Popular dating app Bumble has just launched a special fund to help female film-makers tackle the "shocking" gender imbalance in the industry.

The Female Film Force offers aspiring female storytellers in the UK and Ireland the chance to win one of five £20,000 grants to make a short film, with the hope that they will shown at film festivals in 2020.

It comes after a controversial award season which saw just six women, including Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, take home an Oscar, compared with 33 men.

Those behind the initiative say the winning films will "embody Bumble's values of female empowerment, equality and kindness."

Each entry must include an all-female team of writers, directors and producers, and will be judged by a panel of industry professional, chaired by radio personality Edith Bowman.

As well as finanical backing, successful applicants will also relieve guidance from experts as part of a mentoring programme created in partnership with Women in Film and TV.

Whitney Wolfe, the founder and chief executive of Bumble, said: “The imbalance we saw over this year’s awards season at the Oscars, Golden Globes and the Baftas was truly shocking.

“Women are incredible storytellers, and creators, and we want to see more of their stories told.

“We know how many talented women there are out there – and we want to see them represented accurately. There is no reason why one of these films shouldn’t be nominated or win an award – and that’s the vision for this project; real opportunity, real stories, real change.”

The five winning entries will be announced in July, with the aim to have the films finished and ready to showcase at an industry event in January 2019.

We love nothing more that a cheeky success story… especially when those behind it happen to be Irish.

COYBIG, and all that jazz.

Anyway, with that sentiment, we'd like to introduce you to ourApp of the week, created by two lads from Dublin.

So basically, you can get amazing tours of iconic locations through your phone. Handy or what?

At Ekho, the goal is to help "transform cultural and museum interactions through mobile technology."

Founders, Raef Tyrell and Mark McGeogh are committed to empowering a new generation of art and culture lovers (hey, that's us!) and attraction visitors, allowing them to delve deeper into the wonderful stories behind the attractions that they love!

Over the past few years, cultural institutions and tourist attractions have sought innovative ways to improve visitor engagement, and the lads decided to act on that industry need.

While many try to draw visitors in with compelling exhibitions, they also seek to add other elements that will facilitate visitor engagement and learning through a unique experience.

And so Ekho was born!

But how does it work? Well, it couldn't be more simple, trust us, we're far from tech savvy.

Visitors just have to download Ekho onto their own device either from the AppStore or Android's Playstore.

And then you can seamlessly engage with the exhibits via Ekho's Bluetooth technology.

And the best part? Ekho is officially launching today – so get your ass to the app store!

You'll be glad you did.

The risk of coeliac disease increases from one in every 100 people to one in 10, when a first-degree relative has the disease. That’s according to the Coeliac Society of Ireland, which today launched its annual Awareness Week. Coeliac Awareness Week 2018, which is supported by Ireland’s leading grocery retailer SuperValu, takes place nationwide 14th to 20th May.

This year, the Coeliac Society of Ireland are highlighting the impact of coeliac disease on families, and in particular, children. A number of events will be taking place during Awareness Week, including a series of in-store events at SuperValu stores around Ireland, featuring dietetic talks, advice from the Coeliac Society of Ireland and gluten free food samplings.

Commenting at the launch today, Mary Twohig, Chairperson of the Coeliac Society of Ireland, said: “Each year, Coeliac Awareness Weeks provides us with an important opportunity to highlight the seriousness of the disease. It’s not a fad or a lifestyle choice, it is a serious, lifelong condition. If undiagnosed, people with coeliac disease could develop osteoporosis, anaemia, nerve damage and it can have negative impacts on fertility.

“If people are suffering with symptoms we want them to be aware that if a first-degree relative has coeliac disease, their own chances of having the disease are increased to one in ten. It’s also important to note that some people with the disease experience no symptoms but internal damage is still taking place. We advise anyone with a first blood relative diagnosed as coeliac to discuss testing with their GP.”

Officially launching Coeliac Awareness Week 2018 was Minister of State for Health Promotion and the National Drugs Strategy, Catherine Byrne TD, who said: “I am delighted to officially launch Coeliac Awareness Week 2018. With approximately 47,500 people in Ireland affected by coeliac disease, it’s hugely important that the medical risks of the disease are highlighted.

The Coeliac Society of Ireland’s annual Awareness Week is an important event in the calendar for not only those with the disease, but the general public as a whole – we can all do our bit to make sure we’re familiar with the seriousness of the disease, and find out how we can help those with it live life to the full.”

Also at the launch of Coeliac Awareness Week was Paddy Curran, SuperValu’s Health & Wellness Manager, who said, “At SuperValu, we are committed to ensuring we provide a range of products that provide quality, choice and value to meet our aoeliac shoppers needs. Our focus is to provide the same food experience for our Coeliac customers as we do for all our shoppers.

We’re excited about our new ranges available in store. We are delighted to be sponsoring Coeliac Awareness Week again this year, providing our support in helping raise awareness of coeliac disease and being able to demonstrate that there are hundreds of gluten free products available to the coeliac community in our stores – peoples’ lifestyle and eating habits do not need to be restricted.”

Commenting further at the launch, Ms. Twohig said “A diagnosis of coeliac disease can be a difficult adjustment but with some planning and family support it’s possible to live a full and healthy life. We would encourage friends and family of a person diagnosed as coeliac to learn a little about the disease so that those diagnosed don’t feel left out of family occasions. The Coeliac Society website have top tips for hosting/cooking for a coeliac person both in and out of home.

“Some of our top tips for hosting a coeliac guest at your home include:

  • Discuss what you plan to cook with your coeliac guest (or their parent, if it’s a child) in advance. Often a meal can be made gluten free with some minor tweaks.
  • Cook gluten free food separately, if using a deep fat fryer ensure the oil is changed if it was previously used to cook a gluten containing food. If using a toaster, try toaster bags to ensure gluten free bread is not contaminated.
  • Sharing is not always caring where a coeliac guest is concerned. For example, using the same butter knife for standard and gluten-free bread could make your guest ill. Allow your guest to serve themselves first at a buffet meal to avoid cross contamination. Providing a separate dish for butter or dips is also a good idea.”

Coeliac disease is an auto-immune disease that prevents those affected from digesting gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye.  The disease can manifest itself at any stage in a person’s lifetime, with symptoms including abdominal pain, recurring mouth-ulcers, weight-loss, vomiting and diarrhoea.  It is estimated to affect 47,500 people in Ireland.

The Together For Yes initiative has warned voters on both sides of the debate to be wary of tactics used by particular organisations on social media.

Described as 'Trump' style tactics, the campaign wishes to draw voters attention to the facts surrounding the referendum.

'It has been reported that a website claiming to be promoting unbiased information was in fact a ploy to capture the Facebook information of Irish citizens in order to target them in the weeks before the referendum on the 25th May, similar to the recent Cambridge Analytica scandal,' said Together For Yes Co-Director Ailbhe Smyth.

A post shared by Together for Yes (@together4yes) on

'Other reports suggest a video circulated on Facebook was manipulated to look like an RTE news report. Both of these cases have been reported to Facebook and one to the Standards in Public Office Commission.'

'We are all aware of the huge impact that manipulative online and digital campaigns can have on voter sentiment, as was witnessed in the Brexit vote in 2016.'

'Together for Yes understands that the decision to repeal the 8th amendment is not one that Irish people are taking lightly. It is imperative that people are given the opportunity to hear both sides of the argument in a way that allows them to make a fully informed decision and this includes having access to facts, evidence and personal stories. Both sides in this debate have a responsibility to ensure the integrity of all information that is used to support our respective cases.'

'This responsibility includes social media activity, the credentials of experts and the veracity of facts presented across a range of media over the course of the next few weeks.'

'Together For Yes is urging people to check out the Referendum Commission website for objective, factual and truthful information on what the central question of this referendum is about.'

'It is deeply concerning that private citizens' data appears to be being captured in this way in a bid to manipulate undecided voters in the final few weeks of a critical campaign.'

The sugar tax will come into effect today as Ireland continues to tackle the obesity crisis. The government hopes the tax on drinks that are high in sugar will help lower the number of childhood obesity cases in Ireland.

The sugar tax will affect sports drinks, flavoured waters, carbonated waters, as well as water and juice-based drinks with added sugars.

The public will pay an additional 20 cent per litre for drinks with 5 to 8g of sugar per 100ml.

Drinks containing over 8g of sugar per 100ml will cost the public an additional 30 cent per litre.

The public will now pay more for popular brands including Club Orange and Pepsi.

People could pay as much as an extra 60 cent for a two-litre bottle of popular sugary drinks. The government hope the higher prices will stop people from purchasing the drinks, and choose a healthier option instead.

The sugar tax does not affect fruit juices, despite the fact that some contain excessive amounts of sugar.

It is understood that one-third of youths aged between 15 and 24 consume sugary drinks daily or most days of the week.

Past research found that one fizzy drink a day is enough for children to exceed their recommended daily sugar intake.

The HSE’s Lead for Obesity, Professor Donal O’Shea said, “The sugar tax is going to increase the cost, that will reduce consumption, we know that is what tax does.”

“I am also really hopeful that the money generated will be identified and then used to fund other preventive measures because a single item is not going to change the obesity epidemic on its own, you need to do multiple things in multiple areas,” he added.

Netflix has confirmed the air date for the second season of 13 Reasons Why.  Season two will hit the streaming service launch on Netflix, Friday 18 May 2018.

Season two picks up in the aftermath of Hannah's death and the start of the characters' complicated journeys towards healing and recovery.

Liberty High prepares to go on trial, but someone will stop at nothing to keep the truth surrounding Hannah's death concealed. A series of ominous polaroids lead Clay and his classmates to uncover a sickening secret and a conspiracy to cover it up.

The show has been labelled controversial after many being claimed it glamorizes mental health, however others have praised the show, saying how it has helped them talk about their own struggles.

In response to the criticism, new resources will be added to 13ReasonsWhy.info, a website created by Netfilx to discuss the distressing themes portrayed in the show.

In a series of videos, the cast will talk about issues such as bullying, sexual assault and drug abuse.

"It's a very exciting season for a lot of reasons," Kate Walsh, who stars as Hannah's mom Olivia, recently told E! News.

"You see us sort of following the trail of Bryce Walker, so this season deals with sexual assault, it deals with truth, it deals with responsibility, it deals with the aftermath of Hannah's death…And really trying to, again, look for responsibility and accountability. It's very intense and very, I think, still totally addictive."

We cannot wait for the new season of 13 Reasons Why.
