Yearly Archives: 2016

Destined to become another addition to the long lost and forgotten hopefuls of the X Factor, Ben Haenow has been dropped from Syco following disappointing debut album sales.

With his album only released in November last, the 31-year-old took to Twitter to graciously announce the news.

"Working with The X Factor and Syco has been the most amazing time of my life and has given me the best possible platform for the start of my career.

"However, after discussions with the Syco team we both felt it was the right time to move on."

In other words, they told him to GTFO.

Don't worry Ben, you are not the first and will not be the last to be forgotten by the official reality show of musical doom.

1) Eoghan Quigg

What can we say about the fresh-faced little Eoghan who once melted our hearts with one puppy dog glance.

Well, after releasing the "worst album in the history of recorded sound" according to the Guardian, Eoghan has since been seen getting his kit off for various celebrity gossip magazines.

He did however go up for Ireland's Eurosong contest in 2014! Alas, he didn't win that either.

2) Diana Vickers

Thankfully, Eoghan's love interest from that particularly memorable year, has fared better.

You may not have heard much from Diana music-wise since her debut album Songs from the Tainted Cherry Tree.

While she did release a second album in 2013,  the formerly frizzy-haired songstress went on to do well in other ventures including starring in numerous West End shoes and producing her own fashion line.

3) James Arthur

Everything looked good for James when he won the X Factor. With his voice of gold and his single Impossible remaining the fastest selling winner's single to date.

What could possibly go wrong? Well, James' big mouth it would seem.

James became embroiled in a homophobic Twitter scandal and after releasing his debut album around that time, he quicklyparted ways with Syco.

Don't worry though! The musician has since been signed to Columbia Records and we shall be seeing a second album from him at some point this year.

4) Aiden Grimshaw

If you miss Aiden's brooding good looks as much as we do, then you will be glad to hear he has not completely disappeared off the face of the earth.

While having not heard much since his X Factor follow-up album, the 24-year-old went out and produced his own self-titled EP in 2013.

After a year long break from music, Aiden released two singles last year AND is reportedly working with Zayn on his upcoming solo album. Get you, Aiden!

5) Steve Brookstein

Remember the winner of the very first season of X Factor ever?

Well, poor Steve was swiftly dropped from Syco following a disappointing sales for his debut album. He has since been engaged in a very bitter public feud with Simon.

Steve released an album tragically titled Forgotten Man in 2014.

6) Matt Cardle

Another talented vocalist won in 2011 but you have probably since forgotten about him. After a successful winners single, Matt's second single didn't fare as well and… you've guessed it! Syco gave him the axe.

While the star has released two other albums since, the 32-year-old has gone on to find success in the West End and is currently starring in musical drama Memphis.

Oh and he has a new album coming out this year. What a busy bee!

7) Katie Waissel

Katie was bonkers on the X Factor, so we can only hazard a guess as to watch she could be up to know.

It turns out that she does not seem to have been up to much since but she did release an album in 2011 and is currently reinventing herself as part of a new band called Red Velvet.

They're working on a debut album.

8) Rebecca Ferguson

Rebecca may not be out in the charts or in the papers, but that doesn't mean she hasn't been working.

Rebecca has carved a career for herself away from pop music having released two critically acclaimed albums since competing in the show.

She also released a covers album last year.

9) Chico

It's Chico time!

Well, no we reckon it was never really Chico time.

Apparently, Chico has done everything from hosting online gaming sessions for a company called Bingocams UK to producing songs for England in the 2010 World Cup

As for today, we have no idea what this firecracker is up to nowadays but he does have a wife and daughter so we reckon he has his hands full.

10) Janet Devlin

Janet was booted out of the X Factor for being just that bit too unique for Syco's interests.

The Northern-Irish songstress did however land her own record deal and has since released two albums.

She still gigs around the world.

11) One Direction

Never amounted to much sadly.

They may play each other's mortal enemies on the actual show, but thankfully co-stars Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan get on like a house on fire in real life.

Gillian shared this sweet selfie of the pair from yesterday as they wrapped the very last season of the Fall.

Yep, the seminal crime drama is to return to RTE for the third and final series later this year.

