 7am flight back to the UK.

The girls were each wearing Easilocks extension pieces from the new range, and took to the catwalk on the night in the RHC Gallery on Ely Place to showcase their new do's.

The trio partied at Dublin hotspot House, along with the Easilocks crew.

Despite Laura declaring she wasn't able for shots, the three indulged in a round of baby Guinness shots.

Laura and Samira showcased their night on Instagram., while Kaz kept the evening private without posting

We hope they weren't too hungover on the flight!

Make sure to hurry up and book that last minute holiday to Spain, Bali, or wherever you can soak up the last bits of summer sunshine.

It seems the Ryanair strikes are finally over!

Which means we can finally fly somewhere without the possibility of cancelled flights looming over us.

Yesterday, after months of pilots’ disputes, the airline company reached an agreement with the trade union Fórsa, according to The Irish Times.

But it wasn’t easy for the two parties to find a settlement that satisfied the union pilots and the low-cost airline.

It took long nights, copious amounts of caffeine, and compromise from both sides.

And finally, after 22 hours of negotiation from Wednesday to Thursday morning, they found a way to end the ongoing disputes.

The verbal deal is not quite set in stone yet, for it is set to go to ballot where it will be voted on by about 100 Dublin-based, Ryanair pilots.

Nevertheless, the company seems confident the agreement will be passed as it will be backed by both the pilots and Fórsa representatives.

Due to the pilots' hectic travel schedule, the ballot is predicted to take two weeks to organise.

Both Ryanair and Fórsa have been instructed not to discuss the details of the reached proposal until the ballot is over.

The Ryanair strikes have resulted in five days of strike action by about 100 Dublin-based pilots.

Ryanair pilots in Germany, Ireland, Sweden, Belgium and the Netherlands also took part in the strikes, resulting in the largest walkout for the airline ever.

We are so glad that an agreement has been reached that works for both the pilots and the airline.

Now, we can book those last minute holidays and enjoy the little while of summer we have left.

The results are in for the most Instagrammed food in the UK, and it’s not what you think.

Our Insta feeds are usually full of delectable burgers, homemade pasta, and gluten-free treats, but surprisingly, none of these made the cut.

A post shared by Mia Zarlengo, MS, RD (@bitesbymi) on

And even though basic bitches are constantly snapping the perfect angles of their overpriced eggs benedict smothered in hollandaise sauce beside their bottomless mimosas, brunch food did not make the top slot either.

A post shared by Samantha Schwartz (@phlfoodstagram) on

So what did?

Curry dishes were reported as the number one food to flood Instagram’s feed, according to data analysis done by Stay in Cornwall.

The delicious, Asian dish was followed by avocado, fish and chips, and Yorkshire pudding.

We were shocked that curry overtook avocado in the ranking, since the green fruit has been all the rage recently.

Avocado BLTs, avocado salads, avocado toast – even avocado ice cream has taken over the Internet, dominating millennials diets all over social media.

A post shared by Sydney Boyd (@turnipyourlife) on

Nevertheless, bowls of spicy Jalfrezi and Madras soaking over rice have won the popular Insta vote, with over double the amount of avocado pics posted this past year.

The rest of the photogenic foods ranked as followed:

  1. Curry – 551,701

  2. Avocado – 271,789

  3. Fish and chips – 63,856

  4. Yorkshire pudding – 51,556

  5. Cream tea – 45,189

  6. Sausage roll – 29,113

  7. Trifle – 11,359

  8. Chip butty – 9,121

  9. Cornish pasty – 6,393

  10. Beef Wellington – 2,432

There is undoubtedly some bang-on hangover foods here like fish and chips, sausage rolls, and chip butties.

It seems the UK’s current guilty pleasure is late-night, curry takeaways, and we wonder what it will be next year.

Perhaps avocado will take the lead, but until then keep calm and curry on.

Instagram has become the go-to place to find body positive activists doing their thang and spreading the love.

Michelle Elman is one such activist, who fills her page with quotes, photos and inspiration for those looking to love themselves a little more.

People flock to Michelle's page for body-positive affirmations, and she reminds her followers that while she is happy in herself, there is no true secret to being body positive.

