Yearly Archives: 2017

Fyre Festival has been feeling the heat over the past few days after what was billed as a luxury music getaway turned into a bona fide disaster.

The getaway in the Bahamas was presented as the ultimate glamorous, high-end festival experience, with the promo video featuring celebrity models like Bella Hadid and Chanel Iman frolicking in the sun.

However, when festival attendees arrived to the private island in the Exumas, the festival was far from ready to host a high-quality experience, with limited infrastructure and only the most basic of essentials.

Now, the festival has put plans in place to smooth the disaster over, but rather than just giving everyone a refund, they have opted to offer ticket-holders an alternative solution.

Rather than getting their money back, attendees must fill out a form for compensation, which has two options.

The first is to trade their old tickets for VIP passes to next year's festival, the second is to pass up the opportunity of 'adventure' and get a refund.

'We have received support and commitment from several musicians to perform at next year's event. We would be so thankful to have your support as well,' reads the form, which was shared by The New York Times reporter Joe Coscarelli.

'Currently 81% of guests who have filled out the refund application have said they would like to attend Fyre Festival 2018,' a Fyre Festival rep told Rolling Stone.

'We are so thankful for their support and excitement as we strive to make this right.'

A teenage disco was a wondrous thing.

We all lived for them; probably because they were the only thing on our social event calendar, but you could be sure that everyone would attend.

Your frenemie, your camogie team, your next door neighbour, your crew, and of course, that lad you fancied.

It was a simple time when we all wore babydoll dresses and begged our mammies to drop us down the road from the local GAA.

And you could be sure that one mate would get langers by drinking a measly sip of Fat Frog, amirite?

The 2 Johnnies perfectly depicted all of this in their new video, and yes, they totally nailed it.

Has anything really changed?!

There have been some seriously powerful and positives statements made in the body positive community lately, with women stepping forward and speaking out about the harsh ways that society polices women's beauty standards.

Now, one plus size model has spoken out about the issue of shapewear.

KhrystyAna posted a series of images of the red ridges and circulation issues her body has endured from shapewear, which perfectly punctuate her mission statement about the garments.

'Oh how we love our shapers, our tight jeans, bras that obsessively embrace us so much to only suffocate our natural form,' she said.

'Oh why woman, why? I can't go a day without seeing an ad of these new body shaping suits, because apparently small waist, thick butt and large DD's are what we should ALL look like. The ads that literally tell you "Self hate is cool, wear this, this makes you look hot an appealing to the masses because you aren't, for only $24.99!".'

'Woman, oh how we love a little pain here and there, waxing, tweezing, tanning/burning, bleaching, scrubbing… that's fine. Nothing against what we want, but tell me woman, is that what you really truly want? Or you are sold to want it?'

'Tell me woman, is your body not the most magnificent fascinating universe that could use your compassion? Do you real want to stop your blood circulation now with those tight shapers to become media's dream?… on one of the images see my BLUE legs, poor babies from wearing a shaper for few hours.'

'How do you like the reality of impeded blood circulation, infertility, digestive problems, nerve damage and more. Yes these images of me today are terrifying to many of you, especially that scar (I have them on both feet), from wearing VERY SEXY high heels. I bled.. and now this scar but BOY, MY FEET LOOKED SEXY THAT ONE DAY!'

'Sure, wear your shapers, heels, I love them all too, that short term comfort for a long term discomfort…just please take the responsibility of what your poor lovely body will potentially experience. I ask for awareness only. Not asking for too much. Mental and physical health..health is a beauty.'

The body positivity activist has also spoken out about airbrushing, cellulite, and the effects of our perception of beauty on our mental health.

While wearing those granny panties can be a comfort thing as much as a slimming thing under that new dress, these types of statements are important to keep in mind for the sake of our self esteem.

We think we have everything together.

We shower regularly. Clean the places that need to be clean. Prep, prime, shave, wax. What more could we do?

But did you know there's a body part that nobody pays attention to? Can you guess what it is?

We're talking about the belly button, people.

Yep, according to Teen Vogue, we don't wash them near enough as we're supposed to.

Experts say that we should be gently cleaning our belly buttons (medical name, umbilicus) daily.

Professor of dermatology, Jessica J. Krant, said that cleaning it "gently with soapy water and hands only," is the only way to go.

"Your belly button should be cleaned daily in the shower just like your other skin. That is sufficient for most people.

"Depending on the shape of your belly button, you may need to gently clean with a cotton swab soaked in gentle soap or rubbing alcohol."

And if you have your belly button pierced, be extra careful because it's open to contracting even more germs and infections.

Basically guys, just wash your belly button.

One exceptionally lucky couple from County Meath are over €100,000 richer, after the pair had two separate Lottery wins in three days.