"Jamie Dornan, sweetest man alive, just wrapped season 3 of The Fall," read Gillian's cute caption.

"You'll never meet a nicer serial killer."

Jamie plays Paul Spector, a Northern Irish serial killer while Gillian plays a seductive yet troubled detective pursuing him in the hit drama series set in Belfast.

But don't worry, we will be seeing much more from these two in the near future.

Gillian has reprised the role of Dana Scully in the hotly anticipated reboot of the X-Files which returned to our screens this week.

Meanwhile, Jamie is currently starring as Christian Grey in the steamy 50 Shades of Grey franchise. The next installment is due out in early 2017.

There's poor driving and poorly sign-posted junctions…. and then there is this.

An Irish man has captured footage of a notoriously confusing junction located at Rosslare Harbour in County Wexford which regular ferry-goers will no doubt be familiar with.

Michael Fortune captured a video of drivers trying and generally failing to navigate their way into the correct lane at the junction which apparently remains just as poorly sign-posted today as it did in this video filmed in 2007.

"For those who haven't seen it before, [this is] a form of local folklore which I filmed in Rosslare Harbour in Co. Wexford in 2007," reads the video description.

"The short film captures the entrance to Rosslare port and how cars, vans, bikes etc swerve, dodge and dance at a badly signed junction.

"Apparently this had being going on for years. One man told me, that he'd go down most evenings during the summer, to observe the craic with the cars as they rushed to get onto the ferry.

And paired with the comical soundtrack, this vid is nothing short of farce.

Watch the bonkers footage below (and keep an eye out for the guy stopping to have a quick wee):

Rosslare Harbour, Co. WexfordI've been asked by a good few Wexford people to embed this on Facebook. For those who haven't seen it before, its a form of local folklore which I filmed in Rosslare Harbour in Co. Wexford in 2007 . One man told me, that he'd go down most evenings during the summer, to observe the craic with the cars as they rushed to get onto the ferry.Aside from the cars going arseways, the man stopping to have a wee before he hit the queue for the ferry is 100% real. I spent 3 hours recording this and once I stuck Valerio's soundtrack underneath it that evening, I knew it was a winner. The man who brought my attention to this, Mike Kavanagh, passed away last year.

The series may be well and truly over, but for these two Downton Abbey stars the romance continues.

Laura Carmichael, who plays Lady Edith, has reportedly found love with co-star Michael Fox who plays an illiterate footman named Andrew Parker in the popular ITV drama.

It's a romance that would have caused endless controversy in the fictional universe of Downtown Abbey (a Lady and a footman?!), but in real life, it may just be a perfect match.

"Laura and Michael struck up a great friendship during filming last year," a source has told the Sun.

"They started off as mates but quickly realised there was chemistry there and decided to start dating.

"It's very early days still but they are really enjoying each other's company.

"The best part is that since the show ended they have had a lot more time to spend with each other."

Well at least something good has come out of the end of the series because most of us are still blubbering into our hankies.

Laura has been a veteran of the show, having been involved with the production since the very first series. Meanwhile Michael joined the cast as the footman in the penultimate series.

Well grab your finest coat Andrew Parker because you've pulled.

News just in, chocolate lovers – Dublin will soon be home to Ireland's first Creme Egg Café.

After spending roughly 95% of our working week drooling over snaps of the newly opened outlet in London, we were delighted to get word from Cadbury today that the chocolatey goodness would be spreading to Dublin too.

"Cadbury is eggstremely eggcited to announce that the Crème de la Creme Egg Cafe is coming to Dublin," the chocolate giant said in a statement today.

"Opening on Tuesday 16th February, the Café nestled within Lock 6 on Canal Road, Dublin 6, will be a gooey haven for all Creme Egg lovers."

GAH. That means we can soon look forward to delights like this on home shores…

Oh, and this…

And even this…

But of course the real question is, will Dublin's version of the café have a ball pit in the basement too?

Banksy's style of artwork is well-known and often-copied at this stage, but a new piece on Dublin's Moore St has gotten people very excited indeed today.

The artwork, which appeared on wooden hoarding overnight, is a nod to the 1916 Rising and the current dispute over the redevelopment of the Moore St area.

