Monthly Archives: March 2015

Every girl knows that half the fun of baking is buying and using gorgeous bakeware and fancy kitchen appliances; the other half is obviously the eating part.

We love baking gadgets and kitsch kitchenware, so when we spotted the new bakeware range hitting Aldi’s shelves on 15th March, we immediately marked the date in our calendars.

This collection is perfect for the bakers at SHEmazing! HQ, blending beautiful retro designs with cool technological twists, like their Measuring Jug Scales (€8.99).

Our favourite part of the collection has to be Aldi’s Classic Food Mixer (€39.99), which looks just one you’d expect to find in Rachel Khoo’s kitchen. It has a similar look to KitchenAid’s well-known model, but for a fraction of the price! This multi-purpose mixer comes with a 4-litre auto-rotating stainless steel bowl and stainless steel dough hooks and beaters. It also has a turbo function and eject button with a built-in safety device.

If you’re a baking beginner and want to add some essentials to your kit, the new Aldi range has some great items you should grab. The Stainless Steel Measuring Cups/Spoon (€2.49) come in a pack of 4, perfect for any non-metric recipes – because who of us hasn’t found ourselves doing incredibly frustrating conversions after finding an amazing cupcake recipe on an American food blog?

If you’re planning on making pastry or using ready-roll icing, Aldi’s Rolling Pins (€6.99) are available in a variety of colours to suit any taste preference. Also, if you’re guilty of burning your fingers on the muffin tray because you can’t wait until it cools to try your tasty creations, Aldi also has silicone bakeware available.

This new baking range is available from Aldi’s 113 stores nationwide from Sunday, 15th March while stocks last.

Kim Kardashian might come across as the most body confident person EVER but she revealed this week that she has her own image hang-ups too.

The reality star is currently in Paris enjoying the end of Fashion Week and supporting her husband Kanye as he plays a series of concerts for the Louis Vuitton Foundation.

With her sister Kendall taking to the catwalks for Chanel and Balmain among others, Kim has an instant foot in the door with all the PFW models – but she revealed she's been finding it a little difficult to stay positive.

Sharing a photo on Instagram of herself, Kendall, Joan Smalls, Lily Donaldson, Cara Delevingne and Gigi Hadid, Kim wrote, "Not insecure at all standing next to these super models":

Although she looks downright fabulous and just as gorgeous as the other ladies in the picture, we can see how body insecurities would rear their ugly head when you're suddenly surrounded by a gang of stick-thin supermodels.

Whatever about Kim's feelings, Kanye is more than delighted by his wife's curves, if the photo she posted on Instagram just minutes beforehand is anything to go by:

Those two can't get enough of each other!

The first ever Tayto Pop-Up Shop opened to great fanfare last week, selling freshly made crisp sandwiches to hungry punters all over Dublin.

While everyone was undeniably excited, we also were left just a bit upset that the Wicklow St shop would close on March 15th, TWO DAYS before St Patrick's Day.

After all, what better way to cure a Paddy's Day hangover than by eating a crisp sandwich? Especially one made with Tayto:

Ah mams. Do they go through some sort of ‘mam training’ in order to all use the exact same phrases?

More importantly, will we someday find ourselves using the phrases we have taken the utter pi** out of all of our lives? It’s a scary thought.

Despite all of their loveable ‘mamisms’ we have to say that they really are the best!

1. “Put a coat on – you’ll perish out there!”
It’s July, mam…and we’re on holidays in Spain.

2. “Whisht, whist will you – the Angelus is on”
The longest minute of our lives as children.

3. “Well, how was mass/pub/trip to the shops? Anyone admire ye?”
She always looks a little disappointed when you say no, bless.

4. “If you eat one more sweet now you’ll get worms and you’ll come running to me then, won’t you?”
Ewwwww

5. “Wait till I get the wooden spoon”
The words that would put the fear of God into you

6. “What are ya doin’ still in the bed? Is there something wrong which ya? Heh?!”
Noooo mam, it’s 9am on the first day of summer holidays go awwwwayyy

7. “Because that’s the why!”
Wait, what? That’s not even an answer.

