Dublin residents are being fined for having as little as a teabag in their recycling bin.

According to 98fm, Greyhound waste company has already issued fines of €30 to people who put teabags in their bin, while others have been fined for a couple of biscuits.

However, residents are concerned that when they leave their bins out on the road to be collected, children going by on the street will throw something in them.

Nicola McHugh from Ballyfermot said that she received a fine for having biscuits in her green bin, but doesn't feel like she has to pay it as "kids are using the bins constantly."

Meanwhile, TD Bríd Smith from People Before Profits says that this is an example of companies acting like cartels.

She feels as if there should be a bit of leeway "for a certain level of contamination."

Greyhound waste has since responded to the claims, saying nobody is fined for having only one teabag in their green bin.

The company said: "Only bins that are consistently heavy over a long period are selected for monitoring.

"The householder is then informed in writing that their green bin is being monitored and are provided with ample time to change the way they segregate their waste.

"When their bins are checked and are found to be contaminated, pictures are taken and a surcharge is issued. The householder is then given 14 days to appeal."

With a statue dedicated to the late great Joe Dolan in Mullingar town centre, it wasn't going to be long before the residents of the Westmeath town started making noise about honouring Niall Horan in a similar fashion.

According to The Irish Independent, Mullingar locals are calling for a street to be named after the former One Direction star.

Focussing their attention on Meeting House Lane – a pedestrian alleyway between Oliver Plunkett Street and Blackhall Street – locals have requested the area undergo a name change, and it sounds like local authorities may be on board.

"If we were to name a street after him, it couldn’t happen to a better man," said Councillor Willie Penrose.

"Niall is associated with a lot of people in Mullingar. No matter where you go in the world you should never forget where you come from."

Acknowledging the Slow Hands singer's pride in his native town, Willie continued: "Niall is a very level headed young lad. He has never lost touch with his roots or the people from here."

We're saying it right now; we're here for it.

Looks like Jess Glynne is the latest singer to receive the Ed Sheeran treatment and we cannot wait to hear what these two have in store.

Not content with dominating the charts by himself, Ed has helped many artists climb their way to the top with his versatile song-writing skills, and now it's fellow flame-haired singer, Jess Glynne's turn to get in on the action.

The Shape of You singer is helping to re-launch Jess's career by co-writing two songs, titled Thursday and Woman Like Me.

According to The Sun, the tracks are set to be “major components” to Jess's new album.

A source told the paper:  “After the success Jess enjoyed with her first album, she has been able to pick and choose who she works with but was delighted that Ed came on board."

“His offerings are set to be major components of Jess’s album — his songwriting and her distinctive sound are a perfect fit.”

2017 has been a busy year for Ed. Having already penned songs for Rita Ora, Liam Payne and Zara Larsson, you'd wonder where the singer finds the time to work on his own career?

Not that he needs to.

Last weekend Ed sold over 300,000 tickets for his 2018 Irish tour and has since announced two extra dates.

Tickets for Páirc Uí Chaoimh, May 6 and Phoenix Park, May 19, go on sale this Saturday at 9:00am through usual outlets.

The Taoiseach of Ireland, Leo Varadkar, is the new cover man of Time Magazine.

The European edition of the magazine, which will be published in full on July 24, will see Leo grace the front cover, while inside, he talks about his new position as Taoiseach of our country.

The author of interview, Jennifer Duggan, writes: "Varadkar takes up the post of Taoiseach at a time when the Republic of Ireland has emerged from a deep financial crisis and its economy is turning around.

"But he knows that, especially given external threats such as the neighbouring UK's withdrawal from the European Union, continued progress is not guaranteed.

"He brings a straight-talking style to the office."

The interview took place at the beginning of the month, July 7, and he frankly talks about his sexuality, Brexit and Ireland, and Donald Trump.

This will be an interesting read.

At the Gucci cruise show last summer, we looked on in awe as celebrities and fashion's elite took a seat in an embellished boat, full of gold satin cushions and intricate tasselled table designs.

Instead of zoning in on the Scandi trends of minimalism, Gucci took it to another level completely, with overstated and flamboyant candles, chairs, plates, wallpaper, mugs and motifs.

In fact, one embroidered cushion took approximately ten hours to complete.

Well, from September, you will be able to buy the ornamented homewares collection… but it doesn't come cheap.

Prices start off at $190 (€170) for a scented candle, and go all the way up to $30,000 (€27,000) for a silk screen.

But everything is just so, so gorgeous:

OK, we'll be honest, our hearts still flutter at the mere mention of Gerard Way, and if you ever went through an emo phase as a teenager, you'll know exactly what we're talking about.

Ever since the band parted ways in 2013, the My Chemical Romance frontman has focussed more on his second love in life – comic books.

The Umbrella Academy, a comic book series he co-created with illustrator, Gabriel Ba, tells the story of a dysfunctional family of superheroes who adopted by a mysterious millionaire.

