A Donegal teenager has won the covetable Foróige Young Entrepreneur of the Year award, and for a very unique business endeavour.

The teen has set up a completely gender neutral clothing line in Ireland.

Sixteen-year-old Katie McGloin started the business six months ago, called KT Clothing.

The entrepreneur believes that gender-neutral clothes were not the same as unisex clothing, and set out to create a truly non-gendered line.

Katie came up with the concept when she realised that there were very few clothing options for people who don't want to dress particularly feminine or particularly masculine.

"There is no set gender for any of our items and they can be worn in a number of different styles depending on the individual," reads the brand manifesto.

The range, which features positive messages on the clothing such as "I am myself," and "stand out," is available online.

KT Clothing joins the gender neutral clothing market in Ireland with very little competition.

Previously established brands include Sugs and Snails, which specialises in creating non-gendered tights for children and adults.

When we think of domestic abuse or violence, we tend to automatically associate it with bruises; but the emotional and psychological aspect of an abusive relationship is just as damaging.

In actual fact, not all cases of domestic abuse involve physical violence, and research has shown that the emotional consequences of an abusive relationship – such as fear, distress and loss of confidence – can, in some instances, be the most damaging.

Indeed, according to a national survey conducted in 2003, both men and women who had endured domestic abuse admitted that the emotional consequences were the ‘worst thing’ about that experience.

And even where physical violence has not yet become a factor in that abuse, the emotional and psychological aspect can be a predictor of a more physical fallout going forward.

So, how do you define emotional or psychological abuse? Cosc (The National Office for the Prevention of Domestic, Sexual and Gender-based Violence) lists the following examples as characteristic of an abusive relationship:

  • Constant putdowns
  • Humiliating a partner in front of others
  • Hypercriticism
  • Constantly monitoring what their partner is doing
  • Excessive jealousy
  • Accusations of infidelity
  • Belittling accomplishments and goals
  • Use of intimidation or threats to gain compliance
  • Preventing them from seeing their family and friends
  • Threatening to hurt people they care about, and pets
  • Unreasonable demands
  • Threatening to remove access to children
  • Threatening suicide
  • Making their partner question their sanity
  • Emotional manipulation
  • Restricting their partner’s mobility and communications

The focus, from the perpetrator’s point of view, is to exert dominance over their partner, feeling in charge, attacking their self-esteem and isolating them from loved ones who could provide support.

Signs that an individual may be experiencing emotional and psychological domestic abuse

  • They are anxious to please their partner
  • They are afraid of their partner
  • They talk about their partner’s temper, possessiveness or jealousy
  • They are restricted from seeing family and friends
  • They are limited in access to money or a car
  • They are depressed, anxious or suicidal
  • They seem to have very low self-esteem
  • They are acting submissive

Signs that an individual may be a perpetrator of emotional and psychological domestic abuse

  • They act excessively jealous of their partner
  • They insult or embarrass their partner in public
  • They yell at/try to intimidate their partner

What to do next:

For a loved one or friend

Your next move is very important; it’s only natural that you want to help, and you can – but you need to handle this sensitive situation very, very carefully.

The first step is to express concern. Look for a private moment when you can have a word with the individual, and begin by asking them if they are OK. Let them know that you are concerned about them, and assure them that you are there if they ever need support or someone to talk to. The important thing here is not to push them if they don’t feel like opening up.

The next step is to assure them that the abuse they are experiencing is not their fault. Use positive, affirming statements such as: ‘No one deserves to be treated this way’ and ‘You are not to blame’.

While you should most definitely offer your support and an ear to talk to, avoid giving advice. What you can do is encourage them to make their own decisions, and provide them with a list of resources. Check out www.whatwouldyoudo.ie for reference and advice.

For a stranger

The situation can be slightly different if you suspect or witness abuse between strangers. If you have decided that a situation requires an intervention, and you are happy that it is safe to do so, Cosc (The National Office for the Prevention of Domestic, Sexual and Gender-based Violence) advises that you follow the ‘three D’ formula: Distract, Delegate, and Direct.

Distract

The goal here is to prevent the situation from getting worse, or to buy enough time to check in with the potential victim. An example of distraction is to ask for directions. This way, you could potentially distract the person about to commit violence, or get a moment alone to ask the victim if there is a problem.

Delegate

Do you know a friend of the victim who could help? If so, have a word with them and express your concern. If there is no one nearby who is close to the victim, and you feel the situation doesn’t call for Garda involvement, look for someone who might be in a better position than you to get involved – for example, a bouncer.