8. “Is it coddin’ me you are? Get out the door”
Being sick before mass on a Sunday is NOT an option

9. “More in your line now to be revising than havin’ your head stuck into that Facebook”
Tis true for her, to be fair

10. “I’ve no wafers left, you’ll have to have your ice-cream in a bowl”
Only joking, no Irish mammy worth her salt would ever run out of wafers

11. “That’ll be a funeral for us now, I suppose”
Well, yes he was the neighbour’s distant cousin who lived at the opposite end of the country and you met him once, so why not?

12. “Switch over there, we’ll see who Ryan has on”
Noooooo mam, but Graham Norton is on!

13. “Oh, don’t mind her, she has a complex about eatin’ meat”
Mam, it’s called being a vegetarian!

14. “I’ll reddin’ your arse if that immersion is left on!”
Good God RUN!

15. “Maura’s daughter was in the pub actually. Nice girl. Plain.”
Mam can be saucy too ya’know!

Happy Mother’s Day to all our lovely mammies!

Some of you beauty fanatics out there will be familiar with the fabulous Irish blog, Dolly Rouge by Kat and Rachelle. Earlier this year, the ladies made the announcement that they would be going their separate ways.

This week, we caught up with Kat and her fabulous beauty blog, Sophistikat. From her earliest beauty memory to a peek inside her make-up bag, Kat lets us in on all of her beauty secrets – check it out!

1. What's your best budget beauty buy?
Oh don't ask me to pick just one! We're so lucky to have access to amazing affordable brands here, even ones that aren't widely available in the UK like Wet N Wild, NYX, Essence and Catrice. For a little island we're spoilt for choice. My absolute favourite would have to be Essence I Love Stage Eyeshadow Primer. Until this came along the only decent eyeshadow bases were from high end brands like Urban Decay and NARS. I've wear tested the Essence primer on one eye, and Urban Decay Primer Potion on the other, and honestly the Essence version was just as good for longevity and preventing creasing. Now I can spend €3 instead of over €20!

2. What's your top make-up tip?
Brows are so important. I only realised this myself in the past couple of years, after getting mine professionally shaped instead of haphazardly plucking them at home. Brows frame your face, and can change your appearance from undefined to polished in an instant. At the same time though, there's a difference between groomed and obviously fake. Don't go overboard filling them in, otherwise you might look back on your photos in ten years time and all you'll be able to see is BROWS. Get a professional to shape them for you, then keep them tidy and add a bit of colour with a brow gel like Benefit Gimme Brow. It only takes two seconds in the morning, and transforms your face.

3. Do you have a favourite all-round beauty product?
Not a product per-se, but an ingredient – glycolic acid. I'm fanatical about chemical exfoliants. They gently break down dead skin cells to reveal fresh radiant skin beneath, without irritating or scratching your skin like scrubs do. Which is really important for people with acne prone or sensitive skin. Glycolic acid has been clinically proven to penetrate the skin to not only exfoliate, but also stimulate collagen and elastin production helping to smooth out lines and wrinkles. It also has water attracting properties and so is great for dehydrated skin. I love to use glycolic acid pads on my face after cleansing, then use the leftover residue on my legs to prevent ingrown hairs, and on my arms to prevent keratosis pilaris. A wonder ingredient!

4. What's your earliest beauty memory?
I had a Lil' Miss Makeup doll that I was obsessed with as a kid. I'm probably showing my age now! She came with makeup sponges, and when you dipped them in cold water and applied them to her face, her makeup magically appeared. Then when you wiped her face with a cloth dipped in warm water, the makeup disappeared again. I always take my makeup off at night, even when I'm wrecked or home from a night out. Must be where I learned the habit!

