Yearly Archives: 2014

It's been two years since the tragic death of Savita Halappanavar who passed away in University Hospital Galway after being refused a termination due to Ireland's abortion laws. Savita's death led to both national and international outrage and it remains in the public's consciousness, as we saw today, when a trip to Belfast was held to mark the two year anniversary of her death.

30 women and pro-choice TD's travelled up North on the 'abortion pill train' in a bid to highlight the fact that a 'safe, non-surgical abortion pill' exists and that the women who have been forced to source abortion pills on the black market are being put in unnecessary danger. Rita Harold of ROSA (Reproductive rights against Oppression, Sexism and Austerity) is determined that Irish women should no longer be put in danger or make the emotional and costly journey to the UK to terminate her pregnancy when "a safe and less costly option could be provided through medical abortion pills prescribed by GP's."

In what some may see as a controversial move, TD Ruth Coppinger was among some of the women who took the abortion pill and maintained that they are safer than driving or taking viagra. The trip has faced criticism from Pro-Life campaigners with Caroline Simons saying: "The groups involved have no regard for the humanity of the unborn child and no interest in drawing attention to the fact that abortion has significant negative mental health consequences for many women."

A candlelight vigil and silence is due to be held in memory of Savita.

We're not quite at Christmas yet, so skip the Prosecco and mulled wine this weekend and go for some ghoulish cocktails in honour of Halloween!

Here are a few of our favourite recipes to kick your weekend off – but remember, everything in moderation!

All recipes make one drink.

1. Dark and Stormy
This classic dark rum recipe is an autumn staple. The lightly spiced flavour is a great alternative to other sickly sweet cocktails!

Ingredients

  • One large lime wedge (plus a slice for garnish)
  • 300 ml ginger beer (not ginger ale)
  • 1.5 shot dark rum eg. Captain Morgan's

Method

  1. Add 3 ice cubes to a glass.
  2. Squeeze your lime wedge over the ice.
  3. Add the ginger beer.
  4. Add the rum and stir.
  5. Garnish with a slice of lime.

2. Red Hot Margarita
This spicy twist on the classic Mexican cocktail is sure to please this Halloween!

Ingredients

  • Pinch of cayenne pepper
  • Tablespoon of sea salt
  • Juice of 1 and a half limes (save the other half too)
  • 1 shot tequila
  • 1 tablespoon sugar syrup or agave nectar

Method

  1. Combine the cayenne and salt on a plate or clean work surface.
  2. Moisten the rim of your glass with the spare half of the lime.
  3. Dip the rim of your glass in the pepper and salt mixture to coat it.
  4. To an ice-filled cocktail shaker, add the lime juice, tequila and sugar syrup.
  5. Shake and strain into a glass. Garnish with a lime wedge.

3. Alien Brains
This shot is similar to a Baby Guinness, but it's far more gory! It tastes better than it looks, we promise!

Ingredients

  • Two thirds shot of peach or strawberry schnapps
  • One third shot of Bailey's
  • 2 drops grenadine
  • Splash of blue curacao (optional)

Method

  1. Fill your shot glass two thirds of the way with schnapps.
  2. Using a pourer, carefully add the Bailey's so that it floats over the schnapps. Pour it over the back of a spoon or hold the nozzle close to the inside of the glass.
  3. Wait a few moments for the Bailey's to settle before adding the grenadine and blue curacao.

College is a place where you meet so many different types of people and have a chance to try new things. You have endless chances of making new friends with all the events, clubs and societies and yet somehow come out four years later with eight…but at least they are good ones!

1. Your First Day Friend
You probably have nothing in common with this person and you made friends simply out of fear of you both being alone on that first day at orientation. But somehow it's stuck!

2. The Smart One
This one is great for motivating you to actually do the readings which you realised over time are recommended for a reason. They also alway seem to know when assignments are due and when the in-class tests are scheduled. This friend is basically your college planner because lets face it, the 2014 planner you bought last January is still blank.

3. The Best Friend For Life
They say that you make your friends for life in college and that is 100% true with this friend, you seemed to just click and get on very well, you can see yourselves being friends for years. They’ll probably make a good speech at your wedding reliving your golden years.

4. The Older One
They may be a mature student, a repeat student or even just someone a few months older that fills a sibling like role. They essentially have more life knowledge than you do and therefore are happy to lend a hand when you need it.