The comic was set for the silver screen back in 2009, but now Netflix have confirmed that they will adapt the comic for a 10-part live-action series, due to hit screens some time in 2018.

In a statement of his official wedsite, Gerard wrote: “It’s really happening!”

“Gabriel and I can’t wait to dive in and help make this a very memorable series with the team that is forming right now!”

He later added: “I am thrilled that The Umbrella Academy has found a home at Netflix. I couldn’t think of a better place for the vision Gabriel Ba and myself had when creating the comic, and cannot wait for people to experience that world as a live action show.”

The show is still in the pre-production stages, but according to Geek.com, Gerard looks set for the role of co-executive producer.

And as for the script, the pilot episode was adapted and written by Jeremy Slater, who created last year’s Exorcist TV series, so naturally, we're expecting good things.

Noughties kids keep your eyes peeled!

The relationship you have with your siblings are unlike any other.

When you were kids, you fought, hit, shouted and screamed at them all day long, and if you told your parents about their naughty behaviour? 'They didn't mean it, they're only young', are the words you'd hear them say.

And let's not get started on little brothers… they did just about anything to wind you up back in the day.

Well, older siblings, prepare to feel very smug because science has just found out something that you have known all along.

Little brothers are born naughty.

Yep, scientists studied datasets from Florida, all the way to Denmark and found that little brothers just can't help themselves from being bold.

In the report, named Birth Order and Delinquency (what a name), the researchers said: “In families with two or more children, second-born boys are on the order of 20 to 40 per cent more likely to be disciplined in school and enter the criminal justice system compared to first-born boys even when we compare siblings.”

Ouch!

It's not all bad though, as it has been found that younger siblings are also more laid back and funny.

“The most significant difference is in feeling the burden of responsibility – most (54 per cent) firstborns say they are more responsible than their siblings, compared to 31 per cent of last-borns.

“Younger siblings, on the other hand, are more likely to say they are more funny (46 per cent compared to 36 per cent of elder siblings), more easy going and more relaxed.”

The study ended by explaining that because older siblings were usually told to "keep an eye" on their younger brothers or sisters, "elder siblings are more likely to feel more organised and able to prioritise their own lives. Likewise, younger siblings are more likely to feel more favoured by their parents.”

So, there you have it.

A very high number of women have started to freeze their eggs as they are unable to find an equally intelligent partner.

In a study by researchers at Yale University, it found that fewer men are entering higher education, and therefore, educated women are finding it difficult to find their perfect partner.

According to The Independent, there is an "over-supply" of highly educated females, and the intelligence gap between men and women is becoming wider.

The study examined 150 women in the US and Israel, who have had their eggs frozen throughout eight clinics.

90 per cent of them said that they were "preserving" their eggs because they have not found a partner yet.

81 per cent of the women said they have a college degree.

Author of the study, Professor of Anthropology Marcia Ihorn, said: "There is a major gap – they are literally missing men.

apple, businesswoman, communication

"There are not enough college graduates for them. In simple terms, this is about an over-supply of educated women."

To further that, a fertility doctor who took part in the study explained: "[Straight] women tell us frequently that they are freezing their eggs because the men they meet feel threatened by their success and so are unwilling to commit to starting a family together."

Maha Al-Adheem, who is accused of murdering her three-year-old son earlier this week, appeared in court this morning to face charges.

Omar Omran was murdered in what is believed to have been a frenzied attack in an apartment in the Riverside complex in Poddle Park on Monday afternoon.

According to 98FM, the accused, who was arrested yesterday, addressed the court, saying: "Yes, it was my knife. Yes, it was my hand. It was not me. It was the power."

The accused, a qualified doctor, was transferred to St James Hospital with stab wounds on Monday evening after authorities were called to the scene of the murder in an apartment complex in Kimmage, south Dublin.

Omar was pronounced dead at the scene.

Better dig out the Mr Sheen, because according to a new study, household dust could encourage weight gain.

Researchers from the American Chemical Society have discovered that compounds called endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) found in dust can spur fat cells to accumulate more fat.

The study found that house dust caused the fat cells to accumulate an additional type of fat called triglycerides when it was introduced to the petri dish.

EDCs are synthetic or naturally occurring compounds that can that act as a replica for the body's hormones.

They are commonly found in consumer goods and thus ends up in household dust which is then inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the skin (what?).

In order to conduct the research, scientists tested samples of dust from 11 different homes in North California.

The results showed 7 of the 11 samples had triggered the fat cells to develop and accumulate triglyerides while only one sample had no effect on the cells at all.

Furthermore,  just three micrograms of dust was shown to have an adverse affect on cells – far less than the estimated 50 milligrams consumed by children each day.

Researchers concluded the study by suggesting that exposure to the chemicals through house dust may disrupt metabolic health, particularly in children.

Excuse us while we hoover for several days.