5. Most girls have a signature scent – what's yours?
Chanel Coco Mademoiselle. It's the scent I wore through my twenties, but now at 30 I think I've outgrown it. I've been sniffing around for a new perfume for my upcoming wedding, and I think I'm going to graduate to Chanel No. 5 for the big day. Cliche, but a total classic.

6. What's in your make-up bag right now?
What's not in my makeup bag more like! I'm really lucky to have a beauty vanity at home, but a few days a week I end up applying my makeup in the gym in morning. This is my bag of daily essentials.

  • NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation
  • Clarins Instant Concealer
  • Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette – I've hit pan and I'll definitely be replacing this. It just brings life to your face and gives it the most gorgeous lit from within glow
  • Bourjois Healthy Balance powder for touch ups throughout the day
  • One of the new Max Factor Creme Puff Baked Blushes
  • Physician's Formula Shimmer Strips Custom Eye Enhancing Eyeliner (amazing, lasts all day)
  • Benefit Roller Lash (it really does curl straight lashes!)
  • Benefit Gimme Brow
  • A Maybelline Color Drama Intense Velvet Lip Pencil in case I have a red lip emergency
  • My beloved double ended Laura Mercier travel makeup brushes (amazing quality and small enough to fit in your handbag).

Thanks for answering all of our questions, Kat!

Billie Faiers may have just returned to work on the new series of TOWIE, as well as looking after her baby daughter, but she's also got her wedding plans in full swing too.

The reality star announced last February that her boyfriend Greg Shepard had proposed, but she's kept quiet about the wedding details since then.

As she was pregnant with their eight-month-old daughter Nelly at the time, the pair understandably decided to put their wedding plans on hold – but now Billie's finally revealed the date!

"We're planning to get married next September," Billie revealed to OK! magazine this week.

As for a venue, the 24-year-old admits she's finding that decision a little more difficult. When asked if she wanted to have her nuptials abroad or in their hometown of Essex, Billie said, "We're not sure, we really haven't decided. We actually can't decide what to do."

Well, if the wedding is anything like Greg's proposal in the Maldives last year, it will be very romantic altogether! Speaking back in February 2014, Billie said her man began to cry as he popped the question.

"He said ‘I love you, I want to spend the rest of my life with you and I know our baby will be just as beautiful as you are. Will you marry me?’ Then he started crying. It took a while for it all to sink it and then ten minutes later I got a bit tearful too."

So sweet!

Bruce Jenner's decision to transition to life as a woman has been all but confirmed from other sources, but he has yet to speak out about it himself – and now it's unclear when we will hear from him.

The reality star's mother Esther and step-daughter Kim have both spoken about in support of Bruce's choices, and up until now it was believed that Bruce himself would discuss his plans in a new TV show of his own.

However it's now been revealed that Bruce has decided to put the reality docuseries on hold, as he felt under too much pressure to change his plans to fit a tight filming schedule.

A source tells TMZ that Bruce "told producers two weeks ago he felt like they were rushing him and compromising his family by gunning for a May air date."

The former Olympian understandably wants to make sure his children – particularly his three sons Brody, Brandon and Burt – are all comfortable with his decision before pressing ahead with the new show.

He reportedly felt like the show's producers were driving what happened more than he was and felt it wasn't a good move for him or his family at the moment.

Having recently being involved in a car crash in which a woman was tragically killed, Bruce also felt he needed time and space to let things settle.

There's a "99.9% chance the docuseries will happen," says a source close to the show, but Bruce is still entitled to back out if he wishes.

Despite the delay and possible cancellation of Bruce's reality show, his pre-recorded tell-all interview with Diane Sawyer will still air as planned, though no details have been announced yet.

It's been almost two weeks since Kelly Osbourne's shock departure from E!'s Fashion Police was confirmed, and she has finally broken her silence.

Kelly has remained relatively quiet on social media since her initial rant threatening to quit back on February 24th, after an episode of Fashion Police was aired which showed Giuliana Rancic mocking singer Zendaya's choice to wear dreadlocks on the Oscars red carpet.