5. The One You Secretly Fancy
Boys being boys (dense) he was not receiving your signals as flirting and you are now firmly in the friend zone. Which is fine except for the fact he expects you to high five him when he pulls on a night out…

6. The One Who Lives On Campus
Great for somewhere to crash on a night out after college events or when you accidently spend your taxi fare home on jager bombs. They are also obligated to host the venue for pre-drinks before nights out.

7. The Agony Aunt
This one should be studying psychology as they always know exactly what to say and do. It doesn’t matter if  you come to them for help with something as big as changing courses or something as small as what to text the guy you met in Coppers, they always have a solution.

8. The Party Animal
Their grant and part time job solely funds their social life and they could drink the entire Geordie Shore cast under table. Which is not advisable. Obviously.

With the week that’s in it, it’s no surprise that our top movie picks for the next seven days include not one, not two, but THREE horrors, with two crime thrillers thrown in for good measure. Scare the pants off yourself and lose hours of sleep, sure it’d be rude not to. Which of these five are you brave enough to check out?

Extraterrestrial

October 29th

Cabins, woods, aliens; need we say any more? Brought to you by director Colin Minihan, this movie tells the story of a group of friends who have to defend themselves against an alien onslaught.  What is meant to be a romantic weekend away turns into a frantic fight for survival.  Starring Freddie Stroma, who you may recognise from the Harry Potter films, this film is a perfect pick for Halloween week.

No Good Deed

October 31st

We're leading yp to the scariest day of the year, so we’re bound to have an escaped convict or two in the cinema, right? No Good Deed, directed by Emmy-award nominated Sam Miller and starring Idris Elba, tells the story of a mother-of-two who spends a night being terrorised by an escaped prisoner.

Trash

October 31st

Starring Rooney Mara and Martin Sheen and based on a novel by Andy Mulligan, Trash is set in an unnamed city where three children Raphael, Gardo and Rat spend most of their time rooting through piles of rubbish in the hopes of unearthing something of worth.  This endeavour soon finds them on the run from the police and on a quest to right a terrible wrong.

Ouija

October 31st
This supernatural horror-thriller, directed by Stiles White, brings us on a journey through our deepest fears of the unknown.  A group of friends soon find out that some games just aren’t worth it.

Nightcrawler

October 31st
Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, this crime-thriller tells the story of Lou Bloom, a man who stumbles into the world of underground crime journalism, with dangerous and life-threatening consequences. Directed by Dan Gilroy of The Bourne Legacy fame,  this is an edge-of-your-seat type flick.

It would appear that Paul Rudd has found his body double should he ever need it!

The actor was claimed to have tried to break up a homophobic fight that broke out in a Dallas airport – but he says it wasn’t him!

In the shocking footage a man can be seen attacking another man for his pink shirt and calling him offensive homophobic slurs.

He then attacks the man and people jump in to help, including fake Paul Rudd.

The video has some NSFW language so stick your earphones in…

Everyone started to speculate about the actor’s appearance in the video, hailing him a hero before his publicist ruined everyone’s day, claiming: “It isn’t him. Thanks for checking.”

So who is the mystery man? After some searching the internet found a man called Ben Kravit, who does indeed resemble Paul!

Whether you've had a busy day at work or you're dying for the sweet embrace of your couch after college, some days it's just impossible to motivate yourself to exercise. And plus, you're wrecked – surely staying at home will help boost your energy?

It might seem hard to believe, but exercise is far more likely to wake you up and leave you feeling energised than a night of Netflix and comfort food.

The key is to tailor your exercise depending on why exactly you're feeling tired and worn out.

Here are a few guidelines…

1. If you're… tired from sitting at your desk all day

Try…
Short, intense exercise with intervals. Running, cycling or swimming are all great options here. Go as fast and hard as you can for 30 seconds, and then return to a brisk pace for 1 – 2 minutes before repeating.

Why?
Even a small amount of high-intensity training could boost your energy more than relaxing for the evening. Scientists believe this is because physical exercise alters the levels of energy-pumping chemicals like dopamine and serotonin in our brains. Whatever the technical explanation behind it, you'll feel great afterwards, we promise!

2. If you're… low in energy because you haven't exercised in WAY too long (or ever)

Try…
A brisk walk or cycle for 30 minutes.

Why?
There's no doubt that regular exercise has a very positive effect on our energy levels. If you're constantly tired in the evenings although you're getting enough sleep, your lifestyle could be the culprit. Walking or cycling are easy forms of exercise to begin with – they're cost free and don't involve committing to a six-month gym membership or a series of classes. Just wrap up, get outside and get going – you'll feel all the better for it!

