Earlier this week, actress and model, Cara Delevingne stepped out at the Met Gala sporting a fierce, silver-painted bald head.

The bold look was met with mixed reviews online, but as always, Cara had the perfect response for her critics.

In two recent Instagram posts the star explains her disgust with mainstream beauty standards.

She wrote, “The more we embrace who we are as people and rely less on our physical attributes, the more empowered we become. Beauty shouldn't be so easily defined. It is limitless.”

Another post showed a candid picture of the model which had been shared by a number of media outlets.

She wrote, “Its exhausting to be told what beauty should look like. I am tired of society defining beauty for us. Strip away the clothes, Wipe Off the make up, cut off the hair. Remove all the material possessions. Who are we? How are we defining beauty? What do we see as beautiful?”

Bald or not, Cara continues to admirably challenge society's 'ideal' beauty standards and we fully support her message.

By now, it's been drilled into us that the number on our weighing scales is not important.

And while

Body mass index (BMI) is the most commonly used measure of body fat, there's another number that we should be keeping our eyes on.

A recent study, from researchers in the UK and Australia, analysed data on body composition and mortality on more than 42,000 women and men over the course of 10 years.

Image result for bmi

They found that people with a normal BMI (between 18.5 and 25) but with a high waist-to-hip ratio (above 0.85 for women or 0.9 for men) were 22 per cent more likely to die from any and all causes.

People who were found to be obese (BMI above 30) and have a high waist-to-hip ratio also had a greater chance of dying than normal-waisted people.

But, here is the intriguing part. People who were obese, but had a normal waist-to-hip ratio did not have an increased risk of death, despite being overweight.

This could mean that we need to focus more on our waist-to-hip ratio rather than our BMI.

The study backs up previous findings that found a link between excess belly fat and mortality rate.

We may start to pay more attention to our mid-sections than anything else now.

So, it’s fair to say that Miley Cyrus has gone through a number of transformations over the years.

From sweet pop princess to rebellious trendsetter, the singer/ actress really has gone from one extreme to the other.

In a recent interview with Billboard, the 24-year-old opened up about falling back in love with her old flame, Liam Hemsworth and her recent decision to quit smoking cannabis and drinking alcohol.

Miley also revealed that her forthcoming album has been heavily influenced by her relationship and today’s political landscape.

According to Billboard, her new single Malibu, is a love song about fiancé Liam – a song she felt needed to be released as people were “going to talk” about them either way.

“They’re going to talk about me if I come out of a restaurant with Liam.’’

“So why not put the power back in my relationship and say, ‘This is how I feel’?”

The first started dating back in 2009, but their relationship broke down and the pair parted ways in 2013.

But after a few years apart Miley and Liam decided to give their engagement another go.

Miley admitted that she needed to make a number of changes in life following the split.

“Suddenly you’re like, ‘I don’t recognise you any more’.

“We had to re-fall for each other.”

Today, Miley has ditched the part-girl but admits it wasn’t an easy transition.

“I used to [resist change]. But I haven’t smoked weed in three weeks, which is the longest I’ve ever [gone without it].’’

Although Miley’s new album features a political edge, the singer says it’s about opening up the conversation rather than “getting [her] album smashed in the streets.”

“I want to talk to people in a compassionate, understanding way, which people aren’t doing,” she said.

In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, the 31-year-old revealed that she grew up with a learning disability and found it very difficult to retain information as a child.

‘’You know, everything was a bit harder for me because I grew up with a learning disability.’’

She didn’t specify what condition she suffered from, but she did say it encouraged her to create her own support system and surround herself with positive people.

‘’I don’t want to go into details but… what was wonderful is that people can be very creative in different ways.’’

On whether or not she liked being labelled an ‘It’ girl Olivia said, ‘’I’m not opposed to it. I have nothing to say other than we all evolve.’’

Since her rise to fame, Olivia has been the face of a number of high-end brands, including Max&Co and Banana Republic. She also collaborated with Ciate London on a beauty collection that launched in Dublin’s Brown Thomas in 105.

In the society we live in, we put a lot down to social media and the connections we make from it.

And as much as we think that getting ALL the 'likes' on social media is a good thing, it doesn't actually make people feel any better about themselves.