A post shared by Michelle Elman (@scarrednotscared) on

Michelle took a step outside of the usual narrative, to remind followers that body positivity is a journey.

'Well I'll tell you the secret… there is no secret. Yes there are things to learn, and mindsets to shift but there is no "secret". There is no quick fix.'

'It's a bunch of small baby steps that unfortunately you never got to see along the way because I didn't have an Instagram account when I was going through them. In fact, Instagram didn't exist. I was 15 when I was going through exactly what you are going through now.'

A post shared by Michelle Elman (@scarrednotscared) on

'It was just luck of the draw, that I went through it early. It is just lucky that I was so overwhelmed by diet culture that I screamed "STOP" younger.

'I know most of you look at my page and want to be where I am now but to those of you who are new to this, please listen to me when I say 1) You are not going to get there overnight 2) You can not rush the process 3) It won't be a linear uphill journey. 4) There will be some days where you question if you made any progress whatsoever 5) It is worth it 6) The process is part of the fun.'

A post shared by Michelle Elman (@scarrednotscared) on

'Body positivity is an action. You do it ever single day. You do it when you stop yourself right before you are about to mention a diet. You do it when you intervene on body shaming. You do it when you look in the mirror and tell yourself how much you love you, even when you don't want to. You do it when you stop a fat girl in the street to tell her how amazing she looks.'

'What you put into body positivity, you get out of it. This is not an online movement. This is a real life, let's f*****g accept everyone's bodies and while we are at it, love ourselves movement,' she finished.

While pretty quotes are ideal for a little boost, Michelle's real and raw depiction of journeying to self love really hits home.

Instagram and YouTube alike are constantly awash with videos of mammoth makeup collections, with hundreds of gurus showing off their colour coordinated collections in clear plastic Ikea drawers.

There can be major pressure to purchase the hottest new palette or highlighter as soon as it drops, with celebrities and beauty influencers alike promoting new items, doing first reaction videos and reviews.

Believe it or not, it's actually pretty hard to use up all of that makeup.

Yeah, you might hit pan on one or two shades in an eyeshadow palette, but then the other seven, eleven or even twenty-odd shades are left with barely a swatch taken from them.

A post shared by Amona (@amonabeauty) on

There are a community of makeup-lovers out there who have realised that hoarding more makeup then you could ever possibly use potentially isn't the best use of their time or resources.

People truly feel they need the hottest new drop from a big name brand, but actually if they rummaged around in their current collection they could probably find something similar.

The Project Panning community have created a corner of the social media stratosphere for themselves, and they're all about using up every last inch of their beauty products.

They share tips on how to use up tricky shades in well-known palettes, and track how long it takes them to hit pan on different makeup items.

Many Project Panners take on challenges, such as not purchasing any new products until they have used up five of their current ones, or limiting themselves to purchasing a certain number of products per year.

A post shared by Go minimal (@go.minimal) on

According to one Reddit user, there are a number of reasons someone would want to get involved in panning.

'I pan because I want to get rid of something and I don't like throwing things away,' said Reddit user vitriolicheart.

'Although recently I'm getting more along the lines of if I can see the pan and I don't really like it I don't have to finish it.'

'Some are because I want rid, one I chose because I just wanted to see if I could pan a lipstick this year.I can't remember the last time I actually used one up.'

'My last pan was a cream foundation and it was one I'd forgotten about. I opened it and it was almost gone.Easy to pan and great to see it gone.'

'I really don't need to buy any more things. Most satisfying pan for me is the stuff I don't really like. Once it's empty, it done and I can move onto better things.'

Obviously using things up until their gone isn't a new concept, anyone who wants to minimise waste and get the most value out of a product will use it up until the last drop.

The community has roots in minimalism, but has gone from strength to strength as beauty gurus and online influencers have made early releases of products public knowledge, and flog a new contour palette every other week.

The mantra is 'using what you have, and not giving in to the misconception that you must buy new makeup every time a pretty new product comes out,' according to Rachel Smith, lifestyle blogger at Budgets and Kale

A post shared by @faultierlicious on

There are no hard and fast rules, if you really want that new ABH palette, no one is going to excommunicate you for it, it's you versus your makeup.

