Monthly Archives: March 2016

St Patrick's Day is something of a global holiday at this stage, and while here in Ireland we're content with a few pints of the black stuff on March 17, other countries feel the need to go all out.

Here are just a few of the Paddy's Day "traditions" that we (thankfully) steer away from on the Emerald Isle.

1. Using Guinness as an ingredient (in anything other than stew)
Guinness in a pint glass – yes. Guinness in stew – yes. Guinness in brownies, cheesecake or cupcakes – no,  no and NO.

2. Dyeing beer green
Are you enjoying that neon green lager? REALLY though, are you?

3. Dyeing rivers green
We're looking at you, Chicago.

4. Dyeing anything green, in fact.
A green loaf of soda bread does not a Paddy's Day lunch make.

5. Greeting people with obscure phrases as Gaeilge
"Go n-éirí an bóthar leat, a Shéamus!"

6. Playing It's A Long Long Way To Tipperary at full blast
Thousands of incredible great songs have come out of Ireland, sadly that's not one of them.

7. Affectionately referring to March 17 as "St Patty's Day"
#paddysnotpattys

8. Saying "Top of the mornin' to ya!," even in jest
"Top of the mornin' to ya, random Irish person! Can you tell us the way to the Guinness Storehouse?"

paris hilton gross ew disgusted grossed out

9. Having t-shirts made bearing your family name
No true Irish person would be seen dead in a t-shirt proclaiming they were one of "The Killarney O'Shaughnessys," and that's just a fact.

Tributes are pouring in this morning for legendary magician Paul Daniels, who has sadly passed away after a short battle with cancer.

Paul, 76, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour last month after collapsing at his home and suffering a suspected stroke.

A statement from his publicist confirmed the sad news this morning.

"One of our most beloved entertainers, Paul Daniels, has passed away at the age of 77.

"The TV star, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour earlier this year, passed away peacefully at home with Debbie at his side in the early hours of this morning.

"Debbie and the family would like to thank everyone for their support and asks that their privacy be respected at this sad time."

Paul's adult son Gary paid tribute to his father this morning with a gorgeous image of a white rabbit in a top hat:

"It is with incredible sadness that I can confirm that Dad, Paul Daniels, passed away over night," he wrote.

Speaking to The Mirror last month, his son Martin admitted that the family knew from the time of diagnosis that nothing could be done.

"Dad's not going to get any better. There's no treatment which can help him. Doctor's haven't said how many weeks or months he might have – and we haven't asked.

"He knows things are not in his hands now and we are living in the knowledge every day is a bonus."

Paul, a native of Middlesbrough, England, received numerous awards over the course of his long and successful career in magic,

He is survivied by his wife of 28 years, Debbie McGee, and his three adult sons from a previous marriage to Jacqueline Skipworth.

Ah, Paddy's Day. The most Irish day of them all. And where would we be in Ireland without all the craic?

Sure, most of the fun of Paddy's Day is meeting up with your friends and going for a few drinks.

But if you don't want to face the herds in town, stay at home and have some fun with these Guinness jelly shots.

The combo of Bailey's, Guinness, coffee and chocolate kinda makes these shots seem too good to be true – but sure, we'll give everything a go.

Here's the recipe if you fancy it. Now go and be merry. Happy St. Patrick's Day!

He filled our feeds for years with many pictures of his happy little face popping up in gifs and memes – and now the 'Success Kid' is back and all grown up.

The photo of the now eight-year-old was posted on Imgur, and my, he has grown.

His mother is standing with him in the photo holding up a little 'Success Kid' toy while Sammy grins beside her.

Last year he surfaced on the Internet again when his family lauched a GoFundMe campaign for his dad to receive a kidney transplant.

The operation was successful (yay) and we hope to see Sammy strike a few more hilarious poses in the future.

We watched it religiously from 2007 to 2010 and now we might be able to get a little more Gavin and Stacey (and Smithy and Nessa) in our lives.

James Cordon revealed today that he would “love” to reprise the role of Smithy on the show one last time.

The Late Late Show presenter returned as Gavin’s bashy BFF for a Sport Relief sketch recently and said he’d like to write another special with Ruth Jones, who played Nessa.

“I’d love to do another Gavin & Stacey special. It’s just finding the time. My favourite was the last Christmas special," he told the Daily Star.

“Writing that with Ruth for two weeks was just brilliant, so I’d love to do another one. Watch this space.”

Oh, don't worry James, we'll be watching.

She was always one of our faves on The Hills so we were delighted to find out Audrina Patridge is pregnant with her first child.

Audrina revealed she is expecting her baby with fiancé Corey Bohan in December, and the happy couple just announced the gender of their baby…a girl!

The Hills alum took to her blog to reveal the news today, and looking at the pictures, they couldn't be happier.

"You guys have no idea how hard this has been to keep my mouth shut, but we are finally ready to reveal the gender of our little munchkin!" she wrote.

"Don't worry, I'll get right to the point…We are thrilled to announce that we will be welcoming a sweet little GIRL into our family in July!" Eeek!

In the blog post she also said that she's open to taking suggestions for baby names. But whatever they call her, we're sure she's going to be one rockin' baby.

When you were a kid and watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, we bet you wished you could visit it and eat ALL the chocolate, right?

