We are not now nor have we ever been a large country – but we are certainly getting bigger.

In fact, when it comes to population growth, Ireland is booming. Last year, there were 4,605,500 of us knocking around; this year, that's swelled to 4,625,900.

According to Eurostat, we continue to have the highest birthrate in Europe, and the second lowest rate of deaths (behind only Cyprus): 66,500 babies were born here with only 29,300 deaths occurring.

Gordon D'Arcy and Aoife Cogan welcomed a daughter in May

In contrast, 700,000 babies were born in Germany, but 875,000 Germans died.

However, with 16 percent of the total EU population (81.2million people), Germany continues to be the most populated EU country, ahead of France (66.4million residents) and the United Kingdom (64.8million residents).

On 1 January 2015, the population of the European Union was 508.2million, compared with 506.9 million the year before.

In March, Ibec chief executive Danny McCoy said the island of Ireland can expect to hit a population of 10million before 2050.

Dublin Zoo is evidently encouraging the nation to collectively utter an audible "ooh" and "aah": because it has now released images of its three unbelievably adorable red ruffed lemur newborns.

The Zoo is already home to four of the cute-as-a-button primates, but these loveable fur babies are pretty much the icing on the cake when it comes to can't-stop-staring cuteness.

The team at Dublin Zoo is undoubtedly delighted with the new arrivals as the species is currently under threat.

The organisation's Ciaran McMahon explained: “Red ruffed lemurs are one of the most endangered of all lemurs.

"The birth of three babies at Dublin Zoo is hugely significant and definitely something to celebrate.

"We are delighted to report that our new arrivals are strong and healthy and are nosily exploring their habitat on red ruffed lemur island."

So, helping increase the population of endangered species while also indulging in hours of cuteness is a sure way to get bring on that Friday feeling a little earlier.

To see the new-born red ruffed lemur babies venture out into their new habitat for the very first time, tune in to The Zoo this evening at 7pm on RTÉ One.

It sounds like Millie Mackintosh may have some rather exciting news to share quite soon…

The designer and reality TV has revealed that she and husband, Professor Green, already have baby names picked out, saying: “We’ve got names in mind. I won’t say them but they are old family names. Traditional but unusual. There won’t be any fruit and veg names, though.”

Professor Green had spoken previously about their desire to have children, but until now Millie, whose real name is Camilla, has kept quiet on the subject.

Millie continued on to say that she would like “one or two of each [boys and girls] and that she has a very nurturing side: “I always like looking after people, caring for people, and cooking for people. I enjoy the nurturing kind of stuff. I love being around all my friend’s babies and like to dress them in little outfits.”

Hmm, it sounds like Millie and Professor Green are very serious starting a family and we wouldn’t be surprised to hear the pitter patter of tiny feet verrry soon indeed!

It looks like a baby could be on the way soon for Lena Dunham –  if her boyfriend has anything to do with it!

According to Jack Antonoff, the two are older now and things are getting very serious indeed: “It just seems like the most fun thing in the world. I’ve never met people who have kids who haven’t looked me in the eye and been like ‘It’s the greatest thing that’s ever happened.”‘

The Fun guitarist also appears to have a grown-up approach to life, saying: “I think it’s biological. I’m 30. I’m not that young, right? I’m not like, 24, or 22. I’m no longer in the phase of my life when I talk about everything in the future. I’m in the future.”

Aww, how sweet would these two be with a little baby?

We wonder if they would write a pregnancy into Girls?! Somehow we can’t imagine Hannah with a baby!

There must have been something in the water in that jungle, as Kian Egan has revealed he’s on a baby-making mission with wife Jodi Albert.

It seems the I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! winner and his wife are feeling very broody and want to add another three more babies to their family.

In an interview in Ok! Magazine, the couple have opened up about their plans to extend their family, giving two-year-old toddler Koa some siblings to play with.

The former Westlife star kept no secret of wanting another baby after he was crowned King of the Jungle last December, telling Hello magazine, “Being away from my family made me look at our lives. I’d love to have a mini Jodi. I’m so lucky to have her and Koa and if we can give him a brother or sister why wait.”

And now the 33-year-old has shared his dream of having a house full of kids.

“I’d go all the way to four if I could. Two boys and two girls would be nice,” he said. “At the end of this year, I’d like to have popped a bun in the oven.”

You better get cracking then Kian.