Kelly was initially accused of making fun of Zendaya too, but she vehemently denied this was the case:

The former reality star finally broke her silence on her dramatic exit from the show yesterday during an appearance on The Talk with her mum Sharon.

Like a true professional, Kelly was careful not to burn her bridges, and spoke highly of her time on the show. "You know what, it was the five best working years of my life,” Kelly said when asked how she feels since quitting the show. “I am so grateful for the experience… working with Joan Rivers for five years was incredible. I learned so much… and I’m excited for my future now. I want to try new things.”

30-year-old Kelly has spoken numerous times about how hard she took the news of Joan RIvers' death back in September. Speaking on her Facebook page shortly after the comedienne died during a routine surgery, Kelly said, "Not only was she my boss, she was and will always be my teacher, therapist, closest friend, inspiration and the grandmother I ever knew… She was family and I will never forget her."

Food poisoning can be one of the most debilitating and sometimes deadly things to happen to a human.

The Interagency Food Safety and Collaboration in America have released a new report that sheds more light on what foods caused which poisonings most between the years of 2008 and 2012.

E. Coli
The food product found to be behind 46% of E. Coli cases was beef.

Salmonella
Surprisingly, it wasn’t chicken or eggs that were found to behind the highest rates of Salmonella (18%) but actually seeded vegetables. Eggs and fruit came in at the same level at 12% with chicken a cause of 10% of Salmonella cases.

Listeria
Tainted fruit was found to be behind half of listeria cases.

Campylobacter
Dairy amassed a huge 66% of the cause behind Campylobacter food poisoning. Today, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland stated that raw milk increases the development of foodborne illnesses. The sale of raw milk for direct human consumption in Ireland is recommended to be prohibited by the FSAI.

How can you protect yourself from food poisoning?

The HSE recommend using the 4 C’s to prevent food poisoning:

1. Cleaning
By keeping your hands, utensils and surfaces clean and always washing your hands and surfaces that have come in contact with raw meat, poultry or fish, you can avoid contamination.

2. Cooking
Always ensure your food is cooked through properly for the required time in order to avoid listeria and salmonella.

3. Chilling
Always keep food that needs refrigeration in the fridge to avoid harmful bacteria from growing and multiplying. With leftovers, always refrigerate them once cooled.

4. Cross-contamination
It is important to avoid the cross-contamination of raw foods onto other foods. Always keep raw food separate from others and ensure the utensils used are different and cleaned thoroughly afterwards.

R&B singer Angie Stone was taken into custody yesterday after being arrested for domestic aggravated assault on her own daughter.

The three-time Grammy nominee reportedly got into an argument with her 30-year-old daughter Diamond, which then escalated into an all out-brawl.

Diamond's injuries included a number of broken front teeth, which are thought to be due to Angie hitting her with a metal stand.

According to Diamond's police report, the fight started when Angie got angry at her for not cleaning up after her children properly. The report says that "Ms. Diamond Stone then went on to state that Ms. Angie Stone started [getting] in her face, telling her she needed to leave because she is tired [of] her."

Diamond was also taken into cusotdy but was later released without charge. Although Angie claimed her daughter started the argument by punching her in the face, and that she only injured Diamond accidentally in self-defence, she was still arrested and charged.

Speaking about the fight, Angie told police she hit her daughter by mistake "and once she realised this she quickly put the stand down and attempted to get away from" Diamond.

53-year-old Angie, who has gone by the name Angie B for much of her career, is best known for her tracks Brotha, No More Rain and Wish I Didn’t Miss You.

The actress’ co-star Alan Cumming shared a video of Sienna on his Instagram account, calling her ‘Rocky Balboa’ and a ‘trouper’ – we certainly agree, that looks nasty!

Thankfully, Sienna seems in good-spirits as she sings along and laughs with Alan in the video.