Well, Universal Studios Orlando announced plans today to open a Willy Wonka inspired restaurant and even though it's miles away, we're super excited because, well.. chocolate.

The restaurant will be called The Toothsome Chocolate Factory, and according to the press release, the restaurant will feature "towering smoke stacks, funky gadgetry, and staff wearing unique Steampunk fashion".

And as for the menu? Well, it's no surprise that it'll be flooded with chocolate but also has a few options which include "unique twists on classic steak, seafood and pasta entrees, gourmet burgers, sandwiches, incredible salads, all-day brunch and so much more".

But what really caught our eyes were the milkshakes, because.. LOOK:

The restaurant is set to open "later this year," and we feel like just booking a ticket to Orlando to go to the restaurant. Which we won't – but you know, dreamz

Do you ever find yourself watching your favourite TV show and wonder where they find all of their fab outfits? So do we.

And now there's a new app that can help you do just that. Ever is changing the way you shop, and soon your wardrobe could aspire to be Hanna's from Pretty Little Liars.

It works by linking the app with your TV to get a screenshot of the outfit that's on the screen. Then whenever you see something you like, click the app and you'll receive a few options to purchase the clothes the characters are wearing.

And if you're watching Keeping Up With The Kardashians and like Kourtney's jeans, the app will show you the jeans but loads of other options as well so you don't brake the bank.

Sounds fab, right? But don't get too excited, there's still a few things the app needs to work on.

So far, Ever only works with a limited selection of streaming services and it can't be used with live shows. It's also not hooked up to Netflix yet (which is a bummer because what other streaming services do we use over here?!).

So, while you might not be able to find Olivia Pope's coat just yet – imagine ALL of the possibilities!

Enda Kenny might have been swapping gifts and sprigs of shamrock with Barack Obama yesterday, but another well-known politician was left outside in the cold.

After receiving his "usual invitation" to attend the annual St Patricks Day event at the White House, Gerry Adams was subsequently denied entry at the door.

According to the Irish Times, Adams waited around for 90 minutes while security "examined his passport," but decided to leave when it became clear he wasn't getting in any time soon.

Taking to Twitter this afternoon, Adams posted a picture of the invitation he had received with the caption, "Just saying."

Although he often faces increased security checks when flying due to his connections with the Irish Republican movement, he has previously attended the White House's yearly event without issue.

Sinn Féin's deputy leader Mary Lou McDonald and the North’s deputy first minister Martin McGuinness were reportedly allowed to enter the event without issue.

In a statement today, Adams described his "grave disappointment" at not being permitted to enter the premises.

"I had received my usual invitation to attend the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the White House and was pleased to accept.

"When I arrived the staff at the White House informed me that there was an issue of ‘security’.

"After two decades of travelling back and forth to the USA and countless meetings in the White House with successive US Presidents, this is an unacceptable development."

He also criticised the ongoing scrutiny he – and other Sinn Féin party members – face when travelling to the US.

"Some of our political representatives have been denied access to the USA while others, including myself, have to regularly go through additional searches and scrutiny when we travel to and from the USA."

Ah, Liam. Putting the Irish spirit into all of us.

Na Piarsaigh hurling team are playing against Ruairí Óg Cushendall in Croke Park tomorrow for the All Ireland Club final.

And Ruairí Óg Cushendall has recrutied one very famous man – Liam Neeson.

Apparently Liamo was a bit of a hurler back in the day and even played on the St Patrick's team in Ballymena.

If you want a bit of a junk food binge, then say hello to Twix Spread.

It's safe to say that we try to mix everything together these days; Snickers mixed with cookies, Mars mixed with brownies… But, now Twix has already mixed it all up for us so you can put it on your bread, toast, pancakes, waffles.. you get the picture.

For now it's only available in the UK (crying here) but we're hoping it'll come over to our shores pretty soon.

In fact, the new product, courtesy of parent company Mars Drinks and Treats, isn't the only delicious spread to hit the market over there.

It's created a whole load of spreads based on Milky Way, Mars Bars, Maltesers and Bounty bars – ALL of our favourites.

We just need them here. Now

Life as a journalist means there's generally an inbox full of press releases awaiting your attention, but when one comes in directly from Chelsea Handler, you sit up and take notice.

The US TV and comedy queen launches her own chat show with streaming service Netflix on May 11, and she's being very hands-on about the whole process indeed.

As well as asking fans to suggest possible names for the new show via Twitter, she also knuckled down and wrote her own press release. And when we say wrote, we mean wrote – it's literally a photograph of a piece of paper scrawled on by Chelsea:

Amazing. The release for the show – which will stream every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday on Netflix – reads like a letter from Chelsea to herself.

"This is your new show schedule, so if you're thinking about having a baby – DON'T," she writes, before going on to list some key pieces of life advice.

– "I know it's hard for you, but waking up is a great way to start the day."

– "Never give up on your dream guest list: Michelle Obama, The Pope, Arnold Schwarzenegger's maid."

– "Sign up for Netflix."

– "You wanted a new show, you got it. You wanted to be on Netflix, you are. You wanted to spread your wings, now FIX B*TCH."

As for possible names, here are two of our fave suggestions so far:

Roll on May 11 – this looks set to be huge craic altogether.