However, with the constant promotion of makeup products across social media, some are joining the panning community to combat a makeup addiction.

'One day I stumbled across YouTube beauty videos,' said makeup videographer and panning community member Lauren Mae, in a recently uploaded YouTube video.

'I started buying things… I had a little bit of extra cash and whatever I had I would spend on makeup. I always had packages coming to the house.'

'For a long time it was just buying when I could, it wasn't super intense, no addiction starts out insane at the beginning. I spent all my extra money on it, I loved it I was super enthusiastic about it.'

'Fast forward…I spent so much money on makeup. It's crazy. When I think about that money it makes me cry a little and cringe inside. I would make super large purchases… buying like the apocalypse was about to happen,' she continued in the video.

'I had to have every new release, I had everything, I loved putting it in my Ikea drawers, I was full blown obsessed with makeup.'

Lauren goes on to describe how the secrecy of her makeup buying made her realise she had a problem, after she began diverting packages from her own house so that her partner wouldn't see how much product she had purchased.

'I would always have stuff sent to my Mom's house because I didn't want packages showing up at my house. At least five or six packages a week were coming to my Mom's house.'

'I definitely used my Mom's house to kind of hide everything I was bringing in. It's not that he didn't know about me spending the money but I just didn't want it in his face, I didn't want to get questioned on why I was buying so much makeup. '

'I loved watching videos and being able to like mentally check off and be like "oh, I have that," "oh, I have that." It's like I'm almost living this life of a beauty guru but in my own home and in a totally different world than them.'

'It was more than just wanting it, it was like all that mattered was getting it, there was like this rush and almost this high to buying. I wanted to swatch it and use it a couple of times, but then after that, that feeling goes away and you have to go and fill it with something else,' she continued.

'The beauty community has changed a lot, there are so many new releases it's not even possible to buy everything anymore.'

This rush and ebb of feelings made Lauren realise she didn't want to continue in that cycle anymore.

It was then that she discovered the trend of filming 'empties' videos on YouTube, in which gurus and gals alike talk about products they have completely used up.

She became drawn to the concept of having used up empty products in her collection rather than full products, and stumbled upon the project panning community.

A post shared by @liveandletlush on

Lauren, like many, kicked off her panning journey with the Project 10 Pan Challenge, in which members use up 10 items before buying any new ones, and so became full on besotted with the community.

Now, Lauren's story has been seen by over 55,000 people and project panning is on the rise.

The community is quick to emphasise that it's not there to shame anyone. If you want to exchange you hard earned cash for new beauty releases then you do you, boo.

However, project panning is growing online, as consciousness takes over consumerism, but always with a hint of competitiveness.

This week, Kendall Jenner, the most soft spoken member of the famous family, got some serious shade thrown at her for a statement she made to Love Magazine about the modelling industry.

'Since the beginning we’ve been super selective about what shows I would do,' she said.

'I was never one of those girls who would do like 30 shows a season or whatever the f*ck those girls do.'

A post shared by Kendall (@kendalljenner) on

'More power to 'em. But I had a million jobs, not only catwalks but everything else.'

The comments understandably caused major backlash from the modelling community, with a number of high profile models taking to social media to condemn Jenner for her words.

However, the Love Magazine cover girl has since retracted her statement, claiming it was 'twisted' and taken 'out of context.'

'I was misrepresented in a recent interview over the weekend & it’s important to clarify the meaning,' she wrote on Twitter.

'It was intended to be entirely complimentary but unfortunately, my words were twisted & taken out of context. I want to be clear. The respect that I have for my peers is immeasurable!'

'I get to experience first hand their tireless commitment, their work ethic, the endless days, the lack of sleep, separation from family and friends, stress of travelling, the toll on physical and mental health, yet they still make it all look effortless and beautiful.'

'I’m inspired by so many of these people i have had the good fortune to work alongside! There’s no way i could EVER hate on that i want everyone to win. SLAY ALWAYS.'

A post shared by Kendall (@kendalljenner) on

Model Alliance, an advocacy group for people working in the global fashion industry in the modelling area, made a public statement inviting Jenner to join their movement, calling on brands and agencies to respect the limits of their models to create a safer environment free from abuse.