It shows Padraig Pearse "surrendering" two to developers dressed in high-vis jackets, and is signed with a distinctive Banksy signature.

Needless to say, people have been getting very excited over on Twitter:

However, according to Dublin street art king Will St Leger, the new piece is "99.9% likely" to be a fake.

Speaking to RTÉ, Will cited the piece's "amateur style and theme" along with the fact that Banksy no longer signs his work in that way, as two signs it's almost certainly a dupe.

Oh well. Maybe one day…

The Amber Rose-Wiz Khalifa-Kanye-Kim-Blac Chyna-Tyga-Kylie feud reared its ugly head again yesterday, and Kanye's just refusing to let things lie.

After blasting his ex's ex Wiz Khalifa in a series of tweets earlier this week, Kanye turned his attention to Amber Rose herself.

Turns out, the easiest way to wind up Yeezy is to make inaccurate claims about his sex life:

After reading Amber's tweet about having her 'play around' in his nether regions, Kanye took to Twitter last night to hit back.

And after seeing his tweets, we wish he'd just taken the high road and said nothing at all.

"Exes can be mad but just know I never let them play with my ass… I don’t do that… I stay away from that area all together," he wrote.

"I’m not into that kind of sh*t… I like pictures and videos Me and my wife got the kind of love that can turn exes into best friends."

Whatever you say, 'Ye. We cannot WAIT to see Amber's response.

Zayn Malik is finally casting off the shackles of One Direction with his first solo single, Pillowtalk.

The song and video dropped in the early hours of this morning, and we have to admit we're liking his work so far.

Pillowtalk is just slightly NSFW, featuring Zayn, Gigi Hadid… and a few lotus-flower vaginas. A few things we noticed:

Zayn and Gigi are most DEFINITELY on
Despite claiming in an interview with Zane Lowe yesterday that he and Ms Hadid are just 'friends,' Zayn can't keep his hands off her in this video.

It's a huge change from One Direction's videos
Lots of abstract colour, lotus flowers and paint pouring down people's faces. It's no Steal My Girl.

Zayn's still an awkward 23-year-old at the end of it all
Any shots of him on his own, staring moodily in the camera, automatically made us cringe. Sorry, Zayn.

While many of us may have worshipped at the alter of Barbie growing up, as we got a bit older we started to realise that she looked NOTHING like any of us.

In fact, she looked like no one alive because her body was completely unrealistic.

And while poor Barbs has gone through a mammoth amount of criticism over the years, Mattel's latest release is sure to win the blonde bombshell back some brownie points.

Yesterday, the colossal toy manufacturer announced a new range of Barbie that will come in all shapes and sizes.

Yep, not only will Barbie represent different ethnicities but she will also come in curvy, petite and tall versions that better reflect real life bodies.

HURRAH.

The move is so historic, that Barbie and her new vivacious figure has graced the cover of TIME magazine and has got chins wagging all over the world.

This probably does not make up for decades of perpetuating unrealistic body standards to little girls across the globe, but hey it is a definite move in the right direction.

A 28-year-old man has been caught smuggling deadly weapons into popular themepark Disneyland Paris earlier today.

A compulsory X-Ray of the man's luggage revealed the guns to security who then arrested the suspect on the spot.

Other articles found in the man's possession was a Koran leading to speculation that the weapons were to be used as part of a terrorist attacked but this has not been confirmed by Parisian police officials.

A woman, who was accompanying the man in question, has also been arrested.

According to the Telegraph, the pair had reportedly booked a room in the Hotel New York, which is the main and most expensive accommodation in the highly popular resort.

The hotel is located at the entrance to the park, only a few metres from busy dining and shopping areas.

The man is reportedly not already known to French intelligence.

While any public display of coupley affection on social media is seriously vomit-inducing, this homemade video charting Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard's recent escapades in Africa is kind of hilarious.

The clip, which is set to Toto's Africa, includes footage from the trip as well as the pair acting a bit ridiculous.

This was our last trip before having kids," reads the description.

"Our sole objective was to rage hard and honour Toto properly. Hope you enjoy."

The lip-syncing scenes are definitely a bit gas but we can't decide if the whole thing is still a bit cringe.

Watch the video below and judge for yourselves:
