Yearly Archives: 2018

Love it or hate it (although why you'd hate it is beyond us), there's no denying the phenomenon that is Stranger Things.

Currently in its second season, the Netflix original has amassed a loyal (and slightly obsessed) fanbase since it burst onto our screens back in 2016.

In fact, some people are so obsessed they'd go as far as to enlist the help of Twitter in order to share their high school photos with their favourite cast member.

Take Californian student, Damaris, for example.

She reached out to David Harbour, who plays Police Chief Jim Hopper in the show, and asked him how many retweets she would need to have him pose alongside her in the school snaps.

When David replied 25,000 under the condition he could wear the school sweatshirt and carry a trombone, Damaris got to work rallying the good folk on Twitter.

And it worked.

"Voted most likely to hijack someone’s high school senior photos 24 years later," David wrote in a post which has amassed 386,000 likes in less than a day.

"Many thanks to @postydamaris and her kind family and @iamtommygphotography for making a dream come true and proving my high school classmates right!"

When it comes to school snaps, go big or go home…

2008 was a defining year in the career of British-American actress, Rebecca Hall.

She was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and while she didn't take home the award, the nod opened many doors for her within the film industry.

As a result, Rebecca, who has subsequently starred in The Town, Frost / Nixon and The BFG,  has always felt indebted to Mr Allen, which is one of the reasons she agreed to play a role in his latest movie, A Rainy Day in New York.

However, the accusations of sexual abuse which have been levelled at the director by his adoptive daughter, Dylan Farrow, in recent decades have caused Rebecca to re-think both her working relationship with Allen, and her participation in the movie.

In a heartfelt message posted to Instagram, the pregnant actress admitted she regretted her decision to work with Allen, and after considerable soul searching acknowledged that her choice to do so indirectly silenced women who have been the victims of sexual violence.

"The day after the Weinstein accusation broke in full force I was shooting a day of work on Woody Allen’s latest movie in New York. I couldn’t have imagined somewhere stranger to be that day, "she began.

"When asked to do so, some seven months ago, I quickly said yes. He gave me one of my first significant roles in film for which I have always been grateful, it was one day in my hometown – easy. I have, however subsequently realized there is nothing easy about any of this. In the weeks following I have thought very deeply about this decision, and remain conflicted and saddened."

After reading and re-reading Dylan Farrow’s statements of a few days ago and going back and reading the older ones – I see, not only how complicated this matter is, but that my actions have made another woman feel silenced and dismissed. That is not something that sits easily with me in the current or indeed any moment, and I am profoundly sorry. I regret this decision and wouldn’t make the same one today. It’s a small gesture and not one intended as close to compensation but I’ve donated my wage to @timesup. I’ve also signed up, will continue to donate, and look forward to working with and being part of this positive movement towards change not just in Hollywood but hopefully everywhere. #timesup

Rebecca explains that her attempts to reconcile her career trajectory with the suffering of other women was hugely painful, and she hopes that by donating her wage from A Rainy Day in New York to the #TimesUp campaign, she can go someway towards rectifying the matter.

Rebecca's followers, some of whom have been victims of sexual abuse. have praised her candour and acknowledged the impact her gesture will have on the movement as a whole.

Way back when, Gavin Becker asked Olivia Toft to their high school prom by writing 'Olivia, you rock'… on a rock.

Goofy? Yes. Would we have accepted? Also, yes

So, when Gavin decided to ask Olivia to marry him in recent days, he decided to go for a relatively a similar approach.

Gavin, an aviation student, took his girlfriend on a plane ride, and as they coasted over the banks of a frozen lake in Northern Minnesota, Gavin pointed Olivia in the direction of a question written in the snow.

The question was 25 feet tall, took more than 4 and a half hours to create and elicited the response Gavin hoped for.

Olivia said yes. And we're swooning.

After landing the plane, the University of North Dakota student took his new fianceé into the middle of the enormous heart and made it official by getting down on one knee.

BRB, crying.

One of the reasons Ellen De Generes is one of America's most popular chatshow hosts is because she takes a no-holds-barred approach to her presenting style.

Viewers have both laughed and cried with the host who seeks to share as much of her life as possible with the people who watch her show, and this week was no different.

Having seen her community of Montecito devastated by a mudslide, Ellen had told viewers she was struggling with the aftermath, before later revealing she had been dealt a second blow this week.

With great poise, Ellen told viewers that her father, Elliott DeGeneres, had passed away in recent days.

Paying tribute to the man she believes gave her her sense of humour, Ellen gave the studio audience and viewers at home an insight into the life she shared with him before recalling the only family vacation she took as a child.

We'll let Ellen take it from here.

Speaking to Oprah Winfrey for a show which is due to air in the States tomorrow, Reese Witherspoon has revealed that being sexually assaulted at 16 rendered her incapable of living a normal life.

The actress says that attempting to process the crime which was committed against her was all too overwhelming for a child, telling Oprah: "I have my own experiences that have come back to me very vividly, and I found it really hard to sleep, hard to think, hard to communicate."

"A lot of the feelings I’ve been having anxiety about, about being honest, the guilt for not speaking up earlier or taking action, true disgust at the director who assaulted me when I was 16 years old and anger that I felt at the agents and the producers who made me feel that silence was a condition of my employment."

Tragically, 41-year-old Reese reveals that the assault at 16 was just one incident in her attempt to carve out a career in Hollywood, adding: "I wish I could tell you that that was an isolated incident in my career, but sadly, it wasn’t."

The acclaimed actress who has been a key player in Hollywood's #TimesUp campaign admits that breaking her silence, while far from easy, was a necessary hardship.

"As you can see I'm very emotional about it but I keep going back," she told Oprah.

Reflecting on a proverb which has helped guide her in the months following the Weinstein scandal, the mother-of-three said she knew it was time to come forward with her lived experiences if anything was going to change within the industry.

"Somebody sent me this Elie Wiesel quote that said, 'Silence helps the tormentors. It doesn't help the tormented, and neutrality helps the oppressors not the oppressed.'"

"And there's moments that you have to evaluate whether silence is going to be your only option and in certain times that was our only option, but now is not that time."

Natalie Portman, America Ferrera, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Shonda Rhimes joined Reese on the CBS show.

Following a rousing speech at Sunday night's Golden Globes Awards which sought to highlight the importance of giving a voice to the marginalised, Oprah Winfrey has found herself at the centre of much discussion this week.

"I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon!" Oprah told viewers.

"And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say "Me too" again."

While many felt Oprah's speech reflected her devotion to social movements like #MeToo and #TimesUp as well as a desire to run for president in the 2020 campaign, others weren't quite as impressed.

Heidi Klum's ex-husband, Seal, took to Instagram this week to vocalise his disdain for Oprah, suggesting that her speech was nothing more than a bombastic attempt to conceal the fact she was always aware of Harvey Weinstein's predations.

Seal uploaded two images of the star in the company of Weinstein with a caption which read: "When you have been part of the problem for decades, but suddenly they all think you are the solution."

"Oh I forgot, that's right…..you'd heard the rumours but you had no idea he was actually serially assaulting young stary-eyed actresses who in turn had no idea what they were getting into," Seal added. "My bad. #SanctimoniousHollywood."

Seal's post was, unsurprisingly, met with a mixed response, with some followers agreeing with the singer and others questioning Seal's own past.

"So tired of celebrities spinning things to make them look good! If she knew years ago she should have stepped up and been a true icon," agreed one Instagram user.

"Everybody in Hollywood posed in pics with this monster. Like we haven’t heard things about you. Ugh. The nerve," wrote one follower – a sentiment which was echoed by model Chrissy Teigen.

"Hmm. Let’s just say we’ve all heard things about each other, haven’t we?” Chrissy wrote.

Last night, Seal returned to Instagram to defend his decision to post the message about Oprah and went on to clarify his stance on the situation.

"It's no secret in any way, and we do not try to hide that we're working this way," so said Bo Kjellson, chief executive of Boras Djurpark, when discussing the park's decision to put down nine healthy lion cubs over the last five years.

Kjellson explained that the decision was based on two factors – the cubs' integration among the pride and the fact the park struggled to re-home the young animals.

Speaking to SVT, he explained: "At that time we had tried to sell or relocate them to other zoos for a long time but unfortunately there were no zoos that could receive them."

"When the aggressions became too big in the group we had to remove some animals. And then it had to be them."

Looking to the future, Kjellson admitted that the fate of the other lions was yet to be determined.

"Currently, the group works well, but some of them may become surplus animals, and then we will try to place them elsewhere," he said before adding: "It could be so that we have to put them to death."

Boras Djurpark, is located approximately 25 miles from Gothenberg.

Residents of a town in Co Meath plan to protest at the site of a former primary school which the Church of Scientology purchased last year.

According to emerging reports, former Scientology members will be joining residents of Ballivor in order to contest proposed plans for the site.

Local Fine Gael Cllr, Noel French, previously communicated his concerns regarding the purchase, saying: "I understand that what the Scientologists want to use the building for is a substance rehabilitation centre."

Indeed, The Irish Independent reports that the controversial organisation intends to create a Narconon drug rehab centre, with refurbishment having already begun on the building.

Former members of the church have sought to communicate the apparent dangers associated with the practices carried out within such centres.

Former member, Peter Griffiths, said: "The Narconon programme consists of running, very long sauna sessions and doses of vitamins and minerals many times beyond the safe limits, with serious potential side-effects including organ damage and death."

The protest is scheduled to go ahead on Wednesday January 17.

Last year, a similar protest was held in Firhouse in Dublin after a building was purchased by the organisation for €6 million.

If you gave Twitter even a passing glance in the hours that followed the first episode of Derry Girls last Thursday night, you'll know it went down an absolute storm.

And if you took a look today, you'd know that the nation is now officially obsessed with Channel 4's latest offering.

In fact, viewers are already calling for longer episodes of the comedy series which follows 16-year-old Erin and her band of mates as they navigate secondary school life under the watchful eye of the nuns, and to the backdrop of The Troubles.

Thankfully, confirmation has arrived that the series has already been commissioned to return for a second season, but we'll be honest, we want more than just that.

We want 60-minute episodes, we want a movie, we want to be best friends with Michelle…

Last Friday, we told you to get yourselves to one of three locations around Dublin city centre if you wanted a chance to win free flights with Aer Lingus.

If you missed out on the excitement which ensued, you're probably wondering what all this is about, so let's recap!

In an effort to rid the nation of the January Blues, the airline set up Sun Dials at Grand Canal Dock, O’Connell Street and South King Street.

The moment these Sun Dials started ringing, it was up to you to pick one up and answer the three questions posed by the Aer Lingus staff member on the other end.

If you answered all three correctly, you and a friend would be jetting off for a much-needed trip abroad.

It really was as simple as that, but if you don't believe us, just take a look at this!
