Yearly Archives: 2016

If there is one truth that we know today to be true – it's that supermarkets are going to be JAMMERS over the next 48 hours. Indeed, today, Friday December 23, is anticipated to be the busiest shopping day of the year.

Because it just wouldn't be Christmas without a serious last minute panic around the grocery aisles.

And now the nation's Top Ten last-minute purchases have been revealed – as sold in Tesco Ireland stores nationwide on Christmas Eve in 2015.

Unsurprisingly, the likes of milk, cream and fresh bread are all high-priority for Irish shoppers:

1.       Fresh milk

2.       Fresh cream

3.       White bread

4.       Cola soft drinks

5.       Fruit flavour soft drinks

6.       Bacon

7.       Crisps in a tube

8.       Lemons and limes

9.       Big bag crisps and snacks

10.     Brussels sprouts

Bacon makes its roaring debut in at No.6 having not featured at all in 2014. And the appearance of Brussels sprouts at No.10 is a smidgen controversial given the vegetable's rather mixed reputation. Still, Tesco expects to sell more than 2million sprouts TODAY ALONE – adding to the 6.5million sold in the last week.

The spirit of the season is well and truly alive today, with the revelation that Irish comedian and actor Brendan O'Carroll has donated Christmas dinner to thousands of families in need.

The Irish Mirror reports that the Mrs Brown's Boys star has donated 2,700 Christmas dinners to Irish families who would otherwise have gone without.

The donation was made to Saint Vincent de Paul, who in turn will distribute vouchers for turkey and ham to families across Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow.

The cause is particularly close to the 61-year-old's heart, as Saint Vincent de Paul played an important role in O'Carroll's own childhood.

He told the Irish Mirror: “When I was a lot younger, if it hadn't been for Saint Vincent de Paul, I wouldn't have had a Christmas.”

Given that the charity will have received over 65,000 appeals for help by the time 2016 is over, this act of generosity will no doubt make a huge difference to affected families.

Well done, Brendan.

Anis Amri, the Tunisian asylum seeker suspected of carrying out the Berlin Christmas market terrorist attack earlier this week has been shot dead in Milan.

The 24-year-old hi-jacked a lorry, killing the driver, and drove it through a busy market at high speed, killing 12 people and injuring 48 others.

Marco Minniti, Italy's interior minister told a press conference that Amri had been shot dead by police after firing at them when they stopped his car for a routine identity check around 3:00am this morning.

“He immediately took a pistol out of his rucksack and shot at the police who asked him for documents."

"The person killed after a number of inquiries without any shadow of a doubt is Anis Amri, the presumed suspect of the terrorist attack in Berlin," he said.

A police source said that Amri was then identified by fingerprints.

Amri had been missing and on the run since escaping after Monday's attack in central Berlin.

We suppose this is a little early Christmas present for Honey G fans.

Yep, the X Factor rapper has just released her debut single, The Honey G Show, just in time for Christmas.

In the video, the aspiring star references herself to big-time performers such as Kanye West and Snoop Dogg, and then even compares herself to Muhammad Ali.

Oh, and of course the track includes THAT call and response chorus (that we all love so much).

Even though Honey didn't win the X Factor this year, she's still hoping to bag a number one with this song.

Just when you thought you'd seen the back of 2016's crazy hair trends, from unicorn hair to glitter roots, a Christmas miracle occurs.

Christmas tree hair styles are sprouting up all over Instagram, and the tinsel touting feats of engineering are more than impressive.

If you're seriously committed to showing your Christmas spirit, this hair challenge could be for you.

The ridiculous trend requires a 'go hard or go home' mentality, and the more baubles, lights and tinsel applied, the better.

The look requires engineering your long hair into an upwards cone shape, presumably with liberal amounts of gel and hairspray, before spraying it green and applying your choice of embellishments.

If you're not willing to sacrifice some baubles from your real tree, a few sparkly earrings should do the trick, along with a star hair clip as the pièce de résistance.

We think that Cindy Lou Who from Whoville would be seriously envious of this one.

We love Christmas, but donning a festive fleecy jumper and maybe a reindeer antler hair band is as far as were willing to go.

Bella Hadid is reaping the benefits of her top notch modelling career, after storming the catwalk at the Victoria's Secret fashion show and being named the third most popular model of the year, just behind big sister Gigi and best friend Kendall.

However, the model has faced some criticism for her seriously slim figure, and the 20-year-old is now getting skinny shamed on a new Instagram photo.

Thousands of commentators have flocked to the photo to bash the model's body.

The star is being accused of "glamorising anorexia" in a black and white photo, in which her thin thighs and prominent ribs are clearly visible.

"Your ribs. Eat. Dangerous role model for young girls looking at you as an idol," said one.

"Is she anorexic? Stop glamorising eating disorders!" said another.

However, other fans are rushing to the models defence and blaming her weight loss on her struggle with Lyme disease.

"There is no need to be disrespectful. In the case you didn't know ( however unlikely that may be) she has Lyme disease so her weight fluctuates. Your comments are not only disrespectful to her and others suffering from Lyme disease but to people suffering from anorexia as well," said one.