The pair, who are great-grandparents, won €10,000 on a Telly Bingo ticket, before winning a further €92,652  on Saturday’s main Lotto draw.

The couple put their amazing luck down to their son, who is deceased, as they believe he was looking down on them whn they purchased the Telly Bingo ticket on the day of his anniversary.

'We really believe he was up there looking after us,' they said at the National Lottery’s headquarters.

'It is such a coincidence that our wins came at this time.'

'On the day of Telly Bingo I had gone to my son’s grave to clean it up and say a prayer,' they told the Journal.

What are the odds?

We try to keep our skin looking super fresh all the time – but of course there's going to be days when it's not looking up to scratch.

However, if you want to make sure you're doing the best for your skin, we think it's time to throw out the shower puff.

According to new research, a shower puff is pretty dirty, and we want to throw out ours right now.

The warm, moist environment that the puff lives in means that bacteria, yeast and mould thrive

And if you think you'll get away with buying one more frequently, you're wrong. Bacteria can grow almost overnight.

The various layers of netting means that it's impossible to clean them, so you're basically just rubbing germs into your skin every time you wash.

Grossed out enough?

Well, there's more. Don't even think about putting a shower puff near you after shaving because it could cause a serious infection and ain't nobody got time for that.

Marie Claire estimate that 98 per cent of dermatologists recommend never using them, and honestly, we think we're turned off for life.

A statement was read at the opening of a criminal case brought by the Royals over the pictures of the Duchess of Cambridge taken when she was sunbathing topless in France in 2012

Prince William described the decision to publish the pictures as 'shocking'.

He said it brought back awful memories of the 'harassment' similar to how his mother Diana was treated by photographers and has demanded €1.5 million in compensation.

The Telegraph reports that the couple is also seeking a significant fine from France's Closer magazine which reproduced the photos which were taken during a holiday at a chateau in the South of France six years ago.

The case is being played out in a court in Paris where six people are on trial for alleged invasion of privacy.

Here is part of William's statement which was read out in court by the couple's solicitor Jean Veil:

"In September 2012, my wife and I thought that we could go to France for a few days in a secluded villa owned by a member of my family, and thus enjoy our privacy.

"We know France and the French and we know that they are, in principle, respectful of private life, including that of their guests. The clandestine way in which these photographs were taken was particularly shocking to us as it breached our privacy."

The Duke went on to say that the photographs “reminded us of the harassment that led to the death of my mother, Diana Princess of Wales".

The pictures were taken by a long-lens and also showed Kate having suncream rubbed into her by Prince William as well as sunbathing topless on a private terrace at the property.

A representative from Closer magazine revealed that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge has demanded €1.5 million damages from his client.

The verdict is expected on July 4th.

Mark your diaries and dust off your Repeal jumpers, because this year's March for Choice has a date.

The Abortion Rights Campaign has shared a Facebook event for the march, which is set to take place on September 30 this year.

Estimates put the number of attendees at last year's March for Choice at over 20,000.

With the success of the Strike for Repeal, which saw approximately 15,000 people take to O'Connell Bridge in Dublin for a day of peaceful strike action against the government's choice to maintain the 8th amendment, and the outcome of the recent Citizens' Assembly, this year's march is set to be bigger than ever.

We'll see you there!

Zayn Malik has encountered some major backlash from fans online this week.

Over the weekend, the Pillow Talk singer asked his fans for help raising money for life-saving cancer treatment for his mother’s best friend.

Putting the call out to his 21.8 million followers, the star tweeted a link to a GoFundMe page that had been set up in aid of the cause.

'This is my Mum’s best friend,' he said.

'Please help in any way possible.'

The page has raised £15,363 of a £120,000 goal for lung cancer treatment.

However the plea caused major backlash among his fans, who felt that the platinum-selling superstar could afford to provide his mother's best friend with the funds for the treatment.

'He could have completely paid for it, he doesn’t need our help. He’s filthy rich,' said one Twitter user.

'Sorry, but gofundme was started for poor people to get help. He's taking undue advantage of his stardom to mobilize his fan base to pay for something he can easily afford on his own,' said another. (sic)

Ayasha Butt, who the fund is in aid of, has updated the GoFundMe page in response to the haters.

'I'm so pleased that you genuine peeps are still donating and helping my cause. I've had a fabulous response to my page and posts, from both friends and strangers, but this response is tinged with sadness for me.

'I asked my "nephew" Zayn Malik to drum up some publicity for me, by way of hilightning my page and illness via Twitter. This has had an adverse effect for him as the spiteful trolls are attacking him for his kindness.' (sic)

'Never, ever would I ask him for financial help in any way, and I wouldn't want it any other way. My request was for him to enlighten the public of my sad plight and he did exactly as I asked. So come on all you trolls, give him a break please and let's just get on with the fundraising.'