3. If you're… feeling drained after going too hard at the gym all week

Try…
Gentle exercise like a cycle or a chilled yoga class.

Why?
The main reason that excessive training can lead to feelings of tiredness is that you're not giving your body enough time to recover. Even the best athletes allow for rest days and recovery periods between workouts, so don't feel like you're failing by skipping a day. Keep your energy levels up with some easy, fun exercise that won't wear you out any further. You'll be back on track in a day or two!

4. If you're… struggling to keep your eyes open after a sleepless night

Try…
Resting, resting, resting!

Why?
If you're truly tired from lack of sleep, heavy exercise isn't going to help. Get yourself to bed early or take an afternoon nap, and hit the gym later or tomorrow, when you're feeling refreshed and focused again.

Things got a leeetle bit awkward when a news anchor didn’t realise she was on-air and called her co-worker fat!

Ginger Chan hadn’t realised her mic was on as Sam Rubin discussed his weight in the live-room, saying: “My wife says ‘since when did you become the fat guy on that show’” after which a voice can be heard saying: “He’s always been!”

The jibe wasn’t meant to be malicious and thankfully the whole crew took it really well – including the poor co-worker!

Might want to check your mic next time, Ginger…

Retail giant Walmart sparked huge controversy online yesterday with a VERY questionable category on their website's Halloween section.

The company was forced to apologise after advertising a range of "Fat Girl Costumes." Yes, really.

Shoppers took to social media to point out the massive faux-pas and at first received only generic apologies from the company:

Later though, Walmart released a media statement to officially say sorry for the mix-up. "This never should have been on our site," said the company. "It is unacceptable, and we apologise. We are working to remove it as soon as possible and ensure this never happens again."

They also responded directly to angry customers on Twitter:

It's thought the category name might have been a cruel joke by one of Walmart's web developers, as the costumes shown are very similar to those listed in the shop's "Women's Plus Size Adult" section.

Posted along the top of the section was a banner reading "Make it a monstrously big Halloween for less" which gave even further offence to some shoppers.

Well, we can't say we saw this one coming, that's for sure!

We’ve all heard and read about the Strictly Come Dancing curse for couples – and now it looks like Caroline Flack is the latest celeb to experience it!

Well, sort of – Caroline reportedly had a kiss with fellow star, Ola Jordan on a recent night out, with both of their partners present too!

Caroline is currently dating Jack Street while Ola has been married to James Jordan since 2003.

The couples were on a night out in Essex, organised by fellow contestant Mark Wright, when the innocent kiss happened, with a source telling MailOnline: “It was just a bit of fun. Jack found it hilarious.”

Whether we are still students, or just remembering the good days – we all know how awful it is to have a hangover in a lecture. You could have just slept in, so the hardest part is actually over.

That doesn't make the rest of the lecture any easier though…

Here's the cycle of sitting in a lecture, hungover:

1. I’m Way Too Drunk For This

No no, it's been like six hours, you're definitely grrrand you think as you take the short walk into college.

2. Don’t Sit Close To Anyone

You can’t help but despise everyone surrounding you. Why are they so loud? And in the way? All you want is to find a nice corner where you can reside, undisturbed. This may be the fear.

3. The Smell Of Drink Off Me

You slowly start to realise that you smell like nail varnish remover. You turn your own stomach and begin getting paranoid about those around you.

4. It’s So Hot In Here

File:Dan ripping shirt off.gif

Too many people make it really, really warm… gonna puke.

5. Ok, Ok, Focus

Time might just fly by if you pay attention. This lecture might distract you from the constant waves of nausea.

6. Don’t Make Eye Contact With The Lecturer

Head down, take notes. They'll never know (they ALWAYS know).

7. Ok, Just Write The Date On The Page

Concentration, concentration…

8. That Projector Is WAAAAAAY Too Bright

The world hates you. You hate you. Why did you come here?

9. Uggggggh Why Am I Here?

Naptime.

10. So. Hungry.

Hot chicken roll is only minutes away – hang on.

11. FLASHBACK

There was Rock The Boat and then..NO NO NO!

12. “That concludes today’s lecture…”

Run. Run as fast as you can.

Vicky also said that her decision to leave has a lot to do with her boyfriend, James Morgan: “I love him a lot and if I’m going to give our relationship a fair go, I have to not be running off and doing Geordie Shore every two months.”