Lyme disease does cause both weight loss and weight gain in sufferers as it effects the metabolism, so it is very possible that Bella's slim figure is a result of her illness, rather than an eating disorder.

Have you ever wondered what Santa Claus actually looks like? You're definitely not the only one.

And without all of the movie and Coca Cola depictions of Saint Nic, how on earth would we even know?

Well luckily, John Moores University’s Face Lab in Liverpool has done some extensive research in order to construct an accurate representation of what Santa really looks like, based on scientific and historical information on his origins.

Image from the St. Nicholas Center, www.stnicholascenter.org

Based on the fact that Santa Claus is a depiction of Saint Nicholas of Maya, a bishop renowned for his great generosity, the Face Lab has recreted the saint's features to see what the mince pie loving mythical man would look like.

The recreation was also based on x-rays and photographs taken of the skeletal remains of the saint in 1957, which are said to be buried in southern Italy.

"This is the most realistic appearance of St Nicholas based on all the skeletal and historical material. It is thrilling for us to be able to see the face of this famous 4th century bishop," Professor Caroline Wilkinson of the Face Lab wrote on their website.

A few distinctive features include a broken nose which healed asymmetrically, and a height of 5'4, which was average back in the 4th century.

All the better for stooping as he climbs out of fireplaces, we would think.

You may remember Valerie Fairman from season two of 16 And Pregnant, one of MTV's most popular noughties shows.

The mother-of-one was reportedly found dead in a friend's home last night, according to TMZ.

The local coroner is said to be conducting toxicology tests to discover the cause of death but it is thought that the death was caused by an overdose.

While visiting her friend, it is reported that Valerie locked herself in the bathroom.

Upon knocking on the door and receiving no response, the friend forcibly entered the bathroom, discovering the teen mum.

Valerie leaves behind seven-year-old Nevaeh – Heaven spelled backwards – who she described as her "heaven on earth."

MTV, who are responsible for propelling the young mum into the spotlight, said: "We are saddened by the news of Valerie Fairman's passing."

"Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time."

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are currently in the midst of some pretty bitter divorce proceedings.

The latest development in the proceedings sees Brad slate Angelina for over sharing about the arrangements they have for co-parenting their children.

The Oscar winning actor has accused his soon to be ex wife of releasing sensitive details about their custody agreement to the media.

A photo posted by @ilako_ on

According to court documents acquired by People, Angelina "appears to be determined to ignore even agreed upon standards relating to the children’s best interest.”

Brad claims she “exposed the children by making public the names of their therapists and other mental health professionals.”

Brad has previously requested that court documents about their divorce be sealed and privatised, but his request was rejected.

The couple have six children together, and the publication of documents regarding their custody arrangements could compromise the kids privacy, according to Brad.

The pair reached a temporary custody agreement this month, with Angelina retaining custody and Brad having visitation rights.

Vin Diesel has a new movie coming out, XXX: The Return of Xander Cage, and like many other actors, started a bit of a press tour to get people buzzed about the flick.

However, at Brazil's Comic-Con Experience 2016, where Vin did his first interview, things just went from bad to awful.

The Fast & Furious star was being interviewed by Youtuber Carol Moreira, and it got very uncomfortable, very quickly.

It all starts off normal, but then in the middle of a question, where Carol asks about working with Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan, Vin decided to say this:

"God, you're so beautiful. My god, she's so beautiful, man. Am I right or wrong? Look at her. How am I supposed to do this interview? Look at this woman. She's so beautiful. Talk to me, baby!"

Yep, weird. But, it got worse.

When Carol went on to ask, "what is your story?" Mr Diesel retorted: "What's your story?

"Let's get outta here. Let's go, let's go have lunch. My god, I love her. Look how beautiful she is. God, wow, man."

Let's get outta here… seriously?!

And it went on, when Carol asked the star about his love for nerdy stuff like her, he said: "I'm anything like you because I love you."

Then, Vin pulled his entourage off camera to tell them: "Look how beautiful she is. You guys think this is a joke. How am I supposed to sit over here looking at such beauty? C'mon guys. She's so beautiful. I'm in love. I'm in love with the interviewer."

And how is Carol acting throughout this? She just smiles and tries to move onto the next question.

But, Vin doesn't give up so easily. Just as the interview is coming to an end, he stops ANOTHER time to say: "I love her. Man, she's so f*cking sexy.

"I can't do this interview. Look at her. Does anyone see this? Guys, what's wrong? Am I the only one saying this? Look at her. She's so f*cking beautiful. It's like you can't even do an interview with her."

And if ALL that wasn't bad enough, he then gets down on his knees and crawls over to Carol.

"Oh my god, someone save me. When did this turn into [a] beautiful world? When did this turn into the most beautiful girl in Brazil? When did this turn into I love you?"

Yep. WTF.

The Youtuber uploaded the video on her channel yesterday, which she introduces in her native language, Portuguese, saying:

"I was not sure what to do. I just laughed because it was a very delicate situation. I did not like it. At the time I did not know how to react, but you will see that I was uncomfortable, it was not legal and that he interrupted my work…"

There's nothing wrong with paying a compliment, but seriously? No grown man should act like that.