A recent study carried out at the University of South Wales found that 'likes' don't really reflect how we feel at all.

340 participants took part in the study which involved a questionnaire being sent out via Facebook and Twitter.

In the questionnaire, they were asked to record how much they agreed or disagreed with various statements.

So, for example, they were asked to agree or disagree with, 'the attention I get from social media makes me feel good' or 'I consider someone popular based on the amount of likes they get'.

The study also found that people who ask for 'likes' or buy them are seen to have low self-esteem and trust issues.

The same is true for those who delete a picture if it doesn't receive many 'likes' (but come on, we're all a little bit guilty of that).

The overall result found that 'likes' on social media doesn't actually make a person feel better about themselves or give them any added confidence.

Dr Graff , who conducted the study, said: "The proliferation of social media use has led to general concerns about the effects on our mental health.

"Although this is just a relatively small scale study the results indicate that the ways we interact with social media can affect how we feel and not always positively."

We think hanging out with mates over a bottle of vino or having some family time is so much better than 'likes' on Facebook. Do you agree?

18-year-old student, Aranya Johar from Mumbai, India, gave an extremely powerful speech about everyday sexism.

She performed her spoken word poem ‘A Brown Girl’s Guide to Gender’ at an UnErase Poetry event in March for Women’s Day, and a video of her performance has since been shared over 100,000 times.

Aranya begins by telling the story of the first boy who held her hand.

‘’The first boy who held my hand, told me boys don’t want to hear about vaginas bleeding.’’

She then continues to talk about the restrictions Indian women are subject to so the don’t become ‘’another of India’s daughters.’’

‘’My mom telling me to wear skirts less often. So I wear my jeans and wear my long tops.’’

‘’Don’t show cleavage or a hint of my thighs. Don’t want to be mistaken for wanting it.’’

Speaking to Buzzfeed News, Aranya said this was the first time she had ever performed the poem and admitted it she had written it less than a week before the event.

The idea for the poem came about after she and her friends shared their experiences of assault and harassment with each other.

According to Buzzfeed News, she was also inspired to write the poem after the Nirbhaya rape case and the story of Laxmi, an acid attack victim.

"They were both so unfortunate and yet so real, it could happen to anyone," Aranya said.

The 18-year-old often posts her poetry to Instagram and Facebook, and also runs a performing arts start up.

The Irish Cancer Society are calling for additional efforts and investment to improve the uptake of the HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccination programme, after some controversial reports caused the amount of people choosing to get vaccinated to fall rapidly.

According to the society, the latest report from the National Cancer Registry, highlights an “urgent need for increased investment to prevent unnecessary deaths.”

Over 400 people are diagnosed with cancers caused by HPV in Ireland each year, and sadly, the disease claims up to 130 lives annually.

Donald Buggy, head of services and advocacy at The Irish Cancer Society is also calling for the programme to be opened to boys.

‘’85 men in Ireland annually develop a cancer which could potentially be prevented by a simple and safe vaccination.’’

“While boys can avail of the HPV vaccine through their GP, for a fee, The Irish Cancer Society believes it is time for the government to invest in the extension of the national HPV school vaccination programme to boys, so that as many lives as possible can be saved,” he said.

There have been a significant decline in the uptake of the vaccination among secondary school girls over the past two years with figures dropping from 87 per cent to as low as 50 per cent in some areas.

Donald added, ''If this worrying trend is not reversed, women will continue to die needlessly from HPV-caused cancers.''

Minister for Health, Simon Harris, recently hit out at anti-vaccine campaigners, who he believes are putting lives at risk due to the spread of misinformation.

The Minister admitted he was deeply concerned about the decline in the uptake of the potentially life-saving vaccine.

He said, ‘’There is no scientific evidence that the HPV vaccine causes any long-term illness. However, this misinformation has led to a significant drop in uptake rates of the HPV vaccine.’’

‘’This means that a large cohort of girls are now at risk of developing cervical cancer later in their lives.’’

The fresh calls for increased investment in the programme come after the Teachers’ Union of Ireland passed a motion asking for a review of the HPV vaccine programme is schools.