Taking to Instagram, the alliance's statement reads: 'We appreciate your candor in your recent interview for Love Magazine about the importance of mental health and your struggle to maintain a healthy work-life balance. We also understand that some of your original comments might not represent fully what you meant and may have been taken out of context. Nonetheless, we wanted to explain why many models reacted the way they did.'

'Many working and aspiring models — girls who aspire to have a career as successful as yours — struggle with various abuses on the job in what remains a largely unregulated industry.'

A post shared by Model Alliance (@modelallianceny) on

'Sexual harassment and assault, pressures to lose weight, late and nonpayment, relentless work hours, and excessive, unexplained fees that leave models working in debt to their agencies are among the many problems that models routinely face.'

'Unfortunately, despite our organization’s efforts over the last several years to address these concerns, we have faced significant pushback from the industry — and models’ fears of retaliation for speaking out about the abuses they suffer are very real.'

'The good news is that we have the solution: the RESPECT Program. RESPECT is a global, industry-wide initiative to ensure that everyone working in the fashion industry is treated with dignity and respect on the job.'

'Your agency and other companies in the industry have the opportunity to join RESPECT, a program that over 100 models, including many of the industry’s leading names, publicly support.'

Jenner has yet to respond to the invitation.

The Hills is coming back to our TV screens on MTV, and while we won't be reliving our fashion faux pas of the 00s era, we're excited to get all nostalgic with the new series.

Several of the original cast members will be returning, including the infamous Heidi and Spencer, but some of the lead characters won't be taking back their old roles.

Lauren Conrad, forever known as the girl who didn't go to Paris ( #NeverForget) told E! in 2016 that she wouldn't consider doing a The Hills reboot, saying: 'I'm so proud of what we did and I feel like I ended on such a great note. And also, I'm such a snooze. No one needs to see that!'

Drama llama Kristin Cavallari  has also not signed up to rejoin the cast, which is a real shame as she was undoubtedly one of the most entertaining members.

To make up for the loss of two stand-out cast members, it has been reported that MTV are looking outside of the OG line up to fill the cast.

Emergency shelters have opened, mobile alerts have been received and the rain is pouring.

Hawaiians are now bracing themselves for landfall of one of the worst hurricanes to hit the Islands since Hurricane Iniki in 1992.

The path of the hurricane is forecasted to pass very close to the north-west of the islands today and tomorrow.

As Hurricane Lane draws closer, emergency shelters on Wednesday opened their doors on the Big Island and on the islands of Maui, Molokai and Lanai.

In fear of the roads becoming impassable on the south coast of Molokai, officials warned residents who require shelter to get there sooner rather than later.

Shelters were made available today on the island of Oahu, as the island received a weather warning late yesterday.

The Mayor of the Island, Kirk Caldwell, issued a warning this morning for Islanders to brace themselves for the impending weather event.

"O'ahu us now under a Hurricane Warning, meaning that we are now less than 36 hours from potential hurricane weather conditions. Please ensure that you and your family are prepared," he said.

Currently, Hurricane Lane is ranked as a category four storm out of five on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.

It means the storm has the potential to bring winds of 130 to 156mph.

Officials have said that the storm could be downgraded to a category three by Thursday afternoon.

However, that is still a major weather event and could bring winds of 111-129 mph causing devastating damage.

The impact of the approaching hurricane is already being felt on the Big Island.

Flash floods warnings are in place.

Over the last 12 hours, it has been reported that 8" of rain has fallen on the Big Island.

The slow movement of the storms increases the threat for prolonged heavy rainfall, said NWSHonolulu.

Governor David Ige issued a warning to residents this morning, saying:

"Due to potential hazards & emergency vehicle operations, travel in coastal areas & ocean recreation should be avoided. Large breaking surf, significant shorebreak, & dangerous currents make entering the water extremely hazardous and could face significant injury or death."

Hawaii doesn't usually get hit with central Pacific storms as bad as Hurricane Lane.

The last major hurricane was Iniki in 1992 which claimed the lives of six people and injured more than 100.

The 1992 storm caused an estimated $3 billion in damage.

Public schools will remain closed for the rest of the week.

Local government workers are urged to remain home unless they are essential employees.