Direct

This involves approaching either the potential victim or potential abuser, and intervening yourself. Remember that you are putting yourself in a potentially dangerous situation, so it’s best to make your actions subtle: use body language to express disapproval, and make your concern known by keeping an eye on the situation. If you choose a direct approach, express your concern with a statement like, ‘I’m concerned about what just happened? Is anything wrong?’

Over 300,000 people in Ireland have been severely abused by a partner at some point in their lives. If you have witnessed or experienced domestic violence/abusive behaviour by a partner, or you are concerned you have abused someone, you can prevent it from happening again.

Disney is having a bit of love affair with live-action remakes, and after the success of Beauty and the Beast, we're not surprised.

The Lion King is the next cartoon classic set to get a realistic makeover, and Beyoncé  is the front runner to voice the female lead, Nala.

The Grammy Award winning singer has not yet made a decision about taking the role, according to Variety

A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on

The star has not yet accepted the role on the basis that she is currently enjoying her pregnancy with twins, but producers are reportedly more than happy to accommodate the busy mum's schedule.

Donald Glover is set to voice Simba , while James Earl Jones will be taking up his original role as Mufasa, who he gave a voice to in the 1994 film.

The Lion King would be Queen B's first movie role in quite a while, but the star is quite accustomed to being on the big screen.

Beyoncé was well received in her role in Dreamgirls. She has also previously appeared in Austin Powers, where she adopted the persona of Foxxy Cleopatra.

She has also performed in another voice-over role in Epic as Queen Tara, and she gave a dramatic display in the thriller Obsessed.

We seriously hope she takes the role!

If you love a Cadbury's creme egg or Reese's butter cups are your fave, then we have good news for you.

Reese's have created peanut butter creme eggs and we are oh so very delighted.

Reese's new eggs come in packs of five and each contain individually wrapped milk chocolate eggs stuffed with a salty, smooth peanut butter filling (could it get any better?).

Reese's now do a peanut butter creme egg and ooh it sounds amazing

What's more, they come with a little purple spoon so you can scoop out all the good stuff before eating the chocolate shell.

As always though, there's a catch.

The peanut butter eggs are only available in America right now, so if you know anyone heading over there, make sure to nag them so they'll bring you back a butt-load.

Even though it's a little bit milder out, the weekend isn't looking too great weather-wise.

Temperatures are expected to reach up to 17C (hell yeah), however, rain, thunder and hail are possibly on the way (boo!).

Even though today was dry, Met Éireann say that this evening will have "showery rain," which will be "widespread with some thundery bursts, especially in western areas."

Tomorrow, Friday March 31, will have a "very wet start" in Leinster and Munster, with a few downpours expected. Temperatures will reach 15C, which is some sort of silver lining, we guess?

Saturday looks crap enough though, with the risk of hail and showers.

The Met Éireann website reads: "Most of the shower activity will affect the western half of the country, with parts of the east escaping fully dry.

"Saturday night will be dry and cold, with slack breezes, temperatures down to freezing in places, with some frost and also some mist and fog."

Across the pond there seems to be a heatwave… SMH.

If you grew up in Ireland, it's pretty likely that you were somewhat mollycoddled by your mother and family.

Did she really tell you the ins and outs of menstruation and sex, or did you have to figure a few things out for yourself?

Did she tell you about trailblazing lesbians or women in science? Some did, some didn't, but either way, the Stuff Mom Never Told You podcast is an absolute must.

Black Pen on White Writing Spring Notebook Between White Ipad and White Ceramic Mug With Latte on White Plate

If you've never heard of it before, it comes from the absolute giant How Stuff Works. The series, presented by Cristen and Caroline, is a treasure trove of variable topics, and covers everything from social justice warriors, to wartime prostitutes, body shaming and even the history of fashion models.

So, basically, there's something for everyone.

Here are four of our favourite from the past few weeks:

Social Justice Warriors

"Can social media change the world? So-called social justice warriors, slactivists and hashtag activists think so," reads the episode description.

"In this episode, Cristen and Caroline dissect social media activism and its backlash and ponder the perils of political correctness."

Living Dolls: A History of Fashion Modelling

"When did models begin strutting down the catwalk?

In the episode synopsis, it says, "Cristen and Caroline size up the history of modelling and how it's influenced beauty culture at large," which is interesting to find out about.

Were mediums the first feminists?

"What are mediums, and what did they have to do with the early suffragists?

In this episode, you will "join Caroline and Cristen as they explore the role of women in the spiritualist movement and divine its connections to feminism in this episode."
